Excited to watch your videos! I have POTS which alone is literally bending, reaching, or scrubbing causes a flare. Super fun.... but yes, you sometimes gotta flare to declutter and ultimately feel happier. :) I even declutterd one handed while recovering from endless wrist surgeries. It's a fantastic form of therapy!
I'm a professional house cleaner and through my job I've witnessed how different everyone's expectations of "clean" are. I think it's important to take away the judgement and morality around cleanliness, thanks for talking about perfectionism and how it can hold people back. This conversation is so important to help people do their best in caring for their homes instead of trying to be perfect and feeling like a failure.
😂😂😂 that is true, my idea of clean is different to my husband's. We joke and say that it's Ana clean😂😂😂. I get in the little cracks, I scrub, I dust, the dishes are gleaming. My mom's family is crazy about cleaning 😂 my husband's family is on the opposite side of the spectrum 😂. He has gotten much better over the many years we have been together 😊 there is hope, but it's a long way away 😂
The Fly Lady zone cleaning has helped me 😊. Rather than trying to clean my entire house in a day, it was less overwhelming to break up my cleaning into zones. Also to never leave a room empty-handed.
Wonderful podcast. Dawn, I love the way you REALLY listen to your guest!! So many are so busy thinking about their next question, they never listen. You are great!!
Last night, I was talking to some people, and one of them introduced us to "spoon theory." A "spoon" is a unit of energy, and we don't all start the day with the same number of spoons. This ties into your guest's situation. Loved this! Thank you!
Fellow spoonie. I was born with spina bifida which didn’t cause any energy issues. But I found out in my 40’s that I also have Chiari 2. That causes many energy issues.
I can sooo relate to her list of very basic things have been doing this the last 6 weeks since I had my second child. On that list is shower, make dinner, dishes, laundry. It has worked so well. I have my list of basics and then I add things as I see them and if I have the time, energy, and capacity I do more. This is the secret every mom needs!
I am 73 years old. Prior to a month ago, I had a great schedule for cleaning my home, and I was able to do almost everything. Then I had a mild stroke. That has changed everything. Many days, my energy level is 0-3 out of 10. I have modified my life, and it is not always pleasant.
I was so glad a lovely nurse said to me after my first newborn no one needs a steril house, everything did not need to be done each week, things can be done later.
Hi Dawn. This was an awesome podcast. My health issues have changed who I am. My past self was a very OCD clean organized person - right from childhood I loved to clean and organize. My life has changed so much and I've been trying to get back that super organized person I once was. But guess what , - listening to tour podcast today with your guest - I've realized that that person I once was is long gone. So I have to work with my energy level and health that I have right now in my life just to achieve what is possible and not beat myself up for what isn't possible anymore. Your podcast with Sarah today has really opened my eyes and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Thank you and thank you to your guest.
I'm only 11 minutes in but WOOHOO for people who get it!!! You just mentioned using up all your energy on a good day and paying dearly for it for the next week. *So. Relatable.* I also have auto immune diseases and that's my terrible cycle. Can't wait to watch the rest of this and go follow you all over the internet:)
I love this! And I feel what she has felt... overwhelm, guilt, locked inside my own head, and OCD perfection (made better by prescription medication). Eight years ago, my life (as I knew it) came to a crashing halt when I contracted a mystery illness. Suddenly, walking was too much, I had only enough energy to go to the bathroom, and sit on the couch. Getting a shower used more energy than I had. Thankfully I have a lot of family support, because I never went hungry, and a year later my mom drove me to Atlanta, where I was diagnosed with severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (formerly Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). Eight years later, I'm still severely affected. There is no cure. Some days, just thinking about cleaning is enough to use all the spoons, and I'm too fatigued to get up. I do have a few good days when I can organize while sitting down. So I can occasionally be useful. I'll have to check out Adaptive Cleaning, and see if I can get on board.
My LEAST favorite chore is making our king-size bed because it hurts my back. Turning this on, I was lying in the puddle of clean sheets, dreading it. But this gave me the gumption to get that done, which led to dusting, swiffering, and vacuuming the whole room! It's fresh and clean. Now I'll stop. Thanks, ladies.
That’s exactly how I am… I may be too tired to clean the kitchen at night, so I’ll listen to Dawn while throwing dishes in the dishwasher…. Then it turns into just CLEANING THE KITCHEN. Dawn puts that SPARK in us 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I am so blessed to have found these type of habits at a young age. Thanks to my routines I never spend more than 30 minutes a day cleaning. When my kids were young we had friends who never could understand how I kept everything together. No matter how I explained that just a little bit of basics every day equated the whole overtime, they didn't process it. I will always be thankful that I was able to have time for family and be able to stay on top.of the housework. You miss so much by stressing over what your not getting done, and stressing over who may see your mess.
