Today J dives into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to answer one of the oldest mysteries of them all - Who was the youngest quidditch player for a century before Harry showed up?!

Caleb Rizio that’s a good point so maybe. That also makes the story very interesting, because harry and his friends used the thestrals to fly to the ministry to confront Voldemort.

This time I actually thought the theory might have a flaw at first: For Harry to technically be the youngest player in a century, the player in 1892 would need to have been younger when starting his first quidditch season than Harry was. Assuming that the seasons always started at roughly the same time in the year, this player would have to be born in August (later than Harry but early enough to be 11 on 1st September 1892). I thought this was very unlikely so I searched for Dumbledores birthday and found this at hp-lexicon.org:
"Rita says that Dumbledore was 'nearing' his 18th birthday when he left Hogwarts in June", which means that he was indeed born in July or August! 🤯
I guess this finally proves the theory!

Not really supportive of this theory, but Dumbledore also shows up to some of the games played at Hogwarts, showing interest in the game, and if this is true it would give a deeper meaning to the snitch with the stone in it, it would have been something they had in common.

But if he had to attend tyhe matches, why isn't he at every one? He isn't at Harry's first match and at the second one Fred sais "The whole school's out there! Even - blimey - Dumbledore's come to watch!" as if this was unusual, and Fred and George would have gone to Hogwats for 2,5 years and been playin quidditch for 1,5 by then so they should know if Dumbledore attended each match. Personally the headmasters of my old schools never attended any spoting events in which we participated or aranged on our own
I also wonder if that's why Dumbledore kept the snitch. Did he keep it knowing he'd hide something inside of it to be opened seven years later or did he keep it because Harry catching it was a huge achievement and he wanted a memento? Does he keep every snitch used?

In addition, Dumbledore has his birthday at the end of the summer, making him, as well as Harry, one of the youngest students in his year.
Because somebody who has a birthday in the fall, could also get into the Quiditch team in his/her first school year, but would still have been almost a year older than Harry and Dumbledore were.

Also fitting with this - Dumbledore's last gift to Harry through his will is an item of Quidditch, the famous First Golden Snitch. A gift from the first youngest player to his successor.

In OOTP, when Hagrid is teaching about Thestrals, he says that when Dumbledore doesn't feel like apparating to travel, he will fly on a Thestral. So I mean there's that.
yet, he totally used broom in sixth book...
just (3) points o consider:
1) Dumbledore cares about Harry; especially, knowing the boy's fate is intertwined with Voldemort's. (And thus great trials are ahead for Harry). However, look at all the books, there is always a sense of distance and formality with Dumbledore. It's just his his way.
2) It was also a kindness of sort. I think Professor Dumbledore wanted Harry to have the joy of being the youngest player in a ~century without everyone comparing Harry to young Albus. He didn't want Harry even more stressed out, feeling he must try to match Dumbledore's legacy of brilliant ACADEMIC & SCHOLARLY accomplishments (which clearly wasn't the direction of Harry's strengths).
3) By the time Harry is selected to be the youngest player in a century, Dumbledore is 100trs past his quidditch years. Dumbledore obviously enjoyed the Hogwarts matches and may have still followed the processional teams. Dumbledore, however, no longer personally had a passion for the game, only a nostalgic fondness. At his age and with all he's seen and been through its not clear to me, Dumbledore would even think this is something to share with Harry. I think after the 1sr Voldemort era wizard's war, Dumbledore saw the need to make his last great accomplishment destroying Voldemort.
The difference was this, Grindelwald by dark magic but also politics and the resentments wizards felt at the stifling secrecy acts, Grindelwald had the potential to motivate enough wizards to form an army.
Voldemort, even if he had no followers whatsoever; Voldemort could eventually grow powerful enough himself to be a danger to the whole world.
Just read Dumbledore's foreword in Qudditch through the ages to see if I could find anything to help. He is definitely into quidditch ( he makes a chudley Cannons joke ) But from what I can gather he's more of a Puddlemere United fan if anything. He doesn't mention playing Qudditch though
Since it's a school rule that first years can't have their own brooms, I always assumed they weren't allowed on quidditch teams either, so with that line about the youngest in a century I thought that was how long the rule had been in place. I bet there's a fun story of whatever happened to make them introduce the rule though!
BeeDoubleU That was my assumption too, but during my last read(listen)-through, in HBP, when Harry was team Captain and when Ron had to re-try-out for the keeper position, the first group to do the flying trials was a group of first years (who could barely fly anyways).

