OMG this set was amazing. As a Lego Big fan maybe you remember a TV commercial where a child is about to go to sleep and puts something heavy on the Lego mechanism and the Lego train turns off the lights in the room?
There’s something magical about the simple play features of retro sets! Congrats on acquiring this amazing set!
3:18 I hadn’t realized that there aren’t good scans of the instructions out there. I’ll have to scan mine and upload to the usual sites. I vaguely recall that the bits on the track (the arch and the two radar dishes) were on the insert that shows how to do the track layout.
The dome pieces are nice. I luv the translucent pieces and the metallic colors.
When you turned it on, the sound! Love the Monorail sound, and I don't know why. 😁
This was one of the very few sets I kept. The Lego monorail was in a tiny toy store and mom saw how much I looked at it on a high shelf. Only child with single mom and this thing was expensive. Glad I still have it. I had the six-wheel red Magnet guys vehicle but sold it at garage sale. I have not had my monorail out of the box for about 28 years. Thank you for showing it off.
One of my favorite Lego sets.
I got this back in 1990 or so when I was about 7, and recently decided to assemble it. I was shocked to discover I had all the pieces and it worked perfectly, but the biggest miracle was that the battery box hadn't been ruined by an exploding battery during the last 30 years. Mine also has the thicker bricks on the connector cable.
Glad you were able to get this. Always love the monorail play features. These sets are not only expensive today - they were expensive then- lol! Its neat seeing how much the exclusive parts have gone up. I had to get some parts for mine but that was a long time ago. Gets more and more challenging to complete which is why this is such a special set to have.
Yes, I've really wanted to get one while they are still on the market! I feel like there are less and less every year! I can always fix it up over time but I am so happy to finally have it!

My dream LEGO set was ICE Planet 2002! It took me several years to find and get all sealed sets and I also have one of each set to display!! It’s my favorite and thank you for sharing this!!
This is my all time favorite set. I still have the parts and could probably assemble it, Ship of Thesius style, but I love it.
Circled this in the Sears Wishbook for years as a kid, never got it, but it was an expensive set to buy even back in the 80's. Finally got mine 4-5 years ago, complete with box and expansion track pack!
Fantastic set! My sister and I actually bought this for our mom when we were kids. She still has it as well as the original box!
Wow, I'm so jealous. I had this set brand new when i was 7 years old and wish i had a time machine to steal it from myself as 7 year old me didn't keep all the peices together and played with it like a child. 😅

I had this set when I was little! I built a space mall around it.
That is the same monorail my son had. He had a lot of fun with it. When we bought a new house somehow it went missing and it never showed up again. I’ve been trying to find one myself. Omg this was MY dream set, when I was a kid in the 80s! 😲 … also, I don’t remember the specifics, but Lego can no longer make these monorails tracks. A real shame.
The monorail track was outsourced to a third party company who manufactured the track for LEGO and that company went out of business. I also heard that the molding of the track elements had about a 50% rejection rate so one out of every two pieces had flaws in the mold.

WOW.... this brings back some memories. This was the first lego set I ever got. I woke up one Christmas morning and it was already built for me, this was somewhere between 1989-1991. I was between 4 and 6. (I was always bummed that I never got to build it myself, though I think my older brother conned my mom into building it for me before I even woke up since I was so young. Oh well. I eventually combined it with an Underwater base lego set, and turned the train into a multi part submarine.
This is a great video and set! I collect period 1970-1996 with boxes and manuals. This one is definitely on my wish list!

$18 for the little antenna rod thingy is such a typical thing for such expensive old sets, stuff like that and those rare plumes from the Castle sets.

So funny, I saw this set at a local Bricks and Minifigs - might have been the same one! Congrats on getting the dream set! Love how this channel deep-dives into old sets like this - it's often the closest look I've gotten at some of these sets outside of their pictures in the Lego catalogs back in the day.

