Makes you realise how good the A7III considering how it’s competing toe to toe with the A7RIV for a much cheaper price. If you do landscapes or need the extra pixels get the 4. If you do video and photography get the A7III
Yeah performance wise I would say they are pretty much on the same playing field!
Even for landscapes, I would find it hard to find the need for the extra resolution on most days.
The advantage of the R4 and by far the best use case for it is on cropping. If you shoot small birds you will often find that you cannot get close enough to them to fill the frame even with 600mm-900mm or more. They still end up as small on a FF sensor. The R4 allows you to crop to ridiculous amounts and still get great details. You add that setup to Topaz Denoise and you have something that it truly special. You cannot get that with the A7III or A9 with their 24MP sensors
Wax Wings Photo yeah it is overkill but as the gent above me has said it’s useful if you want to crop your images. Also a lot of landscape photographers have prints which they sell so the higher megapixel count helps with the print quality
Do you think that if I wanted to shoot jewelry, the A7RIV would be better since it has more pixels?
I'm actually surprised at how good the a7riv handles noise in low light, I was expecting heavier grain. This was awesome comparison video :)
Well at this price range...lol
Honestly same!! And thank you, so glad you enjoyed it!
honestly I have an r4, and its not very good. Im not impressed with the iso. Literally I wouldn't go past 3200 if I had to. Also 120 fps is crap, this is my first mirrorless, and im not very impressed with the $3.5k camera
@@joshlizee Have one too, and I am very happy with the results. For low light I use my A9ii usually, but the A7RIV is not that bad either but 61MP is 61MP and make a bit of a difference - of course.
@@djedje5750 ikr lol
My main reason to use the A7RIV(after owning the A7R, A7RII) as a professional photographer is, that I love to work with prime lenses. The A7R4 gives me the flexibility to crop my shots in edit. And I mainly take pictures of people and rarely of landscape. So often I am super happy to have the extra pixels to go for that composition correction I am looking for without losing the quality. In low light photography the camera is still super amazing (especially with the prime lenses) and some quick and easy correction in Lightroom (when needed) does the rest. Of course there are the otherbenefits of the A7RIV I am not going into detail now. For filming in low light however I would love to have the A7RIII... Let me know your thoughts on that!
It's amazing where camera tech is going. The A7R iv is beyond incredible and the iii is not far behind. In fact the iii was way ahead of its time. The next 5 years is going to be fun with Canon & Nikon upping their mirrorless game.
First off greetings from Cleveland, OH here in the States! Secondly, LOVE LOVE your accent. I’ve been watching your videos for almost 2 years now, as I just got into photography about 3 years ago. I currently have a A7RIII and am ready to upgrade to the A7RIV and just bought the A7C as my new B/second camera. I liked the A7RIII, but the A7RIV is insane! It just FEELS like a real pro level camera. I have played around with the A73 and while it’s good, I do a lot of model photography for my magazine, so resolution is key. Anywho, love your content and you are AMAZING to watch and listen to. Cheers!
Thank you so much Julia, very helpful and informative comparative review! Good luck with your photography journey!
Your voice with the camera's together is something else 😍🥰
How are you recording the audio? 😍
I decided to trade in my A7III for a A7RIV a few weeks ago, one thing I have noticed that the shutter noise is quieter (dampen) with the A7RIV, and the dials feel much better to operate less and less clunky and more dampen on operation. The A7RIV feels a higher quality camera than the A7III altogether. I also agree that the memory slot operation is harder to use. (No chance of any accidental opening of the flap with the A7RIV.) So I am extremely happy with the trade up.
Aw nice! One thing I noticed after we filmed this video is that I really preferred what the A7R4 feels like in the hands. Since during this day it was mostly on a tripod I didn't really have a comment about it, but since then I have done a few portrait photoshoots on it and it's just so much more comfortable to hold!
Is it worth the $1000 difference?

Exactly what I wanted to know in a comparison! Great breakdown and practical demo. Thank you both for being our ninjas!
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Excellent work
Hey, Julia! I really love your photography! It gives me more idea on how to shoot my own pictures even though Im using my phone. 💙
Thank you so much that makes me so happy to hear 😄
I was waiting for this comparaison from a long time thank you for doing this video ! Awsome videos 🤗
Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it!
Love your comparison videos! they're always very interesting. And your smile is so gorgeous!!
Thank you so much!
