The Problem with Multi-Blade Cartridge Razors

  • Most razors today are made by a very small handful of manufacturers. They have been selling a model of convenience and speed, not necessarily of high-quality or performance shaving. The lead designer of the OneBlade razor, Mark Prommel, explains some of the misleading notions that razor consumers have taken at face value in the last few decades of cartridge product development.

I was so used to using cartridge razors ever since I started shaving. I`ve seen some things about safety razors before, but I never cared about looking into them more. Their design is what drew me in mostly. Once I read the benefits of what they can do, I decided to buy one myself. I was scared of using them at first because of the sharpness of one blade but I went with it. I had to figure out the angle but once I did, I saw a huge difference on my face in a couple of days. It looked way smoother and little to no irritation.
Personally, I like taking my time with it. With cartridges, I could go faster but they get dull quick. The safety blades could last a bit longer for me anyway. One of my favorites about them is the dual-sided blade. So, I could use one side for like a week, then the next week I use the other side before replacing just the blade. After using them, going back to cartridge razors feels cheap and not as effective. So worth getting them.

I have a variation of this razor , it is a safety razor and as a guy who used to get alot of irritation and ingrown hairs these things are a game changer . Not touching for any brands just safety razors in general. I've tried different creams and for awhile I was even using a women's cream on my face nothing worked. Safety razors any guys out there that experience the same ...game changer

Safety razors changed my life for the better. My dad taught me to shave with cartridge razor, but I couldn’t shave more than once a week because I learned the hard way that I have sensitive skin. But once I tried a safety razor, I dumped my cartridge razor and never looked back.

i would like to add that there is a common saying that shavinng AGAINST the grain couses ingrown hairs
i do shave both against and same way as the grain so i can get a perfect shave ( not always it takes too long )
i have never had a ingrown hair

You missed some basic things. You have less irritation when you use one blade at a time, that is, the DE razors, because you have 1 blade - 1 stroke. When you have 5 blades, it is 5 blades - 5 strokes in one. Of course, you torture your skin 5 times more.
And when you have a single blade, a DE blade, it MUST be sharp, or you will notice that is not. When you have 5 blades, they can be all pretty dull, and try to perform their role using their number, not the sharpness. Generally, the multiple blade razors are not as sharp as the double edge blade. It is so logical, they don't need to be, because there are 5 blades, instead of 1. The manufacturer reaches his goal: he offers you 5-7 blades (and you are thrilled, the more the better?) for a big price for each blade cartridge, and he doesn't need to use any super materials for the blades or to make it especially sharp.

      Cartridge razors are dogsh!
And made to only make the company money snd nevrr benefit YOU and multiple blades against the skin actually causes putred irritation and ingrown hairs, cause the first blade cuts the hair then the second comes at the skin snd continues
It's called the razor blade scam for a reason

I have thick hairs and can’t even drag the cartridge razor down thick areas (like mustache, chin, jaw line), it just grabs the hairs and can’t keep going. Even with a brand new one, and soft hair out of hot shower, can’t cut through. Plus takes 4-6 pass overs to get 90% of it.
      Massive pain!
Might try a safety blade instead, or man up and just buy a single edge knife.

Currently I just use the one blade (electric, but closer shave than an electric close shave guard). It’s alright. Doesn’t last as long as a real shave, but doesn’t upset my skin as much either.
Still think a safety razor/straight edge is best, but don’t cheap out .. the good ones are expensive.

@@carsonhunt4642 Thanks! I've used the one blade before too so I know what you mean. Even with the one blade I would still sometimes nick myself.
My beard is both thick and grows in bizarre ways, especially near my adam's apple. I tried today the Gillette blade that is for sensitive skin (only has two blades in the cartridge) and it went a bit better.
I hate in all these shaving videos it shows people just going straight from their chin down to their neck. If I attempted that I would immediately cut the hell out of my face. My dad never taught me how to manual shave, though that's because he taught me how to use an electric razor instead. Guess he has the same beard problems as me...

    • @onebladeshave
      @onebladeshave  ปีที่แล้ว +9

Sort of.. a good single edge shave, regardless of the razor, should incorporate three passes.. with the grain, across the grain, then against the grain. The issue with multiblades is that the blades are so close to each other that they cut as the hair is being pulled up.
