    This is the BEST one man tent I have ever used! The Sierra Designs High Route 3000 is the lightweight backpacking tent that I have opted for to replace my Vango Banshee 300 Pro.
    In the mission to get my overall kit weight down this was a perfect choice for the Scottish weather as it is an outer pitch first, meaning that the inner will not get wet while setting-up and for the very few good weather days it can be pitched as an inner only.
    I believe I covered the pertinent points on the vlog but if you have any questions then let me know and I will do my best to answer them.
    Thank you for continuing to support my channel.

    I do like the look of it, the only thing I would be worried about is the wind. Good luck on the WHW the tent will be well tested by then you will need to give us an update at the end. PS that beard is coming on fantastic.

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a great tent and has been well tested now. For the wind I pitch it with the wedge facing into the direction so that takes most of the hit up and over. The wind did turn on Ben Lui bealach and hit the flat side but with the second guy line on it was fine, plus the guy lines are really tough.
      That's the WHW dome today and what an experience, absolutely brilliant and again it was more of Scotland in the bag.
      Thanks on the ol' 🧔🏼‍♂️ just letting it do its thing.

    Nice to see someone else with this tent other than the durstom xmid, I done 5 night whw back in may/June and the tent performed brilliant tbh, even the thin groundsheet didn't leak when camping in a waterlogged Glencoe campsite. You can flip the poles round and there's a small reinforced sleeve, makes the tent more secure than having the handles of your poles in the fly, which I found can slip when pitched on uneven ground. I've a few examples on my channel. I'm playing around with a few modifications to it, more so with the vestibule and making the zips waterproof. Cheers Scott.

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors

      Hey Scott, nice to hear from a fellow High-Router 👍🏼
      I used it on my WHW in August and it was brilliant throughout. I had the pleasure of using the bug net only for a few nights which was brilliant.
      I've saw people use the sleeve (the wee triangular corner piece) with the poles upturned. I might try that on my next outing and see how it goes but I'll check out your channel to see how you got on too.
      I'll keep an eye out to see how the differences you make to the vestibule.
      Overall, this has been my favourite tent in a long while.
      How did you find the WHW overall. Was it poor weather throught if it was water logged at Glencoe?

  • @norseman1137
    @norseman1137 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I own this tent ... One of the complaints people have is thin vestibule... A hack for this is piece of dynena with circle for walking pole ... Attached to bottom of fly. This means side walls have the option to angle out so you get another 6-8" vestibule to cook in etc

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen people use this method to extend the yellow tab that's there and side will allow this. So far I've fared well simply by extending my walking pole an inch or so and, like you say, angle the wall out. It does give you that little more floor space for admin.

    I picked this tent up at the end of last year looking for a UK supplier for the Durston X-Mid. I prefer the green for UK wild camping.
    If you are still looking for a lightweight backpack, I can *highly* recommend the Osprey Levity. I have the 60 litre version and it's ridiculously comfy. I've put hundreds of miles into mine. Obviously, it's not a bulk carrier, but if you're dropping the weight of the rest of your kit it easily copes. My usually carry weight is around 10kg.

      Hey Richard, how are you finding it? Have you had it out yet?
      I'm always looking for different gear, purely because it's there to be looked at, and I'll definitely check out the Levity. I have looked into Osprey gear before and know their stuff is good. My Vango that I use is 58L and done me well on the WHW so I'm sure 60L will fit everything and, as you say, dropping weight makes the pack size smaller.
      I hope you enjoy your SD High Route as much as I've enjoyed mine so far.

      Thanks for the reply. It was most kind of you. The reason I asked is that I bought one of the first models of the SD High Route 1 Fl a number of years ago.... It turned out that it was enormous, on both sides, however, it weighed in on my scales at 1460.grams! Including the stuff sack, pegs, fly and nest (ie the inner). Plus I always take a ground sheet so another 180 grams on top. It turns out that I have two person tents at that weight!. But I love the idea of the High Route and if it can fit a 70 litre pack in the gear store and keep it dry I may even buy one again. But if it can’t fit a backpack under cover in the a High Route 3000 such as yours, I have other tents to try. Thanks again for your time, regards from Peter.

      Hi Peter, apologies for the late reply. I have only just discovered the "filter comments that have new replies" button 🤦🏻‍♂️
      I'm not sure where you are at with your tent hunting now it's been so long but I can confirm that I stash my 55-60 litre ruck sack in the gear store (with the rain cover on and facing outwards if it's raining) and have had no issues at all. It rests nicely against the walking pole and fly. While not ideal to have anything pressing against the fly it does keep it that bit further out in poor weather and has always held up good so far.
      Again, sorry for the delay and I hope this helps with your hunt.
      Happy 2024 to yourself.

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi VVS, they're actually not that bad in the experiences I have had. I do tend to find the direction the wind is coming from and aim the foot corner (where the white stripe touches the corner) into the wind. Between that and the side guys on top of the walking poles, it does hold up well. I have experienced a little guy line slip when you have the combo of wind and rain but that has been less than I can care to consider.
      Overall, I would say that this is better suited to low level / sheltered spots rather than winter summits where a geodesic frame would suit better.
      I hope this helps a little.

