- I decided to rank the soulslike games i have played from least to greatest in efforts to determine which one is the closest to dark souls and the best effort over all in emulating the formula. Let me know what your choice is for the best soulslike game whether its part of this list or one that i have yet to play. Also if you have played the games on this list, which order would you choose? Lies of P is legit man. To release a souls like that gets so much right and improves so much on your very first try is crazy. Absolutely crazy.
For real, man. Aside from Shadow of the Erdtree, my most anticipated game/DLC coming up is Lies of P DLC. Hoping we don't have to wait too long for it.
Yeah but the boss lineup and combat system make repeat playthroughs pretty underwhelming. Same problem with Sekiro.
I'd prefer a more open combat system that encourages experimentation, and Lies of P just ain't it
@@CosmicPotato The game is not that great lol. Its incredibly railroady in both it's gameplay and world design. Cool concepts and designs for the most part, but as a game its meh.
@@themasquerader101 there is no reason for you to go out of your way to put him down. let the guy have his own likes and dislikes. we dont expect you to have the same opinion of something the same way we do. and your opinion is valid too just dont put him down to show your own opinion.
@@themasquerader101 the game is a 9.4/10
Lies of P was such a surprise for me. Like its SO good and i wasnt expecting it at all. I love that game so much i shotgunned 3 playthroughs to get all the achievements.
Same. Got the platinum within like a week of release. (Never did that for any other Souls game.) Been telling everyone how amazing this game is ever since. Can’t wait for the DLC.
Is it worth it even after the nerfs?
Of course LoP is great. Its like all soulsborne games combined to one. Must play!@@michelecais4111
Yeah, it's still a really fun game and full experience. Only difference is with strong builds some otherwise tough and complex bosses don't last as long @@michelecais4111
@@thrashhhhh Same for me😂
While BG 3 was indeed THE GOTY for 2023, my personal GOTY for 2023 was Lies of P
Both Lies of P and Remnant 2 were better than BG 3 for me. Guess it's the genre😂
@@Niklas.Kirchner I mean I enjoy games like BG3, I really liked Divinity Original Sin 2. It’s just that I liked the world and music and stuff more in Lies of P. Also as much as I liked BG3, it’s a fucking long ass game and I got a bit burnt out by the time I started Act 3.
@@Niklas.Kirchner BG3 was a masterpiece. Lies of P and Remnant 2 were just good games. You can not like the gameplay as much and still realize that.
@@kazokadaswhich is why they said "for me" and didnt just say it in general
@@Niklas.Kirchnerit’s the genre which is pretty hard to make people like …I get y’all salty lies of p didn’t win don’t get me wrong lies of p was amazing but you can’t compare it too bg3💀 I love both games but that’s a game for endless mind tricks etc so much to do
Where is Bloons Tower Defense?
the only true souls like
i don’t know
It's not a soulslike cuz it IS a souls game😤😤

NOT TELLING
I hesitate to compare nioh to other soulslikes because it just excels in different areas. For me, nioh 2’s combat is absolutely sublime, especially once you really get into the meat of the systems in your second and third playthroughs. I genuinely can’t think of a better action combat system this side of DMC, but personally nioh 2 tops that for me.
Indeed; Nioh and Nioh 2 are basically Ninja Gaiden combat, but with a stamina bar, plus Diablo RPG and loot systems, with the exploration/level design, checkpoint, and drop-XP-on-death mechanics inspired by Souls. The things it excels at being are the things it does differently from FromSoft's games, not the things it does similarly. N2, especially, with its improvements and QoL polishing, is an amazing game, but it's relatively weak at _being a Souls-like_ compared to something like Lies of P.
I really like Nioh. It was the first soulslike I played after the Fromsoft games so it'll always have a special place in my heart
Snap 🫰
1st Soulslike game I ever played including the From soft ones
Lies of P kicked my ass so bad I spent an entire month with a pillow tied to my backside to be able to sit
I absolutely agree with this list. I’ve played Lies of P at least 12 times since it came out. I have over 200 hours in it. It’s so damn good!
I am so hyped that they have a sequel and a DLC in the works, and in fact the DLC was rumored to be coming out in the second half of 2024
Nioh 2 is one of my favorite, way beyond the first one!
Never played Nioh 1 but Nioh is amazing although admittedly I only played 2 weapons and first playthrough was the switchblade
@@looots1320 Fists carried me through end game, really OP!