You are very lucky! I wish I had understood the value of 1)decluttering as you go along, 2) getting everyone to pick up after themselves -it seemed easier to do it myself but it was a bad example, and 3) doing the dishes and a quick pick up of stray items daily. These few changes made a massive difference and allow me to get to other "projects"I do not get to every day without having the house become unworkable.Another quick thing I added was to quickly pull the covers up on the beds, as it makes such a calmer look in the bedrooms.
For sure this works if you don't have too much stuff. Too bad I didn't start decluttering before having kids! Now I am always overwhelmed and struggling with managing my time and energy. 🙈🙈
@@Maiju86 it's a slippery slope... You go from thinking you just need to organize to realizing you need Peter Walsh. If your kids are still young, don't wait! I have never really “liked” having to clean…love a clean home, but not maintaining it. Over the past 4 years, having TH-cam videos you have & others you have suggested (Clutterbug, FrugalFit Mom, The Wads) on while I do dishes, clean, etc. has made me so much more productive & make house cleaning somewhat enjoyable. We also are empty nesters so that’s made it a little easier on cleaning when needed….thank again for the time & info you provide for all of us 💕💕
Wow, wow, wow... the state and ability to keeping the house really has deeper implications than we have ever understood until now. This was such a core dive video, especially with those on the outskirts of high energy, and those who have had organizing skills. Those with low energy, health issues, mental health issues... You too, can navigate through this! You can overcome the paralysis of it-has-to-be-done-like-this. You have permission for your home NOT to look a certain way!! ♡ Freeing and empowering video!
Thank you for sharing this video! I have worked nights as a CNA and now as a nurse for 20 years. Trying to manage everything we as mom need to is freaking hard! I also have ADHD and some recent physical limitations. I do what I can and let go of what I can’t. I’ve found what works for me is making a list based on the time of day or night (depending on if I’m working or I’m off). So on the days I work, I will put on the list the time I get home to take my boys to school, then the time I’m sleeping, when I wake up to shower, the time I make dinner and what I’m making. It has changed my life my attitude my mood (my emotions are my biggest issue with my ADHD). Love to all you out there on the struggle bus! We hear you we see you! We got this!
Dawn, thank you so much, both for spotlighting a smaller creater, AND for highlighting the challenges of chronic illness for a larger audience. So happy to see Sarah here! She was recommended by another viewer and her perspective has been so immensely helpful to me.
I have been implementing the" 5 minutes matter" principle and I love it. Sometimes that is all the time I have and other times it gets me on a roll where I keep going. It doesn't seem burdensome and so I know I can do it and get something accomplished. Thank you, I enjoy your channel so much and you!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!❤ I too have an Auto immune Disease with lots of fatique. So glad to hear others struggle with energy. I take B12, Magnesium, Provigal, and Prescription Vitamin D. I still get fatiqued. Thank you again! ❤❤
I too had that epiphany that, ya know, maybe I'm quite capable of deciding how clean I need my house to be and it doesn't include baseboard cleaning every month or whatever. Zones made me zone out. Replaced that concept with a loop list and finally feel like I have a cleaning system that works for me.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Sarah, I feel the exact same way! I have multiple autoimmune diseases as well and I consistently get down on myself for not doing "enough" on the weekends and evenings. I get too overwhelmed and I just go take a nap instead of doing anything, because I am always tired. This discussion has really opened my eyes and helped me understand that it truly is okay just to get the dishwasher unloaded and reloaded, to feed the dogs, to make a meal, etc if that is all the energy I have at the end of the week.
This is so so good!! I have ADHD and tend to go full speed and then get burnt out for several days. I’m excited to implement some low capacity routines and hopefully avoid the burnout cycle. Dawn, your content never disappoints ❤😊
I loved this ! Thanks to you both. My Mom is a perfectionist and her home feels sterile and hotel like. Thats how she manages her anxiety. I love my home but always felt a little guilty for not going to Mom’s level of deep sterility. I feel free now. I’m a big fan of 5 minutes matter, might as well do it now, and cleaning as I go. The whole thing works better with low inventory. I also love the idea of : survival mode, healing, normal, and growth modes of energy and expectations. Different things for different seasons. Thanks to you both !
