The thing is you are paying $500 for a product that sounds marginally better than its $300 competitors, less comfortable due to heavy weight, and less portable due to the bra case. I have a pair of beats studio, beats x, and airpods and don't think the connectivity feature is all that amazing. Sure it saves me from having to open bluetooth and hit connect but is it enough to justify the $200 price bump over similar or maybe even better performing headphones such as the QC35? For most nonaudiophiles $500 is super premium and for audiophiles this headphone sounds very mediocre for $500. This headphone appeals to those who want an Apple product (not a negative, as apple has a reputation for putting out reliable products) and those who know nothing about audio.

I'm considering getting these for daily use. Since it is an apple product there are a lot of 3rd party cases and silicon covers than exist for the airpods max which I would buy to protect such an expensive device.
Been using my pair since the new year when I got them, and I love them so much. I was really disappointed with the Pros after all the issues I had, and now I use the Max’s for at home listening and the normal Airpods for work and exercise. Perfect setup for me👌
Very good review. I appreciate your pitch for the unheralded features of the airpod max. I have now seen over 30 TH-cam reviews of the airpod max and very unfortunately, not a single reviewer has even mentioned what would be the most important feature of the airpod max for me. I am a Professor and CoVID-19 has forced me and all my colleagues to teach many hours a day through Skype, Zoom, Webex, Go-to-Meeting, etc. One of my most difficult problem is to find a quiet environment where nobody can make any noise around me when I am teaching or making a comference call. You and others who make TH-cam video know how critical and difficult it is to create a quiet environment for yourself and how intrusive it is to force everybody around you to be quiet. If you are a parent with children, you know what it is like to have to shush your children. In theory, the Airpod Max should be able to cancel noise from your microphone in your earcups. If the Airpod Max can subtract ambient noise from my voice in the earcups and can send my voice to my audience without background or incoming sounds, that would be worth $1000 for me. I ordered the Max but it will not arrive until March, so I cannot try it for myself. I wish people will stop saying over and over again how much they hate the earphone covers. Enough already. For $12-20, you can buy from Amazon more than a dozen hard case that would allow you to protect the airpod max from scratches and dirt. I wish people will stop complaining about the lack of an on-off switch. The earphones go to sleep after a few minutes and 12 hours of sleep use less than 5% of the battery power. I wish reviewer would spend my time with greater care and respect (yes, we consumers are spending our precious time to listen to opinions and they should not be inane). I would like to hear analyses of the sound stage, the directionality of the sound, ability to change the frequency profile, the presence of distortion, and the presence of delays between the timing of mouth movements and voice. Also, for people with hearing loss, the transparency mode with frequency adjustments have the potential to be an intelligent hearing aid. I wish that that they could have a voice output jack so that we know what is being sent out to the audience.
It takes you wearing one and listening to anything sound with the Airpod Max to understand this good review fully. I got the Sony XM4. I couldn't survive the headache and discomfort. Switched to Airpod Max and my life has been beautiful with sound. It's expensive but worth it. Thanks for the review bro.
Great review. Thank you for expanding this review to more than just music, and talking about the case (which I think is more of a cover) and how much they cost.
Thanks a lot Chris. I was going back and forth between the max and the MX5 and when you mentioned the lightening to jack cable, that helped me to seal the deal. I wished I watched your video a week ago!
Trust me they are and I’m a postal worker and i use them all day on my shift whether I’m listening to a pod or music, , and soon as somebody ready to talk i put transparency mode on which work amazing, funny thing is people be looking lost like how you hear me lol
Do you have a 5.1 or atmos speaker system? Spatial audio sounds NOTHING like that. You get head tracking, but there is no depth, nor any rear channel further than a few inches from your head. True multichannel creates a sound field that is bigger than your room, opening up the sound so it can feel like you're in a cathedral or outside. You don't get that without primary depth cues. A Smyth Realiser can sort of do that, but all the AirPods can do is pan stuff right and left as you turn your head. It is possible to do with headphones and a good processor, but the iPad with AirPods don't do that because there is no attempt at HRTF.
So 4 months later, are you still good with these? What about spatial audio support on the Apple TV 4K? I sometimes put on my Bose Q35 to watch entertainment without disturbing the house and would love to have the Spatial audio support now with these.