I feel like nioh is way too underappreciated. I have 500 hrs on the first game and 1700 on nioh 2. There are so many different playstyles and the combat is just amazing. It's hard yes but it teaches you to adapt which a lot of games dont make you do.
I will die on the hill that nioh 2 is the best game ive ever played. I loved how hard it was and almost every single boss was fun and fair. It was peak in terms of the souls genre and I love the fact that you had to die a lot to get better. plus i dont think its an unfair game at all just very very hard but rewarding.
Nioh has the best combat system of any souls like. I really like how every weapon plays differently with different combos and how some builds even change the way you play even with the same weapon.
Ya I love nioh 1/2, have 1000+ hours between the two their my favorite games I’ve ever played
I hate sorting through all the loot but damn my first playthrough of the base game amazing, and bloodshed's end was unbelievably mesmerising
Nioh 2 is goated
Ranking Mortal Shell and Lords of the Fallen above Nioh is just nuts man 💀 but hey, as long as Lies of P stays on top!
Yeah I think it's because Nioh 2 (the only one I played) is only 50% Souls and 50% ARPG like Diablo
Man i know everyone has an opinion but Mortal Shell and LOTF above Nioh? Like wtf man any one who has a shit taste will not have this criminal option.
@looots1320 Nioh is nothing like diablo. Maybe you can argue the ton of loot you get bit other than that its a straight soulborne trust i played all Soulsborne with platinums and both Niohs i have Platinums so i know what im talking about and Diablo ain't it
Lords of the fallen definitely is better.
The video is hillariously bad
I will always have a special place in my heart for Code Vein, being the first soulslike I ever played, It has one of my fave magic systems, being able to dump ichor at long/medium range and then recharging at close range feels so fluid.
That greatness that is Lies of P should have been on breaking news all around the world. Just a masterpiece from start to finish.
Amazing game for sure!
Nioh 1 & 2 are one of my favorite games period. One of the reasons why is, that their is such an insane skill curve. Not only can you do different combos with a weapon, you can combo through 3 different stances and also combo through quickswitching to your second weapon. The combat flow is just really great
You should play Thymesia if you haven't already Squilla. Great game and it's pretty short.
For Nioh 2 is even better than most of the OG souls games. The combat has a depth to it, that to this day no other game could replicate
Nioh 2 isn't better than any Souls games. All it has is good combat. Everything else from level design to story to systems are sub-par.
@@darkoale3299 I personally prefer Nioh 2 over any fromsoft game. Sure mostly bcs of the combat. It made me enjoy the game much more.
I also liked, that it has some sort of endgame. Of course, i am not meaning it should. It is not a live-service game like Genshin, but having something, that you can always come back to, and still make you feel like you are progressing towards something is invaluable in my opinion. In that aspect, no amount of soul level 1 runs - or for the matter any other challange runs- wil come close to enjoyment.
@@darkoale3299 the main thing i love about soul games are there gameplay and bosses so yeah I will put nioh over darksoul 1 ,2 and demon soul
@@darkoale3299 Most important thing for me is combat, that's where Nioh 2 excels, therefore Nioh 2 gameplay is better than any Souls games. Nioh 2 in of itself as a video game is better than any Soulsborne but as a "Souls like" where you want to strictly follow the soulsborne formular thus want your exploration and cryptic world building it may not be the best because it's just a different game.
Nioh 1 is super underrated. I loved the 'weapon arts' and 'super' you get from the spirit that inhabits your blade. Super awesome and I think that when soulslikes incorporate stuff like that in, it only does the game good.
Hard disagree on Mortal Shell. That game was way too rigid combat-wise.
I have noticed a lot alot of souls youtubers ignore combat mechanics for some reason. This is why many of them don't rate any Team Ninja games despite Nioh 1/2 having some of the best combat systems, even Wulong/Stranger of Paradise have amazing combat systems but other flaws.
I am happy this video brought up Ninja Gaiden though since that is a great game.
@@tamim3319 I feel like people usually have the same problem with every team ninja game and it's neither the bosses or the combat, it's just level design.
@@JB-nl3xy Ya the level design and or the loot system. I don't know why they don't just copy Dark Souls loot system for one game.
Funny enough, I’m literally playing Lies of P right now
Me too man, three trophies left for the plat!
Me too
Here's something very important about Nioh
You enjoy it MUCH MORE if you don't treat it as a souls like.
