EPISODE 179
In this episode we start turning on systems in the boat - starting with the diesel-heating system. We also turn on the fridge and freezer, and the galley lighting! Nic fits handles and locks in the doors, Patty cuts another hole in the deck, and Leo fits a large monitor in the Nav station.

His name is Leo. He is a boat builder and a sailor. And we love him.
Not the introoo
How do you know his name and his proffessions?
Very Cool. Says it all.
All that beautiful craftsmanship throughout the boat and then they use strip connectors in a corrosive environment? 11:44
I have my doubts about whether these 'electrical' guys are qualified electricians.
Love all the Tally Ho crew .. they are all incredible people ⛵️⛵️⛵️🩵🍀👍🫶
Leo, cheap fuel fill tip: soak the wood decking around the deck fill completely with water before you start fueling. The water is heavier than diesel and it fills the pores completely before fuel splatters might be landing. The diesel floats and is wiped up easily without residue discoloration of your wood deck.
This works on powerboats too.
Dang, I used to know this trick too! Thanks for the reminder.
This is a very good tip. One of the oldest in the book.
good tip indeed, my favorite method is to get a 12 V fuel pump by an auto wrecker and then with some hoses and a switch you can fill in a very controlled way.... looks good , love your channel... all the systems look SO good.... what a journey it's been... thanks
@@ningpo6924 Only downside is handling the hoses when you've done. Even with a tall bucket and good gloves, you _always_ end up getting splattered as the hoses flip and flop about. I have the dermatitis to prove it!
That and the shake style self priming syphon hose. Easy to use even when rolling and stores flatter than a funnel.
Keep the freezer in the counter that way the cold is gonna stay down when you open it from the top. Keep the drawer as a fridge… you gonna loose some cold but in the end it will have to work less than to be a freezer 👍🏻✌🏻🇨🇦
Plus as Patty said he'll need the fridge more often (say for milk to make tea) so it makes sense to not have to clear the counter just to access the fridge. Makes sense to have the fridge be pullout.
Question is which one do you use most. As a freezer the counter top can be used more. Paddy might be right, but ultimately, what you cook will dictate daily operations!
This is my main argument for making the counter one the freezer. However most of the thermal mass in a freezer or fridge is in the contents, not the air.
A freezer or fridge full of stuff will take significantly longer to cool down or warm up. The relatively small mass of air in a freezer isn't as big of a deal. Especially if you aren't constantly opening it. Actually from that point of view, the cold box being opened more often should be the one that better contains the air.
But either way, the difference in efficiencies we're talking about here are pretty small. Tally Ho certainly isn't lacking for power availability, so I think whatever is more convenient for the crew is the right call.
For further viewing, Technology Connections has a video that gives a lot of insight into fridge/freezer design: th-cam.com/video/8PTjPzw9VhY/w-d-xo.html.
Could put walls around the sides of the drawer for the lower fridge/freezer to help keep the cold in.
Fridge access from galley counter has more space for day to day items and keep the cooler on the open and close. Freezer on the pull out used less often and as such not a big deal for short term cold loss.
First few seconds had me bamboozled but then i realized it was Leo, and that he is a boatbuilder and a sailor and bought this 101 year old wooden sailing boat for the price of $1.
yeah, that intro through me off!
If we saw the condition of the boat that he bought for $1US you could understand when I say that it was overpriced. Sadly, about 99% of the original timber was little more than firewood.
However, it looks like Leo has learned his craft well & I am impressed that he went all the way to the deep south to buy Live Oak simply because it was the best timber for the job at hand.
But seriously Leo, $1? Couldn't you haggle?
It's fun to see Leo so enthusiastic on camera.
He sees the launch approaching
Exactly what I wanted to comment.
Noticed the same thing, it's nice to see him on camera a little more.
Same here, a happy Man with pure emotion in that smile.
yes he don`t smile much.
When I saw the first few episodes of this restoration I thought well that shouldn't be too difficult, just replace all the rotten timber and get those sails up.
Now as the finish is in sight, boy oh boy what a project this has been, every single piece of timber(apart from the transom) has been replaced even the lead keel has been recast.
The mind bogles at the shear amount of detail gone into the fitout, beautiful cabinetry and varnished timber everywhere, a complex power system, there must be five miles of wiring
in this vessel. All thru it all Leo your enthusiasm and can do approach have propelled the build along, of course there have been many skilled workers assisting and all seem to share
your wonderful attitude. Fair winds and happy sailing.
That galley is absolutely beautiful. What unbelievable craftsmanship.
I LOVE those ceiling lights and the under cabinet lighting is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Looks like a million dollars

