Hey, from snowy Ohio! I am glad you took on the challenge, or I would never have found you! Love watching a super young version of me,fixing a budget and finding a way to squeeze by… So proud of you! If I was you I’d give myself a break and buy essentials… This is your first time with this challenge, there’s a learning curve! Take care of your beautiful self! And yes, it is the best to have a man that gets you and wants to share everything with you. I lost my first husband after 40 years… thought I’d be alone, because no other man would be like him… After 5 yrs alone, I found another man… that is a dream… Bruce 😇must’ve sent him to me. I am totally blessed!! Thank you for your ideas and honesty.

Isn't this what the pantry challenge is about. To find out where your pantry is lacking and what you don't have to stock so much of.

I love your honesty and vulnerability! Every time I do a pantry challenge I do it differently and I learn new things. That’s the great thing about it. Sometimes I learn to be creative, sometimes I learn what I truly need vs what’s convenient or easy, sometimes I learn what I don’t want to buy or stock again, etc. Pantry challenges are very personal, so I think we all need to remember that our pantry and life and needs and wants are not going to be the same as others. Your pantry your rules! And you get to grade yourself! Win win!

I've been doing this challenge for years, the point of the challenge is finding out where your gaps are or where you are overspending on food. Each year or each time you do this your gaps become less along with overspending.
This is your pantry, your home, your rules and that's one of the things I love about doing this challenge.. MY HOUSE MY RULES..
One thing that helped me many many years ago was creating the basic pantry, now as I've gotten older, have more space and even money I'm able to have 2 years' worth of a basic pantry but maybe you can only do 6 months which is just fine.
Sugar/sweetener = Shouldn't be just regular sugar, I have honey, molasses, raw sugar and lifetimes supply of applesauce. I rotate the first 3 at all times so then I'm not just using raw/regular sugar always it also allows my family to get their taste buds adjusted to honey and molasses
Salt = Any kind will do but I'm a stick with 1 type and buy it in bulk, a 50lb bag of kosher salt fits into 9 1/2-gallon mason jars and doesn't go hard in your basement, cellar etc
Pepper = Again any kind will do but I stick with coarse ground pepper in a 5lbs container, it lasts me a whole year
Milk = Again like sugar shouldn't just be your everyday gallon of milk, consider buying dry milk and slowly swapping it out with regular milk. This way if during a pantry challenge you run out of regular milk your family and you won't go into shock by the taste of dry milk. Also makes the best HOT COCOA
Canned goods (home grown or store bought) = In 2008 we went through the recession, and I almost lost everything I had, I had to live off rice/beans for close to 6 months because I couldn't afford anything else. Once I was able to get my head above water, I started to slowly build up my canned goods which can last 3 or more years regardless of what the can states (my mom is a food scientist)
Flour = I buy flour in bulk and I grind my own as well, at Krogers you can get a 25lb bag of white flour for $15.00
Potatoes = Sweet potatoes will last longer regardless of where they are stored, regular potatoes you can pre-cook them and then freeze um up..
DON'T BUY IN BULK UNTIL YOU HAVE TRIED IT OUT... Hard lesson I had to learn
    - I thought I would love Meyer's gel hand soap and bought 10 cases of it.. I was so wrong, biggest spending mistake I have ever made. If you are looking to try something different buy it few times and then go for the bulk buy, this goes for food, cleaning supplies, heck even toilet paper
THE FIFO RULE (First in First Out)
    - This rule has saved me so many times, less waste, less spending, less everything..
Keep track of what you make for your family and have them grade the meals, it might sound silly but I have a planner where all my meals for the week are kept and after each meal I ask them "what are your thoughts on this meal" It's 1-5 start rating with 5 stars being AWESOME!! Now if I get lower than 3 stars, I try the meal out 1 more time later down the road and if it is still less than 3 I won't make it again. Keeping track of the meals I make helps me know what to make in the future BUT also helps me know what to stock up on
I just found your channel, your recipes looked great.. Keep plugging along and pretty soon you will have it down

