Why (for me) the MLD Duomid is preferable to Durston X-Mid 1

- Why (for me) Durston X-Mid 1 tent is not as good as MLD Mountain Laurel Designs Duomid! Durston and MLD Duomid on paper are a very close match in size and weight. With inner the Duomid is only 15g heavier and 10" longer and taller. Does this make a diffeence. Wild camping on Dartmoor UK
NB! For the delicate out there, this is a fun light hearted comparison and viewpoint so please save your knickers from getting bundled up! It's a fun video! I'll see you in the comments all who pass by.....

Thanks for checking out the X-Mid and sharing your thoughts.
I didn't have time to watch the full video but jumped around and a saw a good potion. For the door, are you rolling it up along the zipper edge? If you roll it up along the zipper edge it should give a nice roll, whereas rolling from the corner gives a loose saggy bundle at either end. I agree it can be loose, but it should be possible to get a nice roll (I show this in my pitching video).
For the vestibules, yes you are correct items on the skinny end of the vestibule aren't protected when the door is open. I think of the 'main area' of the vestibule as the space on the other side, and then items could be tossed in the back vestibule if you have even more. The X-Mid has almost as much total amount of vestibule area but it's divided in two vestibules instead of one. One can be nice to have everything in one spot, while two gives you option to dump stuff you don't want around into the back vestibule (e.g wet gear) and the dual doors give cross ventilation.
Oh one quick correction is that the regular and Solid X-Mid tents are made in Vietnam (not China). Only the Pro series is made in China (because they are the only ones who can hot bond DCF).
Anyways, thanks for putting this together. It's a nice look at two nice tents. I've had 3 MLD DuoMids and they're wonderful tents.
I live in Vietnam that where i test all my Bikepacking gear tent sleep system etc Vietnam has been making top brands for years like northface and scuba pro etc etc the quality in the stitching is way better that china and quality control is much better and of course the cost lot cheaper to make things … that why many outdoor brands get there products made here for years. Even apple stuff is now made here …. If you ever need that tent tested in the jungles and mountain ranges of Vietnam let me know cheers
Hi Dan thank you for stopping by. Its a great little shelter and will definitely appeal to some and congratulations on getting it up and running!
Thank you for info on production.
The second porch is useful but there is space behind inner or groundsheet of duomid to put boots or pack which is about all I put in second porch
Everything else is in with me or front porch. And your porch with door open that tiny bit by pole vs loads in duomid or even a Scarp etc
It's nice and light but similar to duomid with inner.
Yep MLD for me , as you know I use the lanshan solid inner with the T zip and I have it fitting nicely now .
Think you must have swallowed a carry on film before doing this video lol
Carry on camping Tony ⛺️👍
Lol yeah I think something went off in my head 😅 I can't control it 😅
It's a fab shelter
Hopefully try to catch up for a camp one day
happily stick with my trailstar 👌 Covers everything I want from a tent.
If I only ever had only one shelter and no others it's the Trailstar. Absolutely agree with you .
Thank you for watching and commenting
Solomid XL and a bivy for me. No K9 companion so, it is quite spacious.
One day I might bite bullet on a cricket which is similar to solomid I think
Pooch is often outside and could squeeze under at a pinch lol
That long distance book writing American uses or used one I think
Brilliant Tony. Love your approach to the channel. Always entertaining and full of great advice and tips. So refreshing to not be so serious about this stuff. Keep up the good work. I’m on the fence with xmid and duomid. Xmid slightly edges it space wise for me but the duomid is a classic in uk conditions.
Thanks William 😄 absolutely agree it's all far to serious on here I'd rather have fun 😆
I am curious though how you think Durston has more space 🤔 do you mean due to two poles the head room is spread more as I can't see how otherwise. Watching the video back I'd not really properly studied the duomid inner which could have been pitched higher into apex to remove some of the sag and give more space in net. I suspect with Durston most will use as tent ie with inner but Chris Townsend often removes inners for space unless it's buggy they often not needed. See a few upcoming videos from this trip in my old cuben duomid no inner at -2c . Thank you for watching hopefully you made it to the end :)
@@TonyHobbs I think the two vestibules gives me an option to store all my gear in one and cook in the other. The shorter corner space is perfect for my back pack. Just felt more spacious when I had both doors open on the inner. I always ended up pressed against the pole when using an inner on the duomid, unless it was on flat ground but a totally different story when using it without an inner. Also it would be better in the duomid if I used the two pole apex approach but never did.
