This was the beginning of my music era. The Motown hit machine started in the early 1960s when I was in elementary school, and you told me so much l didn’t know already. Shout out to you for this musical history lesson.
Your right on point with your comment, David carried the temptations through the early 60's era and then it was Dennis who carried them through the mid to late 60"s era and into the 70"s which was totally different music scheme, that's why to me I have never compared the 2 of them.
@@gregoryingram7561 Definitely!!! Then you have Ali-Ollie Woodson who carried them thru most of the 80s & some of the 90s. Treat Her Like A Lady is that jam that lit the 80s on fire for them.

Thank you so much for this video. It’s interesting how David had a chance to be back in the group and couldn’t follow through. I sometimes wonder how their “Psychedelic Soul” era would have been had he still been there. But Dennis’ voice fitted perfectly with that music.
Fun fact: David never said the line "ain't nobody coming to see you otis". It was a add on by Leon and the director of the movie didn't like it at all and eventually gave in not knowing it would become a classic line from that day forward.
Great Job Young Man…..I grew up in this era…..I must say to know how popular they were--U had to experience it…….They made 2 hit Christmas albums! Legends…….
Otis had said in his book, the reason why they picked David over Jimmy is because David was a better dancer. Jimmy had two left feet. But to me, either way it would have been good but I'm glad they picked David. David had that begging soulful type of voice where you can tell he was really into the words. He could really Express himself through the music.
It was also said that right from the beginning Jimmy wanted a solo career and that's another reason why he rejected the lead singer part, it should be also noted it was Jimmy ruffin who told the temptations that his brother was also a heck of singer and would probably fit well with the group.
@@ducknoff6975 I'm not surprised. His ego wouldn't allow him to admit that. He always made himself to be more than he actually is talent wise and morally as well. He dated many Motown girls
"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" Marvin Gaye's version was actually written for The Temptations, and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" was actually written for Marvin Gaye as "Please Don't Leave Me, Girl".

Sorry for your loss sweetheart, my mother passed away two years ago. I'm 73, one of my fondest memory of her (we had 45's and a record player), was seeing her dance to the Temptations record...Beauty's only skin Deep. TO THE NARRATOR OF THIS DOCUMENTARY YOU DID A MARVELOUS JOB ON THIS STORY THERE WERE A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAPPENED THAT WAS NOT IN THE MOVIE THANK YOU FOR EXPONDING ON THAT
So good. I fell in love with Eddie at 5 yrs old. David was a great singer, even as a solo artist. But I don’t think he would’ve fit with their psychedelic sound. Dennis’ voice overpowered everyone in the group. But Whitfield found a way to make it work. My favorite was “Ball of Confusion”. That song was like church to me and I would play it everyday when I got up and testify to it at only 9 years old. Funny how that song still resonates in 2024!
Brotha there's not much more you can add to their story, they were the best even at their worst but they still deserve to be a part of musical history 🥰❤️🖤💚and yes both sets of them🥰❤️🖤💚
fine, but they should be distinctly broken into The Original Temptations and Temptations 2 much like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes Dells-imitating should be broken out of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergast;

This was highly informative! Great research and amazing job! I had no idea that there were so many inaccuracies in the biopic. I wasn't even born during the Temps heyday, but I still love the group at its early music.
Yeah I didn't either until years later I did my own research. I can't stand liars. Otis will hopefully be called to the carpet for him scandalizing his fellow brothers names
This was fantastic bro. You shared a lot of info I never knew. Fame, fortune, ego and tragedy seemed to envelope these talented brothers. Still they are the BEST EVER...
The temptations was is and always be the greatest group ever. In every combination of the temptations was top shelf . I feel that Richard Street is one of the best vocalist ever, even though he didn't get that recognition, he was outstanding. They all were. There probably would be no baby boomers without the temps.

