I bought 3 one for me and 2 for my nephews. If youre not running AAA titles battery life is fine. I regularly take mine out to the fields and game while my dogs run. I can play project zomboid in the palm of my hands. So far does not overheat and my sd card is fine
and Asus themselves showcase that on their website when you google a comparison between Z1 vs Z1 extreme. Best game fps wise is COD MW2? Diablo IV isn't even that graphically advanced and Z1 extreme can achieve a WHOPPING 42fps.. this is a nintendo switch but with add-ons

You know the best part? The 2 minute battery life. Just such a huge improvement over the Steam Deck. You get the authentic desktop PC gaming experience and have to keep it plugged in to get any decent amount of play time.

From that point onward you turn the system on and immediately load into their steamos frontend which makes it feel more like a console. At no point do you ever have the touch the linux side of things, all your games should just work (playability rating not withstanding since something not being playable might be a single touch screen selection) The Rog on the other hand does a windows setup and from there you need to update everything and manually setup everything yourself from the windows 11 desktop,. Once done then you can set a front end at that point if you want, but more likely then not you want to make full use of your armory menu and the benefit of running some things off the windows system so likely wont. So TLDR: The steamdeck is a handheld console that you can load into arch linux if you want, The Rog Ally is a handheld pc that you can play games on (albeit very well once you tweek each game just right).

Your point about cooling is irrelevant, a Steam Deck doesn't need a second fan as it has half the TDP of the Ally, therefore generating less energy and heat.
Don't get the Ally, get either a Steam Deck OLED, Legion GO or the upcoming Ally X, as the Ally is known to have issues (Melting SD Card reader), and if you do have issues, well, ASUS is kinda under fire for horrible warranty (they will try to charge you for warranty repairs)
I bought one this season and love it....granted it took a whole day to update (thx to the bad wifi at my hotel) I love the machine, with battery protection on (max charge 80%) I got an hour game play on F/O 4 with max settings before I stopped with 15% battery left.
Man I’m so glad I went and saw one of those at Best Buy I was so curious about the scale I went to get a new mouse and look at laptops and they had one in the corner of the store and oh man it’s so small and nice it’s just the right size for my hands I was worried it was going to be huge. Now I just gotta see a steam deck in person

I was thinking legion go too but depending on if your leaving the house w it or not and can’t bring a charger, I’d say save the money and get the rog. Steam deck is using same chip as the cheaper option rog ally and it still plays less games, the rog ally w z1 extreme chip is the same one in legion go, has a wider variety of games, may cook sd cards but tbh i was going to use a split cable so i can charge it while playing games or you could get a one of those usb sized ssd pick your fighter lol
I just got it, TH-cam videos don’t do this thing justice , the colors on the screen , and size are AWSOME , I’ve gotten almost 3 hours of battery time , older games get me like 5. STEAMS backlog of games is unreal. Also, nobody goes outdoors to play any video games console , if you do you may get robbed ore mugged , I don’t mind plugging it in out on my patio , or bed , or on the couch , it’s all good. And I love windows , yeah it’s a bit glitchy , it’s always been that way, I really LOATH Linux.

I ended up going with the Steam deck. I was surprised how much more comfortable the deck is over the this one.
I'm holding out for the Legion Go, the Win 4 7840U refresh or maybe even the TJD T101.