I've just started watching. It's really true. I always imagine what if the home was completely clean and I could start over and tell myself that I would keep it clean.😂😂😂 But in reality it's not easy to set up habits.
30-60 minutes into a clean house and one of the family members makes a mess 🙄 tbh my motivation to clean flew away years ago. The results are so fleeting they are almost not worth the effort. To maintain the cleanliness I'd have to kick out everyone first 😂
This was a really interesting podcast and I was doing some thinking and realised that while my mother has always had these things under control and is a natural cleaner and natural declutter-er, she didn't understand that I couldn't "just do it." She didn't know how to break down all of her steps and the way she was thinking in order to explain it to me. I remember her saying "go clean your room" and I would ask "how?" And she just thought I was being facetious! 😂 She'd exasperatedly reply, "just put everything in its place" - but I didn't understand her at all - and I was very overwhelmed by the whole project. Was there a labeled cubby somewhere for each item? No. I was genuinely confused. So every time I watch videos and tutorials, I'm always having all these epiphanies and I keep realising, "ooooh that's what my mom has always done!" Duh. So my main point is, the way you grew up doesn't necessarily inform how *you* are going to be. My mother set an excellent example, but she didn't instruct me in a way that happened to work with my brain. ❤️
Something happened on my brain last april and i start routines i become minimalist and i’ve changed. I don’t know how and why but i did it some how❤ i can’t explain
Oh my goodness. Thank you for helping me understand my daughter!!!!!!! I'm gonna share this episode with her. As a mom I have felt like a failure because she didn't get my 'clean gene' Hopefully this helps her get started.
@@Ford98270I agree. I didn't get my mom's clean gene either and I'm so glad bc she's very close to OCD about her house. I'm fine with her being this way but I have zero desire to be that way about my own home. Mine is clean enough.
This was just what I was looking for. I've been searching and searching for videos about lowering my standards of cleanliness (I live on a farm in the dusty desert with kids and many pets- a perfect white spotless home is not possible for me right now), or just pep talks about letting the how be imperfect, and there are so few videos about this. Thank you!
I do love the idea of seasons of life and reverse planning routines. In this season I have a newborn and toddler, life is very busy. I have limited time to cook and clean. I cannot meal prep several elaborate snacks or meals. Same with cleaning. I’m not gonna do my basic daily things and do big tasks right now. Some days I feel lit up, but it’s relatively rare. Maybe once or twice a week. Maybe I plan one busy day and several low key but consistent days.
This was very, very encouraging. I try to use my energy when I have it and then lower my expectations of myself when I'm tired. Sarah, great to see that you are living life in spite of your health. I definitely declutter just a little at a time because I don't want to spend loads of time doing it. I have a lot of life to live instead of doing that, so I squeeze in 10 minutes to an hour when I can.
I so appreciate this info. As someone who has lived with chronic pain for around 30 years, I’m always looking for ideas to help me with my home. Lots of good info and I will definitely be looking for info from her.
This was very helpful! We sound very alike. I appreciate that you don't stage your house when making a video. I find that I lose interest in TH-camrs that always seem perfectly perfect! I subconsciously find it discouraging. I guess I would be distracted by the background if it looked like hoarder level, but just messy is not distracting to me and helps me normalize that my house doesn't always have to be tidy to be acceptable 🙂
Brilliant podcast Dawn. I found it so relatable. Living with chronic pain and not know how or where to start. Fighting the perfectionism, all or nothing thinking and overwhelm results in never actually starting. Can't wait to check out Sarah McGlory's content. Realistic examples of how to keep a home and what it looks like is seriously lacking. Thanks for sharing.
I was just watching a video on the importance of pacing to manage ME/CF. This capacity levels routines idea totally works with that. Thank you so much!
If you clean a little bit every day, you never have to have a dirty house. It is a mindset and it is about developing routines and habits. Once you do that, you are cleaning without even realizing it. Then, 1 day, you look around and think how did my house get so clean? And you realize it's because I had habits and routines and it had become a mindset❤ You don't have to have a desire to tackle a dirty house because your house is never dirty anymore. It doesn't have to be spotlessly clean , but it just doesn't collect dirt when you do a little bit every day without thinking about it. Also, becoming minimal and having minimal things in the house makes it SO easy to tidy up and clean and it's so quick! It took me into my forties to realize this..to embrace minimalism AND daily routines and the daily habits and the mindset. When I put the kettle on in the morning for tea, I unload the dishwasher. When I wake up in the morning, I do a quick swipe of any dust on the dresser & nightstand as I make the bed...and so on.... I love being free of spending all saturday cleaning!
