It'd be easy to be critical of this, but he's talking about trying to play things that he's not accustomed to. He's pretty honest and open about this stuff not being his thing (clean RnB/Jazz chords are obviously not at all what he does in Metallica) so, I can't help but like him and respect him for still wanting to learn things outside of his comfort zone.
I remember when I was in 6th grade sitting down with my trumpet and watching the TV show called Strike Force and teaching myself the theme song for the show. I went into school on Monday and started playing it and the other trumpeters were very impressed but then starting criticizing that I was missing a note here or there. The point is, it's so cool to see that musicians outside of what band or whatever music they are supposed to play love to tinker as well and that is what keeps them enthused.
Finding out about Jimi's strings sent me down a rabbit hole, spent a few years not even learning a new song or anything really related to playing because I was swapping strings just to play a few riffs at least a few times a day.

All guitarists are always learning. Remember, he became famous on stuff HE WROTE. As a guitar player myself, things you come up with on your own is much EASIER to play than other music. Also, alot of these guys never play it the same way twice, there can always be some variation, to keep it fresh!!
I wish I had started listening to Jeff Beck earlier, I only became interested after he passed. Big mistake. I bought a few albums recently, and they freaking scorch. I'm a massive heavy metal fan (for my weight class) and Beck isn't metal in the current sense in 2024, but he's still totally fucking metal.
Finally someone has taken the time to talk about different woods for guitars, variants of sound and tones from different guage strings and even hand strengthening exercises using unusual chords. Absolutely class video.
Kirk and Jeff "r.i.p" are the reason I picked up a guitar. And 20 years later I am still as inspired as the day I picked it up. Its great to see kirk with the same enthusiasm!
Interesting seeing Kirk look so uncomfortable playing a Genesis riff - but I love it! It goes to show that a lifelong pro guitarist can also keep learning . . . and that they have struggles that put them out of their comfort zone too. It’s so funny seeing him strum like that period, but also seeing him try complex fancy fingerings that we’d never see him do in Metallica. Btw, I’d love to see all the guys try some solo work that’s different from the Metallica I’ve loved my entire life. It would be cool to see them try new things. I personally loved Lulu and St. Anger, but I realize that’s not the popular opinion lol. These guys should be able to explore and experiment!
Old Les Pauls has to be worked, not super easy players, and even if being a pro player anything unfamiliar is just that: unfamiliar, like it is for everyone. Nice sounding stuff has to be practised, and Kirk said this was stuff he never had played which he loves but yes it was hard for him. He really struggled LoL but nothing strange with that
They got into playing their own material at such a young age and have been touring and recording. I can imagine this all develop you in a very specific way regarding muscle memory. In the end it all comes down to practice and the scope of it. Also kirk was never a rhythm guitarist, even if he plays the riffs hes way sloppier than james. Still love the guy and his playing has shaped my own also.

