Carl Weathers doesn’t just nail the role of Apollo Creed, he excels at showing different sides to his character. Creed goes from cocky, to determined, and then honor-bound at the end of the match. RIP Carl Weathers.

Aria! Tuck this away... Did you notice how, despite being the "bad guy," Apollo held up Rocky's arm and patted him on the head to congratulate him. Class act.

You should watch the reaction before taking the time to point things out to her. Aria literally brought up Apollo's sportsmanship AND the moment where he patted Stallone on the head. Yeah... She noticed. ;-)

"I just got one thing to say... to my wife at home: Yo, Adrian! I DID IT!"
Fun Fact: When Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) is training for the fight, he is sparring with a smaller quicker fighter. The sparring partner is played by real life Champion Roberto Durán.
Making Lemonade Fact: Originally, Adrian was supposed to be at the big fight. However, because Talia Shire was working on another movie at the time, the storyline was changed to having her stay home and watch the fight on television. The scenes of her watching the boxing match on television were shot, and then edited into the movie several months after filming once the fight scenes had finished.
Incredible Run Fact: Analysis by Philadelphia locals tracked the route Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) took through the city during his training run when all the children ended up running with him. If he took this actual route from his South Philly house to the top of the Art Museum steps he would've run approximately 30.2 miles in one day - 4 miles more than a marathon. Not impossible by any means, but Rocky isn't training or built for that kind of run.

I've never found out if Stallone put this into Rocky's character but the way he uses his face is very similar to old school bare knuckle boxing. They used to try and tilt their head so their opponent would hit the upper forehead which is rather blunt and hard compared to the rest of the face. Back then, it would cause more damage to the unprotected hands than the head. Fights would have to end because someone's hands broke. That changed when gloves were added. Hands were protected but the brute force still pushed forward into the opponent damaging the soft tissues inside the body. It would make sense that Rocky knew the old school bare knuckle boxing since he was just a street thug for a loan shark, did amateur fights at a local gym and Micky even said he wasted his potential.

  • @FrancisXLord
    @FrancisXLord 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

It demonstrates the power of great character building in writing that when Apollo hit Rocky you cringed, yet when Rocky hit Apollo your eyes were eagerly wide. That proves it's not an aversion to violence that makes you flinch, it matters whose violence is against whom. We weren't set up to care about Apollo (not in this film anyway), and through the narrative we have had such intimate observations of Rocky's struggles that we are so invested in his fate by the time of the fight.
This was the first Rocky film I ever saw, and it remains my favourite to this day. When I finally saw the first film, although I did like it, it felt as though the formula wasn't quite nailed until Rocky II. At the time Stallone wrote Rocky, he was a struggling actor trying to make an impact on the world. At the time he wrote Rocky II, he was struggling to find success post-Rocky and many considered him a 'one-time lucky bum.' So the story of Rocky parallels Stallone's own struggles in the acting business - and that's pretty constant through the whole series.

Rocky won the love of Adrian and the respect of his peers. Rocky gets a second shot at the World Title. With the support of Adrian after the birth of their son Rocky was now a true title threat. Apollo Creed comes out swinging. He wanted to destroy Rocky. Rocky fights harder than ever and he emerged victorious! This is a great movie. RIP Carl Weathers and Burt Young.

For many of us Carl Weathers was a big part of our lives, growing up with characters we loved... Apollo Creed in the Rocky saga, Al Dillon in Predator, Chubbs Peterson in Happy Gilmore, etc. I actually started tearing up reading and watching all the goodbyes from his former co-stars.
Before he went into acting full time, Carl had a short career in professional football, playing briefly for the Oakland Raiders and then the CFL for one year.
After starring in Predator and Rocky IV, Carl was cast in a few films (Action Jackson, Dangerous Passion, Hurricane Smith) that were an attempt to make him a leading actor/action star..but the films ended up not being very good so he never really broke through to that next level of success. But because he was smart and talented, he was still sought after for plenty of smaller film roles and television work.

