  • If you dreamed about owing a Tesla Model S but a new one was just a little bit out of reach price wise, than consider this gorgeous 2014 Model S 85. It’s a local clean Carfax vehicle in excellent shape inside and out. With seamless neck snapping power nearly instantly available with a stab of the accelerator and amazing handling due to the low center of gravity from the low slung batteries this Model S offers performance than will put many high performance cars to shame. It also offers amazing creature comforts. A huge tablet like interface streamlines pretty much all the vehicle controls to one location allowing the rest of the interior to have a streamlined uncluttered look and the ease of use of the display is very similar to an Apple device like and iPhone or iPad. Driving a Tesla is quite an experience, its unlike any other vehicle on the road, if you never drove one before you will be in for a big treat when you get behind the wheel of this gorgeous example.

I picked up a 2014 Tesla 85 RWD in 2021 with 54,003 miles with a clean carfax, the tech package, the auto suspension and a panoramic sunroof for $29,200. Had it shipped from near Chicago for $1,450 and after all the fees and California taxes the out the door grand total price was $32,250 and I love it. The new car retail price was over $92,000 so I only paid about a third of the new car price. Supposedly the battery should last between 300,000 and 500,000 miles so if I can get anywhere near 300,000 for around $32,000 I'll be thrilled and when the battery does die I'll just get new one for around $20,000 and it will be almost like having a new Tesla since all model S's from 2013 to 2022 look very similar inside and out.

what website did you search for the Tesla? I am thinking of doing the same. Thanks in advance

It won't be... the motor also fails and sets you 10k$ or so.
Then the inverter, on board charger, mcu, charging port, AC pump, suspension, ... also won't last you forever.

@@tiloalo I know it won't last forever. Gas cars don't last forever either, you do realize that right? Of corse there's going be things that need to get fixed along the way but I went from paying nearly $300 a month in gas to paying nothing to charge my Tesla with my solar. I also don't pay for oil changes or tune up's or spark plugs or any of the other BS gas cars need and when I need a new battery in another 200,000 miles or so I'll pay around $10K and essentially have a new Tesla. Plus my model S is the safest car ever tested. I'm not riding on top of a 15 gallon highly flammable gas tank and there's no engine that could crush me in a Tesla. People always seem to leave the safety aspect out when talking about how great gas cars are compared to EV's.

@xyzxyz6406 let's see in a few years, you might have changed your mind.
A Tesla Model S costs more to maintain as most repairs are very expensive. Tesla only replaces entire components instead of fixing them.

@@tiloalo Do you own a Tesla because what you're saying is what most people get off social media posts? I've had my Tesla for 3 years now and all I've had to replace is a window regulator, which by the way I also had to get fixed in my last gas car. I got over 40,000 miles out of my last set of tires and I save a ton of money compared to what my wife has to spend on her Camry hybrid. It's not even close. Just the convenience of never having to go to the gas station alone is enough for me to never drive a gas car again, but hey, to each his own. If you prefer to pay $4, $5 or $6 dollars a gallon for gas and continue using the same technology your grandpa used 100 years ago have at it bud but spouting a bunch of hypothetical BS that might happen in a few years can also be applied to any gas car out there.

Just a couple of points, it's not the screen or processor that fails but a small memory card that has finite read/write operational lifetime.
These are easily replaced and not expensive.
Here in Europe (Norway) most people pay a small extra premium to their insurance companies who will then cover most electrical drive systems such as motors & batteries against failures up to 200,000 kilometres.

I've been doing alot of research looking at older Model S's. At first the prices looked pretty good... the problem is there's no way to know how much longer that battery and drive unit will last.
I'll happily pay 10-13k for a 2015-2016 but most are asking 20k which is pointless as a complete battery or drive unit failure will push your total cost to 30- 35k easily... at that point you can get a newer one still under warranty.

It's a very bad advice... a battery dying It's 20k$, and no I'm not speaking about degradation, but about battery simply stopping to work due to electronic issues.
Same of you need to replace the motor, your out 10k$...
How has yours been holding up?

There is plenty of data out there showing a Tesla battery can last a very long time. Check out the Tesla high milieage club. There was a Model S recently sold in CA with 350k miles and battery was still at 92% and it sold for $19k. Like an engine if you dont take care of it, it will not last long. If someone used a Tesla for Uber and charged it to 100% daily, not 80% like Tesla recommends and you Supercharge it twice a day, yes you may toast the battery. Tesla charges $9,000 to put a refurbished battery in a Model 3 Standard Range. My dealership cost having service put a remanufactured engine in an INFINITI is about $12k. Some people want a luxury car but cant afford to spend $40-$50k on one, so for under $20k you are going to be looking at luxury sedans with over 100k miles. Not everyone wants a Camry or Corolla which will be far more reliable. How much to replace a twin turbo V8 on a BMW? How much to replace the Quattro All Wheel Drive System on an Audi because you or the preiovus owner never serviced the differentials? Whats the cost on replacement DPK transmission on your Porsche Panamera? All these ICE cars have thousands of moving parts that can fail, a Tesla Model S only has dozens. Data also is pointing to the Tesla Model S 85 as having one of the most reliable battery packs in older Teslas looking at data from high mileage Teslas.

Batteries of old Teslas are great. I know a guy with a 2013 Model S P85+. It has over 300k KM's and has almost never seen a garage for service or other things. He did a battery degradation test the other day. He had 8% degradation. And the costs you mention are coming aout of your ass. Bettery repair is nto 20k. A motor is not 10k.

    • @tiloalo

      A new battery + install is 20k$ for a model S.
Repair is cheaper but they only repair a module and it costs 6k$, if the next module dies 2 months later, you're out another 60k$.
Degradation is pointless to mention, none of them are replaced due to degradation but due to the BNS or one module failing.
And yes, a new motor + install is 10k$ on a model S.
Of course, not all batteries fail, but plenty enough do that it's scary to buy an out if warranty tesla.
