I Tried The Complete Apple Ecosystem - Worth The Money?

  • Is the Apple Ecosystem Worth it? Which products can you buy "out of ecosystem" and when is it beneficial to buy more Apple stuff? I tested the entire ecosystem to find out.
Technology has changed and the products that a company makes don’t actually matter as much anymore. Like Apple could make overpriced headphones or a heavy VR headset and people would still buy them, and even rave about them. But did you ever wonder why that is? Sure, they are viewed as a premium brand and for the most part, I agree that Apple makes fantastic products, but there is a deeper answer. You see, you can no longer review one product individually without looking at the entire ecosystem. Companies like Apple have built extensive and tightly woven ecosystems of products to keep you buying their products and away from the competition. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. The features offer incredible interoperability that otherwise would not be possible. And I tested just about every Apple product on the market and every feature in their ecosystem. So is the Apple ecosystem actually worth it? And which products are best purchased within the ecosystem vs when it it better to buy, say, a different brand of earbuds or smart speakers

The way I view the "Apple Ecosystem" is the convenience of having one account iCloud connected to all your devices, syncing data. It's definitely a plus, but nothing mind-blowing. Like yeah, you don't have to enter your iPhone's hotspot password on your Mac, but on my PC, I entered my Galaxy's password once, and it is saved in my WiFi networks. It's a tiny convenience, not a feature.

By definition convenience is features tho. Technically you can personally code and create anything. You can code and modify the hardware to make phone calls or you can have phone calls as a “feature”.
There’s no single feature that isn’t just convenience, everything is possible with more steps if you really want to

My dream ecosystem would be a Cellular iPad + Apple Watch, a Mac Desktop computer and an Apple TV.

None of that “trapped” in the ecosystem or “it’s only marketing” nonsense. It’s baffling to hear buying products that are very capable and offer a superior performance than other devices described as a NEGATIVE. Have to say I stayed away from the Apple Ecosystem at first thinking it was just a gimmick, but once I had two Apple devices I started getting hooked on the Apple Ecosystem. Now the Android and Google world has an ecosystem, but because you start getting into multiple vendors it isn't as smooth experience as Apples. I'd say Apple's Ecosystem is their secret weapon for getting and keeping customers on Apple products.

I used to work with/for Apple once upon a time. originally I was on the Apple ecosystem in Japan and the UK and had to switch to Android plus Windows when I moved to the Philippines. I got used to the handoff between android and windows in general and had to move back onto the apple ecosystem (primarily for work), but you really do miss out on most of the soft features available in those primary markets, making it somewhat useless here, unless you’re using it for work.
I’d say if you’re living in a country which isn’t prioritized by Apple, it’s better to use Android + Windows, unless you absolutely have to use iOS or macOS for work purposes.
Where are Apple’s primary markets? Wherever they have official Apple stores (NOT their official resellers): the US and other Western countries, China, Singapore, India, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia, and the UAE.
If you’re anywhere else? Android and Windows for a non work ecosystem.

Not gonna lie, the issue I have with the whole 'is it worth it?' when it comes to Apple anything is the fact it costs about three or so times more to get a decent Apple product when an Android product that does the same thing (as an example, AirPods vs Galaxy Buds) is priced at a much, much lower price point. Any question of worth is immediately ruined for me when I have to pay so so much more for a product that has a lot of downsides.
Apple locks their products down like it's Fort Knox. You have to jailbreak your phone to do most things that can be done with an Android device out of the box (or by enabling Dev options).
Apple does not want you to leave their ecosystem at all - most Android devices do not care at all what you connect to them. I've used several different brands of headphones with my Android, and never had any issues at all. If you can read, you can connect two devices on Android.
I see you mentioned that Airpods let you share a Bluetooth connection. Only AirPods let you do that - on Android, the same can be done out of the box with a sufficiently new combo of headphones and Android device. (Assuming that if you pay the extra for AirPods Pro which are just AirPods minus the selling point of portability anyway, you have the income to buy recent enough smartphone and bluetooth headset.) (Also yes, I DID hear you talk about it as well, I just wanted to use it as a point for my argument here.)
Most advantages of the ecosystem boil down to things that A) are already a feature in Android devices, (some of them for generations before Apple thinks to add these things) or B) are completely pointless to add (removing the headphone jack caused most other manufacturers to do the same to keep up. I'm not going to write you another essay within this essay to explain why this is a bad thing).
Sure, things like unlocking your pc when you step up to it with your watch are cool and all, but when that PC breaks and you need replacement parts, you are locked into what Apple can provide and as such are paying a premium for the privilege of a name and an aesthetic. Apple products thrive on their reputation, and while I'm not saying they are bad - not at all! I've got an iPad myself, and it is a great device, but if it wasn't for one feature the iPad has (Apple Pencil) that they doggedly refuse to let others play with*, I'd have gotten an Android device as well.
(*Pointing this out since on Android, there have been collabs between WACOM and Samsung as well as pen manufacturers.)
Overall, Apple is not a bad product in a vacuum of 'does it perform very very well', but the price and the fact that if I get a product by Apple, I'm stuck begging them for help when there is an issue makes the whole argument die before it can even be asked at all for me. And yes, call me poor if you'd like, but I do not see the point of paying a premium for barely above standard hardware.
About your video though - I enjoyed your explanation and they way you spoke! It feels very human, like you are a real person who uses these products rather than just 'here are the specs, they wok', if that makes sense. Kind of the different between a sales person trying to sell me something or actually trying to offer me help to decide what item is best for me, ya know.

The way I view the ecosystem war between the Western Brands (Apple, Google & Samsung) is accessibility. (I say Samsung is western because it know by most of the western world and possibly protected by the western governments e.g US ban of Huawei as they were possibly surpassing Samsung in 2018/19, Also Samsung's new fit 3 is can and has been compared as a 1 for 1 copy of Huawei Watchfit line... all theories that people have)…
Apple is so far ahead in this department as many regions of the world don’t have either a single Pixel product or in Samsung case hasn’t really exported their laptops. This after many generations have gone by. Apple on the other hand can be found in most regions and surprisingly in some very small villages. Yes some can say Apple has a head start in terms of years, but pixel is on it’s 9th year and The galaxy overhaul is in its 4th year. There is no more excuses. This is why despite the ban Huawei has continued to be able to ship to these regions as they still offer a product (sometimes even better in build & experience)there.
In terms of the experience, there is a definite closing of the gaps between the big 3 brands and honestly will come down to style preference and UI preference

The Apple ecosystem's quality is undeniable. It's very good. That said, there are two crucial things that keep me from ever joining it: it's a closed ecosystem and it's an expensive ecosystem. It'd be nice to use less expensive third party tech with the Apple stuff but Apple actively discourages it. Green vs. Blue bubbles for example. As such, because I prefer Windows computers for gaming and Pixel phones for the cameras (and both for their lower price), I won't buy an Apple watch, for example, because it won't play nice with those two. Oh well... can't have everything.

While some 3rd party stuff will work, if you want all the Apple bells and whistles shown in this video, you're gonna have to pay for it.

The watch is “supported” but most of the APIs that would actually be useful for a smart watch to utilize are just not available to Wear OS watches, compared to the Apple Watch. You can’t even send iMessages on them. It’s a closed ecosystem because the core devices (phone, computer, tablet, watch, earbuds, TV box, location tags, etc) only really function fully when you’re buying from Apple, even if there are third party options.