  • @kissmy_butt1302

Rocky 2 really turns into a Greek mythology. Rocky is on the hero journey up and Apollo on the hero journey down. You understand both their motivations.
Fun fact: Stallone tore his peck muscle training for the movie and was having issue with full extension of his left after surgery. He wrote the eye and switch to right hand into the script.

In boxing, the worst thing you can do is box out of anger. Why? Because you’re gonna be so emotionally full of rage that you’re not gonna be able to think, leave openings and all of the strategy that you worked on and training for is going to go out the window because of being mad.
Boxing is like a chess game, you have to play your strengths against your opponent’s weaknesses and always keep a clear mind.

Another great reaction, Aria. These movies are fun to watch, and Rocky is a great character.
There is a lot of reality in seeing how Rocky reacts to having a lot of money and he becomes careless about it. This has happened to a lot of athletes.
Carl Weathers is great as Apollo Creed. It is very sad that he is gone now.
Aria, you look so cool in your leather jacket. You have excellent taste. There is no reason for you to feel embarrassed as to how much you loved Rocky's leather jacket in the first movie. It was very charming. All the best to you!

The way Rocky fights with taking hits and always coming forward toward the punches is meant to represent how he faces life always taking the hits but always getting back up and keeps moving forward.

I've never found out if Stallone made this part of Rocky's character but the way he uses his face is very similar to old school bare knuckle boxing. They used to tilt their head so the upper forehead portion would be hit by their opponents. It's the same spot used for head butts and it's rather blunt and dense compared to the rest of the face. Considering Rocky was a street thug and only did fights at the local gym he probably knew the old school way of boxing better.
It would also fed into why he takes the damage he does since old school bare knuckle boxers would only fight as long as their hands held together. They literally broke their hands and had to quit the fight. When the heavy padded gloves came in, they protected the hands but the force was still pushed into the opponent. Bare knuckle boxing was bloody but did little permanent damage whereas gloves were less bloody but did much more long term damage to the soft tissues inside the body.

Apollo Creed saying that line “I won but I didn’t beat him” is a great line because in this movie it played out in reverse because this time Apollo Creed definitely beat Rocky but he didn’t win. Everything was opposite last time Apollo wasn’t taking it seriously the fight was close and he won, this time he took it seriously and he was far ahead on points but his pride got the best of him and it caused him to lose. So many life lessons in the Rocky movies and hopefully you continue on with the series. Great reaction 👍🏾

27:11 when Rocky was training and Mickey had his arm tied it was to retrain him to be a right handed fighter.
In the boxer’s stance their dominant hand is the power punch, while the non dominant hand is used to jab. They stand angled with jab hand out front, the power hand back.
Being left handed, Rocky would be used to jabbing with his right hand while his left hand is back for power punching.
In the scene Rocky is being retrained to be right handed and forced to jab with his left which is not natural for him and his arm tied to make sure he has to use his left to jab.

Just to clarify, there was nothing fake or predetermined in the first fight. Fights are scored by individual rounds, and Creed should have won nearly every round except the first and last. If it were real life it wouldn’t even have been a split decision, unless one of the judges were as blind as Rockys right eye.

"Rocky, do you think you have brain damage?". Rocky replied, "I don't see any.". Great line!
And yes, Rocky did say he didn't want one in the first movie in reply to Apollo saying there wouldn't be any rematch.