You nailed this review. I use the Max, Bang and Olufsen HX and the Bose Q35 Ii and 700 virtually every day. And, when the weather is iffy I use the Bose earbuds. That’s a lot of headphones and a lot of money; however, no one yet makes the perfect headphones. I also do not wear the same shirt and pants every day. All that said, the Max does do more things better than any similar product.
Do you know if the headphones can be connected to 2 devices? For example if I am working on my computer and using them and suddenly someone call me on my cell phone.
Chris you are so right on target! Thanks for your review! The overall user experience, Apple functionality and amazing sound quality easily makes these one of the best Apple products I have ever bought. This evening I took a long walk with my AirPods Max and it was quite cold and with the Digital Crown and ANC control button and "Hey Siri" integration I was able to easily operate my headphones with heavy gloves on with an ease that would have never been possible with my Bose NC 700 or Sony XM4s with swipe controls. Those other headphones are excellent but the "ease of use" within the Apple ecosystem will have e reaching for my AirPods Max most of the time moving forward.
You describe my use of these AirPod Max at work, perfectly. My coworkers are jealous 😂 I keep them on my head most of the day and can get away with listening to audiobooks, hearing my messages and taking calls while not interrupting my work. They are perfect for the office. They keep people from talking to me while I listen to conversations around me… a real bonus.
That's also why I'm buying them. I have wired headphones for dedicated music listening, but wired headphones are too cumbersome for general use at my computer.
The experience of the airpods max, call quality and sync is really awesome on the airpods max, transparency mode, switching to apple devices, boise cancelling and sound... It just does everything well, I actually find it more comfortable than the Sonys to be honest because it stays cool and the large cups dont press on the ears. Spatial audio is amazing also.
I use headphones probably 80% of the time at home and it’s most likely more than that. The only time I listen to music is typically only in the car going to and from work. At home, I’m playing games, school, watching movies, tv, etc. Big media content consumer as I’m doing right now with my Bose 700’s and iPad Pro. I’ve thought about buying these since I’m a big Apple user but I’m worried about the battery life and the lack of a “case.” I can see Apple bringing the gyro to the Apple TV with the rumored upcoming new model. It would make sense to bring that feature to all main devices.
My main concern is longevity, will they last? They won’t last as long as hi end wired headphones which last for decades, but at this price point they need to last at least 10 years before the batteries start giving up etc.
It’s been a WHOLE 2 weeks since these shipped.. that white will no doubt turn beige at BEST over time.. let’s say 6 months to a year of consistent use.
Great video. I can’t wait until I get mine. They are scheduled to be delivered Jan 6. I am a person who is deep in the apple ecosystem and I know I going to love them too and for people like me. The price isn’t really a issue either. I do have a problem with the case too. The first third party case I’ve seen is by Waterfiled and I’m sure other companies will soon follow. Therefore I don’t see even the case being an issue in the future. I watch a video from audio engineers who work for Abyss and they brought up a really interesting point and that was the ability for these headphones to be upgraded by software/apps in the future and I believe that will really set them apart.
All AirPods models can be updated by firmware upgrades from Apple. This has been true since the original AirPods. Still, software upgrades cannot bestow functions that the hardware within is not able to support. That’s why we can expect more functionality out of the AirPods Max than from the AirPods Pro. The Pros only have one H1 chip and obviously smaller drivers compared to the AirPods Max.
@@db4a I’m aware of that. I am suggesting like with most apple products there are hardware capabilities that haven’t been unlocked yet i.e. Apple photo raw that is only available on iPhone 12 and wasn’t unlocked until a software update. I would imagine that the air pod Max will have capabilities that the air pods and AirPod pros don’t.
@@db4a yes, I agree. Apple raw was just an one example. This is just my theory and I believe will see the air pod Max do thing they currently don’t in the future. The other point I was making is that you don’t see this with non apple products as much and that’s just another thing that separates them from other brands.
I noticed that as well as i was watching the video, crisp, clean and high quality! Also, great content and thanks for the review i actually needed to hear. I only listen to music about 1% of the day. The rest is entertainment and work for me.
I have watch so many airpod max videos because I’m looking to get me a pair off theses this has to be the best airpod max review I have watch on TH-cam most TH-camr are saying the same thing talking about the sound only but I wanted to know how they work with everything music, videos, movies and u have answer that thanks I’m looking to get theses for my ipad max and for my gaming pc great review my friend.