I'm so thankful to listen to The Four Tops and The Temptations that I became their fan forever. No one knows what makes a group famous. I believe Heavenly Father wanted the Temptations to give a performance that is still strong today. You covered a lot of history here....bro. I missed a lot because I left the fan box when David left. I kept track of the many changes in the news. As I'm older and wiser now I realize changes take place. Regardless you captured a lot of history here. This is part of the sound track of my life. Keep bringing it. I'm even picking up on people I never heard of, but I heard the songs by them. I've often said that Rock and Roll should be a college course today. You are proving that it would be interesting. This is part of our culture.
I lost track. David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks are the two names that spell out Temptations for me. May the group and those two rest in peace. Even their biggest fans are dying of old age.
This was a wonderful documentary. I love the Temptations and Paul Williams and David Ruffin are my favorites. I wish Otis would have let Paul back on the group.

Me too Paul was my man. But I understand Otis Paul wasn't able to with him having Sickle Cell and drinking just didn't mix.. Paul became a Alcoholic like Al was.
Otis knew how sick Paul was, that's the only reason he didn't take Paul back, but he got royalties from everything they made, even when he wasn't with them. THAT'S LOVE.
I worked at this building in the late 1980's cleaning offices in the evenings, so I worked with this young lady for a few months. She did one part of the huge building and I did the other part, so one night we were just talking about life and a lot of things and don't remember how we got on this subject, but we started talking about the temptations for some reason, and she told me that Dennis Edwards was her father!! And Dennis was always my favorite singer in the group, so I was shocked!!!! I said to her for real?? He's your father girl?? She said yes...I'll show you my birth certificate tomorrow....I said ok. And when I took a look at her, she really did resemble him a lot. She brought it and yes it stated that he's the father😅. I never forgot that night, she told me a lot that night about her life with him. Yes, I'll always remember her working with me. She was very nice and funny as well.😂
While David Ruffin was the lead singer. The Grammys weren't giving black soul groups the nominations. It took a act of Congress for them to get nominated. So the Grammy they won was the result of civil rights frfr.😊

Wow what an incredible brilliant job. Of putting so much correct information and history. On this group yeah my grandmother told us years ago. That one of The Temptations members is our cousin. A rollercoaster of events and emotions. Well thank you and keep blessed.
This is my group ya'll, listen, I have just about every Temps album then and CD now- except Meet The Temptations, Temptations Greatest Hits, Temptations Live!, Together Diana Ross & The Supremes w/The Temptations, Greatest Hits, Vol 2, and 1990. I can still remember some of the house parties in the '60s and the classmate of the house where the party was given would play the Temptations song "You'll Lose a Precious Love, with Melvin very subtly in the background. Then, "Darlin' Baby" by the Elgins would follow., leading up to "It's gonna take a Miracle" by The Royalettes... not Denise Williams version which is excellent as well. And who could forget Billy Stewart's "Sitting in The Park"! Boy oh boy, you talk about some slow jams, pretty girls, and fun- Now, those were the days my friend; a great time to be young and in high school! And yes, I'm in me 70s a grandfather now... with memories, sweet memories!
I really love Your video. It is very refreshing to hear the story of The temptations it brings Sunshine into my life please keep up the good work love Jean Moore Woods
Thank you for this. For anyone who disagrees the Temptations are the greatest, both of their classic lineups (David, Eddie, Paul, Otis, Melvin - or- Dennis, Eddie, Paul, Otis, Melvin) have 4 lead singers. No need to take my word, go through the discography. Let that sink in 4 lead singers. (Otis would be the non-lead singer, despite being the group "leader".) All 6 of them are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And before the Jackson 5, the Temptations were the group who mastered dancing. The other legendary stars whom you all know were great singers, but only the Temptations put it together with the visual show as well. No superlatives are enough for the Temptations. Thank you for shining your spotlight on them! One more thing, I didn't know Paul Williams was a Cancer like me. Sure explains a lot. Super talented, smart, sensitive, and troubled. Smh that's us!!