So happy for you! This is the grail set for lots of us. I just got the same set a couple weeks ago finally after so many years of hoping to find one for a decent price. Facebook marketplace was very good to me! The set is minty and it arrived with the box and manual and backdrop and it wasn’t even advertised with it being included so it was the best day ever when a big box showed up at my house! NIce find! This is such a fun set so thanks for sharing your experience. Monorail came out after I went dark, but once I returned to LEGO in 2013 I was intrigued by the whole monorail concept, especially the Futuron. Space (Classic Space) was my final theme before I went dark, so the futuron minifiges with their "updated" space uniforms were especially appealing. I found my Futuron monorail at an estate sale in 2016. Now have enough straight track to run it in my large Classic Space display with a second MOC train. Have a modified one too that now runs in my city display.
Yeah, I love this set too. It's easily my favorite space set, with the Message Intercept Base being my second.
The original instruction has at the last pages a part, which you can unfold. Due to this reason I think it´s hard to scan and you could´t find the decorative antenna elements building steps. Happy building and have fun with this great sets! I hope you get all three of them and can review these wonderful sets. :)

Totally set it up to run around the Christmas tree! I did this several years ago with 6991 Monorail Transport Base and it was amazing. Since I never had a train (nor monorail) around the tree as a kid, it was something really special to see!

Nice, I don't think I have this one, but if I do, it's packed in storage. But I do have the 6991 Monorail set out, and it's here in the original box right next to me. I wonder if these two would link together well into a nice bigger Monorail configuration..? 🤔😃
That's funny Stacey because a few years ago I got my dream Lego set, 6399 Airport Shuttle. It was not cheap, I saved up for over a year for it. I finally bought it back in October 2021 on Ebay for $887 from someone in Canada. Absolutely love it, glad I bought it.

A couple of mods my brother and I did to our copy of this set back in the day: Firstly, putting a square 2x2 plate under the round 2x2 tile on the stop rails makes them easier to turn (in later monorails, Lego used square tiles, probably for the same reason). The other was to change the container mountings to be compatible with those in sets like 7823, so the monorail could transfer containers to a train or a ship and vice versa.

The thing I'm impressed about is that you got hoses with good clutch power.
I bought a bunch of used Lego pieces to build (Neo-)Futuron-style MOCs, 12 or so years ago (the trans-dark blue antennae weren't that expensive for me, nor the dome pieces, but I had to pay a *lot* for the TD blue cockpit extenders!), but I consistently had trouble with the hoses (white, black, and old grey), because they're often used "under tension" but have bad clutch. That annoys me a lot, because they're excellent for greebling.
Wow! I just saw that exact set when I was on travel a few weeks ago! I'm so glad to know it went to such a happy home. :)
7:06 I recently decided to check the condition of my monorail, and discovered that the connector wire has basically disintegrated and the motor only runs in one direction. ☹️ I found instructions for repairing the connector wire, but what little I could find on fixing the motor is that they’re basically impossible to fix. I can confirm that getting a known-working motor is not cheap! (I haven’t decided yet whether to go that route.)
congrats on getting your dreamset. When you said you wanted a monorail i always assumed it was a city/town set. A circular track around a christmas tree would be a good look.
Well the Airport Shuttle monorail is around triple the price so not in my budget lol! And I think I will try to put it around the Christmas tree! 😁

I'm very excited for you to have gotten this set! With the help of a friend who does 3d printing, I got a bunch of straight monorail track printed, and made one for my city. Its by far the highlight of the entire setup! :D
What an amazing Find! I had the airport monorail as a kid and its still a fond memory. Wish my family had not sold all my collection after i left the house
My favorite space minis came from space sets pre-helmet visors. My brother use to turn the smile face towards the back to pretend the blank yellow was the helmet visor.
I got my monorail also from our local bricks and Minifigs and I actually walked away from it twice until I realized it was the Bricklink Limited Skyline Express at msrp, amazing.

This is one of the sets I want to get too. I want to get both of the space monorails and I'm building the unreleased Sea-Tron monorail along with the unreleased sets that went with the theme.

Personally, I find a little bit of yellowing and wear part of the charm and authenticity of the sets.
Adds a bit of a Lego-movie extra reality element to the sets that I quite enjoy.
I'm quite a minimalist and thus don't keep Lego sets for a long time. But I have a few I don't intend to ever sell, and the space monorail is definitely one of them. Second is the yellow castle (I actually got it in the 80s as a child)

Argh! I wanted that set ever since I first saw it in Brick Kicks magazine. My dad would not get it for me because it was the most expensive set ever and my dad was not going to write a check for over a hundred bucks and let me Mail it to Denmark for one set. I'm so jealous!

This is an old shirt lol, probably 8 years old that I got for about $15. Not dressed up, and not intended for Halloween. Just found at the back of my closet lol.
