When James Rolfe in his Nerdsona said “This isn’t a game! This is like some kind of weird college experiment!!” it turns out he was not far from hitting the nail on the head.
It was an experiment! A mad experiment put together by some mad scientist during a time when video game developers were being experimental with budding CD technology.
Funny how years later the once forgotten legacy of Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties will now be available on far more successful platforms than the 3DO.

Years ago I made a short movie that was a hunk of junk. When I was finished with the editing, I called the main actresses and let them know they could download the video and watch it. One of them was shocked. I asked her why and she said, "I've been in about twenty short movies over the last few years, and only two have been completed."
So kudos to this guy for starting and finishing his game. It's much more work than people think.

Plumbers Don't Wear Ties benefits from what I like to call "The Travolta Effect." Basically, if you got folks who are having a good time making a movie/game, then regardless of the objective quality, that transmits to the player, and they're going to have fun too.

"Exploring" has always been one of the most unique series on TH-cam. So many channels cover infamous/bad movies and games and it's clear that their "research" consists of reading a Wikipedia article and maybe the first few results they saw on Google, and ultimately viewers are left feeling hollow because they didn't learn anything new. You're one of the few creators that puts effort into actual research about these niche topics, and it's very much appreciated.

It's very obvious that you put a lot of time and effort into your videos and I've learned so much about very obscure media because of you, so thank you for that. By the way, I always had the slightest suspicion that this game was meant to be intentionally bad because some of the dialogue in the game really seemed to be pointing that out and now, because of you, I know that my suspicions were well founded.@@GoodBadFlicks

I wanted a super Nintendo so bad when I was young. One day my dad showed up with a goldstar 3DO system. I was not thrilled, but he was so excited for the new technology. Once we had it set up I was thrilled, I had a new system that even took CDs! I ended up loving that system. They did so many cool things ( like how you could daisy chain the remotes together to get multiple players ) and so many great games. PO'ed, return fire, Wing Commander, and even PDWT. I can remember playing this game so many times just to see every ending possible. I'm sure I was too young to be playing it, but it's seared into my brain. Good times

I actually admire Mike, having heard this story. Using his money just to 'experiment', knowing up front he wasn't going to spend enough money to make even a decent game. He knew (or at least figured) he wasn't going to get any kind of reasonable ROI, yet he plowed forward full steam, just for the sake of doing it, and injected crazy, good natured ridiculousness in the process! What a gem.

I fell In love with your normal “GoodBadFlicks” videos first and quickly started looking forward to the “forgotten shows/films” series too but man the effort and amount of research you put into these videos is on another level. As I’m sure many of your subscribers do, I also follow the other main so bad it’s good film reviewers or whatever they consider themselves, but your detail is just on another level. You can’t know just how much I appreciate (and I’m sure others do to) the work and time you put into these. If I’m in a good mood it’s a bonus but the days when I’m really struggling as I’m a navy veteran who became an addict, now over a decade clean, but I still struggle with depression and on the bad days when I watch your videos like this it just totally can flip my mood. I was looking up about Adult games after an episode of X-Play on G4 and came across this and, with the very little information I could find, just moved on... then the AVGN episode came out a few years later and I was laughing my ass off just remembering what little I learned about the game back then.

I'm glad you got to do something you've been so eager to do! I get that this is an experimental game, and for that, I applaud it. Without experimental projects that fail, we wouldn't have experimental projects that succeed. It deserves to be remembered. Plumbers don’t wear ties is the gold standard for one of the worst games ever made. It’s bad in a way that is so good where fans begun to appreciate it just how Tommy Wisceau directed The Room which is considered the worst movie of all time but gain notoriety for the fans to love it!

It’s ironic how lowering the barrier to make content didn’t lead to a greater variety for smaller, more fringe groups, but instead made everything more mainstream now.
Seems like everyone is just aiming to go viral and copy each other. While mainstream/hollywood content all feel the same.
Haven’t seen another “kevjumba” or “bo burnham” type channel on youtube, or “half baked” type of movie.

When I saw this title again after so many years I instantly thought; “Oh my god, this could be very well the grandfather of goofy visual novels” and your commentary at the end solidified my thoughts exactly. I love it when people have fun with any media production even if the final product is goofy as heck. In rare cases, the goofy product gets a cult status and that’s how we also got the now legendary official English dub of Ghost Stories.

    "Is this hell?"

For some reason I love the rare offshoots of the Exploring series that covers videogames. Furthermore, I love that this was something special to you Cecil and not just a random game to make a video on.
Unfortunately I never got to play it and I only learned about it from James AVGN episode. But I miss the time when developers use to experiment like this. The technology just wasn't there yet and developers were at their most ingenuitive in finding ways of jumping a head, resulting in FMV and digitised graphics. Sure they weren't perfect but they definitely had their charm. Looking at today we have consoles as powerful as todays computers and most of the AAA games all look the same, with indie devs being the only experimentals.
Thanks for this video Cecil, it was a real treat. The critics absolutely missed the point of this game. It's not the production value that has made this game what it is today. It's the fun and personality that went into this game that makes it so special.

Part and parcel for the 3do at the time. From the guy in Need for Speed (last I heard he worked as a car dealer) to video boardgames like Twisted, there was just so much weirdness that couldn't be had on more established consoles (especially if you didn't have the money for a PC).
Sure, a lot of it was crap, but it was crap that opened your eyes to the possibilities (SGF's LPs of FMV games have been a riot).

Love hearing about little passion projects like this made by people with almost no idea what they were doing. Hell, Evil Dead started out pretty much that way.
Takes me back to making my own short film "The Hog Keeper" for a local film contest when I was back home in Australia in the distant mist-shrouded year of 2019, in the Before Times. It was filmed in about two hours on a budget of about $20. "Starring" myself and a great old friend and filmed by my wife. Music was obtained last moment from a game dev friend. They were tracks he'd made on some old game console music-mixer that had gotten all staticky when he figured out a jerry-rigged way to rip it as music files, as the console had no real support for that. This made the music feel just right to me for the story. All names in credits.
The plot, such as it is, is post-apocalyptic sci-fi.
Had no idea at the time that, a few months later, all kinds of shit were gonna hit the fan in real life. I cherish the film for that reason as well. It's a kind of pre-pandemic time capsule for me.
Everything was spur of the moment as I was leaving Australia three days after hearing about the contest. We just decided to do it, as my reason for being back home in the first place was a depressing one. The script was written by me in about two and a half hours, longer than the actual filming time. The editing took about 7 hours, mainly because I had no idea what I was doing at first.
Oh, it was not accepted into the film contest, probably because the audio is HORRIBLE, along with everything else being horrible, except for the amazing location and the music, and our passion just to get it done (some of which is evident in the film I've been told). Also, apocalyptic sci-fi was probably NOT what they were looking for.
It's on my TH-cam channel if anyone wants to check it out. Oh, BE SURE TO TURN ON SUBTITLES and be careful with headphone volume as the audio is awful!
I believe if you search "The Hog Keeper" it comes up pretty easily, maybe even top of list.
It's 7 minutes long. Enjoy at your own risk.
    Cheers.
