I have only just found your channel and I love your videos. I am 75, and find them so relevant. Why should looking good be only for the young in age and not for the young at heart. Can you imagine if there would come a time in your life when it wasn't appropriate to be well dressed and current (not trendy!) I love the denim shirt, so ageless! Thank you for doing these videos.
This all makes so much sense. I was shopping with my daughter years ago during sales time. She told me to "step away from the sale rail. They're not bargains, they're just things nobody else wanted". I hear her voice every time I'm tempted, and it works (mostly anyway).
I don't know about that.. I feel like since covid whenever I go to any shop there is ALWAYS a big sale section not matter what season it's crazy. Just have to keep paying attention to things mentioned in this video about looking out for simple non "statement pieces". And sales section is great for that cause people are exactly drawn to those clothes that have a lot of textures and colors and prints etc. going on. But if you know what you're looking for you might find some hidden gems! One other tip is to look for some high quality things when you go to holidays in a country with much lower salaries. I am currently for summer in macedonia and found an AMAZING designer leather handbag, amazing quality but a designer that is less known. For local prices it's crazy expensive as I payed 100$ (which of course still is money but it's a real bargain considered the quality). I did get some leather shoes and a neat blazer for my bf too for a fraction of the price at home and great quality and it's great for the economy here to spend some money as a tourist.
I've been on a 'mission' to 'improve' my style (and wardrobe). I've been letting go of plastic sandals/shoes, peep toes, too short shorts/skirts, different patterns, bad quality fabric... I've also been avoiding colours which would be different to match... Your comments were very helpful to reinforce why I shouldn't buy this or that. I don't really wish for a 'luxury' style, but an 'elegant' and basic one. Thank you for the video!
Guys. This is the best advice ever. I waatched this video in April when I first started to be more fashion conscious (or at least act on the advice) and I was iffy about it (I love colours and prints and trends lol but my outfits NEVER matched without hours of effort). I followed the advice and omg I literally do not have to agonize over outfits anymore! Plus the clothes look so great, once I finish buying all the basics (I really had to buy everything from scratch lol) I can even insert a few colours here and there. Best decision ever. Rewatching this I'm realizing the value of the advice TT
I've made it my goal to have a luxury minimal forever wardrobe, investing in your pieces is really important! One tip I'd add is "can I gain and or lose a few kilos in this piece or is there no room for fluctuation"
@@Giannas1096 that’s my problems too. I’m in my mid 30’s. One minute I’m a size 12 in jeans/pants and the next I’m a size 8. What I’ve been told (which has been such a weight lifted off my shoulders) is that it is more than normal for a woman’s weight to fluctuate, so luxury minimalist comes in - 1 or 2 pairs of nice jeans or pants in a size 8 and 12. I’ve tried it and it’s been so nice. I feel less stressed knowing I have those different sizes covered.

You are so right! My mother used to say if you. Uh well you buy once. I have several pieces that I have owned for decades. Classic styles. If my house were to be on fire, I would save my cats first and then go back in for a few of those pieces!
I love your tip on avoiding items you are quickly drawn to. I have wasted so much money on beautifully coloured prints that sit unworn in my closet. I feel the best in a clean white t shirt a great blazer and properly fitting jeans...my printed trendy stuff stays at the back of my closet. I will take your advice and resist the next colors that attract me, lol.
This is so true.... at uni I accumulated over 50 pairs of heels in the sales in all different colours, all so high/platform, to go with many many dresses, all of which I probably wore once each. I ended up selling all of it on Vinted and made about £200 total for probably close to £1000 worth of absolute rubbish. Also, I hated clubbing. The things we buy when our mum isn’t there to judge!
I would love to see a styling video on when to crop or not crop trousers/jeans! How do you choose the correct and most flattering length of trouser/jean. I notice you crop your straight leg but often have longer wide leg jeans and id love to know the ‘look behind the look’ for this! Thanks so much ☺️
I totally hear you about the uncomfortable clothes and shoes. Over the years, I have finally stopped buying the high heeled shoes, because they end up sitting in my closet. Now, as tempted as I am to buy the gorgeous shoes (especially the bottega venetta dupes), I hold myself back. In fact, I am so glad I did because, I just found a kitten heeled pair at H&M and have ordered them. Comfort and style have to go hand in hand. Thanks for the video.
I walked into the physical therapist’s and she complimented me on my platform shoes then stated when I got home I should go gather all shoes with heels that high, and get rid of them!
I’m petite and I’m definitely not into the oversized, boxy and cropped trend. Thankfully, there are still beautiful fitted blazers and those never go out of style!
I have neutral coats, trousers and jackets then add colour/patterns with my shirts and tops ..that way I can inject the 'pop' but still look pulled together.