These are such great tips, thanks for sharing them!! This is super helpful for me as I figure out how to best restock my pantry after the challenge. Tempted to get bulk but you’re right - I would hate to have a lot of something I end up not liking. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and share what works well for you, I so appreciate it! 😊

I agree with you. I have not done the pantry challenge because it would cost me a fortune to replace everything I’ve run out of. I told my husband I would end up spending his entire paycheck to replace what I was out of. Which doesn’t save any money. The money is just spent at a later date. Jessica is one of the few people I think it actually benefits bc she is using all of her canned goods in order to make room for the next season. She stays stocked up for 3 months regularly on staples like flour and sugar so she isn’t out any extra money at the end of the challenge. I’ve seen people spend 2 months worth of groceries in order to prep for the challenge which in my opinion defeats the purpose. I think if you concentrate on using hat you have over stock of or things you have you don’t normally use and is just sitting there, but don’t run yourself out of stuff, you can be successful in the challenge. What I like about Jessica is that she says do what works for you. There is no hard set rules. Don’t run yourself out of things. You’ll just end up spending more in the end.

You are doing amazing! give yourself some grace. Make a list of staples that you use most. Sugar, salt, flour, yeast, oil, coffee etc. keep those things stocked at all times. You can make a ton of things with them.. I feel the point of pantry challenge for me is to be aware of what I have and what is going to expire and what am I buying in the store. I dont go unless I need one of the staples. I was the same with bread recipes until I bought a big bag of yeast. I keep in fridge. It is better and cheaper than the packets. I say go to store for some yeast, sugar and flour! Make tortillas, bread, flat breads, pizza etc. have fun!

Hello there! My take on the challenge is not so much about not going to the store but more about taking an inventory and making an intentional effort to use things that I have forgotten or neglected. I was shocked how much food I had when I actually took inventory. Do what works best for you! Enjoying the creative ideas.

Do like Jessica Wanders and show us items you want to use up and viewers will give you ideas on what you can cook with those ingredients. I think you will find her very beneficial. She makes lots of substitutions especially using jams and jellies like sugar/honey substitutes.
Yes; go to the grocery to buy sugar and fresh produce. You can still try using jam for sugar but have the sugar to fall back on. The main idea is to use up things that have been in the pantry and freezers for a while to cycle through your food. This will also show you what you may want to keep in the pantry that you don't have or maybe you should keep more of on hand if you can't get to the store for a month etc. Most of all have fun being creative and learning!

I hear people frequently say they "got rid of" an item, like it was an undesirable. You" used up" an item - a precious bit of food.
Just a feeling from an old woman who ate "mayo sandwiches" frequently as a kid(Mircle Whip actually) because there was no bologna left. We were glad there was bread left to eat while Mom was at work and we were left to feed ourselves.
Loved your questions. Buy your sugar and other staples as needed. Cook from scratch like you are doing. Good work and good hubby too.

You do what you feel is right. I'm doing the challenge as well but I am keeping my basic staples well stocked. I'm not buying extras. If I see a good sale on something, I'm getting that too. I'm making sure to use up stuff that I've had the longest or items I have a lot of. Trying to make snacks, treats & breads from scratch. Know that there is no wrong. If you save $20 a week and still have things well stocked, that's a winner. Go girl!!!

Getting water is essential, that is not against you on a pantry challenge, life essentials, are jut that essential. Go get water when you need it. Congratulations on not going to the grocery store last week. Try any substitutions, definitely, it's always worth a try. Consider this pantry challenge as a way to learn what you will want to keep in your future pantry. This is a great learning opportunity for you. Rotating through your pantry is always good. Good man, for him recording meals for you(I married a man like that too), being there for his wife is essential.

January and February are months where many things go on sale. I try for one week of grocery budget for the month. The idea of the challenge is to use the oldest of what you have already stocked and not just let it get older because you keep buying new things. When I go I buy perishables like salad items and fresh milk. Then if something is on a good sale, I will pick that up to become new items in our stockpile. So far I have purchased milk, salad mix, some paper products on sale and a marked down spiral ham after the holidays (from 3.99 to 1.49). It’s the middle of the month so I have budget left to look for bargains later. So glad to see how you are learning from the challenge.

