Scraping Hard pack snow in a Crippled Plow Truck

- Its my oldest account at over 28 years & they have a specific way of doing things that makes my job TOUGH. They have 48 hours to clear out-so they can drive and compact the snow for that long before I plow it. But I still love this little one.

I work sales at a Subaru Dealership up in Canada, a couple of weeks ago we had a huge storm and they asked me to plow the lot as their usual guy couldn't make it. Mind you I've never plowed before, only watched your videos. Managed to do the entire lot (around tight corners a new car inventory) without hitting anything... really don't think I would have made it had I not been watching your videos for years lol
Hey Stan, I've had connection problems just like that on my SnowEx plow for 3 years. Replaced the cables and connectors. That fixed it for 1 season. Repeated plugging wears it out. This year replaced them with 150 amp quick connect winch plugs. Works great now and they are fully serviceable. Some of the garbage these manufacturers use just kills me. I've also found most of the time guys like us can trouble shoot, find issues, and make better repairs than dealers can. It's pretty sad.
We are getting our first big snow storm in ottawa tonight. 20 to 30 cm. Around 10 inches. I love your videos and I learn something new each video! Thanks alot!

Had the sane problem with my snow dogg, on your plug with the battery connections in it, the end with the male connections, look and there are a cage spring on the ends of the terminals, replace them. Snow Dogg part #16160402. I replace mine every 2 years. Cost around $10.00

Good to see we're not the only ones that have issues with equipment. It seems like we are constantly repairing stuff. Gets old. We use a lot of dielectric grease. Lol.

Tow it to where the other cars are. In Montreal they tow cars (at no charge) and drop them a block or 2 away

8 years I had my snow dog never had any of these problems. And my dust caps fell off and never had a problem keeping them clean
3 years for me and started with problems in year 2