I also think that Harry would let them apply as he himself was given the chance and obviously McGonagall is happy to go against such rules as long as she gets the Quidditch Cup as seen by appointing Harry before there was even a try-out for the post!

I have a question that occupies me for some time:
It was already theorized that Hagrid's magical power would have been stronger than the average, hadn't he was framed by Tom Riddle and expelled from Hogwarts.
My question is why wasn't he cleared after the chamber of secrets? Why wasn't he pardoned after the defeat of Voldemort?
Furthermore, couldn't they just view Hagrid's memory in Dumbledore's pond to seek the truth?
I would appreciate if you could investigate this issue.

I have an alternate theory after digging around on the wiki for a bit!
To me, Albus being the other young seeker is a good theory, but is a bit too obvious and the evidence is a little bit too soft for me. Plenty of other witches and wizards use brooms in the books and films, but it doesn't necessarily mean ALL of them played quidditch. Besides a contending theory is always fun :D
So, what do we know?
To start with, I looked into teams that had a lot of success in the period of time after a student who attended Hogwarts in the 1890s would have GRADUATED and started playing quidditch professionally. So, roughly a window between 1897 and 1930, as after that point most athletes retire young due to physical strain. (To be fair I don't know much about wizarding athletes' career longevity). In the end I was looking for a seeker, who would have attended Hogwarts between 1890 and 1900, who was on a successful (likely british) team during that period preferably before 1930.
And I found someone! (The following is all information from the official wiki)
I found a player named Roderick Plumpton, born in 1889, meaning he would have began attending Hogwarts in 1900. He barely manages that decade window, but his definite skill in league competition could mean he was the young seeker! He played for the Tutshill Tornadoes (Cho Chang's favourite team btw) for their 5 consecutive British and Irish Quidditch League wins, and went on to play for the English National Quidditch Team! He invented the "Plumpton Pass" when he ended a match by catching the snitch in 3.5 seconds.
The guy sounds incredibly talented, and definitely sounds like a talented player, if not a prodigy! I believe that Roderick Plumpton was the other young seeker, as he would have been on a team 91 years before Harry was, therefore fitting into the loose century, he was incredibly talented, and he went on to become a very famous player. (He's in multiple HP video games as a famous wizard card!)
That's just my theory though, and if JK Rowling put any thought into who the young seeker was, I wouldn't be surprised if she picked Albus as the other seeker. Thanks for the cool video!

Agreed. We know Remus wasn't a Qudditch player and Tonks wasn't either, because she was too clumsy and both escorted Harry alongside Doge (Who was in the same year as Dumbledore and thus also fits the criteria), too Grimmauld Place. And while Kingsley escorted him as well, he rather flew on a Thestral than a Broom (Same way Dumbledore does when he wants too).

Does anyone else lose sleep thinking about how McGonogal “transfigured” the chess set to be larger and Flitwick “charmed” the keys to have wings?
Seems to me the chess set could have had an engorgement CHARM placed on it to become larger, and the keys would have had to be TRANSFIGURED into having wings.

The wings on the keys were like those found on birds, case and point: similar to when ron tried turning scabbers into a goblet but the goblet remained covered in fur and retained its tail

Another thing to support this theory is that Dumbledore was born in the summer! As Harry was born at the end of July and school years start in September, only people born in August could be younger than him and claim the title of youngest seeker. We don't know when exactly Dumbledore was born, but August is in the summertime!

this is a perfectly reasonable, even fairly clever, theory. But I'd point out one small detail: if Dumbledore played, that doesn't necessarily mean he was the Seeker. He could easily have played another position, and that in turn could raise some more interesting story possibilities.

This theory makes Dumbledore a complete “Marty Stu” (a male version of a Mary Sue).

i don't think Dumbledore to be considered Gary Stu type character his character type is Paragon. And paragon characters typically have to be like that in their own universes. For example Gandalf and Yoda are also Paragons. They are always or most of the time old, wise, morally good and powerful yet don't show that power very often their roles are mostly making the protagonist to thrive to be the hero of the story. So Dumbledore doesn't count.

Surprisingly Harry began to fly when he was very young, as during a flashback to him growing up he is seen flying a toy broomstick around his garden. This is evidence that he also knew how fly well, as practice makes perfect and this would make him so skilled. I believe this was during a flashback to the day Harry became the boy who lived.