That is the beauty of this challenge. You can make your own rules. If you want or need to go to the store fine. If you don’t than that is fine.
We are doing a year without a grocery store; so to do that you have to have a really well stocked pantry/pantries. I started this journey with this challenge in January 2023 so I thought it would be good to finish with it. So that will be 14 month’s without a grocery store.
On March 1 I will be definitely starting the restocking of my pantries. I wouldn’t be spending a year’s worth of grocery money at one time. As I see deal’s I will be restocking.
Hope you have a great time on the challenge. Don’t stress it too much. It’s just meant to get you using your pantry item’s and cooking from starch.

For myself, I will be grocery shopping for staples like bread, dairy, eggs and fresh produce. The main goal for me is to use up what I have in my freezers and pantry. Usually when I grocery shop I’ll pick up items to stock my shelves/sale items and I’m not doing it until I’m done with the challenge. I normally budget an extra 25 bucks or so every other shopping trip to restock shelves and fill my freezer throughout the year and spend the winter eating from the freezer. One thing I’m doing different this year is I’m keeping track of what I use each week to help clean out the freezers. Hope this helps.

It's your challenge, you can set the $$ amount where you want/need it to be. The goal is just to go through the older items in your pantry, so you don't need to have any guilt about going to the store. I am doing this challenge, but I allow $$ for amazing deals that can't be passed on. I think it's crazy to pass on cheap food for the sake of an arbitrary challenge. A+ husband!

Hello I just found your channel. I do the pantry challenge and I still shop. I go every 2 weeks on a much smaller budget. My goal is to use things that have been sitting around since last year or is going to expire soon. I also use it to be creative with what I have. The state of the world right now, I refuse to deplete what my family of 5 needs. I don't think that's being a good steward of our food/money/family. So I say put off getting sugar for a week to be creative and then go to the store and get some of those items you really need.

I do a pantry challenge in Nov and Dec yearly. I learned that it is all about using up things that have been sitting around. That package of liver that just does not get eaten, the bits and bobs in the fridge door etc. I am not looking to deplete the entire pantry. Just that package of lentils that have been sitting around, the jars of beets I pickled last year, etc.

Great vlog! Those are valid questions going into the challenge, understanding that you make your own rules... While I knew that I had many of the staples, but forgot about coffee, dish soap... So we have an AirB&B and it's out of season, so we are using up that! But... my challenge is to use up the canned items, emptying the freezer to can.. like fruit to juice and jellies and making canned bone broth, meats. While I can bake and have time to cook those comfort foods now. When spring gets here it's busy and less time to cook, so it's great to grab a quick meal at home. Also in planning next years meat and seeds to harvest. What we liked and really didn't use/like. As Grandparents we really have so much that a year with less to grow could be for just fresh eating! I'm growing more flowers this year in my potagerGarden. Like you, I could rattle conversation 😂... Thanks! Subscribed ❤

This is your pantry challenge not anyone else's. You do what you need to and don't worry what anyone else thinks. I agree with how giving yourself a more generous budget feels more obtainable and I also agree with the amount of money being spent at the end of the challenge could defeat the savings. Especially when you have less on your shelf than some of the others. I'm in a similar situation, I just started pressure canning this year. But, I definitely have things i need to work thru. Good luck and don't worry about how you choose to do this challenge, your kitchen your rules.

When I do a pantry challenge I use my grocery budget to purchase items that are at my “stock up price”. For example, Fred Meyers (Kroger) had a sale on boneless skinless chicken breast this week and I picked up three large packages for about $12 each. That was $36, but I didn’t want to miss that sale and have to buy chicken at a higher price per pound later because I was doing a challenge. So for all of the stores in my area, I look at the loss leaders on the weekly sales flyers and spend my budget only on stocking up on those items.

Since I don't garden, I'm not depleting anything in my pantry without replacing it. I take advantage of clearance buys, and my two deep freezers are packed, so my challenge is to not add anything to them until I've worked down a bit. The way I see it is I can get things at today's price or wait and get it at the March price. If I were you, I would work on things in jars for the next canning season and replace all the other stuff as I needed it. Because whatever money I saved, more than likely, I will spend more in March.

