  • F-Zero was once the most acclaimed racing game/franchise in the entire world. So much so, that even to this day, people consider it the pioneer of the genre, or at least the franchise that helped popularise it. In recent years though, the franchise has a whole has seen a devastating decline in its interest and reach. How did this happen? What caused one of the greatest franchises with all the potential in the world to now become one of the most forgotten. Today, we look to find out.

    F-Zero is so metal. It's fast pace, unforgiving, expects you to sacrifice health for speed (literally), and it rewards you for killing your opponents with skulls. It kind of has a super-hero over-the-top costume aesthetic, and the world feels both gritty and dystopian yet exhilarating and advanced. A remastered GX would definitely be the perfect way for Nintendo to test the waters on this franchise deserving a revive. And if they decide to make a full new game, I could see them leaning into the hard-core nature of the game. This ain't no Mario Kart. No Blue Shell going to save you now.

    Such a shame that Nintendo struggles with 2 of its beloved space franchises. (StarFox and F-Zero). F-Zero is definitely more of a skilled based game, which for dedicated racing game players, would be a welcome challenge, especially after Mario Kart keeps introducing elements that make the game, ironically, more difficult for skilled players due to the lack of predictability. You can go from dead last to first place in one lap with the right luck.

    • @Legend-of-Kai
      @Legend-of-Kai  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's part of the reason why Mario Kart is so popular, the accessibility is extremely high for anyone to get into it. F-Zero is the opposite, you better be prepared to fail over and over before getting the hang of it. I'm guessing a lot of people never gave it too much of a chance unfortunately.

    F-Zero was basically a franchise to show off Nintendo’s new powerful hardware
    It’s not a coincidence that when Nintendo stopped caring about producing powerful console starting with Wii they stopped caring about F-Zero

    • @am_pm.17
      @am_pm.17 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Kindly disagree about it being Nintendo (necessarily) not caring - if you look further into it, lots of once-popular racing series have died off slowly on ALL platforms. I'm talking about Ridge Racer for example, Wipeout as well, Burnout too, Colin McRae Rally, Sega's Outrun... And even NFS while still around, is nowhere near as popular as it once was. These days it's all about sims (Forza & GT) or the casual Mario Kart. This isn't a Nintendo problem, this is a whole industry genre problem.

    • @TheDr502
      @TheDr502 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@am_pm.17 That's true. The PS3 was arguably the last console on which arcade racing games were still relevant.
      Daytona USA's been gone since the Dreamcast. RR died out after RR7 on the PS3. Burnout died out after Paradise on the PS3. Outrun died out after Outrun 2006. Some of them died out after only 2 or 3 games like Juiced, Midnight Club, Cruisin' USA, or Street Racing Syndicate. It's interesting how, the further we went into the future, the more futuristic racing games like F-Zero and Wipeout disappeared. NFS is probably the last arcade racing game series standing, and Unbounded's failure is, IMO, the result of a general drop in quality since NFS: Most Wanted.
      There were more recent attempts to make open-world arcade-style racing games such as The Crew. Haven't heard about that one in years, though. The last news I heard about non-NFS arcade racing games was Burnout Paradise Remastered from 5 years ago.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said about F-Zero games...sucks

  • @NewGabeOrder

    Maybe add a "resurrection" mechanic where falling out of the course warps you back to an earlier point in the race at the cost of your machine energy. That, or add an "item game" to help players transition from Mario Kart or Wipeout. It also helps if F-Zero gets steering assist options or other similar accessibility options. Not only that, Nintendo can re-release X Expansion Kit, Climax or a new game with a course editor and an online sharing center for user-made custom courses.

    Kinda feels like the games not doing well is a case of poor timing (every time a new one came out after the first one, it was either before or after Mario Kart since even the GBA had Super Circuit) and the series itself not being very casual friendly. While i'd love for the series to come back, I can't see it getting a new game without them severely handicapping what makes it good to begin with.
    The biggest issue with any skill based racer like this compared to Mario Kart is that you can't just pop it in the console and have a fun time with other people who haven't played it before, they'll be confused and generally not have the ability to keep up with anybody who's played it for longer than a day. With Mario Kart even if you suck at the actual driving part, the wacky items and colorful locales keep casual players coming back and while that game has it's own skill, it is far less important to the enjoyment of the game than something like F-Zero.

    Great video! Honestly, I feel like if Nintendo played their cards right, they could renew interest in the franchise. Maybe they could release a remaster/remake of GX, like they did with Metroid Prime recently. I was kinda surprised with how much interest that remake had (in my area, the game was completely sold out and online scalpers were everywhere for weeks) and there really seems to be a audience who wants older games from that era. If they remake GX with a new coat of paint, perhaps a few extra maps or bonus features, and a nice $40 price, I would absolutely buy it, as someone who couldn’t play it on the original game cube. And from beyond that point, they could probably work with other studios or hire new talent to look at the series with fresh eyes and figure out the perfect way to refine and innovate the games. But this is also Nintendo so who knows lol

    • @Legend-of-Kai

      A HD remaster would go along way. I think Nintendo doesn't really just how popular the Switch is and its potential ability to revive whole franchises. I know they brought some of the older games back on the online switch thing but eh its not quite the same as a new entry even if its just a HD remaster with some new additions. But yeah I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. Yes remasters and such are seen as 'cash' grabs but lets be real its been 20 years since the last F-Zero...I'm sure a discounted price like you've said, new features, and updated crisp graphics would go a long way with bringing more eyes back to the franchise.

