  • The Meta Quest Pro is a business-oriented virtual reality headset with face tracking and passthrough mixed reality, designed to kickstart Meta's Metaverse vision. But with clunky software and limited applications for its big new features, it doesn't capture the Quest 2's magic. #questpro #meta #vr

yeah with their minecraft-angle they totally miss what people would love about it. people who want multiple virtual monitors already said they love it (but meta doesnt put a focus on that).
or with their virtual meeting the get so fixated on mimic-tracking and cartoon characters instead of removing the characters and keeping the 3d space - so in a teams meeting when i make a presenation i could pull up all kind of resources and people could look at them in 3d at their own pace.

My biggest issues with this are the price, screen resolution, and marketing. First of all, the Quest 2 is only $400 and has a majority of the features of the Quest Pro, which is over $1k more. Second, why does the significantly cheaper Quest 2 have a higher res display? Finally, it’s obvious Workrooms VR is still in its infancy and the hardware just isn’t powerful enough to support higher quality graphics yet. They should have marketed this as a developer device to test and create new experiences and saved the rest for the Quest 3. I don’t think this will be ready for normal professional use for a few years, and even then, the hardware will need to be much lighter and smaller.

@@drmikehuntphd7905 The Quest Pro has at best the same resolution as a VR headset that could be bought on sale for $250 a year ago. The Pico 4 has a higher resolution and pancake lenses like the Quest Pro for $400.
The original rumors were that the Quest Pro was going to have 2160x2160 pixels per eye but they cut that as well as the depth sensor that was going to make the passthrough experience so much more stable and usable than it ended up being in the final product.
The Quest 3 will launch in 11 months with a much more powerful SOC, higher resolution displays, and replaceable head strap for likely $400. At that point the Quest Pro will look like an overpriced joke. This product is very confusing. Meta is acting like they have no competition in the VR space when Pico is aggressively targeting lower price points and Apple will be launching with a much more polished headset next year.

It's like she tried to make stuff work the worst possible and then made a montage of all the times it failed. Face tracking works extremely well and hand tracking works MUCH better than they make it out to be. They are probably using it in the dark or something. I do agree with her that there's work to do before they get to their final vision but it's obvious that it's a work in progress and it's expected. I think Zuck’s vision for the future of VR is correct, but the software and hardware needed to realize that vision is still at least 5-10 years away. Eventually the tech will get to the point where it is seemless, comfortable, and compelling. It just isn’t there yet. I think the wise strategy would be to continue to iterate on the software and hardware while making the needed improvements in the technology and let adoption take place naturally over time. Right now the killer app is in gaming, and if that were more robustly supported then the industry would grow faster in that dimension for now. Zuck is just overanxious and thinks the kind of wild success he had with Facebook can be duplicated if enough money is thrown at the problem.
In the business world simulation and design are still the best use cases for VR. The “holodeck” kind of experience needed to make VR the go to for communications and collaboration isn’t any where near what it needs to be for adoption in that sphere. I bought one of the meta quest pro headsets and returned it after only a few hours of use simply because it caused discomfort on my forehead. I’ve owned the Rift, Rift-S, Quest, Quest 2, HTC Vive, Valve Index, and the HP Reverb G2, and I’ve never had a headset that caused me the pain the Meta Quest Pro did. It makes me wonder how the headset managed to get through the development process. It seems like Meta just wanted to be the first through the gate and in the process allowed too many design flaws and shortcomings. It is too bad, because I’m one of the few actually rooting for Zuck. When this technology reaches its potential it really will be world changing. I just hope people don’t sour on all of VR because of this botched launch. Time will tell.

I'm pretty skeptical. The 5-10 year timeline has been repeated since Rift DK2. The most telling thing is that it has already been that long since Beat Saber and no one has even managed to make a better VR game. I like the direction the Quest Pro is going in. I did consider buying it for work and play, I'm a software developer and you can never have enough realestate (screens) but the hardware and software are playing a game of catchup with the user experience that will never win. The Quest 3 is likely to be a much more desirable business headset than the Quest Pro will ever be. Folks say it's a devkit and they are brutally correct. I'm not even sure the Quest Pro 2 + software will be 'ready', it may take a few more generations for this to be workable to anybody but the absolute hardcore creators and businesses in VR.

During the pandemic I had a Quest 1 and I played Rec Room almost every day. Whatever "the metaverse" is, Rec Room is doing it likely way better than whatever Facebook/Meta is doing right now. I played Rec Room's laser tag game while wearing a heavy backpack and that was my exercise, but the engine is quite versatile; there are so many different rooms and potential applications for what it's doing. It feels like Facebook/Meta is Michael Jordan trying to play baseball. It has done really well in one sport, but that success doesn't necessarily mean success in other areas.

It is *incredible* how much Zuckerberg wants this. He must have some *major* issues with human interactions to want this nightmare experience to replace it… seriously, who would want _any_ of this? I find it fascinating how his money and power has created a whole organization of people working on this platform, likely because they find the work interesting and not because they believe in it. He'll be able to keep them employed for years as they grow their skills and experience, but there's no doubt in my mind that nothing like Zuckerberg's vision will ever take off. May they someday use this knowledge to found companies and game studios to make things people actually want; in the meantime this will have to be their job.

People that really have major issues interacting with people don't do families, let alone huge companies. Most probably he's okay interacting with at least a circle of family and close friends. I think he's 100% sure he has enough leverage for making it happen (kinda making it a new television, or replacing video calls for job related collaboration - this kind of stuff) no matter how opposed the marked and our society can be, through money and influence. Like imagine (for the sake of a mental experiment) that a few major companies make Workrooms a de-facto internal standard for communications in such a way that you're forced to acquire a headset, and you happen to work at such a company. This won't be too different how Zoom or Google hangouts become popular. I bet he's thinking rather something like that.
