Stop calling it a "icosahedron" That's a lowly name. It's a gyroelongated pentagonal bipyramid

It's actually a Snub Tetratetrahedron.

1:47 Ah, yes the elements of which everything is comprised: campfire, turnip garden, lobster king, sunshine and finally, bird.
I mean, they are comprised out of protons, neutrons and electrons, you can make some pretty wacky stuff with them
_THE B I R D_
The most basic of elements indeed.
But everything changed when the Campfire Nation attached.
Adam Mandić you are composed of homosexual
"Modern measurements have shown that this isn't how the solar system works"
Okay but Kepler was PRETTY DAMN CLOSE you can't deny how almost-perfect it is
Dr Scrubbington He was very accurate with regards to where the planets were, but he was VERY wrong about why they were there.
Kepler was a great scientist (since physicist was not a term then) and it's obvious that he was incredibly genius, so he had to be very close( just like scientist today are to the quantum physics)
The legacy of Greek philosophy was a mixed bag. The concept of logic, applied math, and scrutiny definitely aided progress, but at the same time these obsessions with all of these particular notions like Plato's forms, Plato's solids, Aristotle's notions of physics being based on these quasi-mystical ideas of cosmic place etc. were definitely impediments when they were clung to dogmatically. I think there's a lesson in that for our own modern times. Abstracting might be the essence of good science, but ONLY when the model actually fits the data, and NOT just because it seems pretty and orderly. Kepler was in that intellectual milieu and so of course he was influenced by its prejudices towards favoring all things classical, passed down as received wisdom from the great masters.
Yeah, but a lot of planets and stuff ave his name
We still don't know what is upthere why ir his don't let them fool you!!
he probably forgot Vsauce's main channel's password and that's why he's uploading it here
True
Very original comment, alittalien
I think it has more to do with his Red series, Mind Field. TH-cam probably has a contract on the main channel so he's not allowed to post regular content there, so instead he posts here.
Razer1103 there’s no way that’s true. TH-cam wouldn’t stifle creators like that, especially if they have a TH-cam Red series. I think it’s because this is more of a mini video; he doesn’t go off on many tangents. Instead, he completely focused on the Mysterium Cosmographicum
Lol
Want to have a unique intro? Just crabwalk into the frame naked
I was hoping he'd raise his hands like claws, but you can't have everything I guess
Agreed

A Platonic solid is what I get put in when I ask out a woman

The shame cube is a platonic solid
Sometimes you get a love triangle. Sometimes you get a dodecahedron of previous lovers.
You, a simpleton: "I am going swimming".

Well, sure it did. That's the result of having a mind that is in the gutter.

The thrill of knowing that all this time I was playing DnD with platonic solids. Thank you, Michael.
All of them are Platonic solids except the d10, which is a Pentagonal trapezohedron
@@ethanjacobrosca7833 is there a better 10-faced dice? the pentagonal trapezohedron just looks wrong.
@@aguyonasiteontheinternet578 I am not sure, but making a Platonic solid with ten faces seems impossible

Michael, Did you forget your VSauce's account password?
I think it's because of the Mind Field series he does on TH-cam Red (money) that he stopped making Vsauce videos, or he forgot his password .
He also does braincandy now, if you like, were watching
He just wants anyone to praise his DONG
SleepySkull he’s stopped doing it for fun, now it’s for money
SkonTeam: Agreed. But I see it more of as TH-cam Red has claimed and taken all rights that he can't post these types of videos there "freely" during the contract.
I like where this channel is going...
honestly the only reason I subscribed to this channel is because Micheal started uploading interesting content here
Amen
Thanks!
Hey Vsauce, Micheal here teach me
This channel is pure Dolan Dark material
4:01 if I’m not mistaken, I believe Michael just anyway’d Plato.
He really does gradually become more and more insane with each episode

Michael is a living walking proof that having a good teacher is everything. Good teacher can make learning so much more enjoyable and interesting. The way he talks about it is so passionate and contagious.
" thank you for watching" ..... That whole outro was so nice.... very well done I loved the animations with the vibe of the song
Dnd dice make up the universe? Thats pretty metal. Hahahaha
Eh, I use plastic dice
Haha. Who uses metal dice?
when math meets avatar the last airbender.. "the 5 prime elements n polygons" lol
You know you‘re a smart man when you can mock greek philosophers.
To be fair any dumbass can
But Michael's got the knowlegde to back it up.
I don't study science ( I'm a nurse, so I have a little notion of it), and these abstract things would go over my head if some university professor tried to explain me. Michael is an exellent storyteller and is so good at explaining and showing the ideas/theories/mathsjizzle without making it to complicated and without forcing his opinion.
Never stop doing what you're doing Michael.

Pfft. Don' waste my time with that! (Get outta here!)
My mom and I got the curiosity box for my dad, and he absolutely loved it! My dad and I actually fought over the shirt and we're totally getting another one. The book it came with was so interesting, and I loved the little collectables it came with too!
I live for Vsauce 1 and 3 content (and 2, but that’s more like, chilling on an afternoon content)
the only problem is that this is not the vsauce channel, its the dong channel,
But it’s still Michael. And I was just making a statement because I felt like it...
Ö _ come on vsauce 2 is great too

i am your refreshing glass of lemonade. drink me in.
I like how he’s so meta that he knows he’s a meme

8:42 "And the ratios between the radii of these six spheres, matched the distances of those six known planets from the Sun."
I am passing out. That's awesome. And even if it isn't the very exact measurements, they are still very similar, and TBH it wasn't mentioned in the video if there was ever a time in our Solar System in which they might have.

