Don’t say that!! I thought the same but then was able to meet her in MD and it was sooooooooo COOL!! She probably thought I was a little cray cray, I could barely tell her my name when I met her because I was crying. She has helped me so

Just found your channel Dawn a few months ago in a time when I was feeling overwhelmed. I watched "Your stuff is making you sick" and I just sat there in awe and cried. At that moment, I felt like you were speaking directly to me.. and i realized all of my anxiety over the last year was stemming from and excess of STUFF. I was tired of managing it all, and when you said that every item is telling you something (clean this, put that up, paint this, build that) I looked around my house with new eyes and thought "We have WAY too much and I'm simply DONE with managing it all!" There's 2 of us (weren't able to have children but we have a niece and nephew that come stay with us often) and we have 3 FULL sets of dishes, we have decor that I've never liked, we have triplicates of tons random things like emergency car blankets (not in the car btw but in our laundry room 🙄🤣). And this truly is the first time I'm making the connection between my anxiety/depression and the sheer volume of THINGS we have! Thank you Dawn for your amazing content 🧡 I am genuinely blessed to have come across your channel!

Also, in one of your videos some months ago you mentioned without any detail how you explained to your family that not helping with cleaning chores they would be charged a cleaner’s fee if you had to it for them. I’d love to hear more about this. It’s a clever way to illustrate the value of your time and that everyone has responsibilities around the house.

    • @TheMinimalMom
      @TheMinimalMom ปีที่แล้ว +17

That’s right! Ironically I haven’t had to enforce it since, but yes, one of our kids had left for an activity (my mom was taking them so I didn’t know that they hadn’t completed their chores) and so we made the rule that if this happened again that I would charge them $25/hour to do it for them (with a minimum of a one hour charge even if it only takes 10 minutes) and we haven’t had the issue since. Usually they know if Tom or I are home that they don’t get to leave unless their stuff is done, but this is still a helpful tactic to establish value for everyone’s time like you said!

Seriously, to say that you have changed my life, is an understatement! The video you did of cleaning the front hall closet and "take it there now" method, was the kick-start to me decluttering. Because of you, I was able to go into labor a week early, and not worry that the house is a mess when the dog-sitter came (I also work full time, so I didn't have a lead-time before going to the hospital). I always thought I just wasn't good at organizing, and that everyone else's house was clutter free and this was a ME problem. It's always refreshing to hear that I'm not the only one!!!!

It has been over a year since I began listening you you Dawn, and though it certainly hasn't been easy, I can finally say that I am making a dent in the massive amount of excess I have acquired! I think one of the hardest parts is thinking about how much something cost, but I have gradually been able to say, "If it doesn't fit, have a current use, or fit in with my lifestyle, then why am I keeping it?" This past weekend we tackled the garage (where I have overflowed many totes of holiday decorations, dishes, excess cleaning supplies, etc.) and I came face to face with my Bissell Rug Shampooer! It was an expensive model, comparable to the type you rent, but in the past year we had taken up all of our wall to wall carpeting and replaced it with vinyl flooring. I simply didn't have any use for it anymore. My husband suggested I put it on Marketplace, but before I knew it, I was rolling it out to the curb and there it was, with a FREE sign on it! He was surprised! Later that evening, a car stopped and a young couple got out and seemed very excited to get a close look. They loaded it into their car and then when they saw the note on the sign that said, "Please leave the FREE sign for me.", the woman hopped back out with the sign and tucked it under a rock by my flag pole! I was so pleased that someone could make use of it! You know what, that one outcome made it easier to bypass the selling choice and just put things out front to give away! Today it was raining, but I took my determination inside and tackled the linen closet! My goodness, 9 sets of sheets for our bed! I donated 6 of them plus a bunch of extra pillow cases and twin sheets (we don't even have any twin beds anymore)! Next I tackled the coat closet. My husband has over 20!!! I turned them all backwards on the hangers and told him to put them away properly each time he wore one! Dawn, I am on a roll! Yes, I have so much yet to do, but I feel as though I am finally on the right track. I can't thank you enough!!!

You've really helped me for years Dawn, so grateful you're here. I've been decluttering for a few years now, but its not until this past fortnight when we moved furniture out of our lounge to put new carpet down that I realised (and my family) that we love just having space!

