@@GoodBadFlicks I've just watched the whole thing without the intention to do so when realizing how long it is. Probably your production is beyond great! Applaud you, sir! Btw, I guess you already know, but Arecibo has been collapsed. The dream has ended.

It partly seems like he just wanted to make a film himself. While it would have been nice to incorporate more of his ideas, I get the impression that he was a bit less practical. It seemed like a lot of them are turned down due to expense or difficulty in making them work and he didn't seem very understanding of those factors.
... Like Hollywood wishes he'd do. It's amazing how stupid the corporate machine is in studios. They want money. Money comes from making stuff people like. They want recognition for art, too, but not as much as they want money. So when something is made and people like it, they try to figure out what the formula is. There is no formula. Especially when something is a creative piece of art, rather than merely mindless product. When they try to apply formula to recapture the success of the improbable works of art they accidentally allow to happen, it's even worse. I feel like they've given up entirely on anything other than profit profit profit. It's so depressing. Money is all that matters. Not just making it. Making ALL OF IT.

DUDE! I remember when this movie came out. I wasn’t allowed to watch it with my dad or stepmom. I never watched it till a month ago because it’s free on youtube right now. It was great. There were a few corny moments but overall I loved it. I can’t wait to watch this video. I’ve watched your exploring The Mummy video several times.
Species is one of my favourite guilty pleasures because of Natasha Henstridge. Whenever it was on TV I would make a point to watch it (or at least checked back and forth if I was watching something else).
My dad was in this movie! Kinda. He was a conductor for Union Pacific Railroad for forty years. At one point there's a train in the movie and - not that you ever see him but - he was the one driving it! I'm basically famous.
Great video. I had no idea it was almost 45 minutes long.. When I saw Species, the biggest problems I had with it were that they could have cut out the caption explaining was S.E.T.I. was, since Fitch explains it during his meeting with the hunters, and started with a shot of the sign outside, with the alarms blaring, and the audience wondering why soldiers are chasing a little girl; I wasn't clear what they were going for with Fitch freezing up when the creature gets loose in the lab; and the Alfred Molina character hooking up with some strange woman when he'd just been hunting a creature that had been mating with people.
Any movie that features Giger’s work will always be tied to Alien because that’s where most people were first exposed to it. His work is so specific that it’s almost the Alien universe itself. You could even make a Species/Alien crossover and it would hold its own.
I always get a laugh from the scene when Forest Whitaker goes into the train car where Sil killed the conductor and he says "Something terrible happened here." Well, duh!
One of the first Hollywood movies i watched back in 2002. Over the years somewhere in my sub conscious I thought It had something special about it. You just cemented that feeling.
Eh, I disagree on some of Giger's ideas for this one. Glowing metal alien and ghost train are interesting concepts, but don't really work for a movie that is, essentially, a hunt for an escaped serial killer with an apocalyptic sci-fi twist. Little too 'high weirdness' if that makes sense. Would have worked in a more standard space horror movie though.
The train actually fits really well into Sil's transformation, but you have to be a bit Freudian about it. The train is this big powerful sex drive that is waking up inside her and threatens to destroy her if she doesn't mate.
Me and my buddy watched this Saturday and we really enjoyed it! Another fantastic exposition. We both found it Intresting about Giger being ghosted by the studio basically around every corner.
the moment when Sil's baby starts to grow and it's arm is getting long and he starts to bang it on the rock has always fascinated me and creeped me out .