I own a pair of AirPods max, Bose qc 35 ii, Bose 700, and at one point I had the Sonys xm4... Bose qc 35 ii and 700 are definitely more comfortable (long term use), than the max. But the max audio is so crisp!! and the auto switching is sweet too. so I keep my apple AirPods max mostly for home use, while I take the qc 35 ii for travel.
Been wanting these headphones ever since they came out, been using airpods first gen ever since they came out and they are still holding up, sadly the price tag is what is holding me back, but maybe after my first gen aren't even usable anymore I might upgrade
I would want the airpods max however, I feel like the version 2 will be better in every way. I really hope apple will do a price drop or make a budget version of theses.
Did you successfully use them to monitor your audio for the podcast? I am trying to use them to monitor for a podcast as well, but I can't get it to work. Its as if the bluetooth connects and cancels out the fact that I have the headphones plugged in with the lighting to 3.5. Any suggestions to make it work?
I can SSOOOOOOO relate to your spatial audio comment. I have to start to take them off to make sure the audio isn’t playing through the device’s speaker and blasting around the room. It sounds so good!
Man...I give you a lot of credit. Writing is something I need 100% focus on so I always turn off any background distractions and let the headphone's excellent ANC do it's thing. That said...you are right on about the spatial audio and movies! I just installed the tvOS 15 Beta on my AppleTV 4K (official release this fall is going to include support for spatial audio which wasn't announced when you posted this review) and watched the trailer for the latest Fast and Furious movie and I was like..."What the hell...this sounds like it's playing over my home theater speakers!". I had to take my headphones off to make sure it wasn't blasting through my home theater system and my neighbors would be knocking on my door any second! Simply amazing! And for me...this alone makes the price tag 100% worth it! If you live in an apartment complex like I do...then this is a great alternative to watching movies with spatial audio "surround sound" and not upsetting the neighbors below and beside you! Another amazing feature Apple recently released before this review is Dolby Atmos for music FREE on Apple Music! Again...this feature alone is worth the price of admission! I listened to an old classic I grew up with by Queen titled Another One Bites The Dust and good lord...the Dolby Atmos remastered version blew me away! So, I am totally satisfied with these headphones for use at home, the plane, office, etc. Of course these are NOT meant for the gym for several reasons so I use my excellent in-ear headphones for that.
Just saw an article about someone who complained about condensation in the earcups under the removable pads even though he said he was „mainly“ inside. Did you notice anything like that?
I was gonna get these today from somebody but can’t shake the worry that the condensation problem so many are having might affect them long term. Seems like too much of a gamble
you talk about editing with it but what about latency? is the audio really precise to whats happening on the timeline? Especially when doing something like cutting to the beat?
As for me nope. But then again I don’t workout with these at all and the warm weather is just starting up so maybe when it’s insanely hot I will see those effects
I recently grew OUT of the design and look of the AirPods max’s just from seeing them in reviews and I didn’t expect that. I also heard the sound quality(which will forever be subjective between each person) and it’s the only thing I really care about but there were other headphones that sounds better to me for my taste and preference of music. When it comes to headphones, everything outside of music quality mean very little to me(subjective).
Just got mine, I’ve also taken them off assuming I had the programme playing of my iPad. Spacial audio on these things are crazy! I like the hinges on the joints to helps the longer lasting more comfortable fit
It’s funny, I agree with everything you said here and like you have gotten a lot of flack. It was tough for a minute to drop the cash to get these, but I couldn’t be happier with my work/personal flow using these. Like you said, outstanding sound, ANC, comfort, quality, and the seamless switching really sets them apart for my use case. After having them for a bit, I couldn’t be happier. Putting them on at home when I need to knock something out without distractions is a sweet experience, and the hear-through is on another level!
Nice video thanks. I guess the problem with headphones is that not many people use it for work purposes! Majority of people want something for music. I tried these headphones and I found the noise canceling and music quality to be better than Sony. But it doesn’t worth that much money for what I may use it for. I can pay 60% less and get Sony and it does a very good job.
That’s kind of the point of this video. Sony’s don’t take advantage of the Apple ecosystem. This may not seem like a big deal but to those of use who use multiple Apple products, the AirPod Max integration is awesome. There are features you can’t replicate with other headphones. Btw, I own Sony MX4s as well. They are great for music. But I can get that experience and more with my AirPod Max.
