      It's a basic feature that should be present in any game of a similar type. FS not adding it to their games is just their usual bullshit like no pause menu or whataver. They like making the game experience a little shitty. Just because.

    • @xx_amongus_xx6987

      @@masterofsorrow2699 Your thinking is too shallow. Fromsoft not only does it for in-lore reasons, but because of co-op and invasions. A player should be able to look at another player and instantly tell how much poise they may/may not have, along with their defense. Wouldn't it be really stupid and annoying if you went to go fight a naked player, and they actually had havel's armor on but you just couldn't tell? It's funny you also bring up the no pause menu in the same comment, because it exists for similar reasons.
      1# you can't just pause the game because being able to do so would take the stress out of encounters if you were allowed to catch your breath. Fromsoft's worlds are living and breathing, you can only catch breaks at bonfires or safe areas. 2# Fromsoft's games are always online with messages, player phantoms, and invaders. It should go without saying that a multiplayer game cannot have a pause button.
      Just because you don't understand something, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense or have reasons. Fromsoft knows what they're doing.

    This game is wonderful in every aspect but one thing I don't see many people talking about is the soundtrack. The soundtrack is insane. I remember being so dissapointed when I got a record from completing a quest and then I took it back to the hotel and figured "why not see what this record is like" And then I turned on the collectable masterpiece known as Feel and just sat there for like 10 minutes listening to it on repeat.

      When comparing the total of works against each other, Lies of P beats every Fromsoft...actually probably most Souls like. Ds3 and Bloodborne have a few tracks than stand out on top and just grab me every time, but when combined with their other tracks and compared to Lies of P, LoP just comes out on top.
      Also, the fact the game added a mechanic that enticed me to just stop and listen to a track with no other distractions...it was the first time that a game mechanic almost made me shed a tear. Beautiful is all I can say about the mechanic and the soundtrack

      Because I ALWAYS turned it on from that point, it would be playing on the background during emotional moments/dialogues. Such as the King Of Riddle quest end dialogues. THEY HIT 10x HARDER.
      And the deaths... Or going back to the hotel and out on the corresponding record... It was so emotional and beautiful
      AND it is also a mechanic as it adds to our 'humanity meter'
      AND on newgame+ you get golden records which usually are alternative versions.
      The records EASILY became one of my many favourite things

    20:08 so this is basically the Monster Hunter sharpness mechanic, which is the only durability mechanic that makes sense. It adds another layer of rhythm by getting the player to think about when they can withdraw and sharpen safely.
    Put another way: if strikes and dodges are the quarter and eighth notes of this rhythm game, sharpening is the rest note you have to work into the beat.

    • @ikaburn
      @ikaburn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually didn't bother with sharpening that much since I went for the bonesaw/wrench+baton build, charge attacks + puppet string. I realized the game was too easy with those weapons so on the new game+ i went for a more vanilla build and it was definitely more fun and hard.

    • @h33day
      @h33day 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Except even monster hunter's revolves around not losing sharpness. 80% of the sharpness-related skills (in MHR&W) are made for you to sharpen less, and with the recent changes they made to Wilds, it looks like they're becoming aware that their outdated design philosophy and decided to rework the sharpness gain.
      Lies of P is quick, and lets you choose how much you want to sharpen. Doesn't take away agency from the player and hardly ever feels like a burden.

    On my second play through now. In my experience, what works for LOP is the fact that, you are actually encouraged to use all your defensive options.
    As in, the game implies to you that parrying is important, but actually, the game is so much easier if you use all 4 defensive options. Those being “Parrying”, “Dodging”, “Blocking”, and “Run the fuck away”.
    Blocking looks weak at first, but the more you play, the more you will realize “wait I don’t have to parry the whole combo, I can just block it and rally back my health”. And for fury attacks, you don’t have to learn how to parry all of them, some are just much easier to dodge outside the hitbox instead.
    As a result, “optimal play” for different player and playstyles can vary a lot, and it doesn’t feel like there is a single “correct” playstyle like Sekiro.

    • @akirachisaka9997
      @akirachisaka9997 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Different builds also encourages different defensive strategies. For example, the Two Dragon Blade costs a lot of stamina to R1, which means you don’t have much stamina to dodge with s. However, your R1 repositions you, so “position yourself to not get hit” often becomes the optimal defense option.

