One thing I love about this scene is that the Imperials don't screw anything up. The captain makes the right calls, based on the information he has, his XO, when asked, as already anticipated the need for the boarding party and has them standing by. Everyone is doing their jobs well and that speaks to good leadership. They know what they're doing and they're good. So when Luthen out plays them, that makes it so much cooler.
Actually they did: they were tricked with that port side engine trust into increasing the power of the tractor beam, thus making the counterfeit measures effective with no time for them to react. Its so subtle its brilliant!
@@zichiro No. They were tricked but not in the way you stated. The port side thruster "malfunction" was to disguise the arming of the countermeasures as they produce a heat signature Luthen knew the Imperials could detect. The beginning of the Rebellion is the pivotal moment in Star Wars. Great job on this TV Show, Disney. Better than most of the movies. Did you really need to shoot 24 episodes total for these only 2 seasons? Could have been done in 12, I think.
2:40 Luthen asked the droid what the tractor force is, and when it responded he realizes that the tractor force is too weak for the countermeasures, so he powered the thrusters to try to bait the cruiser to up the tractor force. What a magnificent detail
I dont think that; the tractor force is to weak for the countermeasures? that have no sense, he asked the droid to know the force but when he realizes the tractor force was level 2 he thought of escaping using only the power of the engines because he did not want to go to combat, luthen always gives priority to discretion, if you pay attention the ship almost exceeded the tractor force but the imperial patrol ship is to heavy so he is stopped by her , Seeing that the engines could not overcome the driving force plus the mass of the ship, he went to plan b, because luthen always has a plan b
@@sergioveraruiz5384 I get how one my draw that conclusion, but there are elements of Luthen's decision-making process here that challenge your interpretation. First, when the tractor beam is engaged, he doesn't immediately punch it to get away while he's at his farthest distance. Instead, he does the decoy burn so he doesn't have to power down his engines (he justifies his noncompliance as being a one-man job trying to deal with a malfunction). That was necessary to buy him TIME to further arm the countermeasures. Second, he is aware of that Imperial ship's capabilities. We know this because his first two actions are to get a false id (because any Imperial patrol will check that) and identify the ship hailing him (Cantwell-class as noted by the droid). He knows that if he tries to run, the Cantwell has the capacity to increase the tractor force. Even the Imperial officers are baffled by what seems to be a stupid decision to try to run from them. That brings us to WHY the tractor force had to be increased: he's releasing tons of small objects to be pulled by the tractor. A weak enough tractor force won't pull them so hard as to destroy the emitter, just like a pebble lightly bouncing on the hood of a car is negligible. Take that same pebble and launch it at a ridiculous speed... now you're talking about damage. A higher tractor force ensures that. Third, I think the Plan A & B labelling here is off. His plan A was the Alderaan ID deceiving them into letting him get away without confrontation. Plan B was the violent approach with the countermeasures and shoot-out. A would have been preferable, because the Empire wouldn't then be on the alert for his ship having all the abilities it has. Plan B puts a red flag on that ship type, especially once the Empire eventually figures out the Alderaan ID was false.

This is masterful writing. The tension in this scene and the release of it at the very end is brilliant. This is what Disney can do when it hires competent people that actually care about and love Star wars. Best Star Wars show ever.
The Fondor is a droid! This amazes me, since I don't know SW's ships at all, except for Han's Falcon and Ties. This droid advises, calculates, plans. In the very first ISB meeting of the series, someone mentions a Fondor had been stolen, among other aircrafts mentioned by names. It would be interesting to watch the whole season by paying attention to the Fondor. I hope we get to learn it's backstory and how Luthen made it so smart.
Technically speaking, most of the Separatists’ navy were droids as well. That is, “sentient” ships programmed for space combat. Hyena Bombers, vulture droids, tri-fighters and separatist gunships.
Here's what I found out about the ships: The imperials sent out three regular TIEs and one TIE/sa bomber. The regular ties are cheaply manufactured and inferior in one-on-one dog fights due to their limited viewport. Meanwhile the TIE/sa bomber is capable of sending a homing missile at its target. Guess which one Luthan and Fondor took out first?
or the Batman. Expensive gear, lots of advance plans, ruthless, and - unlike Bond - often shows up disguised as someone harmless. Also unlike Bond: not a heavy drinker and doesn't chase every skirt reflexively.