Great comparison. You really talked about everything that really matters. Not going off of a spec sheet. Learnt a lot. Thank u. Like everyone else mentioned, the audio is super clear.
I always watch your videos before I upgrade. I’m choosing between these two right now!
Lucky lady getting your hands on the A7Riv! I've just upgraded my R2 to the R3; as much a I wanted the r4, I was worried that 61MP was too much for me!
It would be cool to compare the 4 to the 3 in a similar video like this actually!
@@juliatrotti waiting for it since I chose r3 over r4 due to cost and larger file sizes.
I found this channel today ✌✌ the "hey everyone " was so good😜 i saw it on repeat 😊
Nicely done. Your comparison's were simple and straight forward. Easily understood for the average joe. Even people on my home planet could understand this....As always, keep up the good work and Keep'em flying. Now, where did I park that saucer?
Ahahaha thank you!
Awesome video, will sure help a lot of people! I am a full time photographer and had both the A73 and A7RIV and ended up selling the A73 to have a combo of the A9 and A7R, my dream combo!
Thank you so much! And yeah that sounds like a great combo 😄
The comparison is very good 👍 I love it ❤ thank you for sharing this video 😊
Nice comparison
Really you give good information
Thanks a ton!

Very thorough review and appreciate it. Now I’m using A7iii with 70200GM and happy with it. Thanks for your review
Well done, publishing. The video is very beautiful and useful. I subscribed to your channel and I like the video
Thank you very much!
JULIA FOR THE GODS SAKE WHAT MIC DID YOU USE IN THIS VIDEO???? It was a lavalier one? Did you treat in post? What a perfect audio, jeez! It even sounds like you're in an interior with sound foams or something, what the hell
I was literally searching for comparison and I got a post notification 😂😅..Nice video.
Anita Sadowska has also done one but this is more formal of a comparison which is super useful. I oddly have both cameras 😭😭😭 and haven't touched the r4 at all yet
Hahaha I guess I'm a mind reader 😂
I recently subscribed and love your to the point videos. And you have a nice smile. just saying.
I absolutely love your videos! Your audio is so clear. Do you mind sharing what mic & voice recorder you use? Thanks a bunch and keep the vids coming!
Great video Julia! Due to the higher pixel density, I wasn´t expecting the A7RIV to really compete with the A7III, but that being said, at base ISO they´re both equally great. As you start to bump the ISO it becomes more evident all the advantages of having the bigger photodiodes that come with the 24 megapixels of the A7III. So basically, if you´re going to be shooting in a more controlled environment (Architecture, Studio, Landscape) where you can take your time and choose the settings that you want I think that the A7RIV becomes a better option, especially if you take in account the other features of the camera, better EVF (5.69 million dots on the A7RIV vs 2.4 million dots) better screen, better built quality and weather sealing... but if the conditions where you shoot are not always under your control and you want the cleanest possible results, then the A7III is still the one to beat. Keep up the good work and stay safe! Greetings from Scotland! :)
Thank you and yes absolutely! You hit the nail on the head. The A7III is great for me with my wedding photography as a lot of the day is fast paced/out of my control/lots of different lighting situations, the A7R4 would be great for travelling with!
Excellent work. I was looking for this video for long.
Thank you!
That RIV has so much clarity even when zoomed in, been using the A7III for some time and I was pleased enough with it. Though seeing this comparison leaves me wanting that extra MPs. I guess ignorance really is bliss... :)
Yeah the 4 is something else! For me I don't really need all that extra resolution with portraits, butttt it would be nice while travelling 😅
Julia Trotti: indeed! Though, I’m curious as to how smooth was the editing process for them R4 files, i think the computer will struggle a bit? I am using a 2019 macbook pro with 8gb ram only for editing, for the a7iii filesizes it is handling fine so far.. as a landscape photographer, that extra mps from the RIV would really help to create some flexibility in the composition 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Julia, helpful! Please continu, your videos are a joy to watch. Very positive vibe :)
First of all!! What microphone do you use?? the audio is sooo good
second!! thank youuuu for this great review.. i was so confused which one to buy.. now i got the answer
Your audio from the lav is really impressively matched to your studio mic.
Waiting for her response ..
Thank you! Dan is in charge of all the audio stuff and he does an amazing job!
Rode Go I think man!
Cool video, yeah I'm thinking about picking up a used A7III, looks fun. Thanks for the comparison.
Thanks for watching!
