I was on a volunteer fire department when I was a teenager, the first fire I ever fought I rode to the fire on the tailboard. I am sure the bar across the back hand dents from where I was holding on so tight . . . Video brought back lots of memories of long coats and knee boots

Finally guys riding the back step! I've been trying to find something like this for a while, brings back a lot of memories... We'd ride 3 to 4 on the step depending on manning. Thanks

since the last time I can remember riding the rear plate was late 80"s to early 90's and the fact that they have bunker gear and hoods I am going to say early 90's

Correct! Early 90s. Who didn't love riding tailboard?

Awesome memories, back when every piece of Aparatus had a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel Engine. When I was a kid in the early 80s I remember them always tailboarding to a fire amd being able to hear the 2 stroke detroit over the federal Q.

Sounds almost like the truck has a manual transmission too. That's awesome. I joined in 99. We didn't tailboard but we still had detroit 2 strokes in the trucks and most had Manual Transmissions. Fun times and also beer at the station too 😀

This was a 1982 Sutphen with an automatic transmission. It was purchased by the Borough of West Chester that year. This one was fun to drive. It was zippy! The driver This night was Chas Linder. I believe it was his first time driving it. He was a little heavy on the air brakes.

Man... I miss the sound of real engines! Our pumpers were all manual shift transmission Mack’s and were awesome to drive. This brings back great memories! Thanks for posting this one!

Where was the original firehouse located? I’ve seen the new one built in the early 2000’s on union st. I’d love to drive through town and see what’s there now.

36 East Gay Street. Between Walnut and High Street.

Diamond Plate Surfing was the ONLY way to respond to structure fires in my day... enclosed cabs were for the weak 🤣

Classic tailboarding. You know it’s a drill because they are moving like a bunch of old ladies. LOL

Yes! 1983 Sutphen. It was a fast truck with a great sounding Jacob's Break system. Lots of fun to drive.
