I have been working on the Field Mitts and have been having such a time, not with the pattern, but struggling with tight grain stitches being difficult to slip or knit. I will try to knit them looser. If I can manage the mitts, I’d love to knit the sweater and beret! They are so beautiful! Thank you for this easy to understand tutorial!

Fantastic video. Thank you! Patty Lyons has a game changing way of doing K3tog. I usually find trying to K3tog really difficult to get the needle through. She suggests you knit 2 tog and then slip the two stitches knitted together, purl wise back to the left needle. Using the right needle, pass the next stitch over the knitted k2tog. slip the completed stitch back to the right needle! So much less struggling.
What a great workaround. The same construction but without the struggle. I am going to mention that on my next podcast for anyone who hasnt seen this comment. Thank you for sharing. :)
Thank you for this tutorial. I am so glad that you were not knitting in continental stitch. The tutorials I have previously watched for this sweater were taught in continental stitch, and so difficult for me to “see.” This one is very helpful!!
Thanks so much Karen. It is quite hard to learn something new and at the same time, have to think about how that would look if you were holding the yarn in your right hand. It is good to have videos for different styles of knitting, so I am glad that I am able to bring something of value. :)
Thanks Carol. Hopefully it isnt too different knitting back and forth. Most of the "action" happens on alternate rows so i think working flat shouldnt make the grains any harder to make or complete. :)

Or, alternatively, the Sorrel, but I do like this one better. I'm on the bustier side and don't really like how the Sorrel looks on bustier people.
I think you could totally wear either. On ravelry, I have seen Sorrel on bustier people and I think it looks great. Sorrel is definitely the quicker and easier pattern. But both are lovely and I am sure you would be happy with either one. :)

Dear Tash Thank you so much for your time spent creating these tutorials. I purchased the pattern in my mother tongue, danish, but because I am a relatively new knitter, it has been slightly daunting. You make it look like child's play. Although I am not fooled into thinking that it will be for me, it does encourage me to think that it may just be possible. Being Scandinavian, I am used to nordic style knitting. Nevertheless your tips are invaluable. Lastly I can't refrain from commenting on the joy it is to hear it all explained in australian english, as i grew up partly in Bendigo, Vic. So I enjoy the light in your beautiful home, which is so typically Australian. 🎉 I do have a bit of trouble balancing my cable needle. The stitches tend to slip off. Do you know any tip to get around this?
Thank you so much for your lovely comments Christina. The only tip i would have is using a cable needle that has a dip in it like a V cable needle. Or perhaps a J cable needle. I’m trying to do the sweater… and I find the instructions vague to say the least… your video is very useful and I now understand about the 5 stitches being made of of the two ‘grains’… what is still confusing me, is where the yo comes from before working the second grain ? In your video the yo is quite obviously already there after you’ve completed the first grain. I’d be very grateful for advice. Thank you
I believe the cardigan pattern has been released. I actually dont have that pattern so i can't speak to the content. If i had to guess, making and collapsing the grains woudl happen on the knit side and the other rows would be similar to the sweater but with purling instead of knitting. I'm sorry i cant be more specific but I actually dont own the pattern for the cardigan. I dont wear a lot of cardigans so hadnt actually intended to purchase that pattern.

Hi there. I did a tubular cast on. There are a number of ways to do a tubular cast on but the way i did it was Judy's Magic Cast On for the full amount of stitches, knit one row and then knit a stitch from one needle and purl from the other alternating. The neckline has enough stretch but is stable.
Hi there. I did a sample piece a while back and now I have finally started the sweater. I gave a query about the Sizes after you finish the ribbing. There are actually 9 sizes but when it comes to the increase, only Size 5-9 are given. I am doing the 4th size and need to end up with 135 stitches before the Field pattern starts. I can’t figure out how many increases I need to do before I start the Inc round of k2,yo,k2. If you can clarify this I’d be very grateful.
Hello! I am knitting the Field Cardigan and in the english pattern at row 11 I got stuk. At the end does it say that after knitting up to the marker you should knit additional stitches that are not there?? I´ve lokked in the Danish pattern and the extra stiches are not included in that pattern? I´m looking forward to knit this cardigan, it´s a lovely pattern!
Hi Christina I have just had a look at Round 11 of the pattern. As I read it, Round 11 finishes with a cable. You put the grain on the cable needle, knit the next 2 sts and then knit the grain together. Are you saying you dont have those 2 sts to knit that form part of the cable? At the end of Round 10, you slip the grain and then knit 2. It should be those two sts that you are knitting as part of the cable. I hope that helps.
3rd row of short row turns. When you knit the 3rd row after the second turn you knit beyond the first turn by 6 stitches. Do you knit the first double stitch together or what do you do with the double stitch. Thanks, Pat
Also, in your video of making the grains, you show holding your thumb down to hold the yarn over loosely. Also do this on the yarn over loop, and in the Large grain hold the loop loosely with your thumb on all 5 stitches. I had absolutely o trouble knitting all 5 stitches together. Yes. Just for demo. The sweater is knit in the round so you just continue on to the start of round but when I am demonstrating with a swatch knitting flat, I have to carry that yarn in the back to get back to the start of the row/round. Hope that helps. :)
I can do a video on the grain repeat for Round 9. I should be able to post that later today. It involves creating a couple of increases around the grain.

