    Great video. You can use an offset woodruff key to correct a couple of degrees of stretch if you don't wanna deal with replacing the chain right now.

      @VITOSGARAGE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. I'll replace the chain. Putting a woodruff key is like covering up untreated wound. If it's stretched, it needs to be replaced.

      @urbanturbine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VITOSGARAGE Not really. Correction via offset is a factory approved method for certain amount of stretch. But of course changing is better.

      I agree with you. It will correct timing a few degrees. I have like 3-4 degrees and the chain is tired. I will replace it and it'll be good for another 200k☺

    That guide is not really worn out nor is the chain really worn out you just simply doing maintenance as it is needed.

    Do the tensioners, loose the ability to tighten ,after tightening the chain, Is that why sometimes they change the tensioner when they change the chain

    Wow i am surprised that they had any problems with the chains. Usually they dont have problems like these.

      Every car does. The chains on these cars need to be checked or replaced every 300k-400k miles or so. Chains stretch. It's still amazing how long they can last. This particular W123 has 329k miles but I am sure it's a lot more than that. Maybe 1 million miles, who knows.

    When replacing the timing chain, can you hook the new chain to the old chain and pull it through? Or, do you just have to take the front of engine apart and do it the long and hard way? Thanks

    • @VITOSGARAGE
      @VITOSGARAGE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Attach the new chain to the old one and pull it through. There's no front timing cover on this engine. That's why you have to pull it through🔨🔧🚗

    If it is loose then you replace both. Period. Look at the guides. If showing wear or are brittle you replace those also. As to the tensioner it has a one way ring that sits in grooves. This prevents it from backing off when there is no oil pressure.

    • @VITOSGARAGE

      Great idea! I agree!

    • @georgecurtis6463
      @georgecurtis6463 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may be ahead of myself. These older pensioners did not have a check ring and grooves. Just orings. If little wear, then the orings can be replaced. But still, best to replace the tensioner no matter what. Hey, what do you want from a 74 year old ? 😀

    Great video man, so you can get away with a few more miles by just replacing the tensioner??

    • @VITOSGARAGE

      New tensioner fixed timing chain looseness. However, you might need to replace your chain and guides

      @@VITOSGARAGE thanks, do you set the engine on Top Dead Center to replace the tensioner or is it not necessary?

    • @VITOSGARAGE
      @VITOSGARAGE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gprz843 I set it to TDC, change the tensioner and turn the engine over by hand, and then start it. Once you start it, let it run for a bit, shut it off, remove the valve cover and recheck the timing as well as make sure the chain is tight. If it’s not tight and if you can move it up and down on the cam sprocket, replace the chain and guides. You can do the valve adjustment while you’re there and you can change the valve cover gasket too

    Do you change the valve cover gasket every time you open up the engine? I just picked up a 79 and am going to take a look inside for the valve adjustments and to check the timing chain (any other suggestions welcome!) and of course my intention is to replace the gasket this time around. The car has a bad slave cylinder which needs to be replaced before it can be driven which is priority but while I’m working on it I want to check those items out and don’t want to have to replace the gasket every time I open up the engine if I don’t have to.

    • @VITOSGARAGE
      @VITOSGARAGE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you don’t have to replace the valve cover gasket every time you take off the valve cover. New valve cover gasket will last a super long time and will stay flexible.
      Check your timing chain for stretch while your valve cover is off and do the valve adjustment at the same time. It has to be done every 12-15k miles.
      Replace the main clutch cylinder at the clutch pedal while you replace the slave cylinder. Use good quality parts. Thanks for watching, I have lots of Classic car videos here. Please check them out🤝

    When you find that your chain has as much stretch as the one you showed, you need to roll in a new chain and all new guides before even starting the engine again. Recipe for disaster.