Music sounds better after adjusting headphone accommodations in accessibility in my opinion. Apart from that, I was not aware how noisy my environment was before using Airpods Max. 👍 And it is so easy to switch between devices.
thanks for the review. I would like to buy them, too, there are three things that prevent me currently from doing that. (1) I wear glasses. My Sennheiser headphones get uncomfortable. No idea how it is here (2) why did Apple NOT implement a switch to turn them off? even Ultra-low-power mode still consumes power. Should I not use them for 2 weeks they will drain the battery 🔋 and as we all know a battery just lives a certain amount of battery cycles (3) why on earth did Apple not implement an equalizer? Maybe I want to listen to my Music not like the Apple engineers indended? Maybe I want more base? maybe I want less mids? - so: I am still struggling, as I do see the advantages of these headphones for me over Sony XM4s or Bose, like surround sound.
@@thatsfinn I did get them however I haven’t tried editing yet with them, I’ll let you know when I do. But I’d guess they will perform similarly to AirPods Pro
Lol great video! Actually im in a veeery similar work/use situation as you, and i know i will love them if i get them! BUUUUT im worried about the whole water/moisture gathering in ear cups thing! Has that happened for you? What do you think about that issue?
Fantastic review! Thank you. You use them exactly the way I intend to use mine (mostly office phone calls and background music) when they arrive, so this was EXTRA helpful. Cheers.
Ayye you jam Andy Mineo. You just became much cooler in my book. Thanks for the review, I’m one step closer to getting some for myself because of how well you’ve ‘sold’ them.
I always like your relaxed and very clear presentation. Your review of the AirPod Max based on your personal use over the past few weeks was very interesting and informative. I currently love my AirPod Pros but I’m going to grab the Max now. 👍
Great video - like the alternative use case review, as I think many basic consumers, myself included, have to figure in using any headphones for more than just music. I spend far more time with my AirPod Pro’s for non-music use, so the AirPod Max would be the same. The one thing I would like to know about the Max’s, is how much heat builds up when wearing them for hours at a time? My biggest complaint with my Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2’s are that my ears start cooking, especially when using them on continental and intercontinental flights. Hasn’t been an issue this year, but I’m assuming that will change again in 2021.
Still worth it. I love streaming shows on Apple TV+ and Netflix. And I need to have Dolby Atmos. I use these so I don't wake anyone in my house. on the TV or on my iPad Pro. And I can focus on my accounting class even in a coffee house in the city 🌆 with its NC. Love mine. Just got mine replaced because since I got these in 2021 They have been buggy and losing connection. The new ones under warranty made me love it more now. These are amazing for movies 🎥and shows. I feel things move behind me and hear things above me too. True surround from Apple. Can't wait to see what they do next for streaming.
I dig your videos and your take on these headphones. SO MUCH BITCHING about them out there and I dig that you can describe things and share you opinion without attacking. Great video!

Do you also get some pressure while wearing them? (Probably due to the noise cancellation) If so does it go away?
I got them and wow they sound sooo clear
You describe my use of these AirPod Max at work, perfectly. My coworkers are jealous 😂 I keep them on my head most of the day and can get away with listening to audiobooks, hearing my messages and taking calls while not interrupting my work. They are perfect for the office. They keep people from talking to me while I listen to conversations around me… a real bonus.
You nailed it. This got me convinced. Thanks.
That's also why I'm buying them. I have wired headphones for dedicated music listening, but wired headphones are too cumbersome for general use at my computer.
They are great but the condensation worries me a lil
Great, well rounded review. I watched this using my Apple AirPods Max! 😁
What phone case are you using in this video
Mine arrived today. I was impressed.
I found the same lightning-to-headphone jack adapter on Amazon for $9.58.
This is the first video about AirPods Max, that I have seen, that brings the right point about the headphones!!! It was refreshing! Thank you!!!!
Although if they continue in popularity I’m sure people will start modding these and swapping out a headband might not be an issue.
I might use low power mode
So looking forward to my new pair of AirPod Max for Christmas this year.
@@CRobbins131 But Apple told us about that during the keynote for the iPhones. So it wasn’t a surprise just a delayed feature.
@@db4a yes, I agree. Apple raw was just an one example. This is just my theory and I believe will see the air pod Max do thing they currently don’t in the future. The other point I was making is that you don’t see this with non apple products as much and that’s just another thing that separates them from other brands.
