When I was 7 years old, my father took me to see Superman 2 on opening night. My 13 year old brother and his friend went to the theater next door and saw The Cannonball Run. I will never forget standing in a long line with my old man. A line that stretched all along the building, wondering if the film would be sold out by the time we made it to the box office. It's funny, I turn 50 years old this year and my dad's been gone a long time, but this is what I remember like it was yesterday.
"...and the jokes would be neutered." Truer words never spoken. I totally agree that Cannonball Run, along with many movies of the 70s, just couldn't be done, as effective as they were, today. I LOVED Cannonball Run and the Smokey movies. Sharkey's Machine was the first "R" movie I saw (snuck into) as a young boy. Good times...
One of the best ensemble cast movies. Pure fun in a way that can't be done today. And both Joe Kleko and Terry Bradshaw in a film that had nothing to do about football. Edit: Jack Elam stole every scene he was in.
To 10 year old me, Jack Elam's appearances were the funniest damn thing in the world. Well, those and the fart scene in Blazing Saddles. I was easy to entertain, basically.
Originally, it was Hal and Burt's followup 'Hooper' from 1978 that started the "Post Credited" trend, yet thanks to Cannonball Run, Jackie Chan liked the idea so much, he started using it in his own Hong Kong films from then on and it became a contractual obligation from the Japanese market who distributed his films as it was a major highlight of his films there.
I saw this in a packed theater on the Southside of Chicago. Burt Reynolds (and Clint Eastwood) were the undisputed kings of the Southside. The entire theater thought this was the greatest movie of all time. Thank, Cecil. You are awesome.
I've seen the Cannonball Run films dozens upon dozens of times. My brother and I grew up watching these films. So glad you're doing a video on this series.
I was born in ‘78 and I can’t remember a time when this movie wasn’t in my life. Back then, Jackie Chan was my favorite part. I loved the split kick he did and split his pants. The 80s was a great time for serious Burt Reynolds movies. Movies like Stick, Sharky’s Machine, Malone, and Rent-a-Cop were actually pretty good. Great video as always. If I may, I have few requests: Dragon Slayer (1981) Evil Speak Mortuary (Bill Paxton’s first movie) Basket Case.
I was born in 77,all the Burt Reynolds films you listed I've seen and enjoyed,I'm gonna get this film on dvd-SOON.So I can sit back laugh and have GOOD nostalgia about old times.
This was one of my favorite movies to watch with my dad during the 80s. I'd speculate that our favorite team of the theatrical race was the Subaru team that included Jackie Chan. This was, I think, mostly because of the technology that the car had added to it, plus Jackie Chan's character was hilarious, in particularly when he was trying to watch a porn movie while driving, plus his over-zealousness at the end of the grand brawl scene.
Ah, this sure bring back memories. Haven't seen it for over two decades, but I don't have to as I rewatched it so many times in the early nineties I memorized everything down to the tiniest details.
Man I loved this movie as a kid and saw it bretty often with part 2 on german afternoon television, titled "Auf dem Highway ist die Hölle los" (Hell is loose on the Highway). I think Jackie Chan impressed me the most. Gotta watch it again soon. THX for this great Exploring video about it.
Definitely one of my favorite 80s comedies. I've had the outtake reel on my YT channel since 2009. It's one of those classics that just make you laugh every time you see it, and knowing it is based on reel events, gives it an even more interesting aspect.
I noticed you didn't say anything about the stunt woman who is injured during the filming in the crash of the Aston Martin that left her a quadriplegic. Speaking about Burt Reynolds he was great in the insanely underrated mystery Alaska which is a movie you should review
Wow. Thank you so much! This was a favorite of me and my friends in the 80s. I had no idea about the backstory! Going to have to give this a rewatch very soon. And, yes, no reboot. That is, until the conditions are right again for such a feat. 😉
I can remember being 6 years old in 86', sitting on the living room floor, and watching this movie on one of the UHF channels on a Sunday afternoon. I remember thinking, wow, they made a movie just for me? :) I was in love.
