in the last few years it felt less and less good for me to pair black with colour. I prefer to match black with black or white now and colour with brighter colors. So I was glad to hear that

Lydia, your lessons are the best for me: there're loads of beautiful outfit ideas online, but very few people actually explain why it works. And you do it in a very clear and coherent way, as a scholar I also appreciate the structure and the logic of your videos. Keep going!

Not toning down a color with black was a real eye opener! All the other tips are also great and put into words what I already sensed but couldn't pin down myself. Thank you so much!

This Spring I pulled out a mustard yellow coat that I'd always wore in the Fall. It felt new in Spring pairing it with the same color tee, light beige trousers and the Isabel Marant tan belt.
Thank you, Lydia for all your lessons and inspiration. So many of us think you are a God Send. For over 20 years I shopped at a U.S. retailer that's been around since the 1940's called Talbots. Even though they promoted classic styles, I found that season after season.... year after year I ended up with a closet full of items that I'd only wear a few times.... then bought more clothes. I've been ready for a change and a major edit in my wardrobe for some time. Discovering and following you has been wonderful and liberating. I was one of those matchy-matchy try hard dressers. You are helping me to see the light of change, buying less and learning how to maximize what I have, adding few carefully chosen pieces!
If you could see my closet...you'd say OMG...she really need my help!! I needed a major EDIT.

I love the look of mixing different whites! I also love videos showing how small styling hacks are what make the outfit. I sometimes think-I have those same pieces, but they look boring, unflattering or even frumpy on me. Seeing how tucking, turning up sleeves, sock styles or even where clothing hits, like at ankle, waist, collar line... it's all is what really makes you look chic and effortless. Those lessons really help!

Really loving these lesson type of videos. The breaking down of all the details you teach for how to create an outfit that is current and creative really makes a difference. Could you please do a video series on dressing different body types, especially for people who are combination of body types. For example I'm pear shaped, but with apple belly area, and extra broad chest, thick limbs, and I'm 5"2 generally size 14 so plus size. Honestly I can't tell you how many times going shopping has me cry inside and feel like nothing I like looks good on me. Would love to see your take on how to dress for my body, especially wide jeans/trousers, blazers, etc, while looking well balanced. Love your contrast style sensibility.

You have a really lovely, non-patronising and encouraging way to present your "lessons", Lydia! I don't mind you using the term "rules", because you always do it with a twinkle in your eye and with empathy. Oh, and thanks for making me pause before putting away my beiges, just because I'm now getting the pink pieces out! Might go together after all...? I'll give it a try.

Thank you so much Lydia. Again, these are fashion ideas that I would never have thought of. The sandals with leather is a wonderful way to wear and mix my clothing up a little. The black trousers and coloured top, again I think are sort of wasted on each other. They can both be showed off so much better using them separately. I confess that I have never mixed metals but the subtle change on the belt made so much difference. Than you again.

These kinds of videos are my favorite - thank you for asking what we’d like to see!
1)how do you organize your clothes? That would be super helpful - I’ve got loads I love.
    2) What about alterations? Do you have a person - could you take us along for a pin up or fitting? Analyze how much to leave and lose and why? That is key isn’t it? Would love to see!
    3) how did you find your tailor or find a good one to work with - I’m super intimidated about it - Out in the suburbs in the States it seems limited to fast alterations in the dry cleaners - it’s rushed and they are crabby! What do we look for to find a tailor?
    4) It’s been lots of years with cropped pants and ankle boots - now seems things are trending long - you’ve done great content for pant leg shape \ length and boot / style - can you do more? I’ve got loads of ankle boots I’d like to wear differently for an update but didn’t buy them for long pants!
You are going to be at 1M soon - no one is doing what you do! Thanks for all the hard work and content! It’s had such an impact on me!

You're soooo articulate, and describe everything perfectly, even when you were adding a disclaimer with each rule.
I really loved these tips and your cutaways are always so helpful! I have so much black in my wardrobe, so it's scary to try and pair color with something other than black. Definitely going to look for more tonal trousers :)
It would be cool to see the 'before' and 'after' maybe side by side too, so we can compare the difference and really get an idea of how those simple changes can change your whole look!
Not sure if this is just on my phone, but the text on IG covers your shoes in videos and there's no way to enlarge the video or hide the username, for example, so it's hard to see your whole look.

