Stimming= "the repetitive performance of certain physical movements or vocalizations, as a form of behavior by persons with autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions; self-stimulation. This behavior is thought to serve a variety of functions, such as calming and expression of feelings."
You might know someone who stims and don't understand why, or maybe you stim but didn't know it was with the purpose of self regulating. Some stimming can be self-harming, and we should learn other safer behaviors we can do to replace those with. But a lot of stimming is harmless, helpful and fun. Others might not understand or think we are weird. It is always up to you to decide what kind of stimming you want to do or not do, and where. This is all about finding better quality of life.
If you have a family member who stims and seems distressed, instead of trying to restrain them, try showing them a movement that is similar but safer. If they need to spin take them to an open and safer area, if they need to hit, suggest hitting on your hands. If they need to bite, provide them a safe sensory or chew toy (like baby teething toys).
In my own experience, stimming can really help me to concentrate in class, concentrate while reading, or calm me down when I am really anxious or over stimulated. At other moments, the movements or sensations just feel good. I always stim when I'm going to eat something I really yummy and there is nothing wrong with that. And I love spinning!