I think I got used to pole after using it for last ten years 😅 sometimes it's in way but not usually a problem. But I'm balletic 😆
It's good to see other side as it were ie different perspective. I like to put pack behind me as you'll see in another video in editor. Plus prefer my space in one place and lots of it plus ability to keep door open as much as possible including in rain. But some like to compartmentalise the kit 😉
I'll look to get the AFrame thing in spring I think it's worth a nose
@@TonyHobbs definitely. You’re have far more experience and expertise on the mids than me. I’m too lazy to persevere. 😂😂 Although I’ll probably get a Duomid again the future after I’ve slummed it with other brands on the block for now. 😉
Don't own an xmid but have a duomid and love it. I got the lanshan solid inner and the two pole set-up. As perfect as any tent can be in my book. It's as good as my Soulo in many ways. Putting weight aside, the Soulo is just amazing, but only use it in really bad weather. I have two amazing tents for any condition now.
That is probably a very good premium combo
Not using MLD, but liteway, but i also picked pyramid over tarptent and durston gear.
Very wise 👌 they are underrated by those who don't but should know 😉
That laugh is straight out of my nightmares.
Well we do try to appeal to all comers and a good nightmare can be fantastic imagine me running after you with my big pole out lol 😆 😄
Sounds like he's escaped from Broadmoor.
Dartmoor prison actually but shhh hopefully the white coats don't come looking for me 😉
@@stephenshortland8182Tony’s more Grendon than Broadmoor. Be careful.
Ffs 🤣 thanks Chris 😄 shhh 😉
I enjoy my MLD Cricket: the love child of the Trailstar and Solomid XL
I hear many good things of cricket I think I need to save up and get one lol
With you all the way regarding the Cricket. As a solo camper it's the only tarp I'll ever need. Quick, easy and lightweight. Generally I just use it with a bivi bag but if it's cool and breezy the Lanshan 1 inner fits snugly under it.
@@TonyHobbs Yes, I heard you can get 10% discount 😉(code sorrydan10)
ffs 🤣 🤣 I just spat my tea out 😆 🤣 that is possibly the best funniest comment I ever saw and I get funny comments here 😂 absolute classic
Ron I own 3 of your tents. And I blame Tony for everyone of them 😂😂
I plead guilty 😆 🤣 😂
Hope everyone has a great Sunday 👍
You too Matrix now back to the archives lol
MLD Duomid for me all day, every day
Good lad I'll put the order in for you and claim my fee if 90% lol 😆
Thanks for watching and posting a comment 😀
Ha! I haven't even started watching this video yet but the title did not come as a huge surprise Tony! Who would've guessed? What if it was called the MLDurston X-Mid? 🙂
Lol I'd choose the MLD Duomid over am MLDURSTON like I'd choose trailstar over Duomid 🤣
Ita the shelter not the name so much
Although two pyramids I'd probably choose the MLD one
In this case my audience chose Duomid as competition not me and the Duomid is a better living place imo hopefully you watch it fully to end to see why
Is that the gray green color that is available at the MLD site atm or the OD green? Thanks
Not sure tbh but all new ones are being shipped in new silpoly now not nylon. I think... so like olive green now possibly
@@TonyHobbs You got the silpoly version?
@karniskavva no nut waiting for Ron to send silpoly trailstar and cricket. My duomid will need replacing maybe later in year I'll bend Ron's ear lol
You probably know but this particular model is my friend's and luckily it was on hand. It used to be Paul Messners but he didn't get on with it lol no accounting taste 😆
Mine is the old original cuben version it's probably over ten years old now and showing its age.
@@TonyHobbs Im tempted picking up the silpoly version! Gonna think it over a couple of days. I have the Xmid 2p but when I got single it feels kinda empty lol =D
Cost difference is an important factor for many, what is the difference?