@@johnpandolfino8663 And she only cost 999,999 USD! 🙂
Leo , when you turned On the undercabinet lighting the varnished wood in the galley may have been the most beautiful things my eyes have ever seen . Stunning simply stunning .
I'm not sure exactly why, but this video was especially fun. Maybe because it feels more off-the-cuff? Love the boat, love the crew, love the videos.
What I found fun was watching the systems coming online for the first time, almost as though the boat is coming to life.
this episode felt like christmas. after years of woodwork, now it comes to the toys!
I think what we are seeing is the relief and excitement everyone is feeling knowing that the project is almost finished.
Leo previously hinted that they are aiming to do sea trials this spring.
It's because leo is visibly excited in this one haha
will there be cooker hood/extraction in galley?
You can tell, by the number of views already, just how eager everyone is to see the new video.
There is no compromise ANYWHERE on this boat. The deck is so well crafted that it almost looks artificial. I've never seen a project done to this level of perfection. Be proud!
One thing to take into consideration for the fridge/freezer situation, is that a box-freezer with top-opening is much more efficient because the cold air can not fall out of it, so using them for freezer is probably much more efficient.
I don't think I have seen you quite so thrilled and excited in any episode before, Leo. It's almost as if the boat is coming to life.
That's a very good point and well spotted !
He is happier than I have ever seen him before too, this must mean he pressure is now off and he can find time to relax for a change !
When I think back to some of the problems he had to deal with over the years and how he sometimes looked as though he might be regretting starting the project, he has faced many serious challenges but now they are all behind him !
I have been watching you from the very first video, wow ! It’s been a journey, but what I have to say is I never seen such beautiful workmanship on wood , from the butterfly, hatches handrails and that beautiful furniture and woodwork on the interior, this boat I think will be seen by many people throughout time in magazines, special videos and the sailing world. This boat will be a beautiful home for Leo and a true example of perfection in wood boats !
Leo's craftmanship is indeed other worldly. At times I have wondered if he is actually human. A few episodes ago when after drilling bolt holes he drove the bolts in with the back of the drill. With that act, Leo confirmed his humanity.
I was horrified seeing the drill come up through the deck with not a hint of safety or that others were (I hope) warned about it. @@timloveless5409
My hubby and i did to. I haven't stayed in touch since he passed. .it is so beautiful
@@edithcsizmar1450I'm sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace!
I was listening... when Leo said that monitor mounted on the bulkhead would enable him to continue making videos. That was music to my ears. I know I'm not the only person who wants this adventure to continue as Tally Ho launches and begins its journey around the world. What a stunning boat this is... all the product of Leo's vision, the talents of so many people, and the many folks who contribute to this effort. Beautiful!
Me too, I absolutely agree!
It will be interesting when this channel transitions from a "build" to a "travel" theme. Apparently its a TH-cam requirement to have someone who looks better in a bikini than Patrick or Leo.
Well said.
@@obsidianjane4413Have you actually seen Patrick or Leo in a bikini or are just supposing with your imagination
We need a Patrick in a bikini thumbnail. 😅 On a serious note, it will be a sad sad when the boat is finished and we transition from the building team to the sailing team. Patrick better hope that bikini fits so he makes the cut.
Fridge in the pullout, freezer in the countertop. More energy efficient and more likely to need unobstructed access to the fridge instead of the freezer.
When the horizontally sliding fridge/freezer is pulled out, all the cold spills away. Inconvenient if that's the fridge, but a significant power drain if that's the freezer. But opening the top and reaching down is a perfect design for a freezer.
No, "all the cold" doesn't spill away. The cold in a fridge or a freezer is mainly in the contents (high thermal mass), and not in the air (low thermal mass). Losing some cold air is a pity, but it's relatively trivial.
Just add some walls to the drawer to help keep the cold in when it's opened, and also line with aluminium foil and foam insulation.
While I agree the thermal mass is more in the contents than the air, the air isn't trivial insofar as replacing all the cold dry air with warm, relatively humid air every time you access seems more likely to lead to potential frost issues over time, this is all hypothetical so would need to see how the system actually performed in this aspect...
@@HunterJE That's all true. I was responding to the claim that "all the cold was lost". It isn't, as we agree. Ideally, you wouldn't want to be replacing the air volume every time the unit was accessed.....but even if you did, that wouldn't mean having to replace all the cold.
@@HunterJE Yes, the entire volume of air will be dumped each time it's opened and replaced with warm humid air which will just condense drop out as frost which will consume energy and quickly build up.
Chest freezer is the way to go.
This boat is looking absolutely amazing, way to go everyone involved. Incredible work!
The first video of capstan pour dropped the other day.
Windy Hill Foundry
Amazing finishing work . Coming together nicely. Well done Leo and crew ..
When you do lauch please try to invite as many people who worked on Tally Ho as possible. So much hard work and love from so many people have gone into her and it would be good to recognise that.