Reminds me of having a guy or gal stand on the back of the skid loader when the pallet of block your unloading is just a scoche beyond what she’s willing to lift. Not exactly safe but is a great solution
@@OneBadBuick my brand new wideout HD FAILED ME. The lift cylinder had a metal filing stuck in the cnc valve body. Was offline for 6hrs. Dealer handled it. But that’s the only failure I’ve come across in owning 3 and operating many in my tenure. Was surprised and seriously pissed all at the same time. Shes good to go now. Just had some growing pains out of the crate I reckon
I think I recognize this lot. I think last time you felt bad because the one stragler was a mom with her kid. You were super kind to her, and you didn't do anything wrong, but you felt guilty for getting frustrated after a tough day. Frank da man!
Great stuff! I really like long-term clients. It says a lot about you as a business owner that you’re able to maintain a long-term client.
With my big apt complexes I open up the auxiliary overflow lot and drive lane, tenants are told that as soon as they hear or see me they have to move cars, if they don't move cars their stall don't get cleaned up, most tenants are good about moving cars, most tenants will tell the others that I am outside plowing the lot, its a pretty good system. It kinda makes it a little bit difficult when the tennant don't move a car but its their loss if they choose not to move car. In the end the parking lots are nearly spotless and considering its tight parking lots it ends up 98% clean
We used to give our residents 12 hours after an event to move their cars to the outer lots so we could clear the inner courtyards. those that either refused to or cried they couldnt cuz of the snow got their cars towed to the outer lot. the really a-hole stubborn resident that sued us for towing his 'summer' car ended up getting it buried under 4 feet of snow ;p
@@harveylong5878 I have a arsenal of equipment I can bring to property to circumvent thr lazy tenant issue, always at the apartment complex is JD 445 with 60 inch blade (I keep a enclosed trailer in one stall for snow equipment and garden tractor), where truck can't get the tractor clears thr spot, if its a bigger storm I drop off skid steer plow and bucket before storm, the skid steer allows me to get into super tight corners while doing a sweep & turn where I can work around cars easily or I have the pick up truck that has the hinker c-plow where I can scrape down to bare cement in reverse. Lastly if its a super big storm I can use skid steer to move snow out of areas and have a second guy in my dump truck pushing snow with v-plow. So I really don't have much issues when it comes to my big apartment complex. All this is normally done by myself, its a 40 unit - 4 building complex and in all whenni have all the right equipment incsn clear 2,000 ft of sidewalk and all parking lots in 2 hrs by myself. Most of the speed comes into play cuz the management tells them each year that they have to work with my system and move their car as soon as I get there.
@@MrBigblueford we have 2 500 unit apt complexes. 3 plow trucks, 2 skid steers and a backhoe with a pusher on standby. During a snow storm, we clear the outer driveways, open the Courtyards as much as we can while staying a foot away from cars as per apt complexes insurance company policy. We clear the parking lots on outer permeter so residents can move cars. Maybe out of 500 units, 200 move their cars. Courtyards are tight even for skidsteer when it's empty. Half the time, residents don't adhere to the policy for moving their cars. Nowhere to put the snow, truck and skidsteer tagteaming courtyards doable if there aren't cars parked illegally in our stacking spots. Residents follow the skidsteer like moths to a flame, jump right in empty spaces usually taking up 2 spots, 3 feet from the curb. That's when we start calling the tow company.
Can all the equipment in the world , doesn't help when residents are braindead , refuse to move their cars. They clear their car off, trample down the snow and go back inside. Then they'll call the mgr we didnt clear the courtyards they can't get out blah blah.
@@harveylong5878 fyi yea you sn take on gigantic complexes when you have 20 employees on the payroll, what your not seeing is i built a gigantic one mN operation with a limited part time guy - mabye 5 hrs per week if that. My company operates on a level that if it were anyone else they would have minimum of 5 guys working for them - i do 99% of the work on all jobs - jobs that normally require 3 guys on a site - 10 acre properties I mow whole property by myself in 3 hrs time with a 10 ft mower, installing 20 yards mulch with cutting edges and installing chips by myself my company was built without the need for employees. With 500 unit complexes its mandatory to have employees and it is also mandatory to have payloader fornthr place you work for, with the company I own I do 90% of everything myself as I have just bought the equipment to nearly eliminate almost all needs of having employees. If I have one of my commercial properties where I need install 15 yard of chips during the summer i have a compact loader to scoop chips directly out of truck & transport to location where chips are being laid - rarely wheel barrel is used or needed, during winter large properties I can drop of a arsenal of various equipment at thr jobsites.
I work real hard to over bid apartments and go for the manufacturing and shipping docks... I don't like the hassel of cars here and there...
Stan, you have to adjust the rear plow just a touch. You'll get a much better scrape with the blades open. The sides at an angle open carve the ice much much better than the center. It cuts it. With the wings closed forward adjust the front of the wing to be one inch off the ground on each side that will allow you to be perfectly flat when opened up. The new install guy at snow power installed his first plow by himself on my truck and he taught me all that stuff. That was so cool of him. Unlike the new ram limited cummins I just bought the dealer had no knowledge about a diesel at all.
Yeah man seriously! It makes me Kringe to watch. That front plow is a wot. Waste of time. Adjust your rear and it will carve out the ice and break it off the pavement. The side wings are key for the scrape. Also if the wings are adjusted correctly, the rear center will even scrape better and will wear correctly. 45° angle is best. It cut my time down from 45 minutes on a lot to 7-15mins depending on weather its 6 inches or 12inches. Front plow is a joke. Only if its 2 feet or over do i ever have to break out the v plow to clear the initial path.
The wings kinda have a give point to where they just start to bend back with pressure and then before giving out, (which it never does only if I hit something will it). It will pull the chunk of ice off by springing forward just enough. Its minor but enough to get what you need done. Its kinda like a rubber band effect. Ah well I hope that helps you.

Just love the plowing videos. Wish I could scrape right down but gravel and dirt driveway with ruts in it so my snowblower has the shoes all the way down. I still hit a rut the right way and it stops my tractor. I just lift the blower a bit and go over it. Usually by this time of year it's smoothed out by the snow but with so little snow this year hasn't happened yet. Next summer going to use the bosses skid steer to level out the driveway. Hopefully I can get some gravel in. If I owned where I live I would do a concrete driveway and yes I would do it myself as I have worked concrete before in my younger days. Think it was the 3rd job I ever had out of highschool.
Hey Stan, had the same problem with boss plows. The power plug in those are junk. Replaced it with one of those heavy gray plastic plugs ( can get from auto parts store) never had another problem. Changed all our boss plugs to those.

Hey I was going to tell you on electrical connections. You might as well through the die electric grease away and go to the dollar store and get a big jar of petroleum jelly. It will not was off with water and it keeps corrosion down as well . I have been using it on light connection on my semi for years and it works great and a lot cheaper.
Petroleum jelly brings back memories of my grandpa he always had a tub in the garage for electrical jobs.

