"You're gonna eat lightnin' and you're gonna crap thunder!"
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Michael Dorn, best known for playing Worf in the Star Trek franchise.
Art Imitates Life Fact: Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write the screenplay after seeing the Chuck Wepner-Muhammad Ali fight on March 24, 1975, at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio, near Cleveland. The details of that fight is beyond the scope of this comment, but the Creed-Balboa fight parallels that fight in many ways.
Making Lemonade Fact: In the film, the poster above the ring before Rocky fights Apollo (Carl Weathers) shows Rocky wearing red shorts with a white stripe when he actually wears white shorts with a red stripe. This was an actual mistake made by the props department that they could not afford to rectify, so Sylvester Stallone came up with the idea for the scene where Rocky points out the mistake himself. The comment about Rocky's robe being too baggy came about the same way - the robe delivered to the set was far too baggy for Stallone, so rather than hope people wouldn't notice, the character himself simply points it out.
Guerrilla Filmmaking Fact: Most of the scenes of Rocky jogging through Philadelphia were shot with no permits, no equipment, and no extras. The shot where he runs past the moored boat for example, the crew were simply driving by the docks, and John G. Avildsen saw the boat, and thought it would make a good visual, so he had Sylvester Stallone simply get out of the van and run along the quays, while Avildsen himself filmed from the side door. A similar story concerns the famous shot of Rocky jogging through the food market. As he runs, the stall keepers and the people on the sidewalks can clearly be seen looking at him in bemusement. While this works in the context of the film to suggest they're looking at Rocky, in reality, they had no idea why this man was running up and down the road being filmed from a van. During this scene, the famous shot where the stall owner throws Rocky an orange was completely improvised by the stall owner, who had no idea that a movie was being filmed and that he would be in it.

WHAT??? Where was Dorn??? I have to go look that up RIGHT NOW.
Wow... I had to just look really hard at some still images to identify him. I think I need to both see his eyes AND his mouth without being covered by sunglasses or facial hair and both were the case in most of the scenes in this movie. Oof! I am usually good at recognizing actors like that!! Oh, but I love when I am totally surprised :)
I love how this movie was inspired by true events and also how they had several "make it work" moments. That includes the way they worked in the impromptu things like the orange.
I can't wait to see what the next movie in the series looks like! Perhaps more mature and organized? But will that actually take away some of the original charm? Hmmmmm...

THE STORY OF BUTKUS: Butkus was Stallone's actual pet. just before the Movie began, Stallone was so broke that he had to sell him so he could eat. With his first Paycheck from the Movie, he went to where he sold him and waited three days for the buyer to show up and bought him back at a HUGE mark-up.
The Lead Street Corner Singer was Frankie Stallone, Sylvester's brother. Frankie also wrote the Song they were Singing.

A great movie. A couple of bits of additional info for the viewer could have helped, especially explaining how the match works (for example, lots of people wouldn’t know that it goes to 15 rounds maximum, and how points are awarded). I’ve seen numerous people unsure of whether he won or lost, and that confusion gets in the way of them seeing that Rocky wasn’t focused on that.
One of the subtle things I really like in the dialogue was when Rocky comes back to the apartment on the eve of the fight and confides to Adrienne that he can’t win. Her response is “What are we going to do about it?” The ‘we’ rather than ‘you’ was a tiny but clear indication that she was totally in his corner for the fights ahead.
She never seemed to do much (noticeably) after this except for in the Rocky franchise, but she was in The Godfather movies first as Connie Corleone.

    • @okchristina
      @okchristina  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Oooohhh I love the "we" thing. I haven't seen the Godfather movies so I look forward to seeing her there!

Apollo Creed won the match, but Rocky won everything else. After the last bell he was still standing and nothing else mattered. He won the girl and the crowd. AND the Oscar! I got it, but most of the audience in the theater didn’t!!! They booed! I watched the movie several times and at the end there were less booing, as more people started getting it. Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!

    • @okchristina
      @okchristina  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

LOL I can totally see how they didn't get it. I didn't completely at first, but I know better to accept that I obviously don't understand something and then take what I see at face value. I admittedly would have gotten more out of the ending without that brief bit of confusion, but it is still all Oscar worthy regardless!

6:50 "So there's another poster with somebody else called Rocky?"
    Yep.
Rocky Marciano, a famous boxer in the 1940s and 1950s, heavyweight champion of the world for 4 of those years.
Though both men use the same nickname, Rocky, they don't really have the first name.
The real guy was born Rocco Marciano and the fictional guy was born Robert Balboa.
I'm pretty sure the Rocky in the movie didn't want to be known as Bob Balboa so he picked the nickname of his favorite fighter.

In boxing there are 3 judges that score round by round. If it comes to a decision, they tally up the scores. A split decision means that at least 1 judge scored the fight in Rocky’s favor. But the 3rd judge scored it for Creed.

This film touched America, people were in tears. All the other Rocky's in the franchise were more about the sport of boxing, this was about two people finding each other and the unbreakable spirt of true love. You should watch it again at your leisure and you'll understand ❤

I was 13 years old, me and my friends went to see it. We had a great time! "Yo Adrian!" Some of us went back to see it the next weekend. We all called 'beautiful girls' "Adrian" - much much later all of my cars were called Adrian :) Movie tickets at the time were $1.50 or so. So yeah, $40.00 was a decent amount of money. Many people don't notice or maybe just don't note that 'this neighborhood' we see isn't 'well off' so to speak and far from it. Most of us easily associated with Rocky because of that. Rocky is clearly paying to train with Mickey and there must at least be trust between Rocky and Mickey! It really hurts Rock when Mickey tells him: "It's a waste of life!" - it's also a 'disreputable profession' - one to be looked down upon, frowned upon. Rocky and 'everyone' of the time knows this, but Rocky seems to have little and no choice he had to make ends meet!