We are old power boater (since 1967) with a little sailing experience The First Mate says that because you can/will use the top of the frig as work space the freezer should be there where you will not need access as much.
Agree whole heartedly. The "Fridge" is always open/shut in cooking. The "Freezer" is open to "to get things out" then shut till the next meal. After all, fridge stuff like a cup of milk or teaspoon of this or that, it's always easier. IMHO Love the videos.
Also, the drawer-style unit is going to let most of the cold air out each time you open it. You don't want that for a freezer. Best to have a top-loading freezer to save energy.
@@sthompson3 I was going to say its much, much more efficient to have a "chest" style freezer.
It's nice to see Leo getting excited and genuinely happy, rather than perpetually stressed.
I dont know when I have seen Leo so happy/excited/pleased with the way it is coming together. A person buys all that high powered equipment and you are told how it should perform but there is nothing like the thrill of actually seeing it working.
22:34 wow when that underlight lit the spot up, it just looks dang beautiful! Nothing less to call it a work of art.
From the Steve Cross sawmill to a refrigerator and charts light. Quite a Journey! 👍
That Steve Cross episode was probably the best one of all. Especially when he was reading the poem about Live Oak.
What a great episode that was. I hope some of these characters make it for launch day.
By far my favorite channel on any streaming service. The people and camaradity with everyone who has built this boat is something that is truly joyous. Been watching for 4 years and miss some of the old craftsman and women who have come and gone. Would love to see them when this unbelievable boat makes its first sail.
The crew of builders and their camaraderie are impressive. I'm less than impressed with the fat chick and the weirdo who paints his fingernails black, but at least Tally Ho doesn't have a DEI coordinator like Arabella did.
Proof it takes a village
Countertop freezer makes more sense, as you open from top and lose less coldness. Fridge can be the pull out
Using the counter top for a freezer has benefits. The cold air stays in versus all the cold air flowing out from a front door unit. Just my experience. Saves energy.
Also it allows for quick Access to the Beer in the fridge without Standing up
Right. But under this logic, if using the fridge regularly, wouldn't it make the most sense to have that in the counter top? That way there is less energy loss for the appliance they use the most. If they open the freezer sparingly, the energy loss wouldn't be as big of a deal.
rarely I saw Leo soooo happy and relaxed showing the new achievements 🙂👋 👍
Cool to see so much of Leo on this one. I also like the freestyle nature of this video.
Fascinating stuff. I knew there'd be lots of complicated stuff inside the boat, but didn't realise it would be this much! And doors that close flush and firm and make that wonderful 'click' is just about the most satisfying thing in the universe!
What a transformation from the disaster you started off with. I think Albert Strange would be very pleased with what you've done with his creation. Functional and beautiful at the same time, retaining the "old " ways while incorporating modern technology. I get wanting to retain the historical way of sailing, but even Strange was forward-thinking when he added the parafin engine to the design. That's what he had to work with at the time. I don't think he would begrudge you for bringing the old girl into the 21st Century. I have watched this since you started and have been absolutely blown away at the heart and the craftsmanship that has gone into bringing the Tally Ho back to life. So glad you saved her from destruction. Can't wait to see her launched, finished, and under sail. Great work!
Could you imagine if you could travel back in time, what the reaction would be if the original builders of Tally HO could see this video? How things have changed.
I have a feeling that they are watching... I heard laughing up there during the topside "screen door episode". The parrot (inspector green) goes with the boat. Lord knows he chewed on enough of it. Thank you Leo, you inriched our lives
Wow! Everything looks so beautiful and amazing!!
theres a certain charm to this more raw video, just goes to show how excited you guys are about this update. much love to all of you
Boy, look at those beautiful knees shine behind the woodwork! What a piece of art she is!! And the lighting is absolutely perfect for that space! The whole crew has to be struggling not to want to sit and admire it all the time. 😁😁😁
My Goodness Leo - what a transformation - I look back to No 1 video, when 'Tally Ho' was a rotting shell, and like all your intrepid followers, stand amazed at the work you and your fantastic team have done. Questions:
Stove? Gimbles?
How about provisions for straps to secure the cook when hard on the wind in a good breeze.
Also, Acorn found that the WB stove was less than optimal as the diesel system worked so well that the WB stove was not necessary (i.e., more storage), and they are in the NE with snow and ice.
Thanks again for your wonderful skills in editing and mixing and blending of the content and the music.
Side note, Many years ago (a long, long, Longgg time ago) there used to be entertainers that would spin table plates in tall sticks. The would progress by adding plates to an array of sticks. The objective was to keep the plates spinning without letting them fall.
Seriously now, I don’t know how you keep all the plates spinning on this project.
I guess it’s like the Beatles song, “A Little Help From My Friends” .
Again, well done!
Cheers.
The problem with watching these videos is that more and more the interior of Tally Ho is making my house look shabby and poorly equipped in comparison . . .
Fridge down freezer up.
Fridge is more accessibel when the freezer is covered with stuff.