Yes, this group was a renewal of spirit because they were able to collaborate with each member through trials and tribulations. We all are subjected to Temptations and may want to be divisive but in Unity their is Strength and I believe that the combination of Perseverance provides inner strength and Versatility 😊😮 Promoting Success and Well earned Respect in the History of Music 😄🎶
I read that Paul wound up drinking the way he did because he had Sickle Cell Anemia and alcohol numbed the pain from his illness.
@@DVPerry220David was the one that encouraged Paul to drink. He was not a drinker prior to that. And from what I know Eddie didn't mess with drugs prior to David either. So, while David had his issues he should have just left the other 2 alone.
You did a FANTASTIC JOB on the Temptations story! The way you deliver your craft is outstanding 👏 keep up the good work.
This was the beginning of my music era. The Motown hit machine started in the early 1960s when I was in elementary school, and you told me so much l didn’t know already. Shout out to you for this musical history lesson.
I feel that each lead singer in the group brought a different style & sound to the group.
I will never understand how I want a love I see with Paul on lead was not a massive hit. Love that song!!!
SERIOUSLY !!!! I play it now when cruising in my car, I'm 73 and still love his singing. I WANT A LOVE I CAN SEE, THAT'S THE ONLY KIND OF LOVE TO GIVE TO ME. Whew ! gettin hot in here !
Thank you so much for this video. It’s interesting how David had a chance to be back in the group and couldn’t follow through. I sometimes wonder how their “Psychedelic Soul” era would have been had he still been there. But Dennis’ voice fitted perfectly with that music.
I totally agree 👍
Amen
They gave Ruffin a second chance on a trial period, they didn't actually trust him,it was almost like they expected him to mess up again 🤷🏾♂️
Fun fact: David never said the line "ain't nobody coming to see you otis". It was a add on by Leon and the director of the movie didn't like it at all and eventually gave in not knowing it would become a classic line from that day forward.
@itty that’s true David never said that line no body coming to see you Otis that was a add on
❤
I love that Leon adlibbed that remark. It was the truth.
Hilarious bc Otis was the worst dancer before Ruff got in the group.
@@ducknoff6975 I'm not surprised. His ego wouldn't allow him to admit that. He always made himself to be more than he actually is talent wise and morally as well. He dated many Motown girls
It was stated that Eddie and Otis were the worst of the 5 that's why they were always in the back while doing there routines
"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" Marvin Gaye's version was actually written for The Temptations, and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" was actually written for Marvin Gaye as "Please Don't Leave Me, Girl".
This came across my timeline my grandmother and David Ruffin are first cousins she has told me many stories and shown me photos you did a great job on this !
You must be from around Lauderdale / Clark County.

Being 70 years young. Man the Temting Temtations was my all time favorite grounp.Man they were the best ever.

In defense of David Ruffin from people who depicted him as arrogant and egotistical. I must say the few times I had the opportunity to be in his presence he presented himself to be very cordial and a Gentleman. R.I.E.H.P. Mr.Ruffin.This was true of the rest of the Temptations that I had the pleasure to encounter as well. Temptations Forever.

You forgot to mention the most important arranger of all times, Paul Riser, who arranged all the successful songs, specially the heavily orchestrated, like Papa was a rolling stone, Masterpiece and soi on, always overlooked.
You are so very right. Paul Riser is an INTEGRAL part of the success formula of WHY Motown Records was so successful at all.
💡
It's sad Otis still alive and the original are gone besides Otis just strange music business is shady .
Paul is definitely not given the kudos he deserves he was
main the brains of the group! Died of very questionable circumstances.
So many hits including four #1s!
• My Girl (1965)
• I Can’t Get Next to You (1969)
• Just My Imagination (1971)
• Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone (1972)
That was an amazing cover of one of the most famous groups in America. ❤ I had the pleasure of meeting the Temps in 1982. The Temps has always had outstanding lead singers. It’s wonderful that they are still blazing the trails today in 2022. 😍
Wow, you were lucky. 🙂
Thank you for using the clips from the biopic. This will make it easier for people who don't know the story to visualize it better. Great video!!