I need help w/ row 5. There is a *yo in the beginning. At the end of instructions it says*to*till M, yo. I am confused. Is that last yo the beginning of row 5 only or do I need to do a 2nd yo at end of row 5??? Thank you for any help😅. MA
Hi there. I demonstrate Round 5 at 11 minutes into the video. You only do a YO at the start of each section. No extra yarn over at the end of the round. I hope that helps.

In this sweater, which is knit in the round, you never turn to purl. So sliding my work in the swatch mimics having knit all the way around and come to the stitches again in the same way that you would when knitting in the round. I hope that helps.
Yes The cables aren’t a problem It’s the directions for round 11 in the cardigan I think the directions were from the “in the round” and cut and pasted into the cardigan. Do you have the pattern in cardigan?
Directions say to *K1, slip next 2 it’s to cable in back, k the grain tog, slip purl-wise wyib, place grain on cable in front, k2, k the grain tog tbl * Repeat from * to * till 1 st before M, K1 front, K2, K the 3 st in the grain tog tbl*, repeat from * to * till 1 st before M, k1

Hiya. I am trying to do the beret with the field pattern. Either I lost my mind or I have gone totally brain dead. I find this pattern (beret) really badly written. I for the life of me can not understand how to do this hat. Has anyone knit this hat already? I looked on Ravelry but no real help there. It is absolutely not written well, and seems to have no logic. It would help if there would be a chart, but working stitch by stitch does not give the results needed, I keep having missing stitches, or stitches that seemingly vanish because the wording is not right. I wanted to knit this beret for my daughter in law for Christmas, but for now will pick another model. The beret is horribly explained. I wonder if this designer had English test knitters… So frustrated right now…
I am so sorry you are having such a hard time with this pattern. I have only knit the sweater version and i know it was not the easiest for me to follow. Unfortunately I dont have the beret pattern so i cant offer any direct help. Have you tried messaging the designer or any of the other people on ravelry who have knit it? Perhaps others here might be able to help.
Hey there, I’m not a beginner and just started this beret as well. I can’t even figure out how make the gauge because the field stitch is not formally explained for testing my wool. I agree this pattern is not ideal. As I paid for the pattern I would at least expect a small section saying : Field stitch. Row 1 : (…) row 2 (…) - Row 4 (…), repeat these four rows. But thanks to your video I could figure out a way! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your time spent creating these tutorials. I purchased the pattern in my mother tongue, danish, but because I am a relatively new knitter, it has been slightly daunting.
You make it look like child's play. Although I am not fooled into thinking that it will be for me, it does encourage me to think that it may just be possible.
Being Scandinavian, I am used to nordic style knitting. Nevertheless your tips are invaluable.
Lastly I can't refrain from commenting on the joy it is to hear it all explained in australian english, as i grew up partly in Bendigo, Vic. So I enjoy the light in your beautiful home, which is so typically Australian. 🎉
I do have a bit of trouble balancing my cable needle. The stitches tend to slip off. Do you know any tip to get around this?
Thank you so much for your lovely comments Christina. The only tip i would have is using a cable needle that has a dip in it like a V cable needle. Or perhaps a J cable needle. Hi there. I’m trying to do the sweater… and I find the instructions vague to say the least… your video is very useful and I now understand about the 5 stitches being made of of the two ‘grains’… what is still confusing me, is where the yo comes from before working the second grain ? In your video the yo is quite obviously already there after you’ve completed the first grain. I’d be very grateful for advice.

Thank you for the information. With this pattern, how do you knit a cardigan?
I believe the cardigan pattern has been released. I actually dont have that pattern so i can't speak to the content. If i had to guess, making and collapsing the grains woudl happen on the knit side and the other rows would be similar to the sweater but with purling instead of knitting. I'm sorry i cant be more specific but I actually dont own the pattern for the cardigan. I dont wear a lot of cardigans so hadnt actually intended to purchase that pattern.

