    How to patch bad stucco matches.

    This how-to video explains how to fix or repair ugly or bad window patches.
    It would help to first recognize the previous plastered texture when matching any new stucco texture.
    They rely on your skill or time to find the easiest way to correct the situation.
    As long-time applicators or most plastering professionals, we need only look at the problem to instantly understand how to correct it.
    Material knowledge of any trade is needed.
    In this video, I use La Habra stucco with a fine sand finish, as the previous guys used; I have to use the same sand or finish to match their finished work.
    • Apply a skip trowel te... Here’s what this guy wanted to do spread a skip trowel texture with the base coat. It’s not as easy as folks think unless you have some time to practice.
    • Stucco around a new wi... Apply stucco to a newly installed window.
    • Waterproofing new wind... Install lath to a window before stucco.
    • Matching Stucco textur... Apply stucco texture fixes wrong patching window.
    • Bad stucco patches, ho... Re-texturing ugly stucco.

      Good Evening, Jocelyn, this is something I have filmed before, however, we don't do the painting.
      our patchwork should be cured for at least 28 days before the homeowner or contractor paints.
      FYI, I notice all the patchwork in exterior plastering that I have ever done or by all others, "always," as this is what I do for a living, no one can patch a door, window or anything else I can't notice immediately.
      The idea is I do the best I can for folks when hired when painted has every patch I've done over the years matched perfectly? No.
      Stucco patching cannot be done throughout one's lifetime and be perfect every time.
      This unrealistic talent is not for a mortal man.
      However, if folks are sitting in a hot tub getting drunk and high, and thoughts of exciting conversations or sex, is dominated by,
      "Hey, who did that bad patchwork?"
      Then there's a problem with my repairs.
      Thus, I would have to repair once more at my expense.
      Peace, love and happiness to all.

    I watched a lot of your videos, this channel is like a teaching lab at a tech school for plastering. So far I feel I'm failing student. I've gone through about 8 bags of quikrete stucco base repairing four repair areas in my stucco home and the end result is pretty good in my opinion, not professional for sure but good enough for three coat system. So far, at least four of the eight bags ended up the ground because my hawk and trowel skills are in serious trouble. I even mixed up one bag just to practice transfer from my hawk to my trowel skills and I must be doing something wrong but I may have stumbled upon something. keeping the small load on my hawk helps and taking it either off the top or bottom, I've found that by squeezing the mix between the hawk and trowel during the transfer itself seems to help keep the mix on my trowel long enough to make it to the wall. If I just rely on scooping it off with the trowel alone, and not applying slight pressure between the hawk /trowel, the material slips immediately off my trowel and ends up coating my shoes and the ground below.. Trying various slump ratios at the moment but not nearly as efficient as you make it look. Bought two more bags for practice mix that I'm going to try tomorrow. Any suggestions Jedi master?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Howdy Dudes,
      As a rule, I always prefer a trowel at least 2 to 4 inches longer than the largest hawk which is 14 inches, for reason of not dropping/spilling mud when working 8 hour days.
      Heres a question for you to ask your fellow plasterers, I've already interviewed about 20, so I know the answer, to the question I am going to propose you ask, your fellow plasterers,
      "why do you take mud for the top of your hawk?"
      That method technically involves pulling mud while at the same time twisting he hawk for your next pull, then repeat until your hawk is empty.
      The average plasterer does this time-consuming technique from 3 to 6 times to empty his hawk, plus drops much mud in the process.
      My method and millions of others are to tilt the fully loaded hawk slightly downwards and allow gravity to drop the mud on my congo trowel, apply this mud to the wall, then turn the hawk once more, to tilt the remaining mud on my hawk once more for my next and often the last trowelful.
      This method takes on average two moves to empty mud from my Plastering hawk.
      FYI, when anyone starts to apply cement plaster at first, there are muscles in your forearm, wrist and deltoid and shoulders that you more than likely didn’t know existed.
      These muscles are rarely used in everyday living.
      Thus they will feel like they are on fire or swell up when you start to apply plaster, no worries, this is an excellent sign of unused and still weak muscles, not hurt muscles.
      then when that beautiful pain is gone, begin again.
      Your wrist, forearms or shoulders will burn, but that's o.k.
      For the average person, it takes a week or two to get those unused muscles strong enough to move mud where you want it.
      FYI, if you fall off a bike and hurt your leg, that's a bad pain or soreness, to strengthen muscles you didn’t know you had, this effort creates a beautiful soreness.
      Peace, love, and harmony to all

      Good Evening, Sharkey, I have heard this before, however, it takes as a rule 28 days for the stucco to cure before painting.
      it's tough enough to make videos let alone have to keep track of when a homeowner may decide to paint.

    I recently had some electrical work done to move an outdoor outlet in order to install an in-wall doggie door. In order to move the outlet, they had to punch holes in the stucco wall, and now I need to fix it. I have most of the tools needed to repair the holes, but I am not able to find small quantities of backing paper or house wrap for what would be (3) 4in x 4in holes that need to be repaired. I have seen a number of your TH-cam videos, and have shown me a lot. Do you have any guidance on where to find this material to begin patching?
    Thanks.

  • @donaldlee6760
    @donaldlee6760 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome tip on the bulldog demo hammer! - Will the owner need to paint the entire wall (or even the entire building?) to match the new stucco? It seems a shame since that massively gigantic wall is a maintenance-free finish. I would have been tempted to ask you to try and get close to the same color (obviously it's impossible to color match faded and dirty 50+ year old stucco) just to not lose that maintenance-free finish. Another idea is if the stucco was cut out tight when removing the old window, then a wood trim could cover the perimeter of the new window and cover the patch. Yeah, it would be funny looking if only two out of the 30 windows were wood trimmed but a maintenance free finish is desirable in my opinion.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Donald, all true, there are many ways to skin a cat.
      The best method would be to do the patch work, then re-skim the entire wall, voila, a clean maintenance free wall once more. Happy new years.🍻

    Great job on explaning plastering finishing techniques. Have you ever done interior plastering, with looks of cast concrete without special overpriced concrete effect materials?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evening Norbertas, yes I have done this too, before.
      This is difficult, today they sell rubber forms to stamp on the wet stucco to create the illusion of concrete.
      The skill part is to know how to line these rubber stamps on and whether the cement plaster is not to wet or dry.
      It's just like doing stamped concrete which I did for my backyard only much more difficult on a wall.

    Hey Kirk,
    I have watched a few of your videos on youTube and thank you very much, they are very informative! I have a question about for helping a friend with a DIY project. She wanted the inside of her studio which is a painted block to be plastered with a random looking texture like a skip trowel finish. I wanted to make sure my understanding was correct before attempting. I was planning on first using a wire brush to rough up the surface then clean well. Next apply a bonding agent such as weldcrete or quikcrete then apply a skim coat. Could I apply the skip trowel finish while skim coating instead of floating it smooth and then paint after it has properly cured or would I need to skim coat and then apply a finish coat on top of that? Thank you for any advice and thanks again for your awesome videos!

    Hi Kirk, i’ve tried applying stucco once, about 40 years ago. A friend and I stuccoed a shed in his backyard the stucco scratch coat kept falling off. LoL❗️ Can you help explain if there is a technical reason why l need to start or begin applying a scratch coat at the top of the wall and work my way down? Also I have a 3 foot flat soffit with a vent continuous around the roof. Should I do begin the soffit before beginning wall or after?
    Thanks .