I think with other souls titles they're so cryptic with the story and the fact his has a heart felt one built in grabbed me. What it has done is make me want to try more. Well done that team for an absolute banger of a game. The production levels in this game are absolutely incredible. Now you will find me in the Lands Between! Just finished my ng+ run of lies of p
    It is now in my top 3 favorite souls games of all time
    And honestly i would rank it next sekiro and ds3 in the highest tier of souls games
    Lies of p is the first souls game that got me invested 100% into the story which was just amazing, the bosses (although for me personally not as good as ds3 and sekiro bosses) are absolutely amazing but may suffer from some minor design flaws
    The soundtrack is masterful and the environement is just on a whole other level and the combat/weapon system are the best ones we've seen yet in a souls,
    Even with the minor flaws this game has i would easily give it a 10
    This game hasnt ruined souls for me because i still think ds3 has the best bosses and ost and sekiro has the best combat system in any game period
    But lies of p easily ranks next to these two to games

You don't have to listen to them but if you do you are not only rewarded with character progression but the music itself is so damn good that even those moments feel just as satisfying as the combat. Alright so I recently have started playing Lies of P
    I’m no veteran souls like player as I have only beaten bloodborne and elden ring
    sure i have played ds 3 and sekiro but I didn’t beat them specially sekiro as I suck truly suck at parrying most of the time so I dropped sekiro
    But this game was different. It was the first time I really wanted to try it out solely because it was Pinnoccio I was playing as and the gothic atmosphere which reminded me of bloodborne
    this game basically is the perfected version of sekiro and bloodborne combined. What this game has is the fact that you ate versatile enough to deal with enemies the way you see fit. For me? I want to parry as it feels nice to stagger enemies and knowing the fact that they are just as vulnerable as I am and knowing that they might lose their own weapons with just me parrying them and also what you didn’t point out was that Human bosses have different builds just like us.
    Fir example Lady in white felt much easier for me to handle since I had the same build and same weapon type and move sets (was using etiquette) and it just felt exciting to know that she could parry me just like how I could parry her.
    i really found Romeo the hardest boss for me (I have not yet finished the game but he just felt extremely scary to beat)
    what romeo had was Technique build with advance but he felt like he had just a little bit of everything in him
    and honestly he was too fast for me to parry so i dodged and dodged and parried like 2 times but to me, every boss improved my parrying skill a bit. specially romeo and mad donkey.
    I just think that this game really deserves all the praise it gets and I hope to see a dlc for it probably soon.

      Seriously! I’ve felt this way forever.
      I am immediately drawn to or critical of a game based on the core animations...especially walking/running since that’s usually the primary means of travel. Another reason why I personally prefer the parry (in sekiro, havent played lies of p yet) over the mandatory dodge roll, is because Ive always felt like dodgerolling in souls games, while necessary to survive, doesnt look like it should realistically prevent the damage it prevents. For some fights and enemies it makes perfect sense, but in other cases something bigger than the screen chomps down onto you and everything around you in a 5 mile radius and you simply seem to turn into a ghost for the duration of your i-frames. It doesnt look like you dodge, it just looks like the attacks phase through your body without damaging you, which is something you obviously get used to and learn to ignore when you play from soft games, but at the same time it feels a lot less satisfying than landing a chain of parries in sekiro. My brain has a way easier time believing that I somehow parried that huge attack with my own weapon than that I would simply roll through it without being hurt. On top of that there are of course attacks that you cannot parry and then have to jump over or roll away from, but in souls games the dodgeroll quickly turned into a universal solution for everything, no matter if it made sense or not, and that just doesnt feel as satisfying to me.

    • @thedoomslayer5863
      @thedoomslayer5863 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's more satisfying because it's quicker, lets you control your position (you remain where u were), is more responsive, looks way cooler than rolling in dirt like a pig, and due to being quicker u can have bosses do a giant flurry of near instant swings and have it be perfect for a rapid parry session whereas with a roll those quick follow ups would "roll catch" you and it would feel unfair.

    You touched on 2 things that ive some of the biggest gripes ive had with as im going through my very first FS/Elden Ring playthrough:
    1. The obscurity of quests and following them. NPCs describe them in ways that are incoherent if you were were not born in the 15th century and there is no way to track them or see how much you have progressed. this ties into another issue i have which is the item descriptions having no specific number details. If its FS attempting to stop players from min-maxing builds they have failed because there wouldnt be as many guides/calculators/YT videos dedicated for them.
    2. You are not incentivized to fight ER bosses aggressively because of their combo chains. say a moveset has 3-5 combos. doing 2 movesets back to back is completely fine. however the issue becomes more and more annoying when the bosses can do 3 or more movesets straight without any real stamina cost on their part. on top of that they can jump out of the punish window by the second hit and immediately follow it up with attacks that will 1-2 shot your healthbar, while you are stuck in animation. IMO it quickly turns the experience of beating bosses from a sense of accomplishment to now a sense of relief because of the game artificially punishes you with what feels like gimmicks.

