  • Repair missing concrete stucco at the bottom of a wall.
    Fill it back up where the ground has settled, as it's normal.
    Folks, we are located in Oakland, Ca.
    Howdy Folks, all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

    Why does the foundation show on the stucco bottom walls anyway?
    Missing stucco at the bottom of most stucco walls is usually caused by ground settling.
    Hello ambitious guys and gals interested in learning how to do it yourself, now possibly you can.
    How? Watch this video to explain. We show and explain how to repair a foundation with stucco and cement plaster; the idea is to make it look good again so it’s not such an eyesore.
    FYI, ground settling is as natural as white rice.
    Perhaps this example will provide an easier understanding of what I’m referring to.
    When I was an apprentice working for big plastering firms, the company I worked for was hired to stucco a new theater in Blackhawk.
    I was working on this gun crew that blew the stucco onto the walls of this large movie theater. As usual, we stopped the stucco on the ground.
    Jump ahead 35 years later. I am now a plastering contractor.
    I got a call from a general contractor saying the bottoms of this same movie theater had cement about six-inches to a foot pointing outward horizontally a foot above the ground. That was nearly the stucco that fell and was not cleaned up, thus stuck to the concrete foundation and then showed as the dirt compacted.
    I point this out to our subscribers and all who find themselves on this channel for whatever reason, as what we’re doing is common and not costly.
    We show and explain how you can do it for the cost of materials.
    I charged a few hundred bucks to fix this eyesore.
    In 1980 a new rule or code came out that specified all new homes would have weep or drip metal screeds around the bottom perimeter hung an inch below the mud sill. The rule was that the stucco be at least 6 inches in a perfect world, this world is far from perfect.
    Before 1980, most stucco homes brought stucco on top of the concrete foundation.
    That means 80% of all homes in the country have the stucco touching the ground, big deal, my own home also had the stucco touching the ground.
    FYI, folks’ ground settling is normal.
    However, it gives the impression that stucco is missing at the bottom of the house instead of the ground compacting.
    All subscribers with a question, type your question into our channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it’s done.

    Kirk, thank you a million times! My house is much like that one with the same problems. I patched the cracks with stucco patch working late in the day and on about a third of them, the crack was back in a month. I worried it meant my foundation was shot and increased my insurance for the coming collapse.
    Your tips on timing and product helped me so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Super helpful videos for my 95 yo house. In this this repair job, it seems the bottom of the stucco sits on the ground which has been dug out 2" . Since fill-in dirt is likely to cover the lower stucco again, any concerns about moisture weakening the bottom of that repair? I live in Florida = lots of ground moisture, :-)

    Hi Kirk! What is the difference when you say skim coat and color coat it. Is it different cement? Also notice that when you applied the second coat you didn't apply the weldcrete and didnt know you could apply weldcrete to the wet surface.
    Thanks

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy A skim coat means a coat that is about a half inch thick. A color coat is one-eighth of an inch think and considered the last coat which does not need painting.
      A bonding agent between the scratch coat and the brown coat is not necessary, however make certain the first coat, the scratch coat, is moist so the second coat or what's called the brown coat will adhere properly.👨🏻‍🔬

    Hello Kurt I just started watching your videos. Few years back I couldn't find anything on stucco on TH-cam and I thought of starting a Channel. You have it all so I don't have to now. Just had a question about accelerants, I've never use them but always wanted to. I'm from Canada. I've never seen any at the distributers so far perhaps maybe some concrete suppliers. Can you buy them from Home Depot? Also what is the name and spelling of the accelerant?

      Hi Brent Watier good question, the stucco or cement plaster accelerator we use is called Luminite, I believe it's only sold at the professional plastering yards,
      the stuff cost about 50 bucks a bag, and gets old once it's opened, unless your using a lot it may not be beneficial for you,

    So, at the very bottom of the wall, stucco is touching dirt. Won't stucco suck up the moisture from dirt after a good rain, what's your solution to prevent moisture going into the stucco > foundation > wood farming. what can be used as a moisture barrier as these older house they are stuccoed all the way to dirt.

      Portland cement mixed with sand is called stucco.
      Portland cement mixed with rocks is called concrete.
      Stucco cement to sand ratio
      How much sand for each coat of stucco?
      Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 3 to 5 parts sand, and finish coats are 1 part cement to 1-1/2 to 3 parts sand.
      Most times we mix 3 parts sand to every one part cement plaster. The cement plaster I use is premium based Portland cement, it has lime and common in it.

    Hi Kirk. Is weld Crete ok to use as a waterproofing solution? We poured new concrete today I wanted to waterproof that new concrete and then lay pavers. Please advise

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Greetings, Jae, no, weld creat is a bonding adhesive. I have not used it as a moister barrier, but poured concrete, is very good at preventing rainwater from entering homes. Worst that can happen is water penetrating and causing some moisture on the inside.
      Of course, if the concrete poured on the outer perimeter is used below grade, and there is living space on the inside, that's not good.

      Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. thank you for getting back to me. Seems like the guys at the mason supply are wrong in telling me that this product would be good for waterproof. The reason why I pored concrete was because the porch is above a living room and I have have water leaking over 30 years. I hope to get a better solution to fix this issue I also pitched the concrete away from the house

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Evening Jae I googled weld crete as I became interested, I never heard Larson's weld creat to be waterproof, their words below.
      Is Weld-Crete® a water retardant or water barrier?
      Once the new concrete is fully cured, Weld-Crete® is unaffected by humidity or condensation. It is not intended for use as a water barrier. It is not recommended for use where hydrostatic pressure is present.
      That being said, once you removed the old cement and repaired, I take it you applied a moisture barrier such as a peel and stick, like Bituthene? Hopefully, you did.
      If you didn't, newly poured concrete takes forever for the water to penetrate it, but it's not waterproof, it would take a long time for water to penetrate newly poured cement, and as long as it doest crack, you may be fine.
      If you have doubts, purchase a bucket of Dry-Vit or stucco-flex for waterproofing concrete membrane and roll on a couple of coats in a month when the concrete is poured.
      It would be a real drag watching tv and having a few cold ones then find rain dripping on your head.

    I have watched every of your videos. Some twice.

    One question:
    I’m going to parge my 100+ year old home.
    It’s in remarkably great shape, but I’d like to see a nice clean new finish on the foundation.
    I’m proned to choose a Portland/Sand instead of Rapid set to give myself a bit more than 15 minutes to work it.
    Is there a difference in the end result of natural color (Portland vs. Rapid set)?
    I’d be looking for a more brown result than light gray to go with the medium tan vinyl siding/black shutters on my home and it seems that Rapid set is a light gray.
    Thank you again for always taking the time for the DIY’ers.
    Btw…I’m a 61 year old woman who is a perfectionist and not afraid of hard work. (Lifting the cement bags)

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy, I'd recommend the rapid set as if purchased in bags or boxes you can add two packets of retardant's which will be white in color when dried, plus the two packs will give you now 40 minutes.
      no matter how skilled, young or strong someone is, get someone to mix for you.
      Portland will give an appearance in color to your sidewalk, which is nice.

      Wahnfried Duke Hello Wahnfried Duke, The cement plaster was called Lehigh's white cement, same as Lehigh's grey cement, (i had an open bag so I used this) before we added some Lumnite, Calcium Aluminate Cement, thus it became this color.
      I would apply the bonding agent in the area you wish it to adhere and 4 to 6 inches around as sometimes when we float the color gets further than we want,

    hi Kirk. thanks so much for sharing your info. I respect your skill and have learned from you. I have a stucco house where I'm redoing the bathroom and I've found a ton of wood rot in the wood cladding below the stucco. I figure I'll replace the studs that are rotted ~ but when it comes to removing the cladding and possibly replacing it~ that seems harder to do from the inside and wouldn't seat up agains the stucco perfectly anyway. does stucco need the support of the wood cladding behind it? or would it do ok if I just replace the studs and pack the remaining space between the studs and stucco with mud? the studs are spaced 16" on center. without cladding can stucco stand on its own. This is a rear wall with little no exterior traffic

      Good evening Lisa, thank you, excellent question.
      it's sort of like you imagine,
      On the professional side of building, there is the all super important foundation.
      This is important for a simply home here in the U.S. as to the tallest skyscraper in the world such as the one in Dubai, half mile high into the sky.
      Homes here in the U.S. back in 1975 were now required to have a metal drip screed installed properly,it's a 4 inch metal flashing installed below and fastened to the mud sill to protect the important foundation top piece of wood that sit on top of the foundation, "the mud sill"
      This code requirement was created to give a new home a stucco stop, and a natural expansion joint with the drip screed and allow any rainwater to flow out of for maintenance free stucco finishes on top of the concrete foundation harmlessly.
      Today possible one quarter of the homes have maintenance free finishes if that.
      How come the majority of homes built in the U.S. do not have drip screeds?
      Great question, glad you asked, because they were built prior to the 1975 screed requirement.
      This code has nothing to do with bugs, I have heard this strange connection to bugs for well over the 35 plus years that I have been in this trade and will more than likely continue to hear this rumor, it is just a myth, fact is bugs can't go between stucco and concrete, however with a drip screed this make the wall "More" susceptible to bugs such as termites,
      FYI, Termites are mainly attracted to wood which stays wet. best wishes,
      Kirk giordano

I have ran into a supposed example of stucco skirting being applied ground contact,no drip screed, NO SHEATHING?? My question is this even possible? and how?

    • @StuccoPlastering

      Howdy Zack, good question, allow to almost harden take a wet margin trowel and follow the sidewalk to give an expansion joint.
      Keep the margin trowel wet by cleaning often or the stucco will stick not allowing a perfect line with no clinkers.

    Hi Kirk, I’ve been watching your videos and tried my first crack at putting stucco on cinder block and it didn’t stick well (and really pissed me off). My question is can I try to add another layer of stucco over my first layer tomorrow?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good Evening Jack, but of course you can, before you try to apply another layer, take a water hose and spray off any dust, dont allow the cinder block to dry completely, but instead, to stay moist, the new stucco should adhere much better.

    I have a side wall where dirt has been up against the wall for as long as I can remember. I recently had a corner lifted and the stucco broke around the braces that lifted the house. I pulled back the dirt and just finished the repair and was planning on pushing the dirt back, Some of the old stucco had been poorly applied but I didn't care because I had planned on just covering the stucco. Now I hear not too? The unsightly foundation braces were supposed to be covered but the contractor could not cover one brace because of the hill. Now I am trying to figure out how to cover that brace. I could plant some kind a bush in front and lay ground cover but the slope probably won't keep the bark in place. I don't know how to protect my finished stucco. I see in the photo that the grassy area is up against the stucco - I just have dirt.