    @lazyperfectionist1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

"I don't know how many _Rocky_ movies there are..."
Well, it depends. If you want to be _technical,_ there are six. Plus three movies in the _Creed_ franchise which continues this canon. But if you want to stick to the _good_ ones, there are four and I don't know why they made the _Creed_ franchise.
_Rocky IV_ is the one that has Rocky lay out the case for his son, nine years old at the time, about why he _doesn't_ want him to fight, professionally.
"You see, I fight so you don't _have_ to fight. I want you to use your head for something instead of a _punching_ bag like _I_ do."
In the _first_ movie in the canon, they revealed that Rocky dropped out of high school. In the second, they revealed that he actually dropped out his _freshman year._ His formal education stopped when he was about 15.
Now he fights extraordinarily _well._ He kicks some serious ass in the ring. And the world of boxing has been very _good_ to him. It provides him with the kind of salary that allows him to take good care of his family. But it has also taken things away from him that he's never going to get back; the kinds of things he would welcome back, even if it meant giving up boxing. That's a price he didn't see coming for _himself_ that he sees coming for his _son._ He wants his son to make it the right way and have the opportunities _he_ could've had if only he had understood the world in high school the way he has come to understand it _since._
I think this underlines a key _problem_ with this franchise; it glorifies boxing. In the world of boxing, two contenders get in the ring and spend several rounds trying to inflict _brain_ damage on each other, and the unfortunate drawback is that, over the years, both succeed.
The CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control estimates that about 5.3 million people in the US (2% of the population) are living with disability as a result of post-traumatic brain injury. But according to the National Institutes of Health, it's closer to _20%_ with professional boxers and about _40%_ when it comes to _retired_ boxers.
That's a world Rocky is trying to keep his son _away_ from.

Whether Apollo and Rocky become friends, you’ll have to find out when you screen “Rocky III” because, spoilers, but I can tell you about a general element you touched on in I and II: In III, Apollo is a much more well-rounded character, not just a two-dimensional villain, and comes face-to-face with his longtime brash demeanor, when he was champ, from the outside and doesn’t like what he sees---at all.

Turns out he was wrong and should have prepared a lot more.
"I don't know if the fight was fixed."
    It was not.
The only way to "fix" a fight is to have one or both fighters agree in advance to who will win and what round.
    They did not do that.
    It was a fair fight.
It was just really close - the bad fighter that can take a beating vs. the unprepared world champion.
Yeah, some angry fans accused them of that but we know there was no "fix".
"it should have been a tie."
    Based on what?
I've been watching boxing for 4 decades. I'm a big fan.
I know exactly how fights are scored.
In the first movie, they don't show us enough of the fight to say it should be a tie.
In fact, what do show us, if that was the whole 45 minute fight (it wasn't, but let's pretend), then Apollo Creed won easily.
    Here's my scoring:
Round 1 Rocky wins this round 10-9 but a judge might give him 10-8. Probably not but it could happen.
    Round 2 Rocky wins 10- 9.
Rounds 3-6 are not shown so it's impossible to score these 4 rounds.
    Round 7 Creed wins 10-9
    Round 8 Creed wins 10-9
Rounds 9-12 are not shown so it's impossibl eto score these 4 rounds.
    Round 13 Creed wins 10-9
Round 14 Creed wins 10-8 (bonus point for knocking Rocky down).
Round 15 Rocky wins 10-9. A very generous judge could give Rocky 10-8.
Based on that assessment, it's likely all the judges had 65 points for Rocky and they might have had 65, 66, or 67 for Creed.
I think it's likely that most judges would have had it 67-65 for Creed.
But that's only 7 rounds, and we didn't even see all 21 minutes of those 7 rounds - I'm only scoring what I actually saw.
Who knows what happened in the other 8 rounds we did not see, or in the missing minutes/seconds of the 7 rounds we partially saw.
My point is, if you ONLY score what we see, Apollo Creed should most likely win.
It is only a tie if all 3 judges call the 2 closest rounds in favor of Rocky (6 decisions and every one of them in Rocky's favor) - that's the only way to get a draw here.
Now, clearly one judge actually had Rocky winning, so some good stuff must have happened in the missing 8 rounds.
The other two judges had Creed winning.
That's why Creed won the very close fight.

You don’t need to justify the jacket talk. It’s a good look. And you look good in your jacket too.

It depends on what version you see, though. Some versions cut him out of the movie. I saw the film recently on Turner Classic Movies and it was "Spielberg's Director's Cut" and Carl was removed. :-/