This channels quality is that of a channel with millions of subscribers, keep up the great work!!
I noticed that as well as i was watching the video, crisp, clean and high quality! Also, great content and thanks for the review i actually needed to hear. I only listen to music about 1% of the day. The rest is entertainment and work for me.
Wow thanks for the nice words Azer!
Thanks Roberto! That was a big realization for me too...
Great video. Ordered mine but they don't arrive until feb 21. But my idea of use case was what exactly as you illustrate.
Great perspective, I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago they arrive next week so there seems to be a strong demand for them.
What monitor are you using here Chris?
I just ordered some silver AirPods max on Ebay at a good price... Can’t wait to try them out!
Uuuummmm how much??😂😂😂😂
What brand of phone case is that? I love the colour, where can I get one? Oh….and I love my AirPods max, best headphones I’ve ever owned 👌🏻
My Airpods Max have the same humming sound when I move my head as the Airpods Pro had when they were defect. Is that normal?
I have the white ones. Clean! just put on silicon covers around the grey headphone and covers
Great review. Been wondering about how to buy them or not. Im going to spend the money, even if its 750 dollars in Norway.
900 in Australia 🤦🏽♂️
Thank you for providing a broader picture.
Just saw an article about someone who complained about condensation in the earcups under the removable pads even though he said he was „mainly“ inside. Did you notice anything like that?
It’s an anomaly. Most people haven’t experienced this. I wouldn’t worry about it.
I was gonna get these today from somebody but can’t shake the worry that the condensation problem so many are having might affect them long term. Seems like too much of a gamble
All of it’s features that you enjoy are also in the AirPods Pro right?
you talk about editing with it but what about latency? is the audio really precise to whats happening on the timeline? Especially when doing something like cutting to the beat?
Which monitor are you using in your setup? That thing is massive!
LG 49”
Did you find that they developed moisture on the inside of the cushions or droplets on the drivers?
As for me nope. But then again I don’t workout with these at all and the warm weather is just starting up so maybe when it’s insanely hot I will see those effects
I recently grew OUT of the design and look of the AirPods max’s just from seeing them in reviews and I didn’t expect that. I also heard the sound quality(which will forever be subjective between each person) and it’s the only thing I really care about but there were other headphones that sounds better to me for my taste and preference of music. When it comes to headphones, everything outside of music quality mean very little to me(subjective).
Then AirPods Max is not for you. Live long and prosper. 🖖
Yeeeah, kinda noticed that a couple minutes ago.
How's the latency for video editing on them?
It started out bad for wireless but I have absolutely zero issues with them for the last couple months
Just got mine, I’ve also taken them off assuming I had the programme playing of my iPad. Spacial audio on these things are crazy! I like the hinges on the joints to helps the longer lasting more comfortable fit
How are you finding them one week later? Worth the purchase?
Just ordered! Delivery Mar.1-5☹️
Are you absolutely sure Spatial Audio is available on Netflix?
Nice review, Chris. I bought them last week. With the latest update, no problems at all. No weigth issues and a perfect sound.
Is it possible to press the crown to mute your mic or anything
(i think so).
I love my AirPods Max. Definitely one of my best purchases! Also, love the vid!😄
thanks for the review.
How’s the latency during video editing? Ive had problems with Bluetooth editing in the past and I’m wondering if they have the same problem
Did you end up getting them? Was wondering about this exactly.
My pair literally just came I love them so much
Those work with Apple TV 4K box with the spacial sound function? That would be game changing for me :)
Oh lel, ok, just got to that part of the review. Such a bummer. They need to upgrade that TV box
Great video. Think I’m picking these up in Space Grey!
Fantastic review! Thank you. You use them exactly the way I intend to use mine (mostly office phone calls and background music) when they arrive, so this was EXTRA helpful. Cheers.
Glad it was helpful!
I would expect the next Apple TV to allow for spatial. You can get spatial when connecting iPad to TV with converter dongle
On the fence between the silvers and the space gray
grey for if you get sweaty and dirty a lot and silver if you dont get them dirty
Space Grey all the way.
Green!
I really like the headset but I wished it was more portable and not have that case, if it was that it would be an instant buy
This review is spot on! I love it. I watched it when it first came out but then decided to watch it again and still couldn't agree more with you lol
Listening to this video trough my blue AirPods Max.
Love this review 👏🏾
