There's a 80 year old building in in the town closest to me it was the town hall but they built a new one 10 years ago and it started falling apart and is a safety hazard so they relocated to the old town hall after the new one cost the town 5 million Rand to build that's that's around 356 thousand US Dollars. The older buildings are much stronger than the newer ones.

In real life, enemies would try to grab spears, break bridges support, throw stones. Make rams from nearby logs. Most plebians know how to swim.

@Lion Amongst Sheep one plebe will sacrifice himself and get spear lodged in him, 10 other plebes will grab the lodged spear, Let's see whose grip is stronger, 1 soldier or 10 plebes farmers. plebes can swim and have wood cutter axes, few strong plebe with woodcutter can hack a bridge support. A well aimed stone can crack a skull, fracture knee joints. A well aimed stone can break the knuckles of a spearman. Plebes can swim and by pass the bridge, and attack the Phalanx from back, its soft underbelly.

They do really, the bigger the number the bigger the ratio of kill before dying for the smaller army(bigger the enemy army less room for mistake)

I love how well the units pack up, in warhammer total war i hate how my supposedly aggressive orcs just social distance when trying to get down a street

Orcs stink, even to each other. They stay separate based upon smell alone.
That’s the main think that turned me off if warhammer, units just phase into each other don’t really exist within the world just another background asset
The proper way for phalanx to operate is once the front line of the enemy is stopped You begin to move forward while being careful to maintain your ranks
But, you really wouldn't do that in this situation, defending a narrow path that the enemy is trying to breakthrough. Trying to push forward here would be an unnecessary risk, especially with the field of battle ahead littered with bodies.
@@TheNinjaDC no you must move forward and attack. As for bodies they step on them. The push forward occurred in pulses. You must push against the enemy in order to sow disorganization and fear. If you just stand there they will press against you and win.

Moral of the battle? Long stabby things defeat short stabby things wielded by men with no armour, no tactics who lack ability to swim across to attack the phalanx or that if some of their men grab hold of long stabby things that some of their comrades with short stabby things can then actually kill some of the enemy!

Knew how this was going to pan out the moment i saw pike phalanx. The most BROKEN thing in all of Total War, even the most elite units get shat on by a basic pike phalanx unit.

They don't they have the shield hooked on their shoulder to somewhat protect and then use both hands

It makes the weight of the spear point leveraged 20 feet away from you easier to control. You're carrying more weight overall but they're conditioned for it. In the end it makes it way easier to maneuver and control the spear for long periods.
My favorite part was them all trying to figure out how to get on to the bridge

20000 versus 500 is about 40:1 odds. That is insane. Just booby trap the bridge and fight a guerrilla war in the forests. The smaller army really need reinforcements.

pro tip when having trouble with pike or shield walls take your unit(s) and drag them over or past the enemy formation so theyll actually push through the wall and then the enemy will be ripe for the slaughter
Seeing as how thousands of plebs are back to back on the bridge, if it was realistic, the phalanx would have crumbled by the plebs charge, sure the frontal plebs will die but the back would just kept on charging and just run over their dead comrades. Man I wonder how that would look

I pull this stunt all the time in Total War Attila, get a few pike units and a heavy infantry unit to protect from arrows and you will never lose a seige battle.

See, I love seeing these and they’re awesome but what really annoys me about these phalanx troops is that, in real combat, their pikes would get bodies stuck on them, or snap, etc. If they were against determined barbarians, they might even throw themselves on to the spears to make them ineffective
I don’t think you would have a single group of Pikemen if it’s real combat
Try using a shield wall on the bridge and see if they can hold them against Plebs. If that works then first let them fill up the bridge and then have the shield wall push them back. Once their off the bridge then launch a full attack against them.

It's impossible no matter how many are the plebs to brake a phalanx especially in a narrow place like that bridge. A very interesting challenge is to put this phalanx in a middle of a valley and the plebs all around them although I believe that this will make no difference.
No the way to defeat a phalanx was to flank it also if it was real the 20,000 plebs whould have broken through
@@admiralshadowofasunderedst3068 don't be so sure. Unfortunately for the plebs they have not any armor. Just swords. In comparison phalanx soldiers were like knights. Almost invulnerable. The others can't go even close. Don't mention the narrow battlefield. In Thermopyles a battle like this happened against the best Asian army. Well equipped and numerous. You know the result

@@admiralshadowofasunderedst3068 numbers have nothing to do with it in my opinion. It's like to fight unarmed. The Spartan hoplites at the time were the most trained, well equipped and brutal force. Like the Roman legions in Roman Era. No army could fought them face to face. Especially Persians who were light equipped. Imagine the plebs. It's like nowadays to compare a regular army against a mob.

Best strategy in this case would be to send half your army across by swimming or finding a ford , then trap the enemy on the bridge and just wait for them to have to surrender or come at you. Any general who would rush his entire army out on to the bridge is fighting a battle of desperation.