    But all jokes aside it really did seem like Nintendo themselves were sabotaging F-Zero by releasing it after Mario Kart with N64 or in the same year (2003) with GX, Double Dash and again Kirby Air Ride, I wonder if DD affected Air Ride’s sales as well. Another example I can think of is Warioware Get It Together releasing a month before Mario Party Superstars and that kind of affecting its sales too because everyone is gonna play Mario Party and that particular game was a return to form with mini games from across the whole series, but I digress.

    I think there is still plenty of room for innovation for the series. It just needs to be in the right hands. The difficulty is it's main gimmick similar to dark souls. It's what brings people to it. I think if they double down on the difficulty and add to that, it would do much better in terms of variety. Adding more obstacles, more chaotic features. I liked the ability to destroy other racers so lets build upon that. Destroying the environment around you to destroy the racers in death race, add lasers to the cars or just something more to add to the concept.
    I think this might be more controversial but do something similar to star fox adventures where we see captain falcon outside of the car. His appearance in smash has made him more known for fighting than racing at this point so maybe some beat em up mechanics. Idk just something to set the series apart from mario kart while still sticking to the roots.

The same goes for F-Zero GX from F-zero X, even though I prefer the latter, but that's beside the point. Now I see why Nintendo released the F-Zero 99 in the SNES style rather than make a new game and why smash bros recently kept alluding to the SNES games and it makes sense from a sales standpoint as that's the most popular F-Zero game. Though, I do hope we see a new entry in the franchise because it might end up being the best one since F-Zero has a lot to catch up on, such as online multiplayer, track editor (for overseas) etc.

    All it takes are a few streamers calling it the Dark Souls of racing and BAM, sales again.

    I’ll enlighten you on a different alternate reality:
    _”In F-Zero Awakening you can romance the racers and Captain Falcon's lines all were localized into Falcon noises by Nintendo Tree House. You can choose a Bounty Hunter, walk around cities and catch criminals and beat up thugs. You can do lots of missions GTA style in this Spectacular F-Zero game, besides just racing for prize money. And yes you can Falcon Punch Criminals but you gotta go out of your way unlock it along with other fighting moves”_
    _”Fire Emblem: Climax would be the last FE game and it would be a Japan only release, due to the anime tie in not doing too hot despite the massive push it got”_

      Yep most fans of “dead” franchises tend to have hate boners series like FE, Splatoon and Xenoblade IG

      @@DDKoD Well it’s mostly due to Smash that FE is looked down upon, Splatoon earned it’s popularity on its own merits without Smash and I don’t see much hate for it, Xenoblade could go on to be the next thing to receive hate boners if it gets tons of characters at once within a single Smash game.

      @@squallleonhart9387 It’s not just about Smash dude. There are people(again fans of discontines series) that dislike those 3 series cauae they’re getting games as opposed to other series that stopped selling.

    So basically, Mario Kart killed the F-Zero franchise.
    Ironic

    The contradiction of GX being so highly regarded but not selling well reminds me of what happened with Street Fighter 3 Third Strike. Maybe it wasn't actually received too well by old school fans at the time but over time it has become more and more highly regarded by the increasingly numerous younger fans who make their opinions heard online. You also have the Sega contingent online that loves to brag about any game they can associate with Sega development and/or a Sega console (and they love the irony of claiming that Sega did one of the Nintendo's franchises better than Nintendo in the case of F-Zero GX).
    Nowadays most Street Fighter fans in online polls and TH-cam videos will tell you that 3rd Strike was the best SF and yet when you go back in time, the SF3 games didn't sell well. They just didn't strike the same chord with most people that SF2 and later on SF4 did. The same may be true with GX. It doesn't help either that the Gamecube was such a flop. That's why the most impressive numbers you laid out were Mario Kart 64 selling more than Super Mario Kart even though the N64 flopped so hard in Japan. Mario Kart continues to be a powerhouse seller no matter how well or how poorly (Wii U) a Nintendo console does.

    So, 49% of the users who answered your poll said "hell yes" to a new F-Zero game. Not bad.
    But, what Nintendo would see are the 37% who said "no lol", the 13% who said "what's F-Zero?", and the 1% who didn't care enough about F-Zero to answer. 37%+13%+1% = 51%. 51%>49%. Therefore, Nintendo would conclude that F-Zero couldn't survive these days, unlike their rainmakers like Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon.
    In short, they'd just spin these stats into a negative to fit their narrative.

    The F-Zero series has been dead for almost 20 years! Seriously Nintendo, please for a love of God give us the new F-Zero game!
