Exactly!!! Like advocating freedom of speech to express yourself there in that video with an oppressive symbol is allowed, agreeable, and understandable, but not for this instance discussed in this video? You can hide behind an old flag and the support that you know you'd get from other like-minded alongside you, but what Colin Kaepernick did was brave because it was new and highly relevant. And though being widely supported wasn't guaranteed, he didn't let this stop him from expressing his truths and using this as a platform to create space for a new discussion. "Democracy is hypocrisy (Malcolm X)." Still true to this day. The difference between this video from the one about the confederate flag is that the students advocating for it don't have a strong connection or belief in it, but the kneeling to Kaepernick had meant so much more to him, making it that much more powerful. th-cam.com/video/qNfAFfu6VD0/w-d-xo.html (quick 1 minute video if you don't understand the quote)

I serve in the United States Army. It's your right to sit, kneel, or stand during the national anthem. I will always stand because I serve this country, but I don't care if you sit kneel or stand. Kneeling is a peaceful protest, it doesn't hurt anyone or anybody except people's feelings. I love this country to death but by no means it's perfect. My only issue is I think each and everyday we become more and more divided.
I think it's only the "patriots" (conservatives or just racist people) who think kneeling during the national anthem is disgraceful even tho it's one of our rights.
@@Bird.Lover6000 But I wouldn't call them patriots. I'm a patriot, so I know our rights. And it's Kaepernick's Constitutional right to protest in this way.
The confederate flag debate they were all "I have the right to fly it, I don't care if you're offended" But this Colin Kaepernick debate he's wrong and should leave the U.S? But yet that's his first amendment right to do so just like it was there's to fly the flag.... 😑
Good point, yet most people tend to line up on the same side, either pro flying the flag and anti Kaepernick, or anti flag and pro Kaepernick. Many people don't respect others viewpoints, just the one they champion.
@Michael Bobkov the constitution wasn't for black men it was originally written for white men. 2nd why don't all of y'all leave and see if the U.S becomes more peaceful. "And blow kisses at your inadequate wife, mother and sister who got the right to vote after the black man."
@Fjj veterans fought for our right to be able to protest against america, it's not disrespecting them at all. if people aren't allowed to speak their mind fully, even if it is critical of the u.s, why have a free country? veterans fought for us to speak our minds and doing that is not disrespectful
@Fjj "your people"? Don't say that it sounds derogatory and belittling and you know it. Be respectful and say African American or just American because you'll don't call yourself European American. Also, American patriotism started slavery in the first place... what do you want us to say, "thank you." America has a lot to work on especially with racial issues.
Fjj the south is apart of america and american culture. Also slavery was all over America and American Territories starting with the 13 colonies when America was still under British rule.
@Fjj I dont know why you keep arguing that this form of protest disrespects the military and its veterans. Kaepernick got a lot of support from military personnel not because they agreed with his messages necessarily, but because they respect his right to protest. In fact, as others have pointed out, the kneeling element was a suggestion by a veteran, since taking a knee is something that is done in the military. You've also tried to separate history for some reason as if slavery, segregation, and the overall bigotry experienced by black Americans is somehow the fault of the south. America is one country with one history - you don't see Germany not taking responsibility for nazis or trying to argue that that was just Hitler and not Germany itself. You're allowed to love the US and be patriotic, but people who recognize an issue within a country and try to bring attention to it and change it are just as patriotic and you should not fault them for their actions. The constitution may have been written over 300 years ago, but its only been in the last 50 years that black people have seen some sort of equality in America. And even then, it hasn't been great. So just because he's protesting and people are agreeing with it does not make them ungrateful or unAmerican or automatically mean that they don't recognize the sacrifices of the military

Whose interpretation it is saying kneeling is disrespectful. Disrespectful is when you turn your back against the flag and anthem. You kneel when you are proposing, you kneel to face your king, you get down on both knee to pray. Kneeling is a gesture of humbleness and submission. What Colin did to me signify "I respect you but I can't bring myself to stand when my brothers and sister being discriminate, killed and socially profiled."
Shout out to the young black queen with the braids for speaking up. She's the female version of Chris in this video. It's so disturbing that all these young people had no issue with flying a flag that represents traitors and and losers...but has an issue with a man respectfully using his first amendment rights.
Fjj Of course people are aware of men AND women across seas fighting for our rights. But you have to know that it’s their first amendment right to protests. Technically protesters aren’t protesting veterans. They are protesting the systemic racism of the country. The injustices in this country.
@Fjj Kaepernick was advised by a teammate who was a former member of the armed forces that he should kneel instead of sit, he's respecting the troops and the 1st amendment and so is Jasmine. It pisses me off when you and all of these people have done NOTHING for their country and absolutely ABUSE those rights and openly disrespect the people who faught for those rights. You can protest somewhere else. Do not tread on my flag.
Luke Thomas Should he protest away from cameras, from the public eye? Somewhere no one can see, where no one can be affected by his protest? Kaepernick is not treading on any flag-he is merely showing his distaste for an unhealthy American habit of police racism.
Owen Hope First thing, he was raised by rich white parents, so he has probably had most things handed to him, which is pretty ironic. Second thing, he can go anywhere else. He has cameras on him all the time. Why would you attack the thing that symbolizes your right to protest. The one thing that symbolizes those who have died for that right. It’s not ok and he got what he deserved.
Luke Thomas How on Earth does kneeling during the anthem disrespect troops in any way? The flag and anthem represent the nation as a whole, not just the armed forces.
Matthew Pham but he has done nothing for this nation as a whole, and has been privileged all his life. He of all people should not do that to the flag. He is disrespecting the armed forces because they have given up everything for this country as a whole just for him to slash it like that.
they only did it because they realized racism wasn't profitable anymore. don't buy into the NFL's bs. what Kapernick did was morally just, and an act of good faith. what the NFL did was the opposite. they did it to win goody-goody points from POC and the Black community in America.