Stan, our company has a Snowdog plow and we have the same issue with the connectors. Lots of zip ties and dielectric grease. Cheap connectors.

Snowdogg has an add on backdrag blade. Added one to my dads straight blade. Makes a nice difference because it adds about an extra 80 lbs to the plow

@@harveylong5878 Meyer has always been at the bottom of the barrel as far snowplows. Years ago they were always breaking down we stood away from them. The bottom line is any plow on your truck is better than shovelling snow. If your gonna put down some serious cash You might as well go with the big boys that are proven like Boss /Western/ Fisher.You can get parts for all over the place.I know from 38 years of experience plowing snow in the north east.I used to install them too. As long as your happy thats what matters.

Cool hat, and it would be nice to see that cast many wheel loader do some snow work,maybe move some banks back with a blower on the front of it or that power room was pretty cool that might work well on those hard packed snow spots and thanks for another great video

Good old fashioned front plowing. That rear end lift though. You do a pro job and care about your work. Prolly why they keep you. ( it's nice you add in talking about the video while it plays)
Take a small piece of aluminum pop can and stick it around the male power connector...I had this issue on all of my snowdogg plows . Also a tonne of dielectric grease for every connection.

My old boss (before we started on our own!) I was using his plow truck and he had a snowdogg plow and I had the same issues, I would lose all power to the plow while driving and the plow would just drop and slam the pavement. That's why we bought a Fisher as our first front plow

Stan I have a snow dog. Same thing was going on. I actually lost a solder connection in the controller. When I moved the controller in the truck it would wiggle in the controller and I would lose power to the controller replaced the controller and all good. This was after 2 seasons with it
Yep- found out it was a bad controller and bad harness.
My western plow does the exact thing. I figured out it was getting the slightest bit of moisture in one of the plugs and it stops the whole thing from working.
We always run front blades in V and the back blade out at 45 degree angles grabbing what we scrap up
you run both as well. Cool!
Those clean outs around cars are where back blades shine... I have never seen a v-blade back drag as well as a rear blade
A quick fix in a pinch, use some dielectric grease in the connector. Fixed a lot of my issues through the winters.

Fisher snow plows are the best by far that I’ve used I highly suggest giving them a try

It’s the electric motor I had the same issue on a brand new plow. Open the motor and water actually sits in the enclosure with no drain freezing the leads with rust. Great plow bad design.

You should try a fisher v plow it’s what I run and love it least problems that I’ve noticed I wasn’t a fan of the boss plows but to each there own I just like the ease of the hook up and how it plows.

About that 1 car in the lot: it's easy to think they're just lazy, or being an ass, but you never know what's actually going on. They could live alone and be in the hospital, they could be out of town, there are plenty of valid reasons for them not to be able to move their car.
yep. I did a video last year in this exact lot and had one car left. She came out while I was plowing with her infant child. You won't hear me bad mouthing parked cars. Ive seen guys with broken legs trying to move cars. Its humbling.
Stan replace those connectors with 7PIN blade connectors instead. Them push connect they use on the plows are setup for failure.
They should use 2 solid pin Battery quick connect from your battery with 200A to the unit and a data set of 2 7PIN plugs and you should be rocking solid.
It is water/snow getting into the connector and when it freezes it coats those connectors which will cause a poor connection because as we all know water once it freezes expands.
found out it was an issue in the wiring harness and another issue in the controller.
My plow was doing thr same thing. I had to replace my plug from the battery to the plow. It was a snowex speedwing plow. I replaced the plow module, Solenoid, before i figured it was the plug. Now it works perfectly. My remote was flashing let me know there was a loss of power connection.

My snowdogg did the same thing replaced the conector and dialectic grease no problem now. The female connectors have cages in them. They break and will cause your problem. They are available from the dealer
Need to know how the truck and back plow are after that curb hit. It looked bad, something had to bend, the plow frame or the truck frame?

Seems like a loader with a sectional pusher would solve all the problems in that lot. Namely, the tight space and the hard packed snow.
Thats what I like about Sno Way plow they have 200 lbs of down pressure
That is why I will not do apartments. Going back and not getting paid for the return trips. I would demand they pay for salting because if you cant scrap it up it turns to ice. But I understand they are a loyal account and that gets me too.