Nioh 2 is one of my favorite games of all time
Nioh is all about gameplay, combat and builds and less about story and exploration
Nioh is garbage 🗑
😂
I was so preconceived about this game like "meh, just renamed souls, bonfires and so on" but it have much more than this. My absolute favorite souls-like not by FromSoftware
@@iHaveTheDocuments faxx
My first playthru of Lies of P was so delightful. I'm one of those who do care about the the story, gameplay, level design, music, UI, polish, etc and Lies of P just hit the nail. I cannot wait for the the DLC later this year.
Lies of p was my first souls like and I enjoyed every second of it. Played it to ng+4 in a row. The story really is good and keeps your attention.
Lmfao same. Lies of p made me love the parry mechanics. Then i play sekiro and now i can't enjoy the parry of some souls like as much as my first 2 lol
Lop and sekiro are just so good
You should try the remnant series. It's my favorite souls like series. The mid maxing in remnant is insane.
"Mid-maxing" is so funny
Lies of p is my all time favorite game man. I first introduced myself to "souls like" when I played wo long. Some will say it's not a souls like but it's damn near the same thing. Then lies of p was my second. And I know there won't be another game like lies of p. So happy I was able beat this game. Best ever
Not even Hellpoint on here. Such a good atmosphere and level design and an actual proper Scifi Souls artstyle.
HellPoint definitely deserves more attention.
I’m currently playing Nioh 2, and it has made me a fan of the soulslike genre. Such satisfying gameplay
Lies of P is King, surprised u didn't mentioned the unbelivable soundtrack, and we still have a Dlc coming.
Squilla you gotta play Crab souls (Another Crabs Treasure) it’s such a nice and chill experience while also having some challenging and engaging gameplay that was such a great change of pace with the Soulslike genre.
It's probably my 2nd favourite soulslike after Lies of P
While Lies of P is good because it excels at being exactly what we expect from a souls-like title, Crab Souls is good because of how it circumvents the usual expectations from the genre.
Amazed that Jedi: Fallen Order and Fallen Survivor aren't on here.
I would say they are both MUST-PLAYs and amazing tight combat games.
Good one! Amazing games. Maybe because "normal" wasn't hard enough.
One problem, they reek
well I have a problem with Survivor and that problem is that the game was not made for the GM difficulty. A lot of the bosses on that difficulty are simply BS, I beat it but it sort of annoyed me that the hardest difficulty is not optimized. Also the game still doesn't run well at all, which is just baffling
To me the combat felt really dull and had no weight to it
@@mcbill7352 fair. I liked them, but nothing beats the weight in Souls games. Close runner up is The Surge 2.
Lies of P was amazing and my first souls-like. I love it and can't wait for sequels!
Lies of P weapon customization is crazy good, made it one of my favorite games ever, the entire game itself was such a pleasant surprise
An alternative and simple name I like to use for the genre is "Die and Retry". That's at the core of the dark souls gameplay of course: confronting you with a fight so challenging that learning, failing and persevering are essential. But it also implies that you WANT to retry despite dying so much. That's where the fun and depth and gameplay play a huge part, as well as a universe and level design that keep you hooked and invested while maintaining an atmosphere fitting to the unforviging challenge. One would say, such last parts are important for any game, and that's true. The line between a classic action RPG is indeed thin if you move past the core respawn mechanic (even FromSoft prefer to use that term actually).
Actually I need to think it through more.
Edit: having playing again and finished Lord of the Fallen just a few day ago, I totally agree. I was impressed by the style and ambition and release, but the game was tiring on many aspect. Playing again, I was surprised to discover it was now very enjoyable. I still regret some missed aspects on gameplay but still, a great game that opens new paths.
(One my favorite part is having ranged weapons that contrary to Dark Souls are actually powerful and an integral part of gameplay. Magic is fun and striking too, though that's a shame you can't have both at the same time. If there's one thing for others similar game to take not gameplay-wise, that would be it. Parry system was nice too, but missed the opportunity of being smoother. The after animation delay and lack of a swift counterattack similar to Elden Ring would have made it more enjoyable.)
I agree lies of p is one of my all time favorite games ..a darker tale of a Disney movie just amazing ..imagine they could do this with all kinds of different characters ..I look forward to the dlc ..but lords of the fallen is an amazing game also ..I never played it at launch ..it’s runs great on the ps5 after all the patches ..I went for the embral ending on my first playthrough with a radiance build and had a blast ..I like more than fromsoftware in a lot of ways ..✌🏻
I’m definitely going to buy Lies of P soon. I’ve played every FromSoft game out there, and just about all of the games you mentioned above (Lords of the Fallen has become so much better now - I’m actually enjoying it a great deal).