Gieger really was such a genius, every terrestrial limitation only complicated his vision. I only wonder if with today's budget and technology we could do his work on this a justice. Your mention of the Arecibo observatory right around the time when they announced it is gonna close down is a bittersweet sendoff to a science giant.
I mentioned it at the very end because while I was working on this, I found out it was being decommissioned
@@GoodBadFlicks As a Puerto Rican, I appreciate this.
Sucks
Didn't know this movie had such a interesting backstory. I knew about the H.R. Giger designs, but never knew it went this deep. This is probably one of my favorite alien movies and am glad to see it getting the GoodBadFlicks treatment. Theres so many ideas in this movie i loved and the concept behind the alien. It would have been cool as hell to see Giger's full vision.
found this channel recently. The production quality is insane! thanks for all the interesting info, you're awesome!
Thank you so much! :)
@@GoodBadFlicks I've just watched the whole thing without the intention to do so when realizing how long it is. Probably your production is beyond great! The details are not overly technical, the balance between tech and social is well done, the pacing is great. 42 mins just passed by, like it was only 10 and learned more about his film (I remember to watch it in movie) I have never thought I want. Applaud you, sir!
Btw, I guess you already know, but Arecibo has been collapsed. The dream has ended.
Amen. I'd gotten tired of most channels that do this _kind_ of thing because they tend to do some research, then pad with fluff. I'm new from today, watched three so far. One, he couldn't _make_ me care about. But they're really very well done.
Giger: Please don't make this like Alien
MGM, at literally every possible opportunity: How 'bout I do anyway?
I always amazed to learn just how involved Giger was in so many aspects of the he worked on. He didn't just make a design, drop it off and leave.
It partly seems like he just wanted to make a film himself. While it would have been nice to incorporate more of his ideas, I get the impression that he was a bit less practical. It seemed like a lot of them are turned down due to expense or difficulty in making them work and he didn't seem very understanding of those factors.
He was also involved in the PC games that used his art.
I REMEMBER THE PUNCHING TOUNG FROM WHEN I WAS A KID!!!!! I don't remember where I saw it. Just that it was on a tv and I was in the room for that one scene, then was kicked out after that death. Thanks for bringing back repressed memories GoodBadFlicks.
Absolutely incredible take on the history of _Species_ . Thank you so much for doing this. As a big fan of the first film, I found this to be very insightful, with information I didn't know and photos I'd never seen. Top-notch work!
Awesome, thank you!
Well now I'm sure somewhere deep inside Kingsley enjoyed killing Madsen in BloodRayne
I smiled when I heard how Kingsley was being an absolute c*** to most people on set... except the young super model! go figure!! *lol*

How to make 43 minutes and 23 seconds of my life disappear in complete and utter entertainment and awe: Hire Cecil. Amazing job as always man. I love your work so much.
It's sad the dish is in disrepair but sometimes things happen for a very valid reason :D
Natasha was simply stunning as you said in this movie but I disagree on seeing her now making me feel old. My aching knees, lower back, inability to hold new information and having to go to the bathroom every two minutes when drinking beer, makes me feel old!
Thanks you for all your hard work Cecil :D
I actually super love the first and second movies. Giger was such an incredibly interesting person and I didnt realize how much he was involved in the movies. I even watched a documentary on him and didn’t realize it! I would have loved to see the original script shot and more Giger. Really well done video! Thank you!
Awwww Henstridge driving Ben Kingsley around on her bike handles is the sweetest thing. Also, To this day me and my husband still quote "~~EVIL DOCTOR~~" from She Spies.
Dennis Feldman also wrote "The Golden Child" and co-wrote "Just One Of The Guys" with Jeff Franklin ("Full House").
Thank you SO much for covering this one. Also, I gotta give Nat Henstridge further props for being so straight forward when she auditioned, saying she had no clue what she was doing. That is pretty damn gutsy.
Thanks for watching!
She was definitely right about not knowing what she was doing. She’s a lousy actress.
Been a huge HR Giger fan since before Alien(yes I'm that old) and It's soo sad that Ridley Scott was the only director who could get all the best out of this one in a century artist! It's a good movie thou. Great work C., u are the best!
But Scott sort of watered down and diluted Gigers visions. He made an ugly alien when most of gigers lifeforms are like beautiful succubus
Boi
@@Getwright- because they want to make ultimate life form, not ultimate beautiful succubi
11:14 I’d completely forgotten Michelle Williams as the young actor who played Sil, guess it’s been that long since watching Species
I didn’t know about all the film background drama. Thanks for giving me the further information regarding Species.
I hope GoodBadFlicks does more Species videos called Exploring Species 2, Exploring Species 3 and Exploring Species: Awakening. I hope he makes em.
Nothing makes me happier than when I see a new video from you. The videos are put together perfectly and there is so much information. I'm not sure how you do it but it's very impressive.
I would love someone to make Giger's ghost train concept into its own film somewhere. That's a fantastic concept and would be interesting to see it fleshed out.
I agree, this was the wrong project for it. It needs a film focused on it.
@@davidjames579 Yeah, let's call it "Fleshpiercer".
when sil went up to the hotel cashier and asked “where can i find a man?” i felt that
When Molina's character said "Oh my god... huh... Well i enjoyed that immensely" i bet a lot of audience members felt that.
I remember this coming out on VHS in my grandparents video store. Really does make you feel old to think of how long ago that was. Great episode man, keep them coming and we will keep watching.