He's pretty honest and open about this stuff not being his thing (clean RnB/Jazz chords are obviously not at all what he does in Metallica) so, I can't help but like him and respect him for still wanting to learn things outside of his comfort zone.
I've always known Kirk was a bit quirky, but dam he's blazed in this.
Hats off to Rick for letting him be himself. You're a legend Rick...
Kirk perma-blazed himself at some point in the '90s. I don't think he's actually on drugs any more, his brain is just fried to bits.
He is sober...
He is quirky. That is what makes him likeable and interesting to listen to.
Quirk Hammet
@@freebird3234 I'm glad for him that he is sober, but man, he seems "off" in a lot of this interview.
Still my favorite interview. Two guys in love with guitar.
Finding out about Jimi's strings sent me down a rabbit hole, spent a few years not even learning a new song or anything really related to playing because I was swapping strings just to play a few riffs at least a few times a day.
Thought he was gonna play This Charming Man for a second there at 0:20
Those were the opening chords for that song I swear! I thought I was the only one who would have thought that here.
First thing that came to my mind, too 👍🏻
Same here!
Now I wonder if Marr ripped it off lol
Kirk wouldn't be able to play it tbh
KH is an icon. Class act that is full of knowledge. He really shaped a genre.
Pretty average guitarist but yes icon
Icon...? Nowadays everything can be an icon i see
@@michnyy"nowadays"? They started in the 70s and blew up in the 80s. How is 40 years ago "nowadays"?
@@GameTimeWhy Was he called an icon in '70s or '80s? I don't think so. I wrote nowadays because he is called that recently in relation to his long term career.
@@michnyy in the 80s he was an icon.
I never was a Kirk Hammett fan, but watching his interview I can definitely tell why he has mass appeal to the crowd.
He and Robert are the nice guys of the band. And because they are the nice guys of the band they get shafted by the a-holes of the band. But they have LOTS of money to comfort themselves and Kirk seems to be happy doing what he does, make and play music.
Well Lars comes across as a bit of a knob, but James seems like a nice guy tbh. I saw some live footage recently where kirk completely screwed up a part, a James put his arm around kirk like a loving brother, as to say its all cool bro. @@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623
All guitarists are always learning. Remember, he became famous on stuff HE WROTE. As a guitar player myself, things you come up with on your own is much EASIER to play than other music. Also, alot of these guys never play it the same way twice, there can always be some variation, to keep it fresh!!
You know I just love Kirk Hammett and anything and everything he does he just like so cool and humble ❤❤
“Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Michael Schenker” ❤
Nice to hear the German guitar master mentioned in a Rick Beato video!
Schenker brothers are guitar heroes to many many people no matter if you are Kirk or a random guy like me
Anyone who knows guitar knows michael schenker is an absolute master
So, you didn’t see the That Metal Show episode with Kirk and Michael. Kirk idolizes Schenker.
Kirk Hammett had a column in guitar world and he always talked about how Schenker was a massive influence on him
Really enjoyed his enthusiasm. Makes me like him for his fire and how much he cares & loves music.
Kirk loves music and horror and has so much knowledge...dude is awesome...this is much appreciated sirs...
Finally someone has taken the time to talk about different woods for guitars, variants of sound and tones from different guage strings and even hand strengthening exercises using unusual chords. Absolutely class video.
Rick what an amazing sit down. Keep up the fantastic work.
Omg! Kirk knows and loves "Turn It On Again" by Genesis! Amazing interview.

I did not see that one coming lol
@@BeerLeagueGoalieGodfather me either! Who knew?
I mean, he was in Exodus.
You got it bro jajj
@@jamesshelley5912 this is a good point. Even if Exodus is a different genre than Genesis.
Yea Boy, so cool having Kirk on!
Just living vicariously thru Rick at this point. Keep climbing Brother, you’re doing amazing things 😎🙌🏽
Greeny is a weird guitar to play stuff on
Old Les Pauls has to be worked, not super easy players, and even if being a pro player anything unfamiliar is just that: unfamiliar, like it is for everyone. Nice sounding stuff has to be practised, and Kirk said this was stuff he never had played which he loves but yes it was hard for him. He really struggled LoL but nothing strange with that
@@NoobGamingXXX because youve really put in some time with it im sure
@@Urohpls no because of the feedback of its owners through time !
I remember a few months ago watching this whole interview and I don't remember him saying he had his own album out! So I just listen to it, (Portals) and I think it's fugin awesome! Dam Kirk! Why didn't you promote this like a boss?! I mean dam . I been a fan forever and I'm just now hearing this? I think his playing and song writing ability is VERY dynamitic! Good job Kirk!
That first one sounded like the beginning of the song “This Charming Man” by The Smiths!
What an amazing guy. Just a beautiful human being. Thanks, Rick, for showing us a side of Kirk Hammett we don't often get to see in this sort of depth.
I am so happy to hear this interview! I also feel like Kirk does about all the influences he cited here, and I am so happy to know I am not the only one! Thank you Rick!
That was such a genuine, and cool interview, thnx
Jimmy was constantly tuning his ride during concerts. He was all over the tuning after every song.
I'm happy to be in the 13% that watches and is subscribed. Your content is great. Thank you!
Kirk rocks, thank you so much for having him on and you rock too my friend.
I actually use a Hendrickx set of strings on my Strat with those gauges I stay in standard tuning, but still. Amazing. He knew what he was doing.
Good lord, for Beato to pick out Turn it on Again from a riff is very impressive
That is Peter Green's guitar (Fleetwood Mac).
In the hands of a tool.
And later Gary Moore's

