  • Freeze drying is a great way to preserve your fruits and vegetables. We absolutely love our Harvest Right. I still enjoy canning and dehydrating too but the freeze dryer allows us to do so many things that you can't can or dehydrate and the shelf life is amazing. We have other freeze dried videos as well on things like milk, cheese, and eggs. When properly stored, freeze dried foods can last 20-25 years!

      We have been sooooo happy with it! It just amazes me how the food tastes exactly the same as it did before it was freeze dried.

    I have discovered I need to heat seal the mylar bags 3 - 4 times to make sure the seal holds.

    If you blanch them beforehand, the skin will be better.

    so no problem with the skins rehydrating??

      I don’t mind it. I will say once reconstituted it’s better for a casserole or sautéed. It won’t bread and fry well. It’s also pretty good just left freeze dried as a chip alternative, just season it before you freeze dry.

    How long does it take to make a batch?

    • @Henleehomestead
      @Henleehomestead  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I didn’t freeze dry any this year because we’re in the process of moving and the video you saw was from last so I can’t remember for sure but I do remember it was close to 2 full days for a batch. Anything with seeds or skin takes a long time.

    Have u tried potatoes in there - like jacket potato’s etc ? Wondered how they would freeze Dry ?

      Diced potatoes and mashed potatoes have done great. It’s like the ones you can buy at the store but they don’t taste like a box 😉

    How do you find the skin on the zucchini after rehydrating?

    • @Henleehomestead
      @Henleehomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      I cook mine rather than eat it raw and it’s just like if I had cooked it fresh 🙂

    What are ur thoughts of dehydrater vs freeze dryer ?

    • @Henleehomestead
      @Henleehomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are great ways to preserve food. A freeze dryer is capable of preserving way more things than a dehydrator but is a lot more expensive to purchase and may not be an option for a lot of people. I personally prefer using my freeze dryer to the dehydrator but I still think the dehydrator is a valuable and useful tool. This Wednesday’s video will be on the dehydrator and Fridays will be the freeze dryer and I will get into that a little bit more in those videos 🙂