Holy shit. I’ve just recently started doing all of these without realizing it! No color. No patterns. Basics. High quality fabric. Comfortable. I’m 36 years old and wish I watched this video YEARS ago!
Do not buy much during sale... yes! I didn't buy any clothes during 40 days of Lent. Now I kinda lost my temptation on clothes which is good but don't know what to get. What not to buy is so important as what to buy :)
Color - It works if you are thoughtful about what colors you choose to bring in. Limit to a few and make sure they are a similar value so they all work together with your chosen neutrals.
Hi Lydia. I'm from Portugal and I've been following you for about a year. I love your suggestions !!! I would like to ask for a video about the factors that contribute to decide whether or not to wear a belt. And what color do you choose and why. Thanks!
You are so right about colors. When I started to sew my own clothes I only bought the most colorful fabric. That turned my wardrobe into a complete desaster. I now have to sew or buy basics :-D
I absolutely agree with all of the points--particularly too many trend pieces, magpie pieces, and poor quality fabric. I also have very few colorful pieces due to lack of versitility.
I am so heavily guilty on the magpie pieces. I’ve been cleaning out my closet for the past 7 months trying to sell them on poshmark because I’ve worn them once and they’re sitting in my closet!
Hi Lydia, I love your hair and makeup it's so beautiful 😍!!! I love how you described fancy, over the top clothing as Magpie pieces and I had to stop myself from contiue to purchase poor quality fabrics because they never last and they always look super cheap. Awesome class Lydia, thank you as always for sharing my friend ❤️. Take care, stay safe and enjoy the rest of your week 🤗🌈💕.
I’ve never really been a pattern person but have always had the Breton style stripe tops and the odd polka dot item but I’m very much a white shirt, Capri trousers & blazer type person, & your advice has helped me to build on that so thanks 🙏 xxxx
Tips worth repeating!!! I limit patterned clothes not only because they are difficult to match or being worn different ways but also because after 2 or 3 wears I am bored with them! I stick to the classic: stripes, polka dots (I particularly love misshaped dots) I also avoid animal prints (get bored with them quickly too) I still shop at H&M from time to time but look for their best quality fabrics, however I will not buy dress pants or blazers there as I found them of very poor quality and looking cheap!!!.
Thanks for mentioning magpie pieces. I can think of a few I have purchased. Having a name for them will help me avoid them! Excellent content as usual. 👍
Great pointers in this video. I totally agree with all of them especially the uncomfortable pieces. I wish I learned these lessons when I was your age, I could have saved a lot of money. Another thing I love is that your music is in the background and not loud.
Brilliant tips Lydia 😊 I have been trying not to buy those ‘magpie’ pieces that you mentioned. Since lockdown last year the buying has got a little out of control. Now when I see something I like I add it to my favourites and see if I still love it in a day or two. Obviously I run the risk of it selling out but then if i keep checking back to see if it comes back in stock then I know I really like it and it’s not just a magpie buy! xx
Great suggestions, Lydia. When it comes to inserting color, I identify the colors that work for me and never buy any others (I am a fall, so colors like rust, olive green are my go-to ones.
So helpful! I feel like I’m constantly donating so many pieces, and I realize now it’s because I’m buying so many things that are on trend which I can’t get wear out of years later. I am definitely going to route of being a mindful purchaser when it comes to everything, but especially wardrobe! So this was very helpful!
Love your videos like this! I started a capsule wardrobe of basics last year after watching your videos and I find it so much easier to style things now! I always struggled putting outfits together and it was because I had so many pieces that didn’t go together 🙄 xx
Well one thing that helps when gooijng for colored clothes and patterns is to still stick to one scheme. For example I always notice how I end up being drawn to tops with lots of patterns, but most of my pants and skirts already have patterns on them so it won't match. So now I ended up getting some neutral black pants and even some boring beige ones (cause they are comfy and easy to match and were on sale) and have now something I know I can match with a few patterned tops. In the other hand I try to stick to only buying tops with only one color. I also stick to a few specific colors: Pale pink, yellow, wineread and military green. There are some exceptions but I mostly stuck to these colors that go well with my skin and haircolor. If you really declutter and keep the things you really wear you end up knowing what you have so when you go shopping you can ask yourself what you would combine the new piece with. If you can't think of at least 3 tops / bottoms then it's not worth it.
I bought some things last night, kept the gray linen blouse/jacket, but took back the Banana Republic pink sweater and joggers. The piece I kept was the most classic.
Hi. Could you do a video on what colors shoudl be in your wardrobe for most versatility? I realize that depending on your skin tone it may vary but, I believe there are some basic colors to build your wardrobe on. Thank you!!!
