I echo Christine Givens comment below completely! You have a calm, concise, and methodical way of teaching that is so refreshing compared to thousands of other videos out there. I'm so glad I came across this and thank you for taking the time to help us all.
Thank You so much!!! I must tell you I could have not started this sweater without your fantastic video! I tried to understand the pattern just reading it and could't make any sence out of it., that is until I saw your video. I must say, why the pattern maker didn't include any how to do videos herself is beyond me. Your video is a game changer .
Wow, thank you! I hope you are able to make your way through the project without too much frustration. I agree that video tutorials are such a great resource! Thank you for watching and leaving your kind feedback :)
Wow, thank you for such a clear tutorial. I've got the pattern and yarn to knit the Field Beret and Mittens for my daughter in law and was feeling a little daunted. Now I'm just excited to get started! You have such a calm approach and soothing voice!
MARK! You’re my newest hero. ❤ This was an amazing tutorial. My new go-to channel for clear and precise instruction without fingernail polish in the way. Painted nails are lovely but in knitting videos I find them annoying and distracting. Your voice is so calming as well. Love this. So happy I found you. Thanks for taking the time to share your talents.
Thank you for this tutorial, but also for being inclusive and mentioning your needle size in US and metric. It's such a simple thing to do, and yet so very, very rare.

Mark your video was so helpful. The written pattern is difficult and you have calmed my rattled nerves and given me the courage to move forward with the yoke. Thank you so much.
Mark, this tutorial is an answer to prayer, and also just about the best tutorial I've ever seen on TH-cam. Thank you so much! The first time I found you you were wearing the Field sweater and I immediately wanted to make it, and now I know how to make those tricky grain stitches. THANK YOU!!!
I am amazed at your abilities I have been knitting for many years and still cannot seem to get a sweater done. There are people who are talented and people who are not. I do enjoy your channel.
Ha. Found this! Thank you. I'm so glad to have found your tutorial for the Field Sweater I didn't even know I HAD to HAVE until I saw it on your other video. Again, THANKS!
Merci infiniment pour vos explications. Bien que je ne suis pas très à l'aise avec la langue anglaise, la video est très compréhensible et accessible aux non-anglophones. 👍👍🧡💛💜😻
Wow this was such a great tutorial, thank you so much! I cannot read knitting patterns very well yet.. I NEVER would have gotten this right if i tried without seeing it 😅.
You are such a patient instructor, Mark. Such clear instructions. So happy to have you teaching our growing group of You Tubers. I want to knit this sweater perhaps the middle of summer so it will be ready for fall.
Thank you for that feedback! It's definitely a challenging pattern, but once you practice the grain stitch, everything should make sense in context! Make sure to use stitch markers AND keep track of your progress on your pattern as you work the project! Most of all, have fun!

This is a lovely texture and I felt that I could master doing it after watching your detailed tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. ❤
Well this was very interesting. Great break down on how to knit the grains. I’ve seen the sweater on other podcasters. It is a beautiful sweater and I love the mohair addition on yours! Don’t know if I’ll ever have the courage to knit it. If I do I’ll be watching this over and over till I get it! Thanks 💗💗🧶🧶
You are an excellent teacher. I love the slow mode of the knitting you do. You are very clean and conquise. I knit connential like you do with the same finger positions.
Thanks Mark! Fantastic video! I'm about to embark on a spinning project for this sweater. I didn't realize how complicated the grain stitch might be, but your video is a great tutorial ❤
Oh wow! I'd love to see what you end up spinning! The grain definitely seems complicated, or involved, at the start. But if you take time to practice on a swatch, it will make much more sense! Have fun :)
I really enjoyed this tutorial, and am using the grain stitch to make myself a hat. It’s turning out beautifully! This was a great tutorial and I hope you decide to make more because you’re good at it! ❤
Thank you for taking the time to share your talents and skills. Both will aid me in my completion of this sweater. I now know to hold time and patience in completing this garment. Well done.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber. Loved your video of Drama in the yarn store. I get the same treatment sometimes in yarn shops I visit. In those cases, I just walk out. Question. Do you think it would be a good idea to add steeking rows to the Field Sweater to make a cardigan? I love knitting in the round. I would love this in a cardigan.
Yes I do! They have a cardigan pattern - but it's knit flat. I found the wrong side rows to be an added layer of confusion - so I added a steek channel to mine! It was a successful adaptation. That cardigan is almost complete and I'm happy with how it's turned out so far!
Hi 👋
I'm knitting the slipover, and this was so handy to work the grains.
I've completed the repeats for the grains and the next row has sl1pw, 2r, k2 .... what is the 2r please?
What row is that instruction in? I double checked my copy of the pattern and didn't see that abbreviation at first glance!
@MakerMarkKnits in the slipover, it's row 28 and then similarly 1r in row 30.
What can you do if you make a mistake and drop a part of a grain either on the current or a past row?
Great question! There's no glamorous solution -- if you find that you've made the mistake a row back, just try to work the remaining loops in the most discreet way possible. If there is extra fiber from a dropped yarn over, you can give it a twist or two to tighten up the stitch.
If you realize you've dropped a loop or two in the moment, you can isolate the stitch by undoing the grain completely, before redoing the stitch. Use an extra set of needles or a small crochet hook to pull up the three (or five) loops of the grain before returning to the row at hand.
Let me know if you need further explanation and I can make a video.
In my own sweater, I had moments where I realized that I had dropped a loop of a grain, or had made a small grain where a large grain was instructed -- and these spots are NOT noticeable in the finished garment. I hope this helps!
Thank you for this tutorial, you saved my project! (",)
Hooray! I'm SO happy to hear that :)
In which round we should add colour B
There are instructions for using color b at the end of the pattern. Your carry along, or color B, should be used any time you are making a grain stitch. If you have a portion of knit stitches between the grains, that's where you'll only use color A (by itself)
I would like to make the cardigan… itwill be knitted flat ..I worry about theses stiches I will have to do on the wrong side ….