Great video. The only thing which isn't quite right, in my humble opinion, is the last ISO test showing which camera handles noise the best. The A7RIV image should have been downscaled to the same size of the A7III. Only after you do that you can really see the difference. Otherwise it's an apples to oranges comparison.
I got to play with some A7RIV raw files and the shadow noise is very bad if you do any type of grading whatsoever at even moderate ISO's.
Thank you! Yeah there have been a few comments with the ISO test. Just for some clarity: I shot the low light portraits from a tripod so the 3 and 4 images look identical zoomed out. Then when you're looking at noise/sharpening in an image, etc it's generally best to look at it at 100% so you can really see what's happening, so I included them in the video at 1:1 for that reason. With the extra resolution of the 4 it does look like I cropped it in even more, but they are both being viewed at 1:1. Next time I'll try to include both versions of the comparison instead!
LOVE LOVE LOVE your comparison videos. So creative and helpful!
Thanks so much!
Thanks. Comparo is the way to go.
Compared with the A7R III, both Gordon Laing in his TH-cam review of the IV and the Sony Alpha Blog test of lenses for the IV show that any resolution advantage is lost to noise at ISO 800 and above. That's going to compromise a lot of available light shooting.
Thanks julia for providing this info
Nice video!! Now we need waiting for the A7IV soon!
Thank you and yesss, I can't wait for that!
What a lovely photographer ❤️👍🏽
yes, my idol :) the beauty, modesty, soft tone while speaking, and most importantly her high photography skills. Even my wife understands that i'm crazy about Julia Trotti :)
Hey Julia, great video! Helped me make my choice between the two (that and the major price difference). I was just wondering, what your tripod and monitor setup is, it looks sharp!
Hi Julia! im a big fan of your photography and videos. Ive become very interested in the canon m50 camera, I know is a very popular camera and I wonder if you ever use it or plan to make a video with it. I would love to see your especific take on it, specially on photography, anyways love this video, happy quarantine!
Thank you so much! I haven’t used that camera yet but if I can get my hands on it I would absolutely love to make some videos about it - I’ll see what I can do!

Heyy Julia I fall in love 😍😍 with you after watching your evey another video( including this one😀)....they are very informative and interesting..I want to ask you a question as I have to buy my very first camera and I am not a professional photographer, just developed the interest in photography in recent years so should I purchase the a7 mark III or anything else ... Love ❤️ from INDIA
Thanks! I wonder if A7III vs A7RIII would be similar. Great comparison, highly appreciated!
Very nice video. I also own the Sony a7III and I'm happy this is still a very strong camera that will be relevant for a few more years to come. I loved the video.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for the review! As always, the correct comparison)
From myself I will say that the A7-3 is an ideal camera in terms of price and quality. That is, if you have about 3.5-4 thousand dollars for a photo kit, then the A7-3 is the camera where you get all the functions for a good price, and invest the rest of the money in lenses.
I really look forward to the A7-4, with improved display quality, larger buttons and other minor improvements)
Excellent video and comparison. Would it be possible to compare the A7iii vs the A9 mark ii ?
this is new, you're doing gadget comparison now. hehehe you're my favorite portrait photographer ma'am. great video as usual ... keep it up
Thank you! Haha I've always done lens/camera reviews and comparisons on my channel 😄

Glad you like them!
I was wondering which one to buy. Thanks for this great video. I will save some money and get the A7III
Glad I could help!
Thank you for this. Very useful 😊
your audio is amazing !
Please please please make a video like this one comparing a7riv vs canon ros r5
Sony a6600 vs Canon EOS 90D. Will get the a6600 around August. a7 3 Sony New Zealand charges NZ$4,000 for and that excludes a lens which costs another $1,000. Don't get me started how much the charge for the A7 4.
Great honest comparison! Thank you
What Ninja model is that in your video?
I recently picked up an A7iii. I was really pleased at the improvements over the A7ii. I love the idea of the extra resolution in the A7Riv, but don't feel like I've missed out in terms of practical capability.
Yeah there are some big improvements between the A72 and 3!
Ergonimics are WAY WAY better on the A74. I made the mistake of holding one just recently. Better grip, better AF button to name a few. If you use gloves and shoot in the winter, it can be pretty frustrating shooting with the A73. I've frozen my fingers off quite a few times in order to really "feel" the A73 dials
Great comparision! Direct to the point!
Thank you!