    You really don't need to spend time in menus in Nioh, just pick up everything you see and between every few missions just sell it all or convert your stuff into materials. If you do happen to get a rarer piece of armor/weapon then it's worthwhile to check it immediately, but otherwise you can just skip the menu hell entirely, so it's not really that different from dark souls.

    One thing I never hear anyone talk about when they mention the guard recovery system, is it doesn’t just rally if you hit the enemy but you also rally when perfect guarding, turning a defensive mechanic into an offensive mechanic on top of causing the enemy to be groggy or break their weapon makes your options to rally more engaging in how you wanna regain health. And how you wanna be aggressive, be it damage or poise/weapon health

    Aside from your Dark Souls 3 take (not sure what's going on there), I agree with everything in this video. Your parrying vs dodging explanation is brilliant and really eye opening when you think about what makes a game like this more engaging. Really shows how important and influential the introduction of the mechanics in Sekiro were to the genre. I just got this game a couple days ago, but I'm about 6 hours in and completely hooked. There have always been moments in fromsoftware games where I'll think to myself "I'm not a fan of this boss/area," but so far I haven't had any of those thoughts with this game, but rather every new boss or area I come across I love even more than the last one. I think you're mistaking something about Dark Souls' combat: it's _supposed_ to be focused on the enemies over the player. It's a game where you have to always be on the look out for opportunities to attack bosses and attack them then rather than on your own terms (unless your build facilitates that).
    Dark Souls is a game where bosses tell the player, "Die", as they bounce around the battlefield and hit you with everything they have, and the player's response is, "No, I don't think I will". You don't beat bosses, they try to beat you and, after taking the beating, you say, "Is that all you've got?", before walloping them.
    If you like Lies of P's combat over Dark Souls', that's okay, but what the two games' combat try to achieve are entirely different. They're different in the same way that Dark Souls and Bloodborne combat is different: one is slow and methodical, where you have to balance defense and offence, while the other is aggressive, where your offence is also your defense.

    The reason for me that lies of P is so good is that it takes the good from soulslike games and then adds its own elements and mechanics to improve upon it. The appeal of these games is the difficult enemies, realistic combat e.g. parry, side step, roll, block etc. and customisation of combat through weapons and abilities. A lot of studios get inconvenience/annoying/tedious mixed up with difficulty and thats what ruins some titles e.g. lords of the fallen.
    A game thats not a soulslike but takes these elements really well is god of war, some bosses in this game are close to the difficulty of the hardest souls bosses e.g. sigrun, god king etc

    I never touched Soulsborne games because I'm a sucker for a story. I don't like it when I have to watch 45 lore yt videos to explain to me the lore and story of the main characters or the world I'm in. I also hate the medieval setting, I never said those games are bad, just not for me. When I saw the LoP announcement vid I knew I'd get this game because it tapped all the right chords (at that time) for me. Setting, aesthetics, character/enemies design, atmosphere. When the demo dropped I played it for 8h, getting good at parrying and feeling so good when I got that satisfying *cling* sfx and the weapons of the enemies/bosses breaking. I grew to love all its characters, felt for the NPCs and the unnamed people of Krat, LOVED the battle even through NG+3. This game is GOTY for me and I feel so privileged to have played and appreciate it. Subbed.

  • @neyouno
    @neyouno ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You definitely haven't understood the system Nioh has in place properly and this is the issue i see most fromsoft players have with the game. You don't need to sit in the menu and meticulously go through each gear piece as you are progressing. There are levels and rarities and simple damage numbers which exist in every game of this type, while also having 2 main stats to look into being weight and toughness stuff that exists in all of these types of games. Additional effects are simply that additional effects you can search and look at what they are but while u progress through the game you do not need that. These buffs give you some of the most extensive build variety of any action combat game out there in the end game. You get your loot and build whatever you want, that's the endgame of nioh. What Dark souls games force you into for the most part is sticking with 1 weapon due to the lack of upgrade material, this is incredibly limiting in terms of build and doesn't allow experimentation on the part of the player and is there to create a fake sense of replay value in these games, meanwhile in nioh you can pick up whatever gear piece, build and weapon you want you can experiment so incredibly much with it that it's simply incredible. Nioh has a bunch of other flaws, i.e the enemy balancing and some level design elements. Nioh 2 fixes every issue and improves the game 1000 fold and is the ultimate game of this genre and has yet to be dethroned. Highly recommend it to everyone who hasn't tried it