The workmanship on this boat is just outstanding 👍 Absolutely perfect 👌. And the way it’s all been documented and videoed throughout the whole process is just incredible 👏. 😊. Thank you everybody and I mean everybody.
Suggestion: Stick a little magnet somewhere to hold a steel pin so in case of an emergency, you know where there is a pin.
That's exactly what I said to myself!
Very good idea! In an emergency it's easier to remember the location of the preplaced item than frantically looking around.
Very Well idea but Prefer the "scratch ribon " for this pin because "magnet" on board may disturb the master compas. Life experience at sea on a small friend sail boat.!!!!!

That RED color is an indicator for high Sulphur content diesel fuel. If Loe's engine requires low Sulphur fuel, then he would need the blue/green fuel. Red fuel is ONLY allowed off road .
@@karlzipp3706 I doubt they are going to be driving Tally Ho on public roads very much.
I suspect that Leo selected Diesel powered devices that are tolerant of different grades of fuel. He plans to travel a lot and the quality and grade of fuel he will have access to will vary a lot.
@@karlzipp3706it’s all ultra low sulfur now, the red fuel is the same stuff just with a red dye added so law enforcement can easily identify that it’s “off-road only” meaning no road taxes were paid on it.
@@karlzipp3706Here in the US red diesel means no road tax and is basically fuel oil or kerosene. Road use diesel has additives that prevent gelling in cold weather and has a green tint. Diesel motors will run on many types of fuel including jet fuel#2 and mineral spirits or paint thinner.
You are one of my best investments. That unsure kid who put down $1 for a project he had no idea would work, has become a high-end yacht builder. And I got to come along for the ride! Thanks Leo.
Do you remember that feeling, when you where a child and you where wainting for the next episode of mighty max or dragon ball or the knights of the zodiac….25+ years later, same felling waiting for Tally Ho’s new episode.

I can tell Leo is stoked. You deserve it man.
Fridge in the counter well space so you reduce air spill...doh!
On the fridge , freezer argument I agree with Patrick!!!. The freezer is multifunctional, useful for vegetables, meat, ice cream and much more suitable to the cooking area, the fridge can only be used for beer, possibly cider (he is from the south west) and much moor suitable for the drinking area 👍
Don’t forget, Fire Extinguisher access, and proper training . Great looking vessel ! Impeccable craftsmanship ! Well thought out engineering ! May you have fair winds and following seas. ..

It's Alive......... So exciting to have another system up and running. Amazing the complexity of all the systems that for the most part go unseen. 110 years ago they would have thought this was a space boat. GJ and another awesome video