Hi there. I did a tubular cast on. There are a number of ways to do a tubular cast on but the way i did it was Judy's Magic Cast On for the full amount of stitches, knit one row and then knit a stitch from one needle and purl from the other alternating. I did a video on this here. th-cam.com/video/yPHicCzJC-k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_50t0kSQIjUPRD82 There are other Tubular Cast On Methods that you may prefer but this is what i used for my Field Sweater. The neckline has enough stretch but is stable.
Hi there. I did a sample piece a while back and now I have finally started the sweater. I gave a query about the Sizes after you finish the ribbing. There are actually 9 sizes but when it comes to the increase, only Size 5-9 are given. I am doing the 4th size and need to end up with 135 stitches before the Field pattern starts. I can’t figure out how many increases I need to do before I start the Inc round of k2,yo,k2. If you can clarify this I’d be very grateful.

Hello! I am knitting the Field Cardigan and in the english pattern at row 11 I got stuk. At the end does it say that after knitting up to the marker you should knit additional stitches that are not there?? I´ve lokked in the Danish pattern and the extra stiches are not included in that pattern?
I´m looking forward to knit this cardigan, it´s a lovely pattern!

I have just had a look at Round 11 of the pattern. As I read it, Round 11 finishes with a cable. You put the grain on the cable needle, knit the next 2 sts and then knit the grain together. Are you saying you dont have those 2 sts to knit that form part of the cable?
At the end of Round 10, you slip the grain and then knit 2. It should be those two sts that you are knitting as part of the cable. I hope that helps.

3rd row of short row turns. When you knit the 3rd row after the second turn you knit beyond the first turn by 6 stitches. Do you knit the first double stitch together or what do you do with the double stitch.

You treat the double stitch as one stitch and knit that stitch together. Hope that helps. :)
Also, in your video of making the grains, you show holding your thumb down to hold the yarn over loosely. Also do this on the yarn over loop, and in the Large grain hold the loop loosely with your thumb on all 5 stitches. I had absolutely o trouble knitting all 5 stitches together.

Yes. Just for demo. The sweater is knit in the round so you just continue on to the start of round but when I am demonstrating with a swatch knitting flat, I have to carry that yarn in the back to get back to the start of the row/round. Hope that helps. :)

I need help w/ row 5. There is a *yo in the beginning. At the end of instructions it says*to*till M, yo. I am confused. Is that last yo the beginning of row 5 only or do I need to do a 2nd yo at end of row 5??? Thank you for any help😅. MA
Hi there. I demonstrate Round 5 at 11 minutes into the video. You only do a YO at the start of each section. No extra yarn over at the end of the round. I hope that helps.

In this sweater, which is knit in the round, you never turn to purl. So sliding my work in the swatch mimics having knit all the way around and come to the stitches again in the same way that you would when knitting in the round. I hope that helps.

I think the directions were from the “in the round” and cut and pasted into the cardigan.

Directions say to *K1, slip next 2 it’s to cable in back, k the grain tog, slip purl-wise wyib, place grain on cable in front, k2, k the grain tog tbl *
Repeat from * to * till 1 st before M, K1 front, K2, K the 3 st in the grain tog tbl*, repeat from * to * till 1 st before M, k1
I only have 2 markers to indicate the 7 stitches at each end for the button band.

Hiya. I am trying to do the beret with the field pattern. Either I lost my mind or I have gone totally brain dead. I find this pattern (beret) really badly written. I for the life of me can not understand how to do this hat. Has anyone knit this hat already? I looked on Ravelry but no real help there. It is absolutely not written well, and seems to have no logic. It would help if there would be a chart, but working stitch by stitch does not give the results needed, I keep having missing stitches, or stitches that seemingly vanish because the wording is not right. I wanted to knit this beret for my daughter in law for Christmas, but for now will pick another model. The beret is horribly explained. I wonder if this designer had English test knitters… So frustrated right now…
I am so sorry you are having such a hard time with this pattern. I have only knit the sweater version and i know it was not the easiest for me to follow. Unfortunately I dont have the beret pattern so i cant offer any direct help.
Have you tried messaging the designer or any of the other people on ravelry who have knit it? Perhaps others here might be able to help.

Hey there, I’m not a beginner and just started this beret as well. I can’t even figure out how make the gauge because the field stitch is not formally explained for testing my wool. I agree this pattern is not ideal. As I paid for the pattern I would at least expect a small section saying : Field stitch. Row 1 : (…) row 2 (…) - Row 4 (…), repeat these four rows. But thanks to your video I could figure out a way! Thank you!