My girl! Your oatmeal bake looks delicious!! 🤩 I'm checking my pantry to see if I can make one for us for this week.
You are so courageous AND successful just trying something to see if it works and I love that!!
I cook using way too many creams/cheeses and carb loaded meals. I do try to rotate those type of dishes with healthier meals and watching your videos has shown me to be more creative with my foods- think outside the box with standard dishes.
I always try to have peppers, onions and canned mushrooms on hand. They are good fillers for any dish, add flavor and work great in sauces or gravies. You can do a variety on stuffed peppers with your freezer meats, any type of stir fries using different proteins and in soups. Also go well with eggs! Or a veggie wrap for lunch for your super supportive husband!😉♥️

Im very intentional about the quantity for price. I know about how much we use in 6months or a year depending on how long they last on the shelf. This allows you to pull from your stock instead of paying full price.

You are learning. Many with the pantry challenge have very large pantries to rotate through. If you are short on things at the beginning it may tell you you need to keep stocked a much larger supply. I would suggest get 3 more water jugs and never let yourself have less than 3 full. Water is so healthy and important. I am rotating through stocked pantry that needs rotating but if there is a sale on something I’ll surely spend to stock those items. Don’t let someone else’s rules let you run short and wait till March. Creativity is good but having a good supply of things is good also.

I love that you are thinking of using another sweet option instead of just going to get sugar. I would think that using the corn cob jelly would be a wicked cool twist in the flavor of the product that you make! That would be exciting!
If this were wartime/ration time, you wouldn’t have the option of just popping off to pick some up. This challenge is to stretch your comfort zone and make do with what you have, correct? If you opted to pop off to the store to pick up something that you don’t have instead of using what you have to be creative than I don’t believe you would be as satisfied with your efforts towards the come the end of the challenge.

I am with you if you use everything up then when you go back to the store in March you will spend a ton. I don't do a No spend I do a Low spend, I set a very low budget and just get what I have to have... milk, bread, eggs, fresh fruit and veg, and sugar, flour and etc. I also set a small budget for stock up on good deals for when I get done with the low spend months, or weeks. I have a fear of not having any food in my house if doing a no spend, so I just set a low spend. It just makes more sense to me. I hope that makes sense to you :) I just try to use up the older items that I have on hand and as I use them and then I replace them, especially if it is something I use all the time. :)

Your grocery goal of $75 per week totally makes sense for where you're at and your first pantry challenge. Sometimes goals and budgets are to set you up for success and feeling successful. It's a mindset. And your goal isn't TO spend $75. It's to spend no more than $75, and that's great.
What you said about the March grocery bill totally makes sense. And I think whether or not that happens has a lot to do with where you are in your pantry stores journey and what your goals for the pantry challenges is. Some people using foe a no spend goal. The purpose of the challenge for me isn't to spend less but to use what has been sitting on my shelves or in my freezer for a long time, and to use what I preserved instead of buying similar things fresh.
Your doing great! Can't wait to see more.

New sub here (from the UK). As everyone else has been saying.... You do you, and don't give it a second thought. I like to join in the challenge, and we live on a small farm, but I don't have a milk cow, and my chickens aren't laying right now, so I just can't do a month without going to the grocery store, so I just do what I can . We start off eating up all the Christmas leftovers, then I sort my pantry and pull forward anything that is coming up on date, and I menu plan around those items. If I need to buy bits and bobs to enable me to do a recipe using short date items, then that's what I do . I still spend way less than normal and my pantry has a good clear out.... its a win win in my eyes.
I also promise myself that I will try to waste nothing, so those overripe bananas get turned into banana muffins (none of those get wasted haha), leftover meals go in the freezer in tin foil dishes for another time (or we have them for lunch the next day), any sad limp veg in the bottom of my fridge get drizzled with oil and roasted with whatever meal we are having that night, or gets turned into vegetable soup, if we run out of something I try to substitute, if that's not possible then I restock and don't feel guilty about it.
I also have a close friend who does the challenge with me and sometimes we swap things we know we will definitely not use. Works great and we each get something that we do use. My January bill is usually less than half my normal spend.... Result!
Your meals look great and I will definitely be trying the baked oatmeal as I too have leftover jam! Look forward to seeing what you make next week.