I have been curious about the history of this since I watched the movies as a child. As I got older and delved into Hollywood and cinema and came to understand the level star power involved, my curiosity increased. Thank you for enlightening me with your always appreciated humor and insight

Great video Cecil! The Cannonball Run is such a fun time-capsule of a movie. You're right, I don't think there's any way you could make this movie now.

It's funny I read about the recent attempts to break the cross country time record when I was looking up Cannonball Run on youtube a few weeks ago, just out of the blue so perfect timing with this video. Some quick notes, because I love the Needham car flicks. Technically Smokey 2 was the first of his movies that included the blooper reel over the credits. Also something that I enjoyed as a kid, Burt Reynolds breaks the fourth wall in these movies. In Smokey 1 and 2, and the Cannonball Ball Run, Burt will look right down the barrel of the camera and mug to all of us watching. To this day, he has been the only actor, to me anyways, that could pull that off. It just seemed right when he did it.
I watched this movie many times with my mother, who was a big Burt Reynolds fan. Really great memories. Thanks for doing a great job recounting how it got made! Hey, is that my set of Cannonball Cups from an ebay listing???
I remember watching this on TV many times as a kid. They must have sold the TV rights very quickly, because I remember seeing the sequel in the theater. That looks like Roger Corman checking out that car at 1:34.
I got my childhood glasses on ! thanks for the look back at a wacky and fun flick. I think you are right that this film couldn't be done again. it is a time capsule that the child in me is happy to revisit. Keep up the great work !
Oh shit!! Not even watched this video yet and I’m sooo excited!!! Cannonball Run is one of my favourite childhood memories and it’s now become one that I share with my daughters. Thank you so much for this ❤ ok now I’ve said that I’m going to enjoy the video 😊
This was great! I remember watching “The Gumball Rally” as a kid in the theaters when it came out. I recently got the blu ray. It was a blast. Especially seeing Raul Julia and Gary Busey early in their careers. So maybe you could do a video on The Gumball Rally?😉
I definitely remember gumball rally. It was years later when I saw cannonball the movie that was mentioned that came out the same time. It was more of a serious film
I saw the film as a kid in the cinema way back when. Couldn't believe so many stars were all together. I didn't know all this behind the scenes stuff. Incredible! Great research!
Saw just the first and second movies, didn’t know about the 3rd one. Great movie, I loved it when I was a kid. I remember thinking “that’s the most expensive film ever made” due to having so many famous faces (even not recognizing all of the celebrities). Thank you for the video, Cecil!
10:16 That's always been my favorite part's of this film and it's sequel. This film and it's sequel always put a big ole smile on my face as a child and still does to this very day the fun that the stars of both of these films are having is very infectious I actually enjoy both of these films a lot more then the"Smokey and The Bandit" trilogy I do enjoy the first film in that trilogy but the sequels not so much IMHO. Another fantastic job on another installment Cecil R.I.P to Burt,Dom,Roger,Sammy,Dean&Hal Needham for giving us funny action comedies 80's classics.
I love all of your reviews, but you did a fantastic job on this one! One of my favorite films as a child in the 80's that always seemed like a "spiritual" sequel to It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World - different story motivations for sure, but many similaities in cast scope, stunts, and elements of race in the story.
I'm a subscriber to Matt Farrah, VINWiki, and RCR and never would I ever have thought that interest would intersect with GoodBadFlicks. Great job Cecil!
Now this is a perfect example of why I only watch pre 00s movies, they genuine and they were fun. Cannonball run was pretty much a passion project from all involved which is why all the actors gave their unique contributions. And that's what made it great. I believe Cannonball run would be a hit if remade today but they would need to recreate the formula that made it great to begin with. Everything mentioned that would actually be done with a modern production is the reason I don't watch modern films. CGI is lazy and unrealistic, most directors are pretentious auteurs, and a lot of actors are unlikable who expect an exorbitant pay cheque for a phone in performance unless the role is Oscar worthy. Plus if it's a long awaited sequel or remake it will either a straight up parody or too self aware and full of throwbacks and nostalgiabait. Sorry for the rant. Great video Cecil. It was just as fun to see the history of this films production as it was the movie itself.