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adrian, I found the blue white and yellow a bit of an odd pairing too, hence the green option.
      I've had it in fairly blowy conditions (15-20mph winds) with no real issues. On one trip a guy cord did slip the tensioner so a corner went flappy but it's easy enough to open an inner door, reach into the corner and pull it tight again. All without leaving the sleeping bag. It is however not a tent I'd take for extremely windy / harsh weather.
      I've seen people talk about adding this pole, changing that tensioner loop etc but, for me, I've been able to get a 60 litre rucksack in at the narrower "gear porch" side and have no issues storing a set of boots and the stuff you need to get hands to on the main side. To open the space I simply move the poles out at the bottom a few inches away from the inner and you'll get a decent enough increase in porch space. You'll not be sitting in it drinking tea but you'll get a few more pieces under cover.
      I hope this helps and let me know how you get on if you do buy one. For me, it has been a treat and brilliant on an August West Highland Way trip.

      Hey Danny, I absolutely love this tent and I've not found any glaring issues from using it. The only thing I have experienced is a single guy slip once during high winds and rain on the Merrick but it was a case of reaching out the inner and pulling the corner taught again.
      I carried it on the West Highland Way last year in my Vango 55 litre rucksack and it fitted no problem. A lot of the websites show it compared to a 1 litre Nalgene bottle and I'd say it's completely accurate and it can be squeezed down small.
      I'm hoping to be out in the next few weeks with it so I'll make sure it features again because I know people are interested.

      Cheers mate, yeah I'm like you, spread a bit of good will when you can. Got two real quick questions. How did you find the wind hitting the sides and more importantly could you cook in the gear side through the door. Just if the wind changes and comes straight in the full opening side.. Love the awning feature of it. My finger is hovering on the buy it now button. 😂. Oh and do you use a foot print with it?

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ugh! Always with the questions 🙄😂
      Joking!
      There's one of the corners has a red tag and the others are yellow, this is for ease of aligning the inner with the fly. I tend to place the red tag in the direction of the wind, making it almost like a plough against the wind and shedding it across a flat side (the main entrance) and the front, which is angled due to the asymmetrical design.
      It's not the most aerodynamic of shapes but in the winds I've had it in there's been no problem. I also carry four Delta pegs if there's any threat of higher winds and they really anchor it down.
      I've never tried cooking on the "gear store" side but I couldn't see why it would be a problem other than the half moon door on the inner just, although this is actually quite wide and you can get a 55L rucksack in and out of it. I've cooked in the entrance with no issues and with the zip being two way you can open the top.
      I'm going to have to get it out in higher winds when they're next here and do a wind test because people are always asking what it's like in the wind.
      As for the footprint, I've never used a footprint for any tent really but I do carry Tenacious Tape incase anything get pierced. I just figure if something is going to rip or be punctured... it's going to be ripped or punctured, not that I purposely look for spikey pitches 😂
      Again, I hope this helps and any more questions just let me know, I know the feeling of "should I, shouldn't I" well 👍🏼

      @@AScotsmanOutdoors awesome, thanks for the heads up. Prefer the colour of this to the xmid and probably works out a lot cheaper with import fees etc

      @@AScotsmanOutdoors just ordered one, managed to get it for £245 with a discount. Do you think it would fit a small dog as well as a person? Cheers

      Excellent stuff @@johnsonpt2 and a great price too.
      I have three Jack Russells and would happily fit one of them in the big net with me and all three if using the fly sheet alone. What type of small dog do you have?

      @@AScotsmanOutdoors I’ve got a patterdale terrier, so not much bigger than a jack Russell. Thanks for the info! Much appreciated.

    Hi,
    Just wondering if there’s room to cook in the vestibule if the weather is bad? Cheers

      Hi K! If you're whipping up eggs bendict then I'm not sure you'll have the space but ☝🏻 I manage to boil water over meths burners or gas stoves in the vestibule no problem.
      I simply extend the walking pole a little bit (a few centimetres) and angle it outwards at the base. This makes a wider ground area and I manage to happily lay there, tend to boil in the bag meals and make teas without much of a problem, and I'm not the smallest of people.
      I hope this helps but if not then just ask away and thanks for watching too 👍🏼

      I tried with my speedster on this trip, and while I managed to get the water boiling, the wind was causing me problems getting it lit. I do like the speedster stove for a wee overnight though.
      Do you find it troublesome in colder weather?

      I own this tent ... One of the complaints people have is thin vestibule... A hack for this is piece of dynena with circle for walking pole ... Attached to bottom of fly. This means side walls have the option to angle out so you get another 6-8" vestibule to cook in etc

      Hey John, I am hoping to be out in this one again soon and I've had a few queries about a few things so I'll show you what I do.
      I've heard a few methods about adding guys and extra pieces but I simply extend the walking pole and angle it out from the tub.
      The height drops a little but not enough that you notice it, plus you can simply pull it back in when you're finished cooking or doing whatever admin.
      I hope this helps meantime.