You got me on the parry system of Sekiro, only more satisfying!
It's such a great game, even the story is amazing, don't forget the music discs too!!
Lords of the Fallen, for me, was a huge departure from my normal genre- I've always been an FPS kinda guy. When I bought this game shortly after release, I couldn't handle it- it was too hard, and there were too many buttons to reconfigure, and I just gave up. This June, I asked in the LotF Discord if someone would help me beat Pieta, because I couldn't, and beating her would open the hub of the world up for me. Not only did I get help with her, but I got help with more logical button mapping (I'm a keyboard and mouse guy, the last controller I used was the joystick for the Atari 2600), and made a really good friend, too. My buddy Bram and I now play this, Elden Ring, a few others, and we LOVE this game. Lords of the Fallen is one of the most visually spectacular and interesting games I've ever played. The whole dual worlds gimmick is awesome, and the Umbral world is the coolest "world-building" I've ever seen- it's truly amazing. There are now game modifiers, that include enemy density, enemy and loot randomization, and a whole bunch more. In 127 hours so far, I've crashed once, and that was because of constantly doing the ALT+TAB thing so I could follow an awesome walkthrough by FightinCowboy. I'm 127 in, and haven't even finished yet, I'm having so much fun exploring, farming, and playing "Lords of the Fashion". If you're a hardcore gamer and/or a souls-like fan, I HIGHLY recommend this game. It's an absolute blast, and even though I haven't finished even one play-through, I've created 5 different characters. This game for me gets a 98/100. Other favorite games of mine don't rank nearly as high. Give this game a try, it's absolutely AWESOME!
Nioh 1 and 2 are my favorite souls-like game, because it doesn't feel like its trying to be a carbon copy of from soft games. Also because their fun.
Nioh 2 is as of now my favorite non FromSoft Soulslike, I just recently started Lies of P the other day, and I’m really enjoying it so far! I’m still fairly early but it hasn’t been too difficult either yet
my personal favorrites so far are:
1. Nioh 2: for its amazing combat, build variety, stellar OST, and probably the best coop system in a soulslike.
2. Salt and Sanctuary: for the perfect blend of Metroidvania and Souls styled combat and exploration.
3. Lords of the Fallen (2023): for its interesting takes on exploration, viable ranged builds, build variety in general, and damn good QoL.
and 4. Code Vein: for having an interesting blend of class system and soulslike combat, another great OST, and a decent story.
I'm the opposite of you here. Nioh/Nioh 2 combat is so good. The stances for each weapon and skill trees gives you an in depth system to work with. Mortal shell is one of the only souls likes I never finished. I got the greatsword and played for a bit, but felt underwhelmed. The game just didn't click with me.
Lies of P, for me, legitimately rivals FromSoftware's best.
A thing I want to from this game I want to highlight are its non-boss and common enemies.
They don't just feel like R1-spam fodder. A lot of them poise and difficult movesets which are satisfying to deflect, especially the elite enemies which offer the greatest combat encounters outside of boss fights.
Another thing of not is their variety/diversity.
Despite there only being 4 enemy types (human, puppet, corpse, and ergo puppet monster), the amount of unique enemies is great. Each area offers a new foe to fight. It makes the game more replayable because combat outside of boss fights is also fun too.
Maybe its because i havent beaten the game yet, but i feel like most of the areas so far for me (up through the fallen archdeacon) are just littered with the same 2-attack puppets that you find right at the start of the game
I also really enjoy the enemy variety in Life of P, great Design
Throughout Lies of P I was continually shocked at the quality. Surely the next area would fall flat, surely the combat would get repetitive, surely the next boss would reveal some shortcoming... nope.
@@tomschlaiss5735 the enemy variety and enemies are the worst part of the game
Squilla, you need to give Thymesia a chance. It's a real short game so not a huge time investment but it has a fairly great combat system. I think you'd enjoy it.
You definitely need to checkout Thymesia, literally the only negative thing I can say about it is that its the developers first game and a s a result is too short only around 10hrs. The combat feels amazing, honestly it might be the funniest combat I've ever played period and the aesthetic is incredible, at least in my opinion anyway, with its medieval plague doctor horror style.