I love the Cannonball movies. A big bag of fun in film form. And all the firsts that it's credited with are awesome. These and the Bandit movies (yes, I even enjoy the TV flicks) are a time capsule of a great time in filmmaking. Sadly the closest thing to them these days are the Furious movies. And they don't hold a candle to the joyous fun of the earlier films.
Part 7 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is called "Steel Ball Run" I believe is a direct reference form this film since in it the protagonist have to win a race across the US.
The Cannonball Run is what rekindled a lot of love for road racing and performance cars, occurring during the height of the Malaise Era in the late 1970s. If things like the Cannonball Run and trucker convoy protests hadn't been put on it's likely that series like SCCA Trans-Am would've slowly died out, and the Japanese performance cars of the 1980s that everyone loses their minds over wouldn't exist. The original A50 Celica Supra was specifically designed to take advantage of American highways at speeds well above 55MPH after all. I remember back in the day when underground tapes were a thing, my step brother had one of the 2001 Gumball 3000, which was the true successor to the original Cannonball Run until it got turned into a massive commercial venture. Back in 2001 someone was stupid enough to bring a roadgoing version of the Porsche 911 996 GT2 cup car and another ran an imported Skyline R33, both of which were banned imports in the U.S. thanks to the 25 Year Rule. The 1999, 2000, and 2001 Gumball Rallies were part of the holy triumvirate alongside The Fast And The Furious and Need For Speed in igniting a massive wave of street racing and car tuning in the early 2000s. History doesn't repeat, but it often plagiarizes itself.
I know you mentioned Jackie Chan for the 1st Cannonball movie but his partner in the movie is Michael Hui who is Hong Kong Comedy King before Stephen Chow come along. You might know or not know Michael Hui but he and his two younger brothers, Ricky and Sam are known as the Hui Brothers who are well-known in Asia for their performances in movies and singing. Maybe you can check the Hui Brothers' movies like The Private Eyes, Security Unlimited, and Chicken and Duck Talk which everyone in Asia knows these movies. You won't regret watching their movies.
I used to lived in New York State back in the early 1980's, I remember meeting Bert Reynolds after he was finished filming for the day a for the movie Best Friends. I remember Goldie Hawn walking down the street with her entourage getting into her limo and then someone tapping my left shoulder. My mom then ask me "are you gonna go say hi to Bert?" The only things could say was, "You're the guy from cannonball!!!" First time I ever met someone famous.
YAAAASSSSS This film deserves more exposure. I love this film and no one I know has even heard of it. My mom had recorded it to vhs off the tv in the nineties and as a kid I watched it over and over❤❤. Now I’m grown up I listen to the intro song and “Like a Cannonball” by Menudo while I drive about 😂❤❤❤

For me it was THE TERMINATOR i was 8 years old at the time. My mom rented me entire Friday The 13th and NightMare On Elm Street series when i was 11 years old. I never stopped using VHS and cassette tapes.
The bloopers section was groundbreaking. I remember watching it in the theater, and the bloopers were probably the most talked about part of the movie.
Incredible! The Cannonball Run!! I never knew! And with such amazing casting! Especially Burt Reynolds & Dom DeLuise !! These guys were part of my childhood! I'll never forget them! This movie does seem like fun! A MUST buy! I definitely agree with that last statement. The Cannonball Run would never work today. Everything they were able to do worked perfectly during the time it came out! Heck, that's 90% of films that can work back then, but never today. Which is one of the many reasons is why I can't stand Hollywood remakes. The originals will always be the best. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll definitely be picking up The Cannonball Run!
Agreed this is a great film. I probably watched it as much I I watched "Star Wars" when I had cable. "I can't drive 55" was a good song. Sammy Hagar wanted to be known as the "Heavy Metal Kid". He never played heavy metal. Leave that to Metalica. Thank you for this. I wanna watch it again. Arigatou.🤣💘
A fun movie from my childhood. I especially liked Jackie Chan and the two hot girls of course... Didn't know all the history behind it, very interesting. There was that time when some of the Jackass boys participated in a Cannonball Run in Europe and it turns out being in a car for endless hours is quite boring... Congratulations! Your videos could easily run next to tv documentaries. A consistent mark of quality!