Thanks for these tips. Only thing I’d say is that your approach to colours doesn’t quite work for me. Blacks, whites and neutrals tend to wash me out, whereas berry/autumnal columns really suit me. I stick to those colours and they all work together so I’ve never had problems piecing outfits together. With your colouring you look great with mainly white/black/neutral outfits do your approach makes sense but think it varies a lot for others.
I agree- I have some neutrals in my closet to pair with colorful pieces, but most of my closet is made up of reds, greens, browns, and occasional bold color pieces. I think the point is finding a long-term color palette that works for you, which it sounds like you have!
Great video!! I get your point about colours and patterns. I started buying tops and dresses in muted patterns and bright colours in solids only - it has made ALL the difference. Still working on impulse buying magpie pieces lol
I really enjoyed this video! I enjoy all of them but this one was something we all need to hear! I'm inspired and I'm going to go through my wardrobe again and let go of any thing uncomfortable and/or won't go with anything! I love your style...and thanks for linking all of your amazing finds!!
I live in Florida and I have a hard time with dressing well with the heat. Doesn't help when your hot and bloated! I like everything simple and plain with good material but I have a hard time finding things I like :(
This denim shirt is so cool and stylish! I've bought it after seeing it on your Instagram and today it came in. Absolutely 💯 an upgraded basic that looks amazing!
Great tips! I would even add avoid buying things that don't fit quite right. It's okay if it's a hem than can be shortened, but buying something that is way too tight that you think may fit one day is just not worth it. Thanks for the advice!
Hi Lydia i love your vídeos, but this one i don't agree. I love colourfull clothes and patterns and i don't fnd it dificult to dress on. I could never have a wordrope with all rhe same colours. In the rest i do agree with you.
57! Want to mention how I’m gravitating towards cognac colored leather as my neutral basic… reminds me of toasted marshmallows or perfectly cooked Snickerdoodles❤️
Totally agree with everything you said but totally fell in love with the mint jumpsuit with flowers 😍 do you remember where you got it? I‘ve been on the hunt for an elegant well-fitted jumpsuit for quite a while!
I like to buy some quality sweaters in the sale. I don’t think you have to worry too much about color because fall/winter colors repeat year after year.
They’re obvious, but we’re all guilty. I tell my self I live by these rules, but I’ve had times where I’ve spend so much money on things on this list and then I regret it.
This is very dependent on climate and region. I live in AZ, so summer clothes are 3/4 of the year. End of summer sales are amazing for me bc I wear summer clothes until end of December, then again in April. My husband wears sandals year round here. I love the sun.
Lydia, I love your channel. I would really appreciate an entry on how to wear straight cutout jeans, as a trend that's lasting surprisingly long (to me). I find these jeans to pair well with sandals during the summer (open at the back sandals) but very unflattering when worn with sneakers. Thank you and keep up w the good work!
This year I having been buying from & other Stories they have clothes that suit young and (older like me )women and all taste . There knitwear is so good and I have found there trousers fit me perfectly. Bought 20 piece so far and I know I will have them a long time . First time in all my years buying clothes that I am buying quality over quantity.
Thanks Lydia. This was so so helpful. How about a video for 60+ everyday normal woman ideas for what to wear to look your age NOT 30 but still look presentable and your best.
The only “color” I buy, besides the more obvious neutrals, is blue. But the key to a well-coordinated wardrobe is to have a limited color palette whatever colors you choose.
This is such great advice Lydia and I have bought items in the past which I found difficult to pair up with other items in my wardrobe. I used to impulse buy a lot but have learned some valuable lessons from you!! You make so much sense!! 💕💕💕
@@kathygann1180 Try with just a little bit of lipstick Or you do like me always 3 neutrals black, white ,when I don't find the good beige you can switch for kaki, "bleu marine" (sorry I'm french) I hope it hels a little bit 😉😘
The most difficult thing now when shopping is to find natural good quality fabric. Nearly everything is made in the Far East from horrible fabrics. H and M hardly ever had any good quality fabrics, and Mango is even worst. Uniglow is still holding on, but even they started using manmade artificial fabrics. Knitwear is still mainly wool or cotton.
I think 🤔 u need to know how work with all colours and patterns. I wear colour and patterns all the time and I always look good. And my style is very classic and not trend lead.
Even Old Navy has better quality pieces at the beginning of the season. They are not the under $10 sweaters. My son has a jersey from Old Navy that I bought second hand over twelve years ago that still looks and feels great.
There are some crop tops that, when worn over a classic white button down, can inexpensively bring a new vibe to what otherwise can be a sort of boring look with just the white button down. Don't be so quick to put the kabosh on skimpy tops. I'd never wear one by itself, because there aren't warm enough, and I'm too old for that look, but paired on top, or beneath other things, they can really add that extra bit that elevates outfits in the most flattering ways.

Great tips! I would even add avoid buying things that don't fit quite right. It's okay if it's a hem than can be shortened, but buying something that is way too tight that you think may fit one day is just not worth it. Thanks for the advice!