I love all your vídeos julia. I think i´m convinced that when i have a chance, i will switch from Canon to Sony. Sony was always and is a good brand. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I'm glad I can help :) I would love to do a Sony vs Canon video like this in the future if I can borrow the EOS R again, would be fun to see the differences there because the R was great when I had the chance to use it too.
@@juliatrotti please compare with nikon z6 too Julia
@@juliatrotti do you have the a7 s3 yet??
I was very much interested in high ISO noise handling in both cameras. The side by side is most helpful! Thank you !
nice comparison! thank you! Hope the A7RIV goes on sale in the coming months T_T
Thanks for the comparison.... I am considering to purchase A7III compare to Z6II.. since you are Sony person any recommendations from Sony or am I good with A7III. I am new to photography so I don't want to spend too much hence I am looking for the medium range which is why Z6ii and A7iii is same price point but Sony is much older than Nikon. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks Shashi
Good review. Wish you'd done some video comparisons while you had them.
Thank you and same! I was thinking of using it again soon though so we’ll definitely do some video when I do 😄
Hey, Thanks for the comparison. I think I will stick to my A7iii too.
2 hours ago I randomly find this video on Instagram search posts, and now I randomly clicked on this video on youtube. What a coincidence :D
Man that audio is great!
Right? Super milky
APS-C resolution for telephoto reach is better with the A7R4 26mp vs 10mp. I still have my A7R2 for high res needs and A73 for speed/ low light.
Nice video!! What mic do you use??? It’s so clean n crisp
This was SO helpful - thank you! ☺️
Nice video 👌🏻 I can only afford either the A7rii or the A7III. Which would you go for?
Which one do you think I should go for wildlife photography?
A7iii with the 200-600mm G lens.
If you have the money then R4, if you shoot birds the R4 has improved auto focus, it has larger size files in both crop mode and full mode, you can crop the picture still retain the clarity advantage over A7 Mk3, I use R3 and I do find the larger file size and extra resolution give it an advantage in bird photography because you will crop as birds is so small when you look at the whole picture.
Question How does the a7riv do in low light ? I know it does well for photos but because of the 61 megapixel sensor I would imagine that would be a bad thing for videos.
Thanks for great review. I am confused between these two cameras, thanks to your video, it helped clearing some points. I need to pick one of these for Astro photography and wildlife photography. Which one should I pick? Thanks again.
The card door slides out that way because of the weather resistance. There is more sealing added to the a7riv which is similar to canon cameras. Most other Sony models do not have a robust build like the a7riv.
May I ask which part of Australia you from? Weather looks lovely as always in all your videos haha
I'm from Sydney! To be fair we have a lot of bad weather too, I just choose to go out and shoot when it's a good day for it 😄
Hi Julia. Thank you for this video. It is very helpful choosing between that 2 cameras. May I ask? What tripod are you using on this video?
I have the Sony A7III. The only thing I envy about the A7RIV is the ability to crop in more on the photos for post production, and something most "people" fail to mention is the Sony A7RIV has no video record time limit.
Yeah I feel like being able to crop in shots would be really helpful at weddings sometimes, but I don't know if my wallet would forgive me for how many hard drives I would need to be able to keep up with that workflow 😅
wonderful video as always - been wondering if I would get the a7r3 or the a7riv have the a73 and love it - so wonder if a new a7 iv is coming this summer - I agree on resolution - 24-42 MP enough - 24mp for portraits and weddings - 42 enough for landscape -
Dan super good with the video work
Mmmm I would be super excited about an A74 announcement!!! And thank you :)
_Julia, you are an incredible photographer_
Thank you 💛
Wow!! That’s an awesome video review!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so much!
Julia Trotti Soo happy to see your reply! I have a quick question; I have 85mm and 24-70 g master Lens... which third lens do u suggest???
Great review. This time your video quality looks very good compared to previous videos. Which camera and lens was used to shoot this video?
Exactly the same as always.
Thank you so much! Yep as Dan said same camera and lens as always, Sony A7sii and Sigma 18-35
Great review
I think a7R4 61mp has no use in your workflow but the improved af tracking is useful. Hope to see a7iv soon settling at 30-36mp with all handling and usability improvements.
Yeah I agree, for portraits it's probably a bit too much for me, but it would be verrry nice to have this camera while travelling!
The a7r4 are more noise beacuase it was zzom out well than a73 just try to compare in size of photos what are the result, i have this 2 camera but i did not compare the of each camera
Thanks again for such a brilliant video
Thank you so much!
I buyed the A7III instead of the A7RIII (same price) for the 24 mpx, with good lens the results are very high with light files!