Great video but one big thing missing from this: A stuntwoman named Heidi Von Beltz was injured during a stunt involving the Aston Martin and was left paralyzed from the neck down.
Great fun movie, so hard for Hollwood to do nowadays!! And such a compelling history behind it!! Great as usual, Cecil!!! Thanx!!! Also, Reynolds must be the only one who hates Boogie Nights, the first great film from one of the best current american auteurs!
This is one of those movies that no matter how many times you see it, it’s just as enjoyable as the first time.

Thanks!
You could tell they were having fun. These people genuinely liked each other.
One of the all time classics for my brother and I. This movie is so much fun with so many classic lines. Thanks so much for doing this one!!
YOOOO!!! the drop of this video could not be better timed! thanks, as always, man. these videos are always well done and good for info and laffs.
:)
Oh shit!! Not even watched this video yet and I’m sooo excited!!! Cannonball Run is one of my favourite childhood memories and it’s now become one that I share with my daughters. Thank you so much for this ❤ ok now I’ve said that I’m going to enjoy the video 😊
Thank you!
This was great! I remember watching “The Gumball Rally” as a kid in the theaters when it came out. I recently got the blu ray. It was a blast. Especially seeing Raul Julia and Gary Busey early in their careers. So maybe you could do a video on The Gumball Rally?😉
YES! I would love an episode about the Gumball Rally. Raul Julia's best movie ever, lol
Thanks for watching!
Love this series and learning about all this cool stuff, whether it be about movies I know or not. Thx 👍
Thanks!
I'm a subscriber to Matt Farrah, VINWiki, and RCR and never would I ever have thought that interest would intersect with GoodBadFlicks. Great job Cecil!
Thanks!
Great Movies, all of them.
I have a soft spot for Speed Zoen, aka Canadian Cannonball.
Matt Frewer and John Candy were Gold in it!
Thanks for watching!
This was such a fun film series, but all those race movies were so great to watch!
Part 7 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is called "Steel Ball Run" I believe is a direct reference form this film since in it the protagonist have to win a race across the US.
I love this channel. Always an education, and highly entertaining. Anything comming up about obscure films like Thunder Run or Sisters of Death?
Thanks! Nothing on them anytime soon but lots of other obscure movies
This one's a Good Good Flick :D
Thanks for your amazing work, as always!
Thanks for watching!
Again you’ve outdone yourself with another gem.
Thanks!
Now I’m grown up I listen to the intro song and “Like a Cannonball” by Menudo while I drive about 😂❤❤❤
I just LOVE your "Exploring" videos! Even for movies I never intend to watch myself or have no interest in, your videos ABOUT them are like the very best of the DVD commentary tracks. Videos like this are why I subscribe to your channel. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Need to see this movie.
Great! Video a childhood favourite. Will you be covering Honky Tonk Freeway in the future a good story on that movie failure.
Thanks!
Great music too, love that little Menudo tune.
I didn't know anything about this. Fascinating. Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
The 1st movie my dad rented was Cannonball Run (with the VCR in the suitcase).
Valley Girl was the othere
For me it was THE TERMINATOR i was 8 years old at the time. My mom rented me entire Friday The 13th and NightMare On Elm Street series when i was 11 years old. I never stopped using VHS and cassette tapes.
The bloopers section was groundbreaking. I remember watching it in the theater, and the bloopers were probably the most talked about part of the movie.
We had this on the same vhs tape as Halloween 3. It saw a lot of action!
What a freaking amazing video man you never make a dud
Thank you!
This was fantastic. I hope to see more Exploring episodes soon.
Thanks! I have a lot more planned, they just time longer to produce
Incredible! The Cannonball Run!! I never knew! And with such amazing casting! Especially Burt Reynolds & Dom DeLuise
Arigatou.🤣💘
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Im glad you exploring this movies
Its has influences one of my favourite manga
Jojo bizzare adventure part7:steel ball run
I love this movie, and this deep dive was legit fascinating.
Thanks!
Thank you!
I watch these movies several times a year. Have been since I was a kid.
Hey, Cecil! My beau loves this flick & the story behind it, lol. You should have, like, a contest where someone could win one of your tee shirts
Thanks!