_Caden_ Yea I’m so sorry but That’s not racism. When a black person walks into a store and feels unwelcome and is treated worse than others than that is racism. When a white person walks into a black owned business and doesn’t feel welcome, well tbh I don’t really care bc they have every right too. A white person being treated unfairly due to race is veryyy unlikely and when you experience that then I’m glad for you because you get to experience what it’s like to be African American every single day.

True
As a non white person, I don’t understand why you would feel bad for the students of color.
This school seems to offer students a chance to have these types of conversation. All these students have the ability to articulate their opinions in a very calm and intelligent way.
I wish I had this class when I was in high school.
Debbie Martin I do understand where you are coming from and you do make a valid point. It is great that these kids can have these conversations. What a meant when I said I felt bad was that it must be frustrating. Both you and I know that the kneeling protest has nothing to do with the flag and our troops. And so do all non whites who have experienced any sort of discrimination. So when people are ignorant to that I’m sure it frustrates you just as much as me. Because then the whole point of the protest gets nullified under a different conversation. That’s what I meant. Also, thanks for not just throwing curse words at me as most people in the comments tend to do.

That's the racist one right there!"
That's the SJW one right there!
Anyone here in 2020 after NFL said they were *wrong* about the peaceful kneeling protests?
lol crazy what happens when people don't listen.
Kapernick tried to warn us but we didn’t listen
@@VMohdude- Yup
they only did it because they realized racism wasn't profitable anymore. don't buy into the NFL's bs. what Kapernick did was morally just, and an act of good faith. what the NFL did was the opposite. they did it to win goody-goody points from POC and the Black community in America.
I'm here for it 😊
Yup. You are going to see a lot of kneeling this season, especially with the death of George Floyd.
“If he doesn’t like it, he can just leave” the same types of ppl that are against immigration
Yeah but No one is against immigration
poopcat ..... if you wanted me to say illegal immigration then lol bc it shouldn’t take fucking years to get documents and live in fright
Alondra Lugo say it louder for the ignorant ppl in the back sis!!!!!
Breeanna Flores Congrats on saying nothing
people are against Illegal Immigration, I have absolutely no problem with people legally immigranting.
I JUST FUCKING REALIZED. These kids (some of them) argued that the confederate flag is protected by the 1st amendment but kneeling or sitting during a pledge to the flag is wrong… make it make sense
I disagree with the mindset of “if he doesn’t like it he should just leave.” America is his home too and if he is discontent with the racism occurring here he has every right to peacefully protest. It’s his civil duty as a citizen to fight for what he believes is right in a non-violent way. That is how we grow and improve- having the bravery to fight for change and what you believe is right.
yeah protesting just makes things worse tho
@@peenhead9938 then what should they do , just no protesting ?
@@omonighoojeaga1820 I dont think protesting ever makes a difference, so its pointless imo. It usually just causing more conflict and disagreement
@@peenhead9938 there is always going to be discourse around any issue, that's inevitable.Protestong shows that people are tired of the treatment and it amplifies what people are talking about
@@omonighoojeaga1820Just look what protesting did this year. whether it was the riots and looting in cities or the charge at the capital. That definitely made what they were standing for look bad.
That kid sounds like trump 2019:
“If he doesn’t like it he can leave”
Jacob Reedy do you know why he kneeled? To protest the unjust killing of minorities. A school shooter can kill 20 ppl and walk out unharmed. A black man can have something that looks like a gun and be killed instantly. That’s why he kneeled. You must be racist. Saying he can leave does not promote change, so you must not want it.
@Jacob Reedy if we don't kneel we basically saying slavery is okay
@Jacob Reedy but half of them and up homeless I don't see AMERICA helping these old veterans
@Jacob Reedy 👌👌👌
@Jacob Reedy you can leave as well it belongs to natives not you
I SEE CHRISTOPHER BUT HE NOT SAYING NOTHING. He must’ve ate to much greens at the cookout.
Eian2K 😂😂
ikr if they do another one i hope he’s up for speaking some more. he makes great points backed up with facts
I feel like he's shy about speaking up this time. He didn't have the same passion that he had before. The teacher seems to like to make a joke our of him, but you could already tell from the confederate flag video that his classmates don't respect him. I feel like he probably got bullied at school when the cameras were of and didn't want to draw attention to himself.
@@sumchick345 righttt it makes me sad when the kids laugh cause one hes the most educated
