Is Brendan Kavanagh A Racist? Reflections on Pianogate

  • Is Brendan Kavanagh (Dr. K) a racist? This is probably the question that millions of Chinese people grappled with as they saw one of their alleged little pink superstars, Newton Leng, tussle, turn, fight, and squabble with the man who is currently the world's favorite hipster pianist as an international spy drama with the Chinese Communist Party as unwitting participant.
    But what exactly is racism?
How did that work in Pianogate? What responsibility, if any, does someone living in another country have to understand your standards, ways, and preferred way of existing in this world?
Does this incident warrant being interviewed on the Piers Morgan show as a freedom of speech advocate?
Watch this video to the end to find out!

You're absolutely right! I don't have a good answer to this, but I do wish that this were done in the right way. Maybe sometimes it really does take some foreign interference to come in and deal with things like this, but I do wish that it wasn't based on the actions of individuals, or at the very least it was based on a stronger case than the one that had been presented to us.
Maybe it really is that something like this needs to just be done quick and dirty and settled all the way. I'm open to admitting the possibility that I'm wrong here, but I will say that I think it's still important to be able to look at individuals and remember that we're dealing with actual people here rather than make sweeping judgments from the very start.

They didn’t clearly state their objective. We can all see they did not mind being filmed earlier, even dancing an playing the piano. When the were getting ready to record a private show at the piano, they asked him not to film them with his 2 million subscriber channel. The shouty guy gave everyone something else to focus on.

I don't wish him long-term bad or anything, but I'm pretty sure that he can't be a representative for the Communist Party even if he wants to at this point, considering how he hemmed and hawed his way through the question about communism brought to him by Dr. K 🤷🏻‍♂️

The missbehavior of Newton is what offends me most. Exactly what you say, he tried to make Dr. K look like an Sexist and an racist. Now, communism is from out the view of capitalism the one enemy, as it prepares to give each one enough, imagine whilst anyone only has to give (work) what he can afford to give. To me China or Russia, wich claim to be communisms, are in fact capitalisms just like the rest of the world. I don't care what name a thing gives itself, but when I want to communicate, I need to know the meaning of the expressions used exactly. Americans say something is 'ridiculous' today when they are overwhelmed by it. We got used to it. Brendon asking for them to come from 'communist china' in my eyes was his try to reach out a helpful hand. They should have just explained their problem. But if you are going wrong for a long time, you often do not see and even will not be able to learn that you are going wrong.

    • @VictorTan
      @VictorTan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Right on the money!
Wait, this is a video that discusses communism. Should money even be a thing here? 😂😂
Jokes aside! I do believe that, at large, we as a society need a lot more focus on individual behavior rather than just form images and idealizations inside our minds about what other people are like or what they believe.
Sentiment is one thing, but how a person actually behaves is another thing altogether.
Just because someone is a Chinese national doesn't necessarily mean that they are communist, let’s say, and just because they are holding a Chinese flag doesn’t necessarily entail that they are Chinese, although it’s not an unreasonable assumption to make.
Also, while there is freedom of expression, if you are in raising the national flag of another country, the natural question, whether you're doing this for a video or not, is whether you're trying to overtly influence people into believing something that they should not believe at the end of the day, a question that is magnified by the fact that some of the people concerned even proclaimed that they were citizens of Britain.
Having said that, just because they behaved in a certain way that doesn't mean that's entirely characteristic of the social system that they originated from, which indicates that while Dr. K's assumption was reasonable to make under the circumstances, it was not correct.
I think that this was acceptable given the circumstances that were in play at the time, as well as the sensitive nature of the conversation, but it makes a little less sense when you consider what the initial event was later used for, as I detail in the video.
In a similar way, and for slightly different reasons though, simply because somebody has managed to command the popular voice and has become a millionaire who is making thousands of pounds from every single livestream that does not necessarily mean that they are necessarily the voice of justice as there is a fine distinction between what is popular and what is correct; these things can correlate with one another, but they are not necessarily one and the same.
Society as a whole does not often make such textured judgments though, and that's fine, but once again, I’d like to emphasize that this should be the case only in the short term.
In the long term, we are aspiring towards a higher standard. The tide that lifts us should bring us all up towards a plane of higher awareness. And ideally, although this is not a historically determined thing, it would bring us to a place of better coexistence, where heightened awareness will condition us and allow us to see every person's actions from a clear and objective lens.
Thank you as always for your insightful comments, my friend!