A first-year getting on a house Quidditch team would be included - especially when it's Albus Dumbledore. Even if the book was written before Dumbledore became headmaster, his other accomplishments, including being a professor, would have ensured it.

Dumbledore starts first year on 1892 at hogwarts aged 11. Harry starts age 11, 99 years after. He died when Harry was 16. He died at the age of around 116? Is that correct?

Doge saying that he was winning every possible prize could have been just a hyperbole. In addition to that, Dumbledore stating the Chudley Cannon thingy could have been just a running joke in the magical community - a joke based on the fact that they seem to never win anything.

I like the theory, but saying that he chose to fly to London isn't applicable evidence. Hagrid tells us in Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix that Dumbledore rides the thestrals when he doesn't want to fly somewhere.

As broken noses are easily mended (as seen at the beginning of half blood prince) I think that when Aberforth broke his nose he didn't mend it out of shame. But is he broke his nose while playing quidditch it would have most likely been mended

Honestly, rewatching the films the last few days only gave me more questions about plot holes and impracticalities, like why does the Hogwarts grounds keep changing between films? How did "Moody" curse Krum before the fourth trial with nobody noticing? How did Dumbledore figure out that Moody was not Moody, where in the books he reacted to Moody-not-Moody leaving after Harry returning from V-dawg, something Moody-ACTUALLY-Moody would never do under the circum,stances, when nothing of the sort happened in the movie? After all these years, why can't Dumbledore just walk on the lake out to horcrux-not-horcrux? WHY didn't Hermione just keep the flipping horcrux-ACTUAL-horcrux IN her flipping BAG???

Well, I don't know when is Dumbledore's birthday. If it's before Harry's, Harry would be the new youngest player, if it's after Harry's, it would still be Dumbledore.

5:22 I love this theory, and I think it's true, but in the Order of the Phoenix, Hagrid says about thestrals, "...unless Dumbledore's takin' a long journey an' don' want ter Apparate..." I feel like he rode a thestral. Also, not all of the wizards would have been able to see it, because of the death thing.
I always thought that in Philosopher's Stone he traveled in the Thestrals... it is referred, in the fifth book, if I recall it correctly, that he uses them to travel when he doesn't want to apparate.
And regarding Dumbledore's Quidditch fandom, in Quidditch Through the Ages he mentions at the end of the foreword that he wishes "the best of lucks" (or sais this in my Spanish version) to the Pudlemere United, so its always been assumed that he supports them.
Something very interesting that I find about Dumbledore starting at Hogwarts about 100 (99 to be exact) years before Harry does, is that that would only make him live to about 115, unlike the 150 people usually seem to think he was. Something really sad about it is that this Dumbledore only lived about half of his life because wizards can usually live up to 200 years of age.

I always thought the rule that first years couldn't play was just put in a century ago, that Harry was the only exception, thus far.
In the beginning of the video I thought “ ok. Who is the one person that I know was alive a century ago and was a great student. Pfft! Who am I kidding? I don’t know anyone from that era except Dumbledore! So it must be Dumbledore”. And then you confirmed my random guess.

My day brightens every time you upload a video. Also Dumbledore was definitely the youngest quidditch player.
There is a painting of an unidentified gryffindor seeker in the gryffindor house. This may not seem like good evidence of Dumbledore being the last youngest player in a century, but the following gives me undeniable doubt that it is him, and that he was the youngest quidditch player in a century.
-The seeker clearly played a long time ago for Gryffindor
-They would only put up a painting of one of their quidditch players if he was somehow accomplished, like being the youngest player in a long time (assumed since of how long it took for there to be another one) and winning the house cup as talked about in the video
- He has red hair, easily mistaken for auburn, the color of young dumbledore's hair
- He is said to become the Head of Gryffindor house which Dumbledore later becomes
- And finally he uses the phrase "you barmy old codger" when describing another painting that stole his golden snitch, a phrase only used once more (as I know of) in the series, when Dumbledore tells dobby he can call him that.

Not sure if this counts but he is also very familiar with the snitches power. He hides the resurection stone in the snitch that Harry first caught and was clever enough to use that one so when he touched it nothing would happen... but while even Harmione knows about snitches having memory to touch and it is clear that hiding something in a snitch is not unheard of since she and the minister both expect something to happen, it is the snitch that he hides the stone in, and this is also the book where we find out about all of his similarities and connections to Harry like Godrics Hallow