Did you not play nioh 2? I put it up there with the highest. I played it first and went all the way to the end of the depths. The combat is much much improved over nioh 1 which I played after and was done after 1 playthrough. 900 hours in 2. The combat is very complicated the further you get. Stacking skills building up your power level while also working on stacking status elements is how you really have to play in the depths. Only thing I didn’t like is inventory management and loot system. But combat wise it’s up there with the best.
I loved mortal shell. It was a lot of fun. Still waiting on something new from them. It’s been a while now.
Code vein I didn’t like at all. The combat felt floaty and movement felt just bad to me. Too much screen shake. Impact feel of hitting things didn’t feel like anything. I tried to like it but I stopped playing it within 10 hours.
Lies of p to me is up there with the best fromsoft games and better than most fromsoft games. Combat wise it’s so precise with its deflect and satisfying with its combat mechanics it’s hard to beat for me. I love parry’s on impact. Souls games parry’s are slightly early which doesn’t feel as good as on impact like in lies. Feels tighter that way.
I agree with you that it feels better than sekiro’s deflect which you can spam(not something I liked)
Playing charmless makes sekiro better but still the deflect doesn’t feel as good as lies does to me.
I got to the point with lies that I know which hit will break them. Just like Elden ring with its stance break system. I took risks to break them when I knew that hit will do it even before it shows the groggy state flash.
I see the stance system very similar to Elden Ring. Harder hits build faster but also deflects build it as well(not like Elden of course). But I see them similar just improved in lies.
Backsteps actually have s. They feel like another dodge and backstep attacks add one more variation of attack to your moveset(fromsoft take fckin notes). Make backsteps useful. Look how lies does it. I do a ton of backstep attacks in lies. They feel great.
Weapon system is amazing, fables are also very well done. It makes you not spam the fable like in Elden people get into bad habits spamming ashes of war because you get a bar for it.
In lies you have to earn your fable and it comes back over time. Somewhat like a cooldown system but better. You get it back faster the more you hit and the more you deflect. I love that type of system and it promotes you actually using your whole moveset instead of falling into bad habits with ash of war spam.
I could probably talk about lies all day. I have nothing but good things to say about the game. Combat wise it’s up there with the best fromsoft games to me. Very good story and not really any frustrating parts you get with fromsoft story telling with things being so vague. I do like some mystery so being able to follow things so easily I guess I don’t like as much but I still do like it.
Lies was one of my favorite level 1(10) runs. Very fun
DLC when?
Wu Long Fallen Dynasty was a game I really really enjoyed. Will have to give Lies of P a playthrough.
It's actually on sale right now. Just started it earlier today and I'm a few hours in.
@@brettpardue8786 same
Its on pc game pass and its the best soulslike imo
Lu Bu was one of my favorite Souls like bosses of all time. That boss fight was a straight up banger.
My list would look like this:
1. LoP
2. Nioh 2
3. LotF 2023
4. Another Crab's Treasure
5. Nioh
6. Code Vein
7. Mortal Shell
8. LotF

Everyones sitting here playing elden ring dlc while I'm just now playing Lies of P And I'm so addicted the parry feels so damn good. The world is so bad ass. I hope we see a new bloodbourne and they take notes from their counterparts.
lords of fallen above nioh series should be a crime 😅
Soulslike:
RPG-Elements
Higher difficulty
Cryptic storytelling
Interconnected world / level
Punishment for dying
Funny thing is that there's no reason to include cryptic storytelling in these games to call them soulslikes but most of the devs still do it because they blindly copy fromsoft.
I would love more focus on non-FromSoftware soulslikes
especially older ones because it feels like people move on from non from software games so much faster even when its not necessarily deserved
I think i’ve mentioned it in stream before, but i’ll recommend it again. The Surge was my first soulslike and i fell in love with it. super simple systems but great introduction to the genre. on NG+ 8 and i still go back every once in a while
Bro I'd love to see a list of ur fav game storylines!
highly recommend remnant and remnant two, they are looter shooter souls likes and have amazing gameplay
I started playing Lords of Fallen last week and loved the game
yeah they fixed a bunch of issues so it's quite different playing it now compared to release
Same bro, got hooked immediately. I cried a couple times but i made it through.
have you finished it? is it worth it? I just finished LoP and want something new
@@t.t6294 i started LoP last week its fun asf, i beat LoTF before i started Lies. I definitely recommend it bro especially if you want something more challenging. When i finish Lies ill be giving Lords another play through with the mods they have.
