    I'm not sure about having one in my own home, but I can see sending a few hundred of them to Mars on the first few flights. They can be programmed to build habitats for humans, so when they arrive they have pre-built quarters. They don't need water, or food, or toilet facilities. They can maneuver around on the surface without suits, or breathing apparatus, they don't need to rest, except to charge the batteries, and if for some reason the ship mal-functions, or blows up, you only lost a few robots, no human lives.

    I think the point about human-shaped robots is the possibility of a generalised multi-functionality... a washing up robot or a floor-vacuuming robot is limited to those specific tasks and certainly don't require AI... But an AI in human shape which could move, act and to a large degree think like a human has virtually unlimited possibilities.

      what shape would a butler, doctor, handyman, cook, cleaner, personal assistant, and bargain grocery shopper be?
      it's hard to make something heavy that can reach stuff and wont stand on your cats' tail as it runs by.
      maybe a 4 -6 legged, 1 armed, stand with a container-forearm that switches grip type/ tool.

  • @raven9ine
    @raven9ine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +107

    Well, sure, for very specific task, robots in a very specific form factor for the task at hand are more efficient, humanoid might not be the best choice for that. However, there's an advantage we humans have over very specific and efficient task focused robots, and that is adaptability and versatility, and in that discipline our humanoid form is actually extremely good. So, if you want a robot being able to accomplish a multitude of task, giving it a humanoid form makes a lot of sense. I mean, your roomba sure can't dust off furniture or go grocery shopping. Legs can overcome obstacles wheels cannot, hands are versatile and can use the same tools humans do. Additionally, there's the factor of familiarity, which might be more important than you might think, for robots that "live" among us.

      Roboticist here: Training dosen't really need to be done in the real world, in fact most of the training done on robots that can be dangerous are mainly done in controlled enviroments and/or simulations with realistic physics engines,more now then ever due to games having hyper realistic graphics. The robots are trained in simulation util its safe enough for them to operate in the real world. Practicaly all robot companies do this as its not only faster but also way cheaper.

    It could mop the staircases, help elderly, distribute mail, maybe do some chores out and inside.
    the human form in that regard could be beneficial, as it could do a variety of tasks. It could be optimized to have a very high occupancy rate!

    I think Elon is thinking that instead of having a hundred robots in our home for each task it is better to have 1 robot that is capable of doing 100 tasks, and that way the economy of scale is able to make these robots are very cheap. It also would make adding new tasks a simple app download instead of buying a new gadget.

    • @Lalakis
      @Lalakis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elon is thinking in terms of marketability. Creating a human looking robot is more appealing than a more efficient tetrapod or flying octopod drone that could do everything far more efficiently with no restrictions of the human form ( reach, only 4 liimbs, power, height ). It is is ridiculous suggesting that these humanoid robots will start using human oriented tools ( imagine this robot using chainsaw to cut down a tree.....) and expect them to be more efficient than a human doing it. The only thing that is good is that we don't care if they die while doing it ( or mining, drilling, constructing etc)

    • @macrumpton
      @macrumpton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Lalakis The robots don’t need to be more efficient than a human, they just need to be cheaper than hiring a human to do the same work. Cheapness is achieved through volume production.

    • @Lalakis

      @@macrumpton Which is why it won't work. Having 10 of these robots doing the work of 2 experienced lumberjacks, instead of 1 cheaper superspecialised lumberjack robot doing the work of 20 lumberjacks.
      But even if I accept the concept of multipurpose robot, a non human form would be far more efficient and probably cheaper. A tetrapod with limbs/arms, propellers and attachable tools would be both cheaper and more efficient than giving a drill hammer to this teslabot and calling it a miner. Or giving it a fire extinguisher and calling it a fireman. It is all marketing. The human form is more marketable than a weird wormlike or tetrapod or spherelike robot.

    Marques has a valid point about human efficiency, however what is likely overlooked is that if you want a robot that can perform a multitude of tasks that are all designed for a human world you either need to build tons of different robots each designed for a specific task with specific software and hardware or build a humanoid robot capable of performing them all.

      Thing is, tons of different robot is easier to train with specific data rather than making a robot that gets to our level.
      We are jack of all trades, master of none
      What data do you feed the AI with ? From where ?
      Vacuum cleaner has to be able to see the surrounding and vacuum clean done. One set of data.
      Now what do you teach the robot ? What if it's not like how you do them normally ?
      We have so many other robots already, what would you use a Tesla bot for ?
      I can only see a use for old or disabled people as they cannot do what I can, but that's it honestly.
      You want bots to be fire fighters? Better to have wheels or more legs to navigate better etc...
      Better to design a product for a specific purpose rather than trying to make one that is suppose to adapt to anything and everything with limiter and inconsistent data.