It's noted in video later on
Yes MLD is more expensive
Indeed if someone wants more budget option Durston is a good option I'd rather pay more yeah it's definitely more 😉 😆 for the space etc I prefer the layout
Someone else naturally might prefer the small potch set up of Durston
The Xmid works out around £370 with all taxes
Duo mid with MLD solo xl inner (both in sil nylon) roughly £500 with shipping n taxes
For a sil nylon duo mid + 3UF knock-off inner (solid or mesh) comes to £370 ish all in. I’ve used the 3UF inner and it works fine in duo mid.
Xmid 1p with solid inner plus shipping n customs taxes comes to Approx £380
So duo with knock-off inner Approx same overall price as Xmid
But duo with MLD inner is dearer👍🏼
$500 not pounds for duomid combo I think
Duomid alone is $295 (?) Dollars so on pounds about £225 (?) Plus postage and it usually arrives on door step ...
I think what you said about the new mld silnylon not sagging is just because of them being new and having a good DWR coating, once the dwr wears down a bit the fabric will wet out causing it to sag. Silnylon can absorb upto 100% of its weight it water. Silpoly absorbs none. Anyways you never swayed me I'm gonna get a silpoly xmid for now and pickup the cuben version as soon as its available again. Anyone wana buy a hilleberg unna and cuben trailstar?
Ah interesting thanks
I'll take the space though and put up with sagging. If this poly stuff getting used maybe others will use it in future. Its great you getting X-Mid enjoy your camping and getting out better than stuck indoors :) have fun 👍
Smashy I might be up for the Cuban TS
Find the funny comment here or other one about the discount code its so funny 😁 😂 I'll take 10% fee here 😉😘l😀
A silpoly duomid would be very interesting.
silnylon is far more durable than silpoly and 3-4 times more tear resistant. a mid is super easy to tension from the inside, but you need prolonged down pours for that amount of stretch. uv resistance is its only downfall, but we're talking years, so that doesn't really matter.
I’m having this exact dilemma now. I have both these tents but one has to go. I’ve had xmids before and know they’re great but always wanted to try a duomid. However the silpoly of the xmid is so good in UK conditions. Struggling to decide.
Did you come to a decision yet ?
It's interesting this new interest in poly I've used silnylon for years and it's been fine and easy to retention by just lengthening pole from inside often helps. I'm sure others will follow and will keep eye open.
@@TonyHobbsfollowing sillpoly / sillnylon comparison
Duo mid is WAY more expensive than the xmid. Also is the duo mid not supposed to be a 2 person tent ie duo? In which case should be compared to the xmid 2p? I am in the market for a trekking pole tent tge xmid imported is £328 which is expensive so god knows what the duomid would end up as. Any suggestions would be appreciated im 6'1" and 17.8st so a big lad. Cheers
Hi Allan
I often find that MLD stuff lands on my doorstep .... you might find the same thing 😉 ask Ron he might help 😉 well yes it is but measuring it is similar size to x1 and x2 is bigger than the duomid by some from memory. I asked my channel what they wanted me to compare it to 😆 they wanted duomid so that iswhat i did.
@TonyHobbs thanks for replying Tony. I doubt anyone will be sending me a free tent as i dont have a youtube channel or social media following but i would greatfully accept any free gesr and would happily do a review 🤣🤣🤣
Yes you do sound a big boy lol the Duomid XL might work. The Durston x2 might too. Whilst I knock the Durston it's more I prefer other things like MLD but for some people it will be good. I'm just not a huge fan of it. I think it's over hyped. I recently borrowed Chris Townsends Enan yes its not a pole tent but I personally thought its better than Durston. The Durston is 800g I believe. The Enan well this one is 1kg plus pegs. OK that's a bit more but not much and imo better porch and living area. I'll ask my friend if i can borrow his Durston again one day. The other option but I've not seen any personally is the tarptent pole tents. Or Scarp 1. I also borrowed Chris Townsends scarp 1 and have vids on that too. Again not pole tent and that is heavier but less than Akto and quite spacious for the big boys out there. 6'1" should be ok in an MLD though if want lighter. Maybe look at a self inflating mat like Thermarest prolite or prolite plus. Bit heavier but not much and lower profile to keep you lower to ground but warm too. So helps keep feet head away from sides a bit if taller than my short Tom Cruise height 😆
Good luck and try MLD lol people often get lucky with customs ...