I could have velcroed it, but you guys have inspired me to make a form fitted box that will hold it.
U have made me up my game 😊.
Thanks Leo
That means a lot mate.
I'm with Leo on the frig/freezer debate. Opening a drawer when heeled over can be a pain, plus a frig is opened many more times than a freezer, so a frig drawer would waste energy as it will spill the cold much more when opened than a top lid.
Also, glad to see the rounded faceplate on the head door latch assembly, being fitted into the square cut mortise, was just for fitting purposes and ended up getting a square faceplate. Details. Details.
Leo, you have done an incredibly good job in attracting really quality people for this project! The workmanship is perfect!
massive, massive WOW! I immediately saw the planking, sanding, fayring crew at work, just as Leo turned on the galley lights ✌️ Remembering those episodes, from Sequim. Bless the Tally Ho crew!
Great work guys!
Leo ist realy in a very good mood. Nice to see him laugh so much.
Seeing Leo so excited was like a throwback to when the project first started! I totally understand how that cycle goes, and it’s awesome to see how close she is to getting wet!
19:10 Current aesthetics would favor the stainless steel front. The deep box on the counter will hold the cold (cold air drops) better and if accessed with the least disturbance the return to a freezing temperature would be quicker. The box in the bench operating as a refrigerator, temperature (35-50°F / 2-10°C), would need to run a shorter time to get back to that temperature. Though depending on the reach, crossing the Pacific, they both may need to be employed as freezers.
Sooo cosy and nice to see the team sitting around the wood burner with tea/coffee mugs in their hands...
I remember when this was just a skeleton of a boat.
I remember when I thought this young man has bitten off more than he can chew.
???????In the galley which looks show room spectacular, over Leo's head we noticed largish looking power source wires. Will those remain as is or be covered and less conspicuous? Everything is coming WOW!!!
I vote to have the frig be the pullout drawer, which will end up being much more convenient than lifting up the counter-top panels to access the food.
Sit on the bench and pull out a cold beer, eh?
Having to move things around while prepping food, just to grab a minor item from the fridge would be a pain. Be that as it may, you'll need to label the tops of the items down at floor level or you'll be for ever grabbing the wrong things.
Also in a fridge you're much more likely to need any given item at any given time, which that the pull out drawer with side-access facilitates, while in a chest-loading deep freeze you can put stuff you expect not to need any time soon at the bottom and stuff you might need to access sooner/more regularly on top of it...
Definitely some old school Portuguese, Spanish tiles or Holland white and ultramarin tiles. 😉👌
The boat is getting ready and I'm already starting to watch the videos with a certain nostalgia. Well, we're nearing the end of the series. Bring on the Series: "The Adventures of Tally Ho."
Tally Ho makes a half million dollar fiberglass yacht look like an old canoe
Better to have the freezer in the countertop because every time you open the drawer on the floor level the cold will escape. Top loading freezers keep the cold in because the cold stays in the unit.. (cold air stays on the bottom/sinks) it’s actually how a professional kitchen is set up in a restaurant.. way more efficient with the energy
Keep the drawer as a freezer: opening it while heeled over is a pain and possibly dangerous, so top-loading should be used for things you want to access while underway.
I'm so glad I found your channel a few month ago and started to watch all the episodes, literally just caught up two days ago. Anyways keep up the good work cant wait for Tally Ho to go out to sea.
Blessings!
Have the slide-out be the fridge and the top-down be the freezer. Also Id leave the metal surface exposed since it contrasts nicely with the wood.
Also, you don't want to let cold air out of the cold box The freezer won't have to work as hard to cool things down again after being opened if it's a chest freezer rather than a drawer.
Plus you're much less likely to have something spill or leak in a freezer (most things being solid at least within a short time after being put in there), which is DEFINITELY a thing that happens with top loading fridges no matter how careful you think you're being ask me how I know. Not fun having to pull everything in your fridge out to clean up that mess...
Chest freezers are vastly more efficient than vertical ones; because the cold air is disturbed less by top access than by a door or drawer (which let it all flow out when opened).
Depending on how frequently the fridge is used compared to the freezer, condensation may also be a factor to consider as that cold air flows out of the drawer and draws fresh water onto timbers.
My assumption is that (generally speaking) the fridge will be accessed less frequently aboard than ashore, as supplies like fresh milk for tea will be limited.
Adding to this, I think the counter unit has more capacity and I'd imagine youll want to keep more stuff frozen over a long voyage
Agreed... from the vast amount of knowledge I have from watching less than a handful of videos on TH-cam about chest freezers (hey, Alec), it seems to make more sense for the side-opener to be a refrigerator and the top-opener to be a freezer.
I get why it feels the other way -- Leo's "freezer" is more stowed-away kneeling-down under stuff than the instant-access standing-up counter -- but the counter-argument makes sense: when you need to get something out of the fridge, like butter, condiments, beer, you'll probably have ingredients being prepped on the counter already.
I cant tell you how much that final scene where you show the finished galley warms my heart. I have been watching from the beginning.

Wait! What? Was this a comment on Patrick? One of the verses in this song is:
Fireman Paddy worked wi' me,
on the engines stiff and cauld,

I'd have a graphic printed of Patrick's Windo-3000 to cover the fridge drawer. Everyone who ever uses it will ask...
For the wood burner, please consider soap stone tile- they are a natural heat sink and would look very nice with the wood interior- some soapstone is grey, but you can also find a matte white
Agree. I was about to suggest the same. Soap stone will be the perfect tile-material for this purpose.
That heater, makes condensation. Consider omitting it.
You can get green.
It would be a nice contrast to the warm wood tones of the interior

@@jimurrata6785 I do. I live in a houseboat. In the beginning I use a woodstove. That caused problems. central heating solved the problem :-)
That diesel is red because it has a dye in it to distinguish it from regular diesel. It is made for off-road vehicles and does not have the taxes applied to it that regular diesel has. It also has a higher sulfur content and doesn't burn as cleanly. It is usually used for construction equipment and off-road toy vehicles. It will stain internal lines and filters, though. I don't know if Leo knows that.
