  • The famous work-life balance is just an illusion, everyone wants it, hardly anyone has it.” Daniela Elsner suggests an alternative concept for combining our different tasks and roles in life, the “Tailor your Life Principle". As a university professor, executive coach, psychotherapist, book author and ex-single mother of three, she is considered an authentic expert on work-life balance, resilience and career-family compatibility. In her talk she shares her personal and scientific knowledge on how successful people get “it all” under one roof. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This tedtalk is pure brilliance! It deconstructs the myth of a multi-systemic life but rather takes a holistic approach. Such approach should be furthered to promote societal reforms in the area of politics, economics & culture (e.g., taxes, budgeting) and define a pathway for thinking and living in the 21st century, and let people unfold their full potential, rendering personal leader- and ownership at all levels possible!

This is one of the best advice I have had in my life. I noticed quite early that I wasn't good at multitasking. I often insisted that I am a 'onething at a time person' but everyone else around me kept encouraging me to learn how to multitask. I am glad that you have affirmed what I always knew deep down. Thank you so much.

Great. I felt such a relief! Keeping a "work-life balance" was actually exhausting for me (!).

    I love the patchwork idea.
I already know my "Roles" a la Steven Covey's time management method.
These are my Big Patches. eg Wife, Family Member, HomeMaker, Work, Volunteer, Play, Self Care.
Each Big Patch contains smaller patches within them. eg: Play = Holidays, Days Out, Hobbies.
I like the idea of standing back and taking a look at a distance at my patchwork quilt for the year or my life.
I guess this is time blocking.
I gave up multi tasking years ago and agree with focusing on what you choose to do next.
    Much more satisfying.

Consistent balance is always difficult and will always be more one-sided at times because you need to account for the external environment and things that happen beyond your control.

There's some really terrible examples used here. Making a contrast between unemployed people and the enjoyment of work is just shocking.
Work life balance means nothing to someone unemployed, they don't work!
And also the question of who decides what is considered work and what is not (or maybe what is both). Surprise, it's the person who's life it is that gets to decide that.

    Such a biased video ☹️
employees have to make decisions and be responsible for work life balance.
But Bosses give orders and expect employees to forget work life balance
    But they play golf 🏌️‍♂️
and have awesome Work Life Balance.
If bosses can’t handle multiple task on their what is the need and purpose to expect from employees? 🤷‍♂️

This kind of talk is toxic because it set us all for very high expectations. Working doesn't equal happiness for a lot of people. When you are just an employee, you can't just do as you pleased. If I could work less I would but money is the problem. My personal life matger more to me. A lot of people don't live a life we fully enjoy and it's not just excuses. Very biased talk. (And her family life probably suffer lots)

The point is that excuses are very natural and nothing to be ashamed of - but something to think about and change, if you want to be more happy. There is a connection between taking responsibilty and getting what you want ...
