I wonder how much of the inner programming they had to rewrite for this game. I'd personally love to hear someone who worked on it to go into detail regarding all the platform quirks they had to fix or change to get it to work. That sort of stuff fascinates me as a hobbyist programmer. I should get this game and try it out for myself. Good video!
Thanks! I always wonder about that stuff too. There are a thousand issues and decisions in each little change made. Even things that didn't change probably took a heck of a lot of work just to make it happen on the 3DS.
My theory as to why it’s on the 3ds is because the game was always meant to be in “3D”. The GameCube was originally going to have a “3D” feature to allow some games to be in “3D”. But it was scrapped. The only game they had planned for it was Luigi’s mansion. Sue to it being scrapped, they probably remade it on 3ds to make it 3D like it was always meant to be.
@@momoman64 Yeah… that's why Nintendo scrapped it. 3D displays were not ubiquitous in 2001, they were incredibly expensive. That doesn't take away from the fact that they'd always *wanted* to make Luigi's Mansion a 3D experience. I don't know why Luigi's Mansion was brought to 3DS as late as it was, but it made perfect sense for them to bring it to the 3DS solely because it allowed them to finally give the original game that 3D experience.
@@odnorando8684except the lack of a 2nd screen that gives consoles a little more merit to exist Though to be fair that would make the switch more fragile and expensive
It's really not that complicated. The original game was planned to have stereoscopic 3D, but with 3D displays being incredibly expensive, Nintendo scrapped this idea. With 3D now being one of the 3DS's primary selling points and a baked in feature, they could now bring proper stereoscopic 3D to the original game as intended back in 2001.
A very well-made video, nice input. Luigi's Mansion is honestly a good game (and relatively cheap to buy in GameStop and some other places from around $15 and up), and it's delightful to see the Quality-of-life changes that were made for the 3DS version of the game. This game (and many others) really proves how powerful the 3DS/New 3DS line was, it was the Wii in the palm of your hand! (Though I'd say it's more of a GameCube 1.5 in the palm of your hand, but it depends on opinion.) It also proves that games on the go were actually viable, and not just separate from the home consoles. Hence why I say that the Golden year of mobile gaming was around 2011 (The launch of the iPhone 4S, where it had ports of games once considered “too intensive to run”). To 2017, Which was the year of the switch (which actually had hardware considered “obsolete,” but still powerful, and I felt the “formula” for the console in the palm of your hand was perfected at that point) Fun fact: Since the OG 3DS has 128 MB RAM, most games use a 64/64 MB split (half for the OS, half for the game), but in some special cases, games can use a 96/32 MB split (or 3/4 RAM for the game, 1/4 for the OS). This is because some games need as much power and performance as possible, like Sm4sh for 3DS. To make sure all RAM is reallocated properly, iirc the 3DS resets itself after exiting a game that has those circumstances. Running 3DS games that use the 96/32 MB split on an N3DS won't do the reset, as it has 256 MB of RAM (which means the N3DS has a 128/128 MB RAM allocation, meaning the 96 MB is already supplied to the game itself.)
The Hidden Mansion was in the original Luigi’s Mansion game on the GameCube or at least the Player’s Choice edition. I think losing coins when getting hurt was also a thing, but I haven’t played in a while so I’m less certain on that one.