And I remember thinking “oh I hope she keeps these videos coming!” I honestly bragged about you to my husband that night because I was so excited about what I had learned and I felt like if a fellow Midwestern mom of young kids is saying it works for her I believe her when she says it can work for me. You’re down to earth, not Pinterest perfect everything, was so refreshing to see I waited so anxiously for your next videos! So many are so grateful for your content. I watch, listen and realize I was going through it all along side of you and probably a little before you. I listen to you and I remember those exact feelings of overwhelm and wondering why can't I keep it all together. I started decluttering and it was tough at first because I remember my husband saying to me "I think you buy things just to get rid of them". I then realized I was stuck between wanting simplicity and being sucked into consumerism/marketing and keeping up with the Jones'. It was a real dilemma but I started watching TH-cam and researching organization systems and stumbled across a comment by a man on some blog and he said to all the women "You don't need to organize it you just need less stuff". It was a lightbulb moment. I wonder if it was Joshua Becker LOL. It's taken YEARS to get ahold of the chaos and it's always a work in progress as we all know stuff keeps coming in. I finally had a moment in the store recently where I was able to talk myself out of buying something AGAIN and that felt like incredible progress. To be able to self correct and recognize that you didn't like that product the last time or that it is for your fantasy self or you already have something that can do the same job sounds simple but it's not. It takes a self awareness muscle that needs a lot of building. Finally, I've discovered that I was a person who would start a home project and get bored 3/4 the way through and start another one leaving clutter here and there. Again, I had to recognize the problem and stop the behavior so that project clutter wasn't everywhere. Clutter comes in so many forms from toys to clothes, collectibles, house projects and groceries! I wish I had video taped all of the stuff I have gotten rid of over the years. God Bless you and your work.

I am so inspired by you. I watch 2 or 3 of your older videos every morning while drinking my coffee. Most of my adult life my home has been very neat and clutter free. When I was a single mom with 2 children I could move everything we owned except my couch in my car. I had a water bed and the kids beds went on the roof. Since my husband passed away my house has become a disaster area and I am always stressed and depressed. Embarrassed to even have family over. Thanks to you and the Flylady I am slowly getting clutter free in my little 900 SF home. Keep up the good work. Debbie

Dawn, I subscribed to your channel 3 years ago, and since then, you’ve taught me so much. My home functions better now, and my husband loves it! He’s the first to fill a box with things he no longer wants and donates it without thinking twice about it. Thank you for putting out such great content! It’s like cleaning and decluttering with a friend by my side. Thank you!! 🥰

Gracious girl, I am so grateful for You. Even at my age (62 now) you've been encouraging me and teaching me how to reduce stress through minimizing clutter. This message you share is ageless and timeless. And I applaud you for stepping out in faith to share your journey and help others to do the same. 🎉 Thank you Dawn!!

You’re so awesome!!! I started watching in early 2018 I think? I was pregnant and living in a 900 square foot 60 year old home.
Now I have a 4 year old, we built our dream home last year, and we’ve gotten rid of SO MUCH STUFF.
We’re still decluttering so much, but we’re so happy, and you’ve been the constant through it all. Thank you for your guiding voice. I love you and your family.

Thanks Dawn for sharing your and your family’s story. That’s so awesome that you ended up being able to buy the house that you grew up admiring. I love the way you open up and share yourself with us. I also appreciate the tips and tricks you share on your channel on how to become a minimalist. I’m new to the process but I’m loving it so far.

Dawn, could you address how to encourage an Over Thinker. Also any suggestions for retired folks who struggle physically with decluttering.. like removing heavy pieces. It's a humbling chapter of life and easier to just keep items rather than find help to get it out.

I have been on my decluttering journey for almost 5 years and I have resonated with you most on my journey. I have decluttered so much that now its more just watching the inventory coming in and doing a weekly declutter. I could even just do a monthly declutter instead of a weekly declutter because I dont think I could even filla box every week because i have done so much decluttering over the years I am however still in the process of finding home for some thing in my home but moat have homes though. You should do a video on the homes for each thing in your home and do it with your cleaning friends to see their homes for all their things in their home to give us ideas.

I have been watching you for several years and, as a few others have commented, feel like we are friends. In my humble opinion, your videos have always been informative, gracious and entertaining. I want to "tune in" to see what you and your family have been up to. I watch your sister's as well. I am in a completely different phase of my life, grandmother of 13, working at an elementary school in my retirement job, living in a major Southern CA city and still I learn from what you share. Thank you for continuing so steadfastly to share what you do.

Good job Dawn, your background in marketing and radio is evident. You are clear, friendly and encouraging. I called my brother yesterday to say I was coming to visit, and he replied I was going to ask you to come help me with my house! Dawn, your collaboration with Cas the Clutterbug and Dana from A Slob Comes Clean has given me so much-mostly compassion for myself and my family in terms of “stuff”. I feel prepared to be of real help to my brother. BTW, we are both in our 60’s and love “cool things” and inherited “treasures” from our parents’ house. Now I can be there with love-and helpful ideas! Thanks!

This podcast was such a pleasure to listen to. I am a degreed Home Economist and fully enjoy your content. I’m retired now, but only wish TH-cam and podcasts were around when I was younger. Even now, I would love to be a life skills coach specifically in managing the home. You are such an inspiration.
I had to smile when you said going to separate schools gave you the first time experience of hearing your own name. I’ve known two sets of identical twins, one who lives near by, I admit, I never know who I’m talking to until well into the conversation!