@@t.t6294 Imo it's really not worth it. I've put 150 hours in it (I'm a completionist) before playing LoP (which I now have over 400 hours in) and even though they fixed a few things and added a few QOL updates it doesn't matter. Enemies are all reskinned with similar movesets and zero complexity including the bosses (which most are regular mobs with HP bars and even unique bosses use a variation of the same movesets regular mobs use. Extremely lazy.), the story is imo one of the worst stories I've seen in an rpg, shallow, pretentious and bland. The weapon system is also bland (the ranged/spell system is cool though, really nice to use and I wish Fromsoft does something similar).
Anyways there's a ton of things I can say about this game but I'll put it simply. It's an excellent idea that's been executed extremely poorly. LoP is a true masterpiece and the difference in quality between the 2 is unfathomable. Ok I'm exaggerating but you get the point, playing LoF after LoP is like riding a bike after driving an Alfa Romeo Giulia (had to use an Italian car for this analogy for obvious reasons lol). Then again there are many people who enjoy it so maybe you will too, but objectively speaking I would not recommend it.
For me, a soulslike is just a game that reminds me distinctively of dark souls when I play it
It got memed on a lot on release, but I really loved SWJ: Fallen Order (played last year). The performance is pretty good now.
Caveat: the only "souls-like" element of the game is the combat, and I enjoyed Fallen Order's combat as well as it's other elements.
I loved Code Vein. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did.
I completed Lies of P just last week, and I went in almost completely blind bar the fact I knew it was a Souls-like.
I too absolutely loved it, and I too was completely taken by surprised by how good it was.
It took the Souls formula but then did it’s own thing with it.
I liked the different Arms and their upgrades, and I really liked the weapon customisations.
The environment was great, Fable Arts a cool idea and honestly I could go on.
What I want to say above all else is that I’m glad that a lot of other people share the enthusiasm.
Maybe we really will get that Oz sequel!
Yes! Lies of P! I've beaten the game 7 times and I can't wait for the DLC.
The first try for lords of the Fallen was apparently not great but the recent one was pretty good ngl and lies of P was fantastic I hope they do a sequel
I absolutely adore lies of p. Best katana in any souls
I really did like lords of the fallen, its a shame that it has lost a lot of its allure over the months to almost seemingly being a half dead game. With the added modifiers, I hoped it would be revived a little but that too didn't do much as I don't see many people playing it now. I would really like to see a few playthroughs with some of the modifiers active but as it is not an active game and elden ring dlc coming up it might be a loss of hope.
Wait so did you.not try Noih 2 in the end? You really missed out then, game is sick, my second favorite non from soulslike.
And in the end you didnt even mention my favorite one, Remnant 2. The first Remnant was alright, a flawed but ambitious game, but the second entry is amazing.
Like in terms of boss fights it stand head and shoulders above any of the titles here, looks great, has an intriguing story line and lore, appealing itemization, great variety of play styles and builds, is also very much skill expressive being a shooter, and has a range of ganre innovations, like its semi randomized level progression for example that mixes up playthroughs while maintaining a much more deliberate and exciting level design when compare to Lies of P or Code Vain, not too mention Nioh 2, even if i love the game. You should really give it a go
Nioh: Smooth, complex, enjoyable combat.
Team Ninja has given Fromsoft a run for their money in terms of their combat and some of the bosses.
Lu Bu from Wo Long, is the greatest boss on horseback and there is no close second.
Nioh 2 is my personal favorite from this list. I think something that is hinted at through people’s praise but isn’t fully talked about is the controls. The “Hold & Press” system really allowed for such a wide variety of things to do with just a standard controller. It creates almost a zen-like state where you just flow seamlessly through different attacks & actions.
When I finished Lies Of P. I had a void of playing other games the game was extremely rewarding.
Big fan of Chads of the Fallen and Lies of Peak.
Being new to souls like I find them extremely intriguing and satisfying to play. I'm simultaneously play lies of p and lords of the fallen
You absolutely crushed this video. Well done man. Loved every second of it
Lords of the Fallen hardly gets credit for its superb level desgin. The interconnectivity and size of the world is just amazing. Imagine a game which combines the level design of LOTF and the bosses of Lies of P. This would be my ideal soulslike
Lies of P is crazy good. I just started playing Bloodborne and I can definitely see the inspiration that Lies of P took from it.