Damn. When you realize that when you watch the 🎬, it's only a piece of what really happened. I didn't know it was so deeper than that.
Yeah the TV movie WAS TRASH AND FULL OF LIES. I HATE Otis for him messing up each member's image except himself and his best friend
I GOT TO GIVE IT TO YOU , YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I PLAYED FIRST TRUMPET WITH TYRONE DAVIS , THE EMOTIONS , AL GREEN AND JACKIE WILSON. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK 👍
Wow, you're a living Legend yourself !
No matter who was in or out the temptations group they where and still today the greatest of all time. Old music will always out number todays music. Old music had love , character, an dedication compared todays music of drugs ,guns, an women being called out there names
I really like this narrator. ALSO you can tell by how the TV movie got down that Otis was VERY jealous of his band mates... ESPECIALLY David, Eddie and Paul. Thank you for clearing THE LIES from the TV movie
The Temptations are not Band. They are a Vocal group.
THE TEMPTATIONS ARE A VOCAL GROUP NOT A BAND
The Temptations one of my favorite group ❤💛💙💜 I still play their music today
Thank you for letting me know what happened to Bo Harrington. I was so in love with his voice, especially with the song "This is my promise❤".
I LOVED MY GIRL I USED TO SING IT TO MY MOM WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD EVERY TIME I HEAR THIS SONG I JUST CRY MY MOM PASSED AWAY.
Sorry for your loss sweetheart, my mother passed away two years ago. I'm 73, one of my fondest memory of her (we had 45's and a record player), was seeing her dance to the Temptations record...Beauty's only skin Deep. My father ( who couldn't dance to anything but slow music,) would sit and watch her shaking his head. 😅
TO THE NARRATOR OF THIS DOCUMENTARY YOU DID A MARVELOUS JOB ON THIS STORY THERE WERE A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAPPENED THAT WAS NOT IN THE MOVIE THANK YOU FOR EXPONDING ON THAT
My FAVORITE GROUP of all time!! Omg had no idea about Patty and Otis 😳 this was very well done! Thank you!
Brotha there's not much more you can add to their story, they were the best even at their worst but they still deserve to be a part of musical history 🥰❤️🖤💚and yes both sets of them🥰❤️🖤💚
fine, but they should be distinctly broken into The Original Temptations and Temptations 2 much like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes Dells-imitating should be broken out of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergast;
@@dreemeagle l hear what you are saying and l respect what you are saying however both sets of groups blended with the originals so they all should be saluted or call them by name for example Eddie Kendricks was my favorite Temptation even though l loved them all and Teddy Teddy Teddy was my favorite one out of the Blue Notes🥰❤️🖤💚and l love them all too, I'm a music major and l realized that there are many substitutes in groups for whatever reason but once you love the group you love the group or at least l do🥰❤️🖤💚l love my singing sistas and brothas🥰❤️🖤💚

This was an outstanding presentation. Thank you for the preservation of our history.
The temptation were truly a legend, I still listen to their music and go straight down memory lane.
And what a walk that is. me too.

Profile in Pittsburgh Allegheny County PA this was such an informative video about The Temptations. I was blessed to meet Otis Williams and the group in 2018 at Heinz Hall, downtown Pittsburgh PA.
So true. "Changes take place." It happens in the history of all of your favorite acts. And of course, in life itself.
Eddie Kendricks: just my Imagination, there is Temptations songs and sounds that each person made their own.

Regardless of how he felt, Paul wasn't physically able.

Then, "Darlin' Baby" by the Elgins would follow., leading up to "It's gonna take a Miracle" by The Royalettes... not Denise Williams version which is excellent as well. Your video.
Great job! This is my all time favorite group and I know a lot about them. You’re a awesome researcher, and I learned something new. Thanks for sharing!😊
