If they had the same training regimes and paths to Europe as today's youngsters they might be better than Mane/ Mahrez but honestly it's impossible to say.
As someone who has been fortunate enough to see Egypt's "golden generation" plays with the like of Abu treka. ahmed hassan, Mohamed barakat, zidane, amr zaki, el hadery (even gedou for that one AFCON) and having Egypt's greatest ever coach Hassan Shehata, I have to say, Salah's accomplishment of dragging this Egyptian team to the WC shows his true greatness. I understand what Shaun is saying, I agree you should have a bit more of a personal love for the player if they’re in your top 5. However, Weah was too good to not have inside top 3
I respect Shauns opinion on George Weah. In 20 years people will be putting Michael Owen in their top ten Premier League strikers simply cause he won a Ballon d'Or, PFA, League title and Pele clout without having watched him at all
Completely agree with Shaun on this. I’m not going to argue people who say Pele/Maradona/Cruyff are the best ever but I just can’t justify saying that when I never saw them play. I think to give your own personal top 10 you have to of watched them play as there’s something about watching them for 90 minutes week in, week out that you can’t respect or understand about watching a highlight video, but you can’t disrespect anyone who puts other names up that you haven’t seen. Some of them not even knowing who some of the clubs they played for is dreadful tho 😂
You say that, but most players don't get watched for 90 minutes week in week out even now when we have so much more access to football. Most people see highlight reels of players and then read stats. Why you can't do that with someone from before you are born I can't understand.

Shawn's arguments are mad cap I didn't watch George weah play back in the day but bro, he was a beast 💪💪
To be fair they should just do best players since 2000 since there is some merit to the argument that it's impossible to properly judge old players based on reels/ stats/ legends. It's very difficult to compare across generations.

It's sad how the African players are mainly ranked on their European success...I understand why, but it's still high key sad😥. The likes of Okocha, Lucas Radebe, Abotretrika etc are icons in our continent but will always be underrated based on European success
Benni McCarthy
But that's also because Football in Europe is the highest level. It's like being a successful basketball player in Europe but not playing in the NBA. People are less likely to consider you one of the best of all time.

Senegal barely beat Zimbabwe. Algeria couldn't even beat Sierra Leone. Afcon is literally 1000 times harder than the world cup. World cup is D-league compared to Afcon. Which makes Aboutrika's record even way more impressive. So what if he never made world cup. African qualifier rules are rigged anyway for no one to make it consistently & let alone win it EVER

1:00:10 Abutrika never put Egypt in the world cup. Mo Salah did in more than 30 years (the famous pen). Mo Salah was a runner-up AFCON in 2017. Mo Salah also won the Swiss league twice. He won European Super Cup and club world cup. Not to forget, Salah has a PL record for most goals scored in a single season in 2017/18. He is won the golden boot twice in England, and lost it to Kane last season with 1 goal difference. He is probable wining the golden boot this season.

Not easy making an all-time list, a lot of factors you would have to account for. However, Weah is too low, top 2 easily. Abedi Pele I would have higher as well, at least over Essien. Essien just had too many injuries and had a short peak.

As an african who's watched afcon all my life, Abedi pele is definitely top 8 of all time. His name is still praised on the streets till this day. Also, MANE OF ALL TIME!? I know its your list but talking about african footballers, bring 100 people living in africa watching all these greats, Sadio mane will not be thought of. I used to support shaun on this pod then man put MAHREZ THIRD! He's bugging. Samuel eto'o, George weah, Didier drogba, El hadary, Roger milla, ABEDI PELE, Kanu Nwankwo, Aboutrika, Wael Gomma, Okocha, Rashidi Yekini and Hossam Hassan. Every name here deserves to be called more than some players mentioned. And what's thata bout not watching them. Did you watch Pele or Maradona or Cruyff? You watch highlights only. I compile Depay's best highlights and he can look like a god. Knowing thousands who watched them, Liban is right. dId everyone watch George Weah? Come on guys! Still love the pod!
What do you think of rabah madjer
Those guys have a bigger legacy in African football, but they aren’t better players than Mane or Mahrez.
Mane will definitely be thought of lol, he won liverpool their first champions league in 14 years and first league title in 31 years and hes got a premier league golden boot and african poty, he was liverpools best attacker in 16/17, 18/19 and 19/20, he may not have won what the other have won in Africa but he was at a point *the best* left winger in the world, you cant say the same for aboutrika or some of the other names on your list
@@Sahota2002 Different eras and about 20-25 years ago most big clubs started scouting academies in Africa much more actively or setting up their own. So players like Abedi Pele, Weah, Milla or even Kanu are arguably even more impressive to have broken through despite no established route to do so and been very impressive in European football. If they had the same training regimes and paths to Europe as today's youngsters they might be better than Mane/ Mahrez but honestly it's impossible to say.
@@affectiveteam6229 good points and I agree with you. But when comparing players across eras, I tend to give the edge to modern players.
Shaun talks about Yayas individual awards, yet doesn’t give a sh*t that Weah is the only African player to win a Ballon Dor
The difference in quality and cohesion between the team that won 3 AFCONs in a row and the one which qualified for the world cup is ridiculous. That golden generation was filled with talent that could have accomplished so much more in Europe if they had decided to play there, however, Egypt's socio-political climate at the time was far different before the first revolution and there was probably no need or desire to leave the country.
Shout out to anyone in the comments who said, Ahmed Hassan. You know Ball!

@@garymaidman625 which is why i respect amenyah on total 90 podcast. He won’t even comment on players today if he doesn’t watch them fully like that.