Wish I could like Code Vein. The visuals alone is a huge turn off to me, sadly.
Code Vein is an incredibly good looking game. I don't understand the complaints.
not everybody likes japanese cartoon
I would have added "The Surge" to the list. Both of them have their flaws but I absolutely enjoy the limb system and everything that is included in it (farming, weakspots and so forth)
It’s such a shame how hated on Lords of the Fallen is by the wider community because it really is an ambitious and cool game with its own awesome merits to call its own as well as some clearly passionate developers keen on fixing its problems. I feel one thing that should really be brought to light is the way it does ranged weapons and magic-I think it’s pretty much just better than how From does it.
It really sucks how people still look at LotF with utter resentment, when it really doesn’t deserve that treatment.
Tbh i feel like people have become utterly annoying and unpleasable when it comes to soulslikes. Elden ring came out and yeah its 10/10, and a masterpiece, but people refuse go to play any game that doesn't have it's polish, or depth or scope. It's effectively like watching the lord of the rings trilogy and then refusing to watch anything else in the realm of fantasy because its worse.
Like yeah, elden ring had Miyazakis genius and 300m dollars behind it + all the assets from their 4 past games, equaling the budget to a summer blockbuster movie. Nothing like it will come in the next 10 years and yet people expect nothing less from small companies that made lotf and nioh
You have to play the Remnant series. Good story if you deeply look into, very good gameplay and it's got good replayability
I still do not understand the hate NIOH gets. For when it came out, nearly 8 years ago, it was far ahead of any other souls like. There were no other good souls like. NIOH had great story telling, fun level design, and amazing endgame replayability. More replayability than dark souls by miles and miles. NIOHs endgame hade hooked, and the amount of content and DLCs Team Ninja pumped out after release kept it going feeling fresh for almost a year after it came out. I had nearly 500 hours bt the time I put it down. So yeah, the endgame for NIOH beats all other soulslikes just for that. It's also worth mentioning that TeamNinja really felt like a studio that listened to what the players wanted. I miss those nioh 1 days. Plenty of jolly co-op too! Nioh deserves way more love
Totally agreed! And the challenge is way harder if you chose the build AND the set wrong. I love that game after sufferign a lot. But I learn a lot with that none soulslike could give me.
Regardless of how ahead or old or how inexperienced the dev team was a game will still be bad regardless in my opinion im not saying NIOH is bad i never played it however it does look fun and im thinkin about getting it but anyways thats my take on anything regarding video games which is why i say LoP is objectively bad at everything its trying to do regardless if the team who made it never tried making a soulslike before
Nioh doesn't really get hate, it has a 88 metacritic, sold really well and was nominated for best action game of the year.
Except I have noticed ALOT ALOT of souls youtubers don't like it for some reason. It seems like many people who are hardcore souls fans don't care about the combat system that much. Which is what Nioh really refines. It's funny because Elden Ring's builds get praised by many souls youtubers with the ashe of wars and all the customization. You can literally do that in all of Team Ninja Games.
The problem with Nioh is that is driven solely by its combat and build customization.
And these 2 are exceptional. However, everything else is pretty much subpar.
If you were to ask people what they enjoyed most about the Nioh games, I can guarantee you...95% of them will say the combat.
Where as Lies of P for example is driven by multiple things.
It may not do anything necessarily exceptional, it does however do many things really really well.
If you were to ask people what they enjoyed most about Lies of P, you will different viewpoints with some saying the story, or the combat, the characters, the art, the bosses, the soundtrack, the performance, the atmosphere, the weapons, the combat sound design, animations, level design etc etc
TeamNinja also has a very bad habit of having bad enemy variety and honestly their level design aint the greatest either.
@@CrystronHalq I agree with you that Team Ninja are subpar in other departments, I am not sure if it's this post but I even said it. They are terrible at basically everything minus combat and design elements on bosses/weapons/enemies.
But the reason why I rate Team Ninja so highly despite their weaknesses in many areas as you stated. Is because at least 80-90% of these games is fighting and they do that aspect even better than Fromsoft.
I do think Fromsoft have superior enemy design and boss design but at points Team Ninja gets close to those heights.
I 100% agree with you but I do think people often just point out their flaws in their games and ignore their strengths or how they keep improving combat systems while Fromsoft has been stagnant in that end minus Sekiro/Ac6.