I really like these kinds of videos were your audience learn a lot. I also like the way you teach style without being condescending. It doesn't have to be all luxury brands. You can inject one or two luxury items but still wear with simple inexpensive clothes.
For this video, I'm breaking the rule of not wearing leather for summer. I have 3 leather pants. One black, one camel and one gray. I will definitely start wearing them. I'm from BC Canada and it doesn't really get that warm here.
Thank you for all your tips.

I am also grateful that your investment pieces are not bank breaking but high quality items that does the job and lasts. Thank you Lydia. You are just wonderful. I am in my 50s and you are introducing me to new ideas. I love neutral colors and you have shown me how to add a little color that adds interest to my outfit but not overwhelming. I am learning a great deal from your videos as I update my entire wardrobe. Although I have to do it on the cheap (think SHEIN) it provides direction as to where to invest and where to cheat a bit on the budget.
Hints like monochrome colors do not need to be a perfect match of colors but rather the same family in different textures, And the fact that you can mix gold and silver jewelry/accessories is freeing and increases opportunities for looks.
I really enjoy your tone and presentation. It is helpful with a warm and encouraging attitude.
By the way, your 11 Staples video from last month was especially helpful!

Everyone always says black goes with everything. I don't agree and I completely agree that black tends to swallow any surrounding colour and suck the juice out of it. Black is actually a very challenging 'colour' to wear it, and it doesn't flatter everyone's skin tone (like mine, for instance).

I’d like to see more videos on how to find trousers/blazers that don’t look cheap (materials used/blends), fit well and preferably don’t need to be dry cleaned if possible. I frequently visit a tailor for dresses, have you needed to go to tailor for pants? I find the non skinny jeans and pants I try on to be gapping in the waist but tight in buttock. Skinny jeans were so easy never needed to be hemmed and fitted in waist and if too tight muffin top and I sized up. These other cuts are difficult.
Also, like to see more videos on skirts to add to classic wardrobe and more skirt outfits.

Perfection as usual ❤👌🏻 Mixing metals has always been my go to 😎 Stacking and layering accessories are my signature ..
I am guilty for opting for adding black to a lot of looks especially at work.
Sometimes I break that with unexpected colour blocking "P.S. I love wearing colours and prints", but in a lot of instances I go for the easy way and wear different silhouettes of black pants with the same bag for the week and only play up with the rest of the outfit and accessories!

As one of your older subscribers, I love your tips. As we age, it is easy to get stuck in the styling rules of the past. We try to look younger by taking care of ourselves, then we throw on a dated look, and boom!, we undo it all. The black pants, colorful top, so dated. Actually, just the black pants is such an older woman staple, unless paired with an edgy white shirt perhaps.

You are soooo good with proportions - it is your superpower! Can you do content about proportions for things like oversized winter coat length? How long is too long? Are there ratios any height can consider? Some people get the length just right -the hem lands on the slim part of the ankle so it looks luxuriously slouchy but in scale! How do shorter people ( any people ) scale to be oversized but not too big?
Also with blazers? What do we look at for our size / proportions? Get out the white board and pens, lol! Thank you so much!

Personally, I like the 'teacher' style video / vlogs like this one; great for people like me who need all the help they can get when it comes to fashion. As far as suggestions for future vlogs go - and I don't know if this is your thing - but I have some vintage pieces that used to belong to my mother - mostly 50s, 60s, 70s - and I am really quite unsure how to wear some of them 'in the modern world.' How do you mix them with modern pieces, if that is possible, or is it better to keep the entire outfit vintage? Perhaps vintage isn't your thing, but thought I would ask, anyway.

Hi Lydia! I love your lessons especially around proportions, after so many years I can finally articulate why things look off! I do think ( this is just my opinion, others may disagree) that you could condense what you say in this video, I find myself loosing track what you are trying to say and skipping to the important bits. I would love more outfit examples per rule as well because they are just so helpful to watch xxxx

Lydia, I just found you about a month ago, and am absolutely hooked! You have taught me so much! I am so excited to learn these things! I have always loved art and design, but have never really thought about why things work with fashion… I can put things together pretty well, but now the “light bulb” has come on! I am really having fun with it!
I have a lot of good basic pieces… until I started watching you videos I didn’t realize that the oversized blazers were now so popular! I have several more fitted ones, how would I style them to make them more modern?
    Thank you!

Love your lessons and I've recently tried mixing metals and it looks so much better! Could you do a lesson on wearing dresses so they don't look 'try hard' but could be worn casual or for a special occasion.

Love it! I mix metals usually, but for me it was a discovering the (new) rule of mixing different shades of white. Thanks Lydia 😊