My idea of the PC is to use what’s in pantry that has been sitting for a while. This means thinking outside the box and coming up with creative ideas for these items. Doing a pantry stock up before going into it kind of defeats the purpose of the challenge. But you shouldn’t feel bad about buying some staples you need. You make your own rules. I would go an get them myself when you run out. That way you know you are using first in first out. I wouldn't run out of everything. I just have a running grocery list and get what I need when I need it. But I'm mindful of using up the older things while I'm doing that and not just taking the easy way out. Like if I run out of the rice and see I have quinoa. I will use the quinoa before getting more rice and using that right away. Make sure you're using fresh and frozen foods and a combination of the canned foods so nothing goes "bad".

It is hard to do this challenge if your pantry isn't full to begin with, I tried, but then figured I needed to begin with more food, then set my amounts. I think it would be good to do that then set a certain amount and spend less each week, It is a backward approach to extend your stockpile. I started at fifty, and wanted to work down to twenty, I failed though, because my stockpile was to low to begin with. I would say get really stocked for a few weeks then step in and try.

You have water in case of an emergency. Fair enough, however good drinking water is for your health. Sugar can be replaced with honey, syrup and other things. or use less of it.. If you want, shift your no spend pantry challenge to June instead of January since you have figured out where you have holes in your pantry. I waited 2 years of pantry prepping before I did this challenge. I didn’t see the benefit of just jumping on the trend without doing my own home prep. At first, it was a pantry 2 week, concentrating on what was open, partial containers, cleaning out the fridge, and using what I had before I bought anything new. Then I added in the freezer….what was improperly stored (freezer burn on the horizon), and how could I be creative with what was here. What spices were almost gone, etc. I have seen too many people stress themselves out with this challenge then really regret the grocery bill required to build back up their stash. Slow and steady is better than a sprint. Good luck to you, and enjoy the journey.

@@gardenrowes I created an “always on hand” grocery list for what I consistently use/make/eat, and that is my jumping off point for every shopping trip. I have decided this is my year of making bread so I added in more flour, yeast, etc to do that, plus one to two new recipes per month. I also gave myself a separate grocery debit card so I can’t really overspend (which is so easy), and at the end of the month I take whatever is left and buy extras of what is on my on hand list. You can replace sugar with honey, I never thought about the jelly - if you try it, I'd be interested to know.
I did fail the other night. I was exhausted, had no leftovers and didn't want to cook, so I went to a local place and got a hamburger. Just start yourself a list for March. This way you will use your oldest food. It is ok to go buy sugar and water.

    Hey, Mary!
Rhetorical question for you. Are you putting aside the $75 that you have allotted yourself for the weekly per chance needs? If so, you may be able to use what you haven’t spent in March. It would be interesting to know if you need all the money saved to restock.

Yes! That is definitely in the back of my mind - whatever I end up doing, I’ll definitely share!

In a pantry challenge no stocking up, the idea is to pare down. Buy basic things to fill in the gaps.

I guess my advice is more of a grocery spend challenge. You have to adapt it to you.

I’m doing this challenge for 1 year, why that long because I have that much stuff I need to go through. My weekly food budget is $50. A week
If I don’t use it it rolls over.food prices are different all over the USA no guilt.

Good for you!! That’s impressive and inspiring! I would definitely like to see how far I could potentially go with this, knowing that I would get the staples when needed.

Get a good scale and weigh your bread ingredients. It's a game changer

Great tip!! I weighed my flour for the first time with that bagel recipe - maybe that’s why it turned out better than before! 💡

uh, spend the saved money in March? No, you just shop normally and use sales to restock slowly.

    • @gardenrowes
      @gardenrowes  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I wouldn’t intentionally spend all of the money saved up - just thinking ahead at how much it would cost if I waited to restock everything until then. After all the friendly comments and suggestions, I won’t be doing that anyway. 🙂