🤗 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 🤗 to both of you!!! I needed to hear this. I will probably listen to this again and again when I get frustrated with myself. So encouraging to me. Thank you 😊
29:31 when she said all or nothing ugh me and my therapist go over my behavior is directly related to my all or nothing thinking and just hearing her say you have to stop without finishing is killing me
The only thing I do consistently every day is the dishes in the sink, I hate going to bed with dirty dishes. Only two in my household so I run the dishwasher once a week, and only three loads of laundry a week. The rest of the cleaning gets done when I feel like it, dusting, vacuuming etc.
I keep a short list of daily tasks and my BARE MINIMUM is: DISHES. And I make that less unpleasant by putting on an apron and gloves and having somehting to listen to while working.
I have become obsessed over my house, and I hate it. I can't be home now and just enjoy it. I work full time, and Saturday's time is very limited because I have to visit family because this is really the only day I have. Sunday is church day, and I also clean the office I work at on Sundays. I have cats and a large dog. I just can't keep up and it's starting to affect my health. I'm up until midnight or after cleaning every night. I don't have enough time.
Okay. Gee…maybe I do have ADHD. I keep thinking this. 😂 yes, perfectionism and distractibility! I love these tips! I do tend to get hyper-focused on the house. And I’m great at it for awhile till my mind needs to shift to…prepping for the homeschool year…preparing for Bible study…exercise and health. I’m like, I can only do one thing well at a time!
I just started dusting for the first time to see if it helps. I don’t like having dust go in the air but wiping things down all the time is cumbersome.
O am listening right mow, and other than having children (I have lots of fur kids), you guest really resognates with me. Itcl took me a few years to finally "get" Flylady's system before I tried it. I cannot not do all the things on her lists, but I use the structure of her system to create my own faily, zone cleaning and zdsly Focus lists. And I edit them ad needed. My home I'd far from where I'd like it to be. Bit I have my routines yo help me maintain a minimum level of tidyness as well as maje tiny bites of progress each week. I like your guest's idea of her bear minimum expectations each day. I have my range from bear minimum to my ideal self kevel of dailies, and usually I accomplish somewhere between the 2 extremes. I've become ok with that, because it alias me the time and energy to leave room fair things like fiid prep, crafts and hobbies and hangout time with the fur kids and my hubby. I has slyo shift my mindset on my dsily routines from ckwani g being my msin ficus to self-care being my msin focus. So, during my morning; afternoon and evening routines, I alternate throughout the day between self-care; orhers-care and house-care tasks, doing very short sessions of housework tasks in various categories in between all the other things. And during each short session; I start with yge most urgent task at the moment, TGEN focus on the itger maintainable ckeaning and housekeeping tasks. At yhe end of the, fay, I will have done my main 4 cleaning tasks (dishes, laundry; general tidy and pet messes). De-cluttering tends to be done during short sessions. Wgen I see something that nedds to be de-cluttered while I'm cleaning, I allow 5 minutes r kess to deal with it tgen. Once a week, I do a 15 minute de-clutter in whatever zone I'm in, no matter what level of mess or maintenance that zone is in. I still allow people into my house, mess and all. My bathrooms are clean enough fir guests, I have one e tra rolm ready for a guest to dtay on, my living rolm sofa is alsys cleared off to hangout tgere, and my kitchen is maintained enough to cook in, use the table for other projects, and to ear a meal there. Even in all this chaos, I can still function in my home, and it's very slowly coming back together. You guest majes me feel sooooooo validated on approaching my home.
Teacher here. Mom life too. Some weeks laundry, dinner and dishes is all I achieve. My weekend projects and summer projects sound like your mid and high capacity lists.
It is completely going to depend on each person! I heard her say that and I knew someone wouldn't understand that! I'm a cleaning lady and yes I clean for hours a day for others. But I don't spend that much time on my own house. Going to depend on the person and their level of cleanliness.
Absolutely not, not even when you have kids if those kids have sports just nope even if you are a stay home mom even as a stay at home I do not want to spend my whole day cleaning, some cleaning yes, but also time talking to my husband, studying my Bible, figuring out dinner
I don't have kids and I spend more than 30 min a day, it is literally going to depend on each person! Please do not tell someone it's not normal bc you don't know their circumstances.