Hi Christina. The fight went the distance and 2 out of 3 judges thought Apollo Creed won. Hence, Rocky lost by a split decision. The current 3 "Creed" boxing movies are an extension of the "Rocky" films and have been VERY profitable at the box office (Apollo Creed's son). Merry Christmas !

There are judges at boxing matches, and they score each round. If the fight doesn't end in some sort of stoppage like a knockout, the fighter with the most points wins the fight. A split decision means the judges didn't all agree on who won. So the fighter with the majority of judges supporting him wins. Heavyweight championship fights used to be 15 rounds. And part of Stallone's inspiration for the Rocky character was Chuck Wepner, who knocked Muhammed Ali down in a fight.

32:00 - The poster screwup was a legitimate behind the scenes error. But the movie was so low budget for its time that they couldn’t afford a replacement, so it was made part of the narrative of bringing Rocky down mentally before the big fight. Same thing with his cornermen’s jackets. They were originally white with red writing but after being put through the wash, the colors bled Xp

37:30 "So they go 15 rounds and then it's a tie?"
    Yes to 15 rounds.
Championship fights back then were always 15 rounds, but now they're 12.
Non-championship fights are usually shorter with some being only 3 rounds.
    No to the tie.
There are 3 judges sitting on 3 different sides so they get three different angles of the fight.
Every time somebody lands a good punch, the judge scores it.
Every time somebody falls down, the judge scores that.
If somebody gets knocked out unconscious, the other guy wins by knockout.
If somebody gets knocked down and is conscious but cannot stand up within 10 seconds, the other guy wins by technical knockout.
At the end of a fight without a knockout, the judges add up their scores and declare a winner:
If all 3 judges pick 1 guy, he wins by unanimous decision.
If just 2 judges pick one guy and the other judge picks the other guy, the one picked by 2 judges wins by split decision.
If all 3 judges have it perfectly even, or if 1 judge has it even and the other 2 judges pick different winners (one picks Rocky, one picks Apollo), then it's a draw (tie).
In this fight, the judges were 2 for Apollo, 1 for Rocky so Apollo Creed won by split decision - it's kind of hard to hear with the music, cheering, and Rocky yelling for Adrian.
No, it's not like somebody decided it was 8-7 or anything like that.
    It MIGHT have been:
Judge A had it 15-0 Apollo.
Judge B had it 10-5 Apollo.
Judge C had it 8-7 Rocky.
More likely round 1 was fairly certainly a tie and a few other rounds, like round 15, looked a bit like a tie. So maybe it was more like this:
Judge A had it 11-8 Apollo.
Judge B had it 10-9 Apollo.
Judge C had it 10-9 Rocky.
    Or something like that.
And yes, boxing fans, I know how the 10-Point-Must system works but this post was long enough without trying to explain that, so I kept it simple.

    35:00 Rocky knocks Apollo down.
    "For real?"
    Yes.
"I barely even saw what happened."
A left hook. Rocky's dangerous southpaw weapon.
"Did he do that on purpose?"
Rocky did it on purpose, so yes.
Apollo did not fall down on purpose.
Falling down deducts a point making it harder to win the fight.
Also, they take pride in NOT falling down.
Apollo Creed had never been knocked down in his career (they said so right at the moment you were asking this question).

They just saw this guy running down the street following a truck with a camera on the back. 8:45 "So are they all boxers like Rocky? Or are there just a few that are really good?
Nobody in that building is really good.
If Rocky were really good, he'd be making more than $40 per fight.
Rocky Marciano (the wall poster guy) was really good - he earned 1.7 million in a 10 year career that ended 20 years before this movie takes place.
But to your point, most boxers are never good enough to get paid anything.
Amateurs fight for the sport without pay, professionals are the ones who get paid.
Probably most people in this gym are amateurs but maybe a few might be crappy professionals like Rocky.
To be clear, what Rocky was doing in that fight at the beginning was very unskilled boxing and some illegal stuff too.
    Same with the other guy.
So how can I say Rocky is a bad boxer given the rest of the events in this movie?
The one and only thing Rocky has that made this movie possible was definitely not skill.
It was the ability to suffer enough damage that most men would be dead or at least unconscious, but he took it and kept fighting.
The dude seems to ignore pain and absorb punishing damage like nobody ever has in the real sport.
Almost super-hero ability to get the crap beat out of him and still keep fighting.
If he had a second thing, it would be that he's very strong and can hit hard when he doesn't miss.
Weak skills means he misses a lot and gets hit a lot, but when he gets some punches in, they are brutal.

    • @okchristina
      @okchristina  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

It can be difficult to gauge the skill levels within a profession, including the amateurs. Like with symphony musicians, there are several tiers from volunteer community orchestra to top tier philharmonics where you can make some bigger bucks but the competitions is TOUGH. This definitely makes the whole system a bit clearer for me. Thanks!

    Great Reaction....
The "Rocky" Movies are movies about Relationships and Personal Growth, with a little Boxing thrown in......
The scene where Rocky points out the shorts are the wrong color, was added cause the printer messed up the poster/prop and they didn't have enough money left in the budget to correct it, Same thing with Rocky's robe being the wrong size..... So they wrote in dialogue to address it.....
The Creed Movies happen after the Rocky Movies, the Creed Character is Apollo's Son......