    • @Levin_sun
      @Levin_sun 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are other problems in nioh - the combat system is just fine, but - you have few opponents and their variety to use them
      The problem of the design of locations and opponents
      While playing 1 nioh, I found myself thinking that I was playing the alpha version of a promising project with a combat system rather than a full-fledged game
      The gear system frustrated me and knocked me out of the dive with its numbers - I hate such lazy progression systems and it would be better if they didn't exist
      The god of war has the same problem with equipment

    • @neyouno
      @neyouno 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Levin_sun If we are strictly talking nioh 1 then yeah the lack of enemy variety is a real thing which was remedied in nioh 2, however they compensate the lack of enemy variety by adding the quality to these encounters, each monster is unique in how you approach and fight them, with varied movesets especially in nioh 2, some nioh 2 regular enemies have more moves than bosses in the souls series, i'd fight 10 more Fuki or Suiki before half the boss roster in the first 3 souls games. The visual design of all of the yokai enemies is also great and fits the lore they ascribe to, both with the moves and looks.
      Now as for the locations all of the main story locations for both Nioh 1 and Nioh 2 are unique and some are absolutely amazing like the Mausoleum of Evil is just incredible, not to mention the DLC areas. and while sure the levels don't have those shortcuts or whatnot from the original souls game, they are indeed more linear with more planned out encounters that's a preference thing and not a real indictment on the game itself.
      The Equipment thing is again your own personal preference. In Dark Souls the way you get better equipment is by choosing a weapon and being forced to choose precisely not knowing what you might eventually get and focus on that weapon due ot the scarcity of materials and then only in NG+ can you begin experimenting properly without fully hampering your damage. Nioh games use a calassic ARPG style where weapons are tied to specific stats and bonuses, mind you you can ignroe these unless you are going for a full endgame build which is the same way it works in any classic ARPG which is what nioh's system is. You can just go and grab the bigger and better weapon and keep on trucking or you can just use your first katana and beat the game just fine, you aren't limited in what you can or cannot use you aren't forced to choose a specific weapon and stick to it you are encouraged to diversify and use whatever you like and build whatever diverse build you like, while being able to respec whenever you so please. It's just a completely different system that you didn't engage with properly because you either aren't a fan of such a system or you don't like the system to begin with, either way that is not a flaw with the game inherently, it's a preference thing. I like way more being able to use any weapon i want swapping based off the boosts that i like and just changing up weapons on the go, whereas in dark souls i grab the strongest bonking stick level it up and never change because of the scarcity of materials, it's just a different system.

    Another method of avoiding enemy attacks that gives even MORE options to the player is that most enemies in Lies of P have a pretty short reach, and therefore, simply running away or dancing around them is often pretty effective - even against most fury attacks! I definitely relied on that fact before I knew the attack timings. Elden Ring is equally dear to my heart, but it was kind of refreshing when Lies of P tended to pit me against bosses smaller than buildings, whose attacks didn't sweep the entire arena.

    I think the key aspect a lot of 'souls-likes' miss, along with Lies of P, is the ability to get lost and veer off path.
    Dark Souls, Bloodbourne, Sekiro have a level of mystery with them that has not been replicated in the same mysterious way. The ability to veer off of path, or go somewhere completely different and realise there is an obstuction/path that cannot be accessed until you reach a certain level of progression in another area is invaluable.
    An example in DS1 - You have 7 locations from the get go that are all woven together. For example you CAN go into the catacombs right at the start, however you will reach the yellow blocked door that you cannot access until later. This feeling of 'oh wow ive discovered this, but i need something to get past it', is CRUCIAL to the feeling of awe and mystery that Souls games posess.
    Even bloodbourne which is more linear. After Cathedral ward you can choose different paths to venture down that converge or serve purpose to another location that you have to find.

    I made this copy pasta a few weeks ago, because Vaati Vidya said plainly that old AC controls suck and it totally incensed me ablaze because his words are what I have to contend with every time I try to have an opinion about games now.
    "You dont fundamentally understand git gud. Git gud doesnt mean grind until you're good so you can feel rewarded for accomplishing something arbitrarily tough. Git gud means grind until you're good enough to understand why the specific design decisions made contribute to. Dark souls leverages death and failure to immerse the player in the emotional role that character plays in the story so that at the end, they feel a sense of earned greatness. Armored core leverages a befuddling wall of controls and customization options to immerse the player in the headspace of the pilot to achieve a sense of earned freedom or agency. Saying old ac suck because the controls are bad is the same as saying dark souls sucks because it sucks when the punishes you for dying by taking your health. Congratulations, you are now more video game literate than vaati vidya."