How can he steal the title of the prequel... Pre-prequel?🤣
On The Origin Of The Species
DUDE! I remember when this movie came out. I wasn’t allowed to watch it with my dad or stepmom. I never watched it till a month ago because it’s free on youtube right now. It was great. There were a few corny moments but overall I loved it. I can’t wait to watch this video. I’ve watched your exploring The Mummy video several times.
great video as usual. underrated youtube channel. cheers from Brazil
I love these videos! So much background info and movie effects techniques! Even studio politics and bickering. Brilliant!
Species is one of my favourite guilty pleasures because of Natasha Henstridge. Whenever it was on TV I would make a point to watch it (or at least checked back and forth if I was watching something else).
Giger sounds like he would have made, possible one of the best looking and violent horror movies in existence.
Another solid video, well done sir 👊
Loved this video so much!!! I LOVE hearing all the back stories and info about different movies ESPECIALLY movies i love
this movie is so re-watchable. The effects still hold up rather well and the young Natasha Henstridge is stunning in the title role. 🍿😎
Any movie that features Giger’s work will always be tied to Alien because that’s where most people were first exposed to it. His work is so specific that it’s almost the Alien universe itself. You could even make a Species/Alien crossover and it would hold its own.
I'm "thinking this was a great video", then I look at the time bar and I'm only half way through the video.
suddenly joy fills my heart
Your (I'll call them short films) have always been very professional. I have a sweet time watching them. Never stop please.
I always get a laugh from the scene when Forest Whitaker goes into the train car where Sil killed the conductor and he says "Something terrible happened here." Well, duh!
THIS is the kind of deep dive that makes me love this channel. Keep it up. will be sending links to all my (irl) friends.
Honestly, I would have loved a fish hook tongue thing. That sounds so cool
Yeah, you get the feeling Giger wanted the ghost train in the film simply because he thought of it, whether it fit in the movie or not.
@@gaminawulfsdottir3253 When better to use it than during the nightmare of a person on a train?
@@nexviper That still doesn't mean it fits the rest of the movie.
The train actually fits really well into Sil's transformation, but you have to be a bit Freudian about it. The train is this big powerful sex drive that is waking up inside her and threatens to destroy her if she doesn't mate.
@@larsegholmfischmann6594 Even so, you have to make an effort to shoehorn it in where it doesn't really fit with anything else in the movie.
Sil's monster form WAS beautiful... and terrifying. I hope Giger was happy in the end.
A good movie to do would be Jet Lee's "Unleashed" . I think one of the most underrated performances by Jet Li ever.

H.R Giger is the master of all creatures before Stan Winston. I love his work.
I feel like I've finally found the content creator I've been waiting for! You're the only one who seems to remember great films like Logan's Run, The Hidden and Food of the Gods! I really, really, really enjoy all the back story information you provide. I am missing your treatment on movies like C.H.U.D., Mimic, The Toxic Avenger or Robocop. or Maybe even newer movies like Attack the Block or The Host.
Gieger really was such a genius, every terrestrial limitation only complicated his vision. I only wonder if with today's budget and technology we could do his work on this a justice. When they told him no, he was disgusted by their short sightedness and did it anyway to show them how it can be done.
The train thing was stupid no matter cool it looked.