Bought ☺
Vidimmi si capisci chist, sorca
A7iii does not have as much mpx as the Riii
Natr scem
1:19 into the video very eloquent but I hit subscribe because of the accent. Might have to rewatch not really paying attention anymore just enjoying your voice. ☺️
merci pour cet essai très intéressant. Je suis ravi de mon A7III... le seul gros manque sur le A7III comparé au A7RIV, c'est la détection de l'œil en continu en Vidéo....
I'm glad you liked it! I think you can see from this video though that the A7III eye af continuous still pretty much keeps up with the R4, and this test was done without giving the camera any help whatsoever lol we were just letting it do all the work to see how well they would perform. Usually I keep a small focus point on the subject's eye/face in case the eye AF fails.
@@juliatrotti a pity that sony does not implement eye tracking in video on the A7III with a firmware update ....
in photo mode it's already very appreciable ...
Excellent comparison, thank you! As for future comparisons, many people are agonizing over the A7R3 vs A7R4 -- even Tony & Chelsea argue about it! (Essentially some view the 61mp as a drawback that slows down processing without providing meaningful benefit). Anyway that would be a great comparison to show us, especially the impact on Lightroom and Photoshop processing time. QUESTION: In the low light autofocus test it LOOKED like both cameras were finding the eye quickly in the viewfinder but it sounds like when you actually looked at the images, few of them were really in correct eye autofocus. Did I hear you correctly?
Also please be careful of the "shutter priority mode" menu entry, as I find that choosing "shutter priority" on the Sony is more reliable than choosing "balanced" which is the default.
Finally there is a "focus tracking" mode that typically does better for moving objects than the standard AFC.
In general, when you show us an autofocus test please tell us which mode you are using.
Thank you.
Thank you so much and I would absolutely love to make a comparison video with the R3 & 4! With your question, yep that's why I wanted to do an eye AF speed test, and an eye AF focus accuracy test. A lot of time it looks like eye AF has got it down pat, but when you start taking photos it's not actually focusing correctly which was very apparent in the low light tests especially! During the day both cameras did a good job in the speed and accuracy test. I believe i mentioned near the beginning of the video that I have them both set to AFC, which was kept for the entire video but you're right I should have mentioned it again for the low light tests!
Julia Trotti interesting. I think it is worth a separate video, perhaps a brief one with a title like “the camera tells you it locked focus BUT DID IT?” This is a huge issue, not well known I think.
Hi Julia
Which camera best for wedding photography , lowlight photography
Sony a7r4 , Sony a73 .
Hi Julia, Outstanding review. I currently shoot A7II using legacy lenses. I would like to know what the focus peaking capability of the A7R4 compared to the A73?. In any case, I pretty much decided on the A7R4.
Thank you for this test. Great job. Thanks Dan.
Which mic were you using for this? The audio is impressive :o
Great A7 III I am happy with the 200/600 plus the 1.4x!! I'm happy if you really want to make the leap then A9 or A1
That you for the review.. It confirmed that I made the right choice to go with the A7iii instead of the A7R4..... So thank you!
Hi! How Are You? I'm good ♡
which camera did you use to register and compare the two cameras? please answer me!🙂🙏🙏👏 me from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷
Great review. Thank you.
Hi Julia! have the a6400 and I’m looking to get a ff body also. I have the viltrox 23mm, sigma 56mm and the tamron 17-70 and 70-180. Would you recommend the A7r iii or the A7r iv?
Nice review. In the low light/high iso tests, it would have been nice to see the comparison at the same crop resolution. Do you think or can you check if the grain would look similar at the same res? Thanks
Thank you! Yeah that's something I could have included in hindsight as there are a few comments about this. Just to clear things up because some other people were confused: I took those low light portraits on a tripod so the full image looks exactly the same on the 3 and 4. Usually when you want to look at noise/sharpen images, etc you should look at them at 100% so I wanted to share them in the video at 1:1, which makes it look like the R4 photo is a lot more cropped in, but they are really both just on screen at 1:1 resolution. Next time I'll try adding both versions in!
Julia Trotti Julia Trotti right, I understand sharing the pictures at their 1:1 native resolutions. By crop though I mean it would be great to see both images at 24mp (6000x4000) for example so that the subject looks the same size on both. Then one could judge the noise difference respective to their megapixels. It would definitely be helpful to see both versions if you find the time. Thanks so much for the reply and wonderful work.
