    Setting profile to Superellipse 0.75 creates better holding edges and does a better job smoothing out the curvature. A bevel with a Superellipse 0.5 (fixed) radius goes from radius whatever to radius 0 as a sharp transition, whereas Superellipse 0.75 changes the radius from whatever to 0 gradually. Use zebra stripes Matcap to check the difference in how reflections flow.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried using 0.75 and I always find while it gives a good shading it isn't as realistic for hard surface/machined parts. So I try to avoid it.

    • @gottagowork
      @gottagowork ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ArtisansofVaul It depends what kind of machining. If it's very small and/or machined strictly wrt economy, then yes, round fillets will be used. If it's machine for esthetics (large shiny panels) or handgrip or something like that, more industrial/product design principles come into play. Those guys love G3 continuity but will sometimes allow G2 continuity, where G1 (tangent only) continuity is pretty much shunned upon.
      Note that what's machined isn't up to the machinist, but the drawings or model file given to them. But sure, they may sometimes go "wtf are those stupid engineers/designers thinking?" 🤣

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @gottagowork Lols. Thanks for what looks like a really expert level response (I can't say I know machining that well only what I see as a reference). I think your point about the ergonomics is really important as thinking about it your right? My laptop and handles probably are closer to that 0.75 bevel where as the legs on the table I'm at seem to be 0.5. I may do a video on that.... Its kind of pedantic but I love the way that level of detail and make something seem way more "real" when looking at a 3d design.

    7:28 About verts-on-verts: Auto-merge will prevent these from happening in the first place. It's that tiny toggle button next to "options". When enabled, every time a vertex has the exact coordinate as another one (when crashing into it, as I see it), it will automatically merge.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless something had changed since I last used it with a bevel auto-merge vertices doesn't work from bevels, only when moving or sliding verts into one another

    • @wyattblends7643
      @wyattblends7643 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Auto-merge didn't work on the bevel case for me either.

    because the ngon at the end triggered me a bit, you can take that face, inset it once, delete the inner face, select the edge and bridge fill. this will also create a face with the same orientation, its good quad topology, subdivides well and wont create render issues

    • @ArtisansofVaul

      Great tip if you need no ngons 👍🏻😁

    I like your idea of saving the circle at the top of the sphere.
    A long time a go- 2.?? I developed the habit of doing whole object scaling in edit mode and whole rotating in object mode to maintain the transform on the object. It's quick and easy to tab in or out of whatever mode, grab the manipulator and tab back to where you were. Sometimes, though, in complex processes that causes more trouble than it's worth. So I'll keep your trick in mind.

    Personally, for all bevels, arc, circles, ellipses etc. I like to use the number of segments that is a multiplier of 6, because it's both even and dividable into pairs and triplets. It's just more flexibility.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm... I'm not quite convinced as if you get to lower numbers it will cause issues as you can't go from 6 to 3 easily without impacting one of the holding edges. But if it works for you all good 👍🏻

    • @mipe7755
      @mipe7755 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArtisansofVaul Why not? If I have 6 edges and I wanna "loop down" to 3, I will use checker deselect and set "selected" to 2, while keeping "deselected" at 1 🙂

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @mipe7755 That's fair. I guess I wouldn't want to drop the number of segments to 1/3rd of what is was in one step most of the time. But if it works for you that's all good 👍🏻

    Bought messhmachine about two years ago and never touched it because it looked too complex. (I'm still recouperating from the 2.57 upgrade LMAO). If you're advertising for them... it's not working. Not that I regret buying. It's a lot of work and the maker(s) deserve a cup or two of tea, but I rather keep B3D vanilla.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm only "advertising" what I use. Mostly so I can do workflow videos as I would normally work and then refer to other videos covering how to use certain tools so the videos can be a reasonable length. If people don't feel inclined to use the workflow I do that's totally up to them/you. I think it's important in Blender to use what feels most comfortable for you. If you are ever tempted to use Mesh Machine (as you already have it, no sales pitch 🤣) I have a playlist breaking down how it works here: th-cam.com/play/PLnqmLZKRm5CbXvERNjPPdu7jvZ6eCQUxr.html

    I’m super new to Blender (and modeling in general) but I was wondering if there was a way to move the center position of the bevel? Almost like I want the deformed/un-applied scale. I’d want the bevel to be more on one side compared to the other, and I’m not sure I have the patience to run 1000 trials and error to find the correct un-applied scale. Is it really something only done in a customer profile setting?

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Ukioda For that I think the only way is to use the custom profile section. There are ways to manipulate it a bit using some tricks in combination with Mesh Machine (blendermarket.com/products/meshmachine/?ref=834) but that's quite a pricey addon if that's your only use for it.

    What's a good resource to learn how to model for 3D printing from start to finish?

    • @darrennew8211
      @darrennew8211 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Keep Making" on youtube has a playlist called "Precision Modeling" that does exactly this. Starts with "here's how to install blender" and "this is what a vertex is" and continues on till you're fully competent. That's for hard-surface. If you want stuff like wargaming figurines or sculptures or some such, you'd then need to find other resources, but you'll have the basics.

    Enjoying your videos.. a printer's perspective is just that bit different from a renderer's.
    Something I hadn't noticed before you made me look... a geekily annoying inconsistency between Align View, which aligns to the *active* element in Edit Mode, and Custom Transform Orientation, which doesn't. If you can arrange for your selection to have no active element, though, by selection method or . eg. , switching edges to verts, they're the same.. any 3 vertices make a plane, or 2 make an edge.
    It's nice to have, but you don't need to keep your face to align to.. You could Shift-7 align to the normal of your active pole-vertex, if there was one, or Shift-1 down any edge. or Shift-3 to view the edge abeam.. etc.. all worth checking out, for speed, IMO.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  ปีที่แล้ว

      All good points, especially using the vert on the top to align to. I just find the shift 7 option faster for making quick tweaks.
