I've been watching vsauce since I was a kid, like 12 - 13. I'm 17 now and I still regularly go back and watch every video. Its fascinating to see myself grow up through these videos. 3 years ago I had no clue how an object could move out of the way fast enough for light on the other side to meet your eye, but I get it now! It's true that in space you age slower, but you kinda age faster too. Well, kinda. The effects that gravity has on bone mass. The lower amount of gravity that you're exposed to, the quicker you lose bone mass. It's strange. Edit: I realized a second after I posted that I spelled "effects" incorrectly :(.

Well my friend, I don't know. What's the point of anything? Why research Physics or go to school or eat food when eventually everything will be gone and nothing we did remains? They willingly risk their lives for the progress of mankind knowing fully it could be for nothing. That person knows that there is chance they'll return to nothing. Their trip will last them 20 years but on Earth it'll last 20,000. They know that when they return, everything they knew will be different. Everyone the knew or loved will long be dead and forgotten. The country they launched from may not exist anymore, maybe not even the continent. This person knows all this yet they still choose to do it. That's crazy right? This person knows they are voluntarily giving up everything and they still do it?! That person must be insane! Well, probably a little. But I think there is something else. I believe there is an innate desire and motivation in humans to push ourselves forward and advance our society. I personally have a deep seeded morale responsibility to try and push humans forward, to make someone's life better but most importantly, to make people want to ask questions. I may be crazy but I think all humans have a basic desire to think this way. The way I see it, if you aren't constantly pushing yourself or humanity forward, then what the hell are you doing?
Another thing I wish he'd mentioned: you don't FEEL like time is going slower. You just get there and your clock is behind those who didn't move as fast.
I see the purpose for those traveling there, as they get there faster. However, something about the 'having to wait 20,000 years' for those left behind makes the whole endeavour somewhat pointless, if ever we travel at 0.9999999 etc% the speed of light, only those venturing to the destination will need to care about what they find scientifically. After 20,000 years on Earth, people may no longer care, people may no longer know, or simply there may no longer be any people to receive the information. It's great for those going, but for those left behind, there is little point in sending anybody at those speeds in order to obtain deeper knowledge because of the time it takes to receive it.

The country they launched from may not exist anymore, maybe not even the continent. This person knows all this yet they still choose to do it. That's crazy right? This person knows they are voluntarily giving up everything and they still do it?! That person must be insane! Well, probably a little. But I think there is something else. I believe there is an innate desire and motivation in humans to push ourselves forward and advance our society. I personally have a deep seeded morale responsibility to try and push humans forward, to make someone's life better but most importantly, to make people want to ask questions. I may be crazy but I think all humans have a basic desire to think this way. The way I see it, if you aren't constantly pushing yourself or humanity forward, then what the hell are you doing?
Because it's better for them to wait decades than millennia. Saviour Scout doesn't answer the question and instead babbles insanely.
Another thing I wish he'd mentioned: you don't FEEL like time is going slower. You just get there and your clock is behind those who didn't move as fast.
I see the purpose for those traveling there, as they get there faster. However, something about the 'having to wait 20,000 years' for those left behind makes the whole endeavour somewhat pointless, if ever we travel at 0.9999999 etc% the speed of light, only those venturing to the destination will need to care about what they find scientifically. After 20,000 years on Earth, people may no longer care, people may no longer know, or simply there may no longer be any people to receive the information.
It's great for those going, but for those left behind, there is little point in sending anybody at those speeds in order to obtain deeper knowledge because of the time it takes to receive it.
I'm from Idaho and every time somebody literally mentions our existence I get happy!