"Each [platonic solid] is made up of congruent, regular, polygon faces and have the same number of faces meeting at each vertex."
Okay, but wouldn't that include the regular star polyhedra?
Wikipedia's article on regular polyhedron has has the same requirements and includes the regular star polyhedra:
"The faces are congruent regular polygons which are assembled in the same way around each vertex."
Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_polyhedron#mw-content-text
The platonic solids are the *convex* regular polyhedra.

@@TheTomatoWatcher No, the intersections aren't "verticies" at all!
Someday I hope to get a VSauce video covering more than just the platonic solids and going into Dark Geometry.
Please. I wanna see Michael marvel over the great stellated dodecahedron or the mutetrahedron or the infinite tilings.
Seeing this comment reminded me of a video called,”there are 48 regular polyhedra.” It might not be as entertaining as vsauce, but nonetheless an interesting video. And yes, the video did mentioned the regular ster polyhedra.
For all the people saying that there are 48 regular polyhedra, that is very true, but michael was talking about bounded convex shapes (not explicitly stated in the definition of a Platonic solid by Plato but platonic solids are classed as refular regular polyhedra that fall under this category), so no stellated dodecahedrons or euclidean tilings.

this video somehow combined d&d and minecraft with geometry and astronomy and i love it. some of my favourite things in this world.
so basically this video is just one giant merch plug
and so far its the best one ive ever seen
Best ad ever.
I live for Thicc Micheal.
6:48 Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.
Bop Heart good luck with Aang, hope he reaches his full potential
My childhood
I was wondering where all my Vsauce videos went, and I only now have realised that the content on this channel feels more like main Vsause than it feels like the old Dongs. Wonderful.
I remember playing with kinnex as a kid and being amazed when I made my first dodecahedron. There's something truly special about that shape to the brain
Michael has a crush on Plato.

I literally watched this video 10x or even more but still enjoy the hell out of it you''re awsome Michael!
Whoa this was posted a month ago.... I've been trying to connect it all for myself, for a long time now and I finally was like let me check TH-cam. I just like using my books and then looking a few things up here and there but still trying to grasp it like the whole model for the past few months indefinitely. But it's great that you Michael have recently done a video on this so I'll probably understand it a lot better now. Thank you much take care
DONG intros never disappoint, so dank.
get this guy to do Cosmos 3 series. Also hire Arthur Issac the TH-camr as a co-writer
Ngl, this video is hard to watch after having seen Jan Misali's video about regular Polyhedra, and hearing Michael say the platonic solids are the only ones
8:52
I'm actually starting to believe that idea
PETITION TO BRING BACK VSAUCE
Dang, I still have soooooo many UNANSWERED questions! THERE'S SOOOOOO MANY VSAUCE TOPICS OUT THERE!
Michael i love the funny way you explain science, you were made for this! Keep up the good work
"But in 3 dimensions there are only 5 regular polytopes."
Me, an intellectual who's watched jan Misali's video on the 8 regular polyhedra: Well yes, but actually no.
You mean the 48 regular polyhedra
6:32 "ohhh yes"
I miss "Hey Vsauce, Michael here"
When I watch Micheal I forget all the pain and sadness, he makes me smile
This is addictive. Cant stop watching your videos!
Once I had a really profound dream about life and the universe and I remember I was in my house and this being asked me if I was platonic. I don't think I even knew what platonic meant at that time. Then I did some research and I'm finding out a lot about this subject! I also learned that some of the Platonic shapes actually occur in nature. This made me think about the different shapes and how some of the fundamental things in the universe are made from these shapes. It also makes me think about the similarities of these shapes with vibration and frequency. How water droplets actually form complex geometric shapes with certain frequencies. Since our bodies supposedly contain water does that mean that different frequencies resonate differently within us? Do they affect us directly? Can we change our frequency and state of vibration? How? What happens if we can? So many questions left unanswered...
0:28 he didn't even glance at the box he caught!
And that is why d&d is the best.
Natzvids .!. IT'S GOT ALL OF DEM!

Shark Attack And the d10 is kinda the -third- sixth wheel
obviously, d10s are evil and should be avoided at all costs. i vote we replace them with d12s - those don’t get enough love as is anyway
Broooooooo imagine thinking there are only five regular polyhedra when literally everyone ever knows there are 48
we need to petiton micheal to make an updated video
There are actually 48 regular polytopes in 3D
This was a beautiful and interesting episode, a pleasure to watch.
Thank you Michael and your team.
Not just Plato, but Pythagoras would be proud of this video too. Nicely done, Michael!
I love the videos where he just messes around and builds things and puts shape peices together to make new, cooler shapes.
I miss the old D.O.N.G. format with all the weird and wacky websites.
I still enjoyed this video but it was more LUT than D.O.N.G.

Kenway Hunter He's talked a lot about trying comedy and appreciating meme "culture". I think "bait" seems more devious than what Michael's doing, but he is aware of his quirky humor.
Wait, i thought that by the time Kepler was was inspirational, Copernicus' sun-center theory was already picking up steam.
Not exactly. Copernicus had theorized it, but it wasn't until about a hundred years later that people began accepting it scientifically. In fact, the ancient Greek astronomer Aristarchus was the first to theorize it in the 3rd century BC, and Copernicus actually attributed his theory to him. But it went silent for 18 centuries before Copernicus finally revived the theory.