    So whenever I play a game of any genre, the base expectation I have is that I'm going to enjoy it. That's it. I'm going to enjoy the gaming experience of what I paid for. I'm not looking for the best gaming experience of my life or some genre-defining spectacle. Just something I'll enjoy playing for the time I play it. I had the same expectations for Lies of P. When I tell you this game GREATLY exceeded my expectations. The story, level design, weapons, enemies, boss fights, music (OMG the MUSIC!!!!) like man this game is one of the best games I've played this year.

    The thing I love the most about lies of p is creating new weapons and creating a new combat style that way. Imagine an elden ring type game where you can pick an ash of war, a combat art, plus all the normal attacks each weapons have. It makes it a souls game that feel like absolver allowing you to create not just a character but your own weapon and combat style

    In my opinion, Lies of P offers levels that are mainly straightforward, less interconnected than DS1 except one area you included that obviously becomes the best area. It offers combat that has less potential dedicated build variety, instead focusing on secondary numbers, and blocking even few essential combat abilities, that exist by default in every similar game, behind a skill tree. In addition, it offered a demo which had less showcase than Nioh's beta demo that featured 4 or 5 levels and bosses instead of 3. Also, the game featured bosses that were less memorable than your least favorite from software game mostly cranking the difficulty by adding random numbers to attack timings while not telegraphing correctly.
    However, it offered a better durability system that turned it into a management mini game, mix and match mechanic and a rally system that has been implemented in a more superior way in Lords of the Fallen with its Metacritic score of 72.
    I can't see it ruining Dark Souls for me to be real, guess we are all happy with ourselves! Wish you all the best though, I just stated my personal experience as you did. Cheers🤗

      It's all a moot point anyways since without 15 years of Souls we'd never have gotten LoP anyhow. Whether it ruins or not is secondary to the fact that From created a genre, whilst LoP is simply an entry in that genre.

    Something I love about Fromsoft, something that's absolutely revolutionary in this era, is that they never once take away your agency. In absolutely none of their games are you forced to walk just so characters can explain the plot to you. This is a key element of what makes their games so replayable, and it's never talked about.

    A bit late to the party, but watching the video, it was like someone (for the most part) was reading my own thoughts and impressions of Lies of P back to me.
    To me, after +100 hours and a few playthroughs, Lies of P has joined hands with other videogame Gods in the pantheon of gaming.
    Making a decent souls game is deceptively hard. It's like the production of an orchestra. There are many bits and piece to it, but in the end it's the gestalt and the culmination of those pieces that matters. If a single part is below decent, not only is it felt by the audience but it also hurts the overall impression of the product.
    To everyone's surprise, LoP feels like a game made by veteran Souls developers while delivering the creativity of a fresh mind. Its existence would be utterly unbelievable if it wasn't in front of our eyes already. It gets so many things right that even with its minor flaws it feels morally wrong to give it anything but a 10/10.

    The weapon system on it's own is actually incredible, so often when receiving new gear I'd go back and mix and match all of my weapons until they were as optimized as can be AND when I got frustrated from a boss or a section I could always look at what's killing me and design weapons optimized for killing them. To call it fantastic or incredible is underselling it and it's so minimal it could be completely disregarded if you really just want vanilla weapons with no frills.

      Malum District item grind loop made me realize that the devs want you to use your throwable items VERY liberally since there's a vendor who sells unlimited amounts of most of this type of item. Once I knew I could just throw Thermites and the like to my heart's content to stack elemental damage on bosses from a distance and close in to do boosted corresponding elemental melee damage and absolutely SHRED bosses on either the first or second attempt after a bit of observation.
      Yes, I'm technically a Souls vet, but this game is definitely the most "beginner friendly" in the genre; and all without compromising the challenge and difficulty we expect from them.

    I actually think your ranking of Fromsoft games is quite fair, especially when talking replayability and overall satisfaction. Sekiro and bloodborne are both quite dense… but also very polished and almost never boring (lies of p falls in this category as well).
    Though I personally would put ds3 higher on the list, it does suffer from a lot of sluggish and un-fun sequences, which almost makes me dread picking it up again- Even more so with elden ring.