Of course BK is not a capitalist. Just go back and look at videos of how he interacts with people of every nationality and race! In no way does he prefer one race or nationality over another. In this case, BK was just trying to point out that the laws in England are different than those in China. In the western world, if you are Chinese, you're either communist or trapped in a country that you don't share the same ideology with. Again, westerners see the Chinese flag as a communist flag, because the government is Communist and the flag represents the government. And, if we seek further info online, we are told that yes, the red flag with stars does represent the communist party. So in BK's mind, he is only stating fact, not being racist in anyway.
I've hosted Chinese exchange students in our home and it was a lovely experience, but I would never want to live in a communist country. And just because I do not agree with communism AT ALL, I am not racist. I still enjoy spending time with pleasant people from China!

I’m not a huge fan of communism either, but I would guess the main issue here is that he went from behavior to concluding communism to then concluding that communism was the main issue underpinning the issue. It was a little odd of an impetus for a whole campaign like the one he’s doing, though I can see why it’s popular!

Agree with your conclusion that DrK is not a racist. In fact if you watch him numerous videos of public performances back to 6 years ago , the had interested very well with many oriental people. He is a charismatic performer & young & old had jolly good times playing the piano & some singing & dancing. Everybody filmed him & so did the group of Little Pinks. Adenine shook hands with Brendan & danced as her comrade played the piano. Later, she accused him of touching her - very odd. The real reason why their initial friendly attitude suddenly changed was the appearance of spy Christine ( later confirmed by Miss Liu when she put out her video to spin the confrontation with her numerous lies) . Christine is suspected of covert activity to influence the British government on behalf of the CCP - a warning by MI 5. Hence, she did not wish to be filmed . That's why Nasty Newton & the other 2 women demanded Brendan to erase their images. According to Police, it is legal to film in public. PCc Little Pinks threatened to sue Brendan. The Nasty Moron falsely accused Brendan of sexual misconduct & provocatively repeated " don't touch her" more than a dozen times ! He was rude, aggressive & autocratic: " What's your name"? How would YOU feel if some Moron falsely accused you of sexual assault & racism ? It a wonder Brendan kept his cook. I would gave lost NY patience & told Newton to piss off ! Bredon stood his ground & for freedom of expression. The whole world saw the incident UNEDITED Livestreamed. I am a Chinese living in Holland . I love China but not the CCP. 1. BK finished one video when the Chinese group danced and played the piano.
    2. BK said that happened during the LIVE stream, which it didn't
    3. BK said he knew the Japanese group that were with Jim, he had seen them before and shook hands with them, the only person he shook hands with was the lady in the red coat.
4.BK said he didn't know they were waiting to use the piano, he thought the Japanese and Chinese were one big group, which undermines point 3.
    5. He made one video 6mins long in which Jim sang and played the piano. He signed out of that and started a LIVE stream
    6. He told Jim this was now Part 2, Jim said he would do what he did in Part one.
    7. BK welcomed his viewers to the LIVE stream and asked them to "stick around, encase he needed their help"!!!!
    8. BK then played for another 9mins until Jim came over after talking to the girl with the red scarf. You can still see the 2 Japanese guys with the filming equipment in the background and the Chinese group was now a little larger so where ready to use the piano.
    9. BK was asked nicely to respect their wishes to not film them whilst they did their piece on the piano, he declined
    10. BK was asked to stop playing for a few minutes during a LIVE stream in the same place a year earlier in the same month. A crew member for channel 4 asked if he would stop playing for a few minutes while they recorded a piece to camera with Claudia Winkelmen, reluctantly he obliged, but said there might be some "argee bargee if he comes back" and asked his viewers to once again to stick around things might get heated.
Clearly he can't stand being told what to do, or even asked to be a little cooperative in some circumstances, it's his piano and some how has more right than anyone else to use it. It wouldn't have mattered where those groups were from, all his videos that are argumentative or antagonistic receive more views, its that simple.

@@howardj602 If he was born in England he is English, by law; it does not matter his Irish antecedents. I am anglo-Irish; my mother was born in England and her antecedents were Scottish, Irish and Welsh. And while I was born In Ireland and spent my childhood there, I've lived in England and America for most of my adult life. I am a naturalised British person and have dual citizenship with Ireland (and the EU). So I am an Irish Brit. Sorry it's so confusing, but there has been this interflow between Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and Ireland for a thousand years or more. Still, Ireland is not British, even though some people think it is. It is not. Irish people do not accept they are part of the British isles, so technically it should be termed as Britain and Ireland.