@@dianasimplifies if that isn’t the norm good for you, but also don’t judge those of us that choose not to because we would rather be spending time with our kids

This is the podcast channel not the regular channel and this has been the announcer almost the whole time she's done this podcast. It may be that you wandered across this the first time today. ❤
Dawn's cleaning solution is to throw everything away including throwing away her kids stuff. They can't have anything but the bare minimum. But Dawn can have lots of throw pillows, false eye lashes and gross cans of cake frosting.
Why do you keep watching her videos if they bring up resentment and anger in you? Life can be better if you don’t keep content creators you disagree with in your life.

I don't think I've ever heard the phrase "loop list" before. Would you mind telling us about it?
Thank you! Thank you!
To maintain the cleanliness I'd have to kick out everyone first 😂
@cb9825 100% the same until a year after my last child left home. Only recently have I started to like my home again. Hang in there it gets better.❤
Dawn, I love the podcast . Being able to continue learning from you and your guests when I’m driving is so wonderful.
Dawn, this is such an awesome interview. Thanks so much for sharing realistic approaches to handling life.
Something happened on my brain last april and i start routines i become minimalist and i’ve changed. I don’t know how and why but i did it some how❤ i can’t explain
Yay!
Oh my goodness. Thank you for helping me understand my daughter!!!!!!!
I'm gonna share this episode with her. As a mom I have felt like a failure because she didn't get my 'clean gene'
Hopefully this helps her get started.
Please be cautious crossing the line of shame.
Really good content today! I also have ADHD and loss of mobility. This is just what I needed to hear to confirm I'm doing okay. Thank you!
I really needed to hear this! Thank you!!
This podcast was so full of inspiration and hope and encouragement. Thank you both! 😊
When I wake up in the morning, I
do a quick swipe of any dust on the dresser & nightstand as I make the bed...and so on.... I love being free of spending all saturday cleaning!
Love this. Very good approach. And nice to feel the connection between the two of you.
Excellent podcast! Thank you both so much!
🤗 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 🤗 to both of you!!! I needed to hear this. I will probably listen to this again and again when I get frustrated with myself. So encouraging to me. Thank you 😊
29:31 when she said all or nothing ugh me and my therapist go over my behavior is directly related to my all or nothing thinking and just hearing her say you have to stop without finishing is killing me
I love that about restoring your confidence, so true ❤
Dawn, great podcast. Your makeup looks amazing.
I have autoimmune stuff too. I pick room at a time. Sometimes even the basics are hard
Great Podcast! I appreciate the honesty!
So close to being the first one to comment. I just had to write❤️. Thank you for giving us inspiration so consistently. Love your input!!!
Thank you both so much!! Very helpful❤
Wow! This was so powerful!
My low-capacity list would be:
Do dishes, wipe kitchen counter and rinse sink
Wipe bathroom sink with hands
Tidy
Vacuum crumbs
11:11 oh my gah !!! This is me --explains so much!
I love this because I have fibro. She gave some great suggestions.
I liked the idea of not putting so much pressure on future me
five minutes matters .... and my new one ..... may as well do it ....
I sit and say over and over, get up.
❤So helpful Girlfriend's ❤
Teacher here. Mom life too. Some weeks laundry, dinner and dishes is all I achieve. My weekend projects and summer projects sound like your mid and high capacity lists.
❤❤❤
You forgot to throw away the Michigan bottle🤣 Ohio State fan and live in Ohio lol
I’m sorry is 3 hours of daily cleaning not the norm!?!?
It is completely going to depend on each person! I heard her say that and I knew someone wouldn't understand that! I'm a cleaning lady and yes I clean for hours a day for others. But I don't spend that much time on my own house. Going to depend on the person and their level of cleanliness.
30 mins is probably good enough.
Extremely helpful and elightening, but why the male commercially inro voice to the podcasts? I ould prefer to her Dawn herself. The recirded voice sounds fake
Dawn, what's with the weird intro with man's voice? Honestly I'm a bit turned off... I would much rather hear your voice!
This is the podcast channel not the regular channel and this has been the announcer almost the whole time she's done this podcast. It may be that you wandered across this the first time today. ❤
It’s just how it is, it’s a very friendly announcer if it’s bothers you go past it
Dawn's cleaning solution is to throw everything away including throwing away her kids stuff. They can't have anything but the bare minimum. But Dawn can have lots of throw pillows, false eye lashes and gross cans of cake frosting.
Why do you keep watching her videos if they bring up resentment and anger in you? Life can be better if you don’t keep content creators you disagree with in your life.
The less you have, the less you have to pick up.
Also, paying for help is a great way to help yourself and help others
fixmyproperty AI fixes this. eaning approach, not house problem.