Kirk has always been wildly underrated as both a guitar player and as a person.
I am inspired by the listening skills of Rick Beato, in that he always allows the Musicians the time and space to shine. So cool.
So happy to see Greenie being played on a regular basis. What a history it has! Great video Rick!
So, great interview and I love Kirk but he is definitely bombed here!! Or am I wrong?
Mos def
It’s, he is. Or he’s fucked, because of all the shit he did back in the day. I think he’s tweaking on something.
I think he's invested a lot of his money in Columbia. 🙄
Who cares if he is lol (as long as it's nothing too dangerous of course). A succesful musician being high or smth is nothing new lmao
Totally agree
Knowing a chord is one thing but playing it correctly is a whole different story.
This was a great interview, really enjoyed it.
I play mainly hardcore, with some leads and a rare solo. The Dean Markley 2558 set are my jam. I don't use the 10, so my set goes high to low at 13-17-30-42-52 and I tune to drop-C! The beef and chop on my Charvel really make me happy!
All metal players need to be doing this too because it makes you a much better and more well rounded player.
Cool video, but, at no point did Kirk say "these are my three favorites" he just gave examples of some riffs he was playing with.
he starts with " i want you back " louie shelton/the jackson 5
Love Kirk he's amazing. Huge inspiration for me.
wow
"Positions my hands are not accustomed too"
TOO GOOD!! \m/
I literally learned by ear, no lessons. I love his enthusiasm to just figure things out. Never stop the love for learning. I've written songs to the rhythm of the dryer, everything is in the ear of the beholder.
G’day Rick, It’s hard to keep up with one Rick haha. But subscribed for you mate 💕. Been subscribed for years on your other channels 😘🤘Great interview ❤️
I think this channel is great Rick beato two is a great Channel I enjoy it very much keep those videos coming job well done
Power of Love
Love Kirk still having such love for music. I am 64, have played 52 years and feel the exact same way so I can definitely relate.
Love his passion for playing guitar, even after playing for many decades!! Still seems like a kid who just picked up the guitar!
I hope one day you dig into deep cuts with Gers, Murray and Smith from Maiden. If you haven’t listened to the song Starblind yet Rick give it a try!
@suspicionofdeceit same. There is so many videos of Smith playing crazy stuff. Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Black Crowes, Clapton,

Kirk is such an emotional and genuine guy. Sometimes when he talks i think he's going to tear up 😢.
What an amazing person and phenomenal guitarist!!! Great interview Rick!!!
Refreshing to listen to Kirk without Lars interrupting and hijacking’s the conversation
LOVE GARY'S GUITAR.
Peter's guitar.
GARY. (Del Boy)
It's called Greeny for a reason.
Sitting with one of my favorite of 3 guitar players Kirk and James are two of favorites another one I love is Randy Roads I would love to jam with both James and Kirk! That would be a dream come true!
Such a great interview, Rick, and yes, I am subscribed here lol. I never realized how much Kirk Hammett was still a student of the guitar in the sense of striving to learn new things whether it's chords, fingering, grip or even string gauges. So fascinating.
0:19 Did that guy happen to be Johnny Marr?
Pretty sure that riff was This Charming Man right out of the gate on this interview? Excellent interview

Hello rick! Nice video! Could you try talkíng with D-A-D's lead guitarist Jacob Binzer? Hes the best guitarist in Denmark and is soo underated, he could probably make for a very interesting video
Nobody knows who that is
Great interview!

Kirk is so enthusiastic, it's always pleasant to hear him talk.
I don't know what that Genesis song is but it reminded me of something Keith Richards would play