I think this is one of your best videos!! So much wisdom here.
I’ve come across your channel recently and I’ve been binge watching your videos! I think you’re fabulous x
I am 62 and learning and loving these videos
Good advice some may see it as a bit obvious but all points are really true when you think about it properly.
Hair is looking good! 👌🌞
They’re obvious, but we’re all guilty. I tell my self I live by these rules, but I’ve had times where I’ve spend so much money on things on this list and then I regret it.
@@TheDaneyeledee totally agree, I too am guilty 🙋♀️ It's good to reminded
Hi Lydia. You look really pretty with your hair in that style and thanks for another very interesting and useful video. Take care 💖🌷🌸
You have the chicest style! Classic with a little edge! Love love love
This is very dependent on climate and region. I live in AZ, so summer clothes are 3/4 of the year. End of summer sales are amazing for me bc I wear summer clothes until end of December, then again in April. My husband wears sandals year round here. I love the sun.
Thanks for these valuable tips. Zara brings out the magpie in me too. 🤣
I have too much colour and you’re right, not easy to match up. Great tip to keep in mind, thanks 🙏
Your hair looks fabulous!
So current and relatable at 72 yrs. Please share your ideas for petites.
Just found you...Love your top, so glad that you put it in here. You have gorgeous style. Not a thing you were wearing wasn't lovely. More more more!
Thank You sooo much for the new update and new video!!!!!!! So happy when you make new video!!!!!!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️👍❤️👍👍👍👍👍
Great tips as always💕
This year I having been buying from & other Stories they have clothes that suit young and (older like me )women and all taste . There knitwear is so good and I have found there trousers fit me perfectly. Bought 20 piece so far and I know I will have them a long time . First time in all my years buying clothes that I am buying quality over quantity.
And Other Stories has a good returns process too
@@anis6466 Yes just book your return with DPD dont have to leave the house.
I learned a lot from your video now. I used to buy those no-no items, yes it's a waste of money. Thank you!
Key words, stop buying. Time to use what we have for the next 4 seasons. I'm on that mission.
Very good advice that teaches to shop creatively , thank you
Thanks Lydia. This was so so helpful. How about a video for 60+ everyday normal woman ideas for what to wear to look your age NOT 30 but still look presentable and your best.
Middle Age Minx has great videos
So true Lydia. Anyway, nice hair style 😊👍❤️
Very interesting video and I totally agree with the neutrals colors that I can mix to create new outfits 😏😉
Thank you 😘❤🇨🇵
I find it very difficult for me to find a neutral tan-beige t-shirt that looks good with my winter coloring. Any suggestions?
@@kathygann1180 Try with just a little bit of lipstick
Or you do like me always 3 neutrals black, white ,when I don't find the good beige you can switch for kaki, "bleu marine" (sorry I'm french)
I hope it hels a little bit 😉😘
@@-MEL16-A.O.C thank you, but I’m 71 and if I’m not swimming, I wearing lipstick!
@@kathygann1180 I'm 44 and I wear lipstick too🤣
Bises de France 😘
The most difficult thing now when shopping is to find natural good quality fabric. Nearly everything is made in the Far East from horrible fabrics.
H and M hardly ever had any good quality fabrics, and Mango is even worst.
Uniglow is still holding on, but even they started using manmade artificial fabrics. Knitwear is still mainly wool or cotton.
I shop second hand for designers I would never be able to afford. I shop by touch for fabrics that I love.
Miss Lydia, you are spot on with this video!
I think 🤔 u need to know how work with all colours and patterns. I wear colour and patterns all the time and I always look good. And my style is very classic and not trend lead.
I like your makeup here! Can you share the lipstick, foundation, etc. you have on?
Really great tips! I love color but agree too much of it hinders its versatility within your wardrobe.
Even Old Navy has better quality pieces at the beginning of the season. They are not the under $10 sweaters. My son has a jersey from Old Navy that I bought second hand over twelve years ago that still looks and feels great.
So true Lydia 🙏🏽, Never really thought about it before
Great Video! Timeless highly quality clothing is earth friendly and worth the investment in the long run. Crap clothing ends up polluting the earth.
Love your videos , great tips 🤗 what nail polish are you wearing ? It's a lovely colour .
Great tips Lydia...and so true!! Hope you are both keeping safe and well x x 🥰
The impractical patterns made you looks so much younger, anyway, I love some of your tips
You wear that top really well! The model on the website doesn't rock it at all.
I am approaching 70 and my rule is that if Audrey Hepburn wouldn’t wear it, I won’t!
Good philosophy. AH was class personified.
You look a lot like Kate Hudson! Good video! 💕
Can you please add a link to the shirt you are wearing? I absolutely love it!