Of course no way am I saying they are better than Fromsoft.
The 1st time i played a souls like game was Elden ring. This is a very good game but the game was too hard for me. Now lies of P is a even harder game and I love it I'm on my 4th play through and it never gets old. as you die more and more it becomes easier to play, Watching each main boss or mini boss, moves then going in for your super combo hits, then running away & waiting for your killing move. I am 3 achievements from Platinum. I will play this game over and over again. I just found out today that when you complete newgame + you get access to a 6th tree and if you play newgame ++ you get a 7th tree in you quarts tree. The location and the graphics and the main story is just phenomenon. It worth every penny. I hope the game development do a DLC.
Personally Nioh, Nioh 2, Wo Long and Lies of P were my favorites because despite the similarities had their own interesting identities.
I can't click with Code Vein's combat system it feels like it's just hack and slash am I missing something?
The Surge 2 is really good, I like the setting of the first better but if your looking for cool gameplay, parry and dismemberment give a very visceral feel to the game. Remnant is anothe really fun twist on the souls formula
One of the few games I’ve played more than once. Lies of p! Such a gem
The more I play lies of p the more I like it. I find it more interesting than bloodborne tbh
This reminds me of the Ole School Legacy of Kain for Ps1 in regards to phasing between worlds within the same world and area.
id say the two biggest factors for a souls like are difficulty and losing souls/ currency upon death
Yeah Lies of P is crazy man. I'm replaying it again right now and man it just blows almost any other soulslike out of the water. It's seriously a contender for one of my overall favorite games of the past few years and is actually better than many Souls games to me. It's probably above pretty much all of them besides Sekiro and maybe Bloodborne, I even enjoy it more than Elden Ring.
You give up streaming?
Lies of P is so good. It runs like a dream(60fps on steam deck!), looks like dream and plays like a dream.
Nioh would have been much more enjoyable for me if it doesn't involve rng loot system like in those Diablo-like games
To me , souls-like and diablo-like just dont mesh too well.
For Lies of P, i beat it 3 times and enjoyed it.
i just find the overall map design/ layout / scenery quite a bit dull compare to Fromsoft titles, so my 3rd playthrough feels kinda repetitive at times.
I guess you haven't played Wo Long fallen Dinasty. It's one of my favourites Souls-like. I highly recommend you to play it, and if you finish it then go back to Lies of Pi. You'll find a new outfit and one of the best weapons in the game.
CodeVein is my personal top soulslike game. For the excellent story and characters, that you really remember and the magnificent music ost. Also, great cyber-vampire aesthetics.
I'm curious if youve played Death's Gambit. I've seen a lot of negative opinions on it but it's one of my favorite souls/metroidvania-likes. Biggest issue with it is it has an awful save corruption bug on console.
Lies of P deserves that ranking tbh, I have a hard time getting back to fromsoft's souls games after that magnum opus and I hate it
Remnant and its sequal are pretty awesome too
Hell yeah
You have put every great feeling and thought I still have for Lies of P so perfectly and inspired me to play Lords of the Fallen, great video and thanks again for your continued excellent content 🕶🗡️
Never played a soulslike before Lies of P. Never much been good at games in general (I loved God of War 2018 but i played it for the story and had it on easy mode) a good friend started obsessing over Lies of P and I figured I'd give it a shot. I was hooked instantly. most fun I've had in a while. seriously, pick it up it will change things for you
The only problem that "Lies of P" has, it's that is totally linear. Not that I personally care that much, but is the only thing that could reduce replayability. Great game anyways, for sure.
Also... I think "Lords of the Fallen" deserves more love. The level design is incredible, and they did a lot of work improving and fixing things.
Cheers!
Lies of P is heavily underrated. It is insane
I'm glad that the only game I've played in this list is the best one. I'm currently almost through with the NG+ and close to getting the platinum trophy in Lies of P.
I stand by saying if Lies of p was developed by fromsoft it would have gotten goty
My favourite parry in a soulslike is probably from The Surge 2, that game had issues but the directional parry was satisfying once you could nail it constantly.
Great video, Squilla! I agree wholeheartedly with you on “Lies of P.” It made the greatest impression out of the games you mentioned. The gameplay was engaging and very challenging for me. The arm mechanics were very fun for me. I loved being able to keep up with the story and understand it. Having markers for NPC side quests was very helpful.