    Only commenting on the “why a humanoid shape?” question: you touched on it for a moment - the world is built for the humanoid shape. When you make a universal connection like USB, many different products can interface with a computer through a shared shape. Robots can best, and most quickly, interface with the “human-built world” in a humanoid shape.
    The robot will need to always be doing a different combination and order of tasks, like a human. Of course you can build a robot that’s the best at being a vacuum… but then you need a robot for every task. It’s a unitasker. Whereas teslabot, like humans, is a multitasker. And to most easily be a multitasker, just make it human shaped and now it can instantly interface with the entire built world.
    It seems even Boston dynamics is shooting for that with the atlas. Which is more or less human shaped.
    EDIT: another way to look at the robot is like an adapter: it’s the bridge between an infinite variety of tasks and the machine that will do those tasks.
    It doesn’t need to be “better” than a human. Just good enough. Like hiring an intern: they may be ignorant of nearly every task they have to do, but they’re cheap labor and can be used to fill in gaps when needed.

    If you can avoid making it look creepy I think it’s a really good idea to have a humanoid robot. When you think about the tasks you want a robot to do, they’re typically tasks done by humans already. If it’s going to many tasks like carry things for me, or cook food, or sweep up when I break a glass, or help the sick and elderly get dressed in the morning or go to the bathroom. A humanoid would make it the most intuitive to use imo. Would be the most efficient way to utilize a robot, prob not; but, it would add a lot more value to me knowing that I can basically ask it to anything I’d ask an actual person to do. I think Aldo million ways that would be useful to just about anyone. I just wouldn’t want to find that thing creeping around my house at night

    • @jessiejanson1528
      @jessiejanson1528 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      basically, 1 robot for every task, VS 20 expensive robots for 20 different tasks. Like who would want a dishwasher robot? what form factor would that be? I think hes overlooking a great deal of info here. a human shaped robot makes the most sense because it works well in a world built for humans and can use any human tool.
      As for training, he actually doesnt really understand how the training works or how it works in general for AIs. so his points about difficulty training it are entirely inaccurate and false, and prove nothing. overall, he has no valid reason against robots being human shaped.

    Specialized robots are good at 1 thing, but then you need a lot of them. Think of the kitchen, you can get an avocado slicer, and pit remover, and then get a mandoline, and a slapshot to dice vegetables, etc etc... Or you can get a good chef's knife. Sure each of the gadgets is VERY good at one task, but then you have drawers filled with 1 use items. Versatility is huge, and like you said, we live in a world designed for humans, so having a humanoid assistant makes sense not from the "best way to accomplish this task" but from "the 1 device that can accomplish the most tasks"

I think your absolutely right about robotics, all the good robots I can think of are really highly specialised machines designed to perform a specific function. Like I always think of Amazon warehouse robots. That is not something that could be done by a person. That's using data to solve a specific problem. I feel like as far as robots to do the shopping for you, surely you need essentially a shopping trolley? Also does it come in Matt black?

  • @yum8666
    @yum8666 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Maybe it is so it can be utilized in multiple ways? You can make a focused robot for a specific function and it would probably be more efficient efficient than a human like robot. But that robot would only serve one purpose. It can make a table really well, but it can't lift boxes, and grocery shop, and cook like a human bot could.

    Thanks for sharing these ideas!
    I do still prefere the Metahumanoid Shape design aesthetic for Robotic Friends in the future.
    I do like the point you made about the integration of new robot purchases, because you are right in questioning how the robots will recognize our commands.
    I think this integration process will be similar to the 'migration' process like Apple technology. Only it may require a more in depth backup index-intake process. Sort of like auditing your personal property inventory in order to effectively collaborate with your robot helper thinker-do-er machine. This way the robot can communicate with your every and all request for material handling and task oriented chores that can be laborious day in and day out, i.e laundry, vaccumming, dishes, meal prep, etc.
    I think if we pre-trained the robot to target ideal solutions we could use robots to recognize our expectations that can be identical to our imagination or desired results!
    I think with self development momentum from independent up and comming programmers learning to code, we program/app/devs. can upload out codes to the machines and let 'er rip! so to speak.
    Also I see no reason why humanoid shaped robots cannot perfect any and all range of hobbie, professional, day to day, family oriented tasks/chores/assignemnts/activities, etc. once our preferences have been uploaded or created. Easier said than done but I think Telsa is coming up with a lot of the leg work for the future consumer to put these Robots to good use.
    Similar to what Camera Manufacturers do for photographer consumer population, refrigerator manufacturer target consumer populations, etc.
    I think it would be awesome to be able to rely on digital faceless real live robots to be able to complete menial day to day, civilian life-like tasks: cooking, cleaning: dishes, ingredient inventory, menu creations, verification requests like a GPT asking your permission to 'Save" their ideas or execute the task(s).
    I like to think that I see a lot of potential with at home family oriented tasks for the future high end technology consumer population.