I was referring to customs lol a little word in the ear 👂 might see a zero dropped from value 🤔 😅
Still want Duomid but wish MLD made a solid inner with a T-zip.
😎
I agree on the t zip but unfortunately none do it so much these days I guess one quick whack around the machine more cost effective than a t lol but yeah it would be good folks been calling for it since the oookworks days lol
Question... why do you want solid what weather are you using it in?
Solid inner would be so nice , specially in Scandinavia in the outer season
Yeah can see it's useful for snow but plenty use single skin in snow
The mesh I'd surprisingly cosy it does create a mini micro climate open the door and it's noticeable certainly in the smaller bug bivy lol
Chris Townsend never uses inner in his mids and he is often in snow :)
@tony asked me to quime in and give my opinion on inner tents for Scandinavian winters:
Long story short, you don't need one. Get a trapper hat, that's important to protect your face from the gelid air when you sleep. It somehow creates a 'micro-climate' around your face so breathing is easier. You may also wear a balaklava for the added protection/comfort.
I'm spending the winter in northern Norway. I've camped in the Duomid at -33°C without inner. As usual YMMV so try it for yourself and find what works for you. Hope this helps.
That doesn't look comfy at all to me. Give me a bog standard tent any day. I'd knock that pole over and end up in a heap! You're not selling it to me. 🤣🤣 Lassie doesn't look impressed.
Future sales depend on Lassies looks by law invoked by Jeanette lol love it 😀 that's why we mad to cater for the equivalent viewer 😆 I'll have to get the A Frame one day and flog that to you can't hack hobbs not influencing his viewers 😉 😜 see you in the next video 😉
@@TonyHobbs 🤣🤣
Team MLD for the win:)
Maybe its my influence 🤔 😆 🤣 or my subs or its just better but so far the comments are MLD lol come on Durston guys join in its not that bad a tent 😅
Just had my first pitch of my MLD Cricket. Heading out for a hike/camp next week. I filmed the cricket pitched up and gave a brief walk around.
and gave you a shoot out:)
@@JasonHikes1 oh great thank I'll pop over for a watch always great to see someone else with an MLD and look at how they pitched it 😀
A pretty fair comparison but even after watching this I still prefer the Durston but not the 1 person. Price is certainly a big deal for most people and I think you’d have a hard sell that the MLD is twice as good. Pegs with the Durston could be better as most people, including myself seem to replace them straight away. Not sure if that’s the case with yours.
@jeromesmith7609 it was my friends and yes he swapped pegs out. Absolutely thr price is good its effectively half the cost but yes to me the duomid is twice as valuable mainly due to twice the porch ie the porch ino is much much much more user friendly and use able 😀 I do agree its personal as all this is but all my porch in one big place everything easy to hand I'd worth a gold nugget 😀
I don't have to move in duomid to eat drink cook but in Durston I have to shift down a bit. Hardly an issue but just more comfortable to not have to shift and cooking in closed duomid more room by far
Frying in duomid easy if closed we do in mine later this trip make sure to watch once edited
Impossible in Durston or at least Frying less easy in Durston closed door plus if raining door needs closing even tiny shower rain gets in see my first video but duomid rain won't get to you. So actually yes I think duomid is worth the price for sheer liveability.
But I'm not knocking the Durston. For its price for many it's fine. I hope people use it properly.
Ok if you are an hobbit from a Carry On Camping film.
Exactly what we set out to achieve then 😆
@@TonyHobbsHobbs the hobbit ....no one of Nordic proportions can fit in these things..
@antduke2361 one can't be too tall for sure but 6 ft and a bit might just get away with it. There is a guy in Norway uses one not sure how tall he is. He regularly posts on MLD fb group.
@@TonyHobbs one of the few times being small length is good
@antduke2361 yes absolutely
Tom Cruise is my height so I'm in good company 😆 🤣
