    "JUST a bit outside."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Neil Flynn.
What Script Fact: Harry Doyle's (Bob Uecker) famous "JUST a bit outside." was ad-libbed.
Historical Fact: Ken Keltner was the 3rd baseman on the 1941 Indians whose fielding heroics helped end Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak.
Location Location Fact: The home game scenes were filmed at Milwaukee's County Stadium, which has since been torn down, where Bob Uecker, who portrays announcer Harry Doyle, called games for the Brewers and played for the old Milwaukee Braves. The exterior stadium shots use Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, which has since been torn down.
Movie Magic Fact: Charlie Sheen was a high school pitcher who was offered a baseball scholarship to the University of Kansas. In the movie, he threw a 101 mph fastball, but in reality Sheen only could throw in the high 80s. Many tricks were used to make the actors seem like they were as good as their characters. For example, the pitching mound in a real baseball stadium is 60'6" away from the home plate, but to give the impression that Charlie Sheen's 85 mph fastball was traveling 100mph, they moved the mound up 10 feet and shot from behind the plate so the viewer wouldn't notice the distance difference. Also, all Wesley Snipes' running scenes are shown in slow motion to give the impression that he is running faster than he actually is.
Life Imitates Art Fact: Real-life relief pitcher Mitch Williams (with the Chicago Cubs at the time of the film's release) was inspired to model himself after the Rick Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) character. He began to wear the number 99 and had Wild Thing (1966) played when entering games, shortly earning the nickname "Wild Thing" himself. In addition, the modern day tradition of relief pitchers, mainly closers, having their own intro songs was largely inspired by this film. During the 2016 baseball season real-life Cleveland Indians players Jason Kipnis and Mike Napoli acquired two Jobu statues and set them up in a shrine in the team's locker room at Progressive Field. They initially placed an offering of vodka in it but then switched to rum, resulting in a 6-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in June. In July they even sacrificed a supermarket chicken to help end teammate Yan Gomes' slump.

I thought I recognized the announcer's voice! I have Brewer fans in the family so that must be why. There were always games on in the background.
That was very clever on how they made the actors seem like professional level players. I wish they could do better with actors trying to portray musicians!!! lol
      Love the life imitates details!

OK Yes the Cleveland Indians were especially bad in the 1980's the team had not won a world series since 1954, the reason you saw CACTUS in spring training scenes early in the film is because CLEVELAND is COLD in March so the team and Other teams gather in ARIZONA for pre season training some teams go to FLorida

The cactus you saw at the beginning was during Spring Training. The teams practice and get into shape in Feb and March before the season starts and most cities are too cold to do that at home so they go to either Florida or Arizona (cactus) for Spring Training.
When Hays went home to score the run, the catcher had to tag him with the ball (in his glove or bare hand) to get him out. Hays slid around the tag but touched home plate, so he scored. You only have to beat the throw to First Base (or on a force out), as the batter did after his bunt.
I hope you watch The Natural, my favorite baseball movie.

Ah yes, training in warmer climates makes sense. I'm still getting used to the rules and schedule of the game.
And I think I was so nervous in that final sliding scene that I didn't quite look closely enough to see if he actually touched the plate!!!

Yes, the record the Indians really had as of the filming of this movie is shown accurately in the film. They really did have a terrible reputation but got better in more recent years. Btw, the reason there are cactuses in the background when Rick rides up is the team is doing spring training in Tucson.

A funny baseball comedy 😅very funny. Great reaction. Yep baseball season is the longest in all sports each season is 162 games not counting spring training which is at least 15 to 20 games starts in February. Then if you make the playoffs that's another 10 plus games if you win lol. Seasons have started in March and ended in November depending on the year. Usually ends in October most of the time.. big Yankees fan here and I used to play.
Also I love your hair you hust need your little baseball hat, a glove and you're all set 😉 To answer your question the Indians or now "Guardians" they changed their name for PC reasons...anyway lol 😏 they've been a bad team at times and a good team though they rarely win in the playoffs especially if they play the Yankees 😅
Sorry forthe long post just wanted to answer all of your questions. You should watch a movie called The Fan with Wesley Snipes and Robert DeNiro, great thriller where baseball is a big part of it but also other crazy sub plots.

Oo thanks for the movie suggestion. And yes now the season length makes sense -- that's still a whole lotta games, but I think they love what they do! And I did end up borrowing a hat for a different baseball reaction! lol

I feel like Kurt Russell has also been in like 3 different baseball movies Bill Duram, Field of Dreams and For The Love of the Game lol. Oh yes it's a very long sports season! Yeah you have to love it for a season majority of the year haha.
I never played professionally but I did a little in high school, exhibition leagues than after that some mens and co-ed competitive fast pitch softball leagues. Similar rules with softball but a little different than baseball. And you're welcome! The Fan is a crazy movie when you do get to that you'll enjoy it I think!

Just saw a TH-cam video today about the 4k steelbook release of this film. Apparently, there was an alternate ending to this film where Lou goes to tell "the bitch" off in her office when she reveals there was never an offer to move to Miami, that the team was broke so she purposely sought out a team with potential that just needed the right motivation with Lou to succeed. She threatens to fire Lou if he tells the team just after he tries to quit. This is before the final game. They filmed her supporting the team, showed a preview the decided to take out this last minute curveball to the plot and her character and reshot her reactions for theatrical release. I think they made the right decision but seeing that cut scene is definitely recommended!
Link to a video of the alternate ending:

Hot Shots is a different kind of movie.
Comparing it to Major League is like comparing Star Wars to Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Yeah, they have the same actor but they're just not the same thing.
Hot Shots is insane, crazy, silliness from start to finish.
If that's what you're in the mood for, it's a great movie.
    I love Hot Shots.
Major League is none of that.
It's a story of character development, growth, camaraderie, and triumph that focuses on the humans, not on the slapstick comedy.
True, it has a lot of comedy, but that's mostly pranks and dialogue rather than slapstick and sight-gags.
A very different and far more intelligent feel.
If that's what you're in the mood for, it's a great movie.
    I love Major league.

One of my top 3 baseball movies. Watch it every year in the spring.
-writer of the movie was a Cleveland fan and because they were so bad for so long thought this was the only way he’d see them win
-Cleveland won the pennant in 1995, 6 years after this movie came out
-this was a major factor in closers (then everybody) coming out to music
-Charlie Sheen was recruited for baseball in hs and was pitching in the 80s in the film (which is pretty impressive for a non athlete)
-Vagasil Pitcher Harris was modeled after a Gaylord Perry a real hall of fame pitcher that admitted to regularly cheating during his career
-many pro ball players say this one of the most accurate baseball movies because of all the interpersonal club house stuff
-Miami got a team in 1993

Hitting a baseball is probably the hardest thing to do in sports. You have to hit a round ball with a round bat, also you have to determine speed, location and spin in a tenth of a second. Also, you have to not be scared of getting hit by a 95 mph plus fastball. That's why a great hitter fails 7 out of 10 times, that's a .300 batting average and can get you into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