Even though it was only a few minutes long, this has to be one of the best space battles I’ve ever seen! I especially love the flares that shoot out of Luthen’s ship in bursts and completely annihilates the sensor dish. Really cool Imperial cruiser design too! Amazing scene and incredible series. Second only to Mando for me!
Luthen set up the timing. He powered away from them so they had to to come around and then converge on his approaching position. This gave him the line up for the shot. Luck helped but that was all thinking multiple steps ahead of his enemy. And yes, cool AF.

I'm old enough to remember the original trilogy from its initial release, and this scene had me like "HOLY FUCK! DID YOU SEE THAT?" I felt like I was 7 years old again.
There are a ton of awesome things about this scene, but I think the most underrated one is how the ship's computer moves. It's probably one of the most convincing instances of a pointless "if a computer had a physical presence in the cockpit" thing that I've ever seen.
Very simple actually standard patrol which turned into finding a heavily armed ship unknown the crew but the admiral will have something to say about this
The more I watch this the more details in it I find to love. The first ship Luthen takes out is the TIE Bomber to eliminate the biggest threat in the air wing.
Luthen knows to get the most out of his countermeasures, the tractor force needs to be at 5. He then tricks them into full power up to 5. Great scene and a great series. I feel the Andor series the Rogue One are some of the best story telling we have had in years.
Foundation. This scene is inspired by one event on the Foundation novel (Foundation Saga of Asimov) when a member of the Foundation escapes from a warlord warship on a merchant ship equipped with better technology a nuclear powered engines. I love this Andor’s scene because it made justice to the surge of inspiration.
Excellent scene, innovative and suprising, love the sound of countermesures hitting the tractor beam array :) "Andor" is one of the best SW series, more adult, more sophisticated. Good job, I'm waiting for season 2 :)
This scene is like crack! Cant get enough! The acting, Stellan kills it as Luthen, the CG, the audio ( my god the f**king audio) headphones are an absolute must! Chefs kiss to it all, why isnt all new Star Wars like this instead of the w**k we have been subjected to
Gotta love how he goaded them into turning up the tractor beam's power so that the explosive flechettes could easily sail towards their target - they had to 'charge' but most likely had no form of propulsion to keep them a low profile on scanners - you would probably route ship's power into them discreetly, similar to how blaster power packs could be used as an explosive. And faking the engine burn allowed that power routing to go unnoticed. Someone might complain that the ship had no shields, but it's pretty well-known that you have to disable shields to pull someone in with the tractor beam in the first place.
Energy Shields won’t stop accelerating physical shards the size of a cannon ball anyway, and Matter Shields like the one on Scarif requires heavy infrastructure that you can’t put on a ship. So people can’t call shields here

@@electric_claire Actually, they did. Piracy zone.
@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 the Empire equivalent of a “drug free, anti-loitering zone”
Patient but ruthless. They were intimidading as always but very focused in doing so.
Incredibly tight writing and acting, top shelf. First he stalls by having them repeat them selves, just enough to have the transponder code ready. Then he gradually teases them to increase the strength of the tractor beam so that the counter measures he was planning to use all along get full effect.
My man took on tie fighters and a Imperial Cruiser with that tiny ship and won.
What an absolute LEGEND.
That tiny, but expensively and carefully modified ship. a Q-ship.
IMO only the external hull was still original haulcraft parts.
4:26 The 'look' that says; 'No matter how I explain this, Lord Vader will make me choke on my words - literally!'
this is way to low level to be vaders concern, this dudes just getting demoted to the star wars equivalent of freeway therapy.
That’s like if the Chief of Defense Staff personally executed a coast guard captain for letting a boat carrying drugs to get away
One of THE best Star Wars scenes in a long time.....a long time....- Obiwan Kenobi..
Hearing “Where’s my airwing” reminded me of the “Deploy the garrison” scene from the sequel.
Are we blind? Deploy the air wing!
From Rogue One, not the sequel.
The way he kept his composure the whole time. So badass
"Captain, Lord Vader demands an update on the pursuit!"
"WHAT?!"
"Just kidding, sir."
"Fuck you."
“No…from a haul craft???”
Incredulity never delivered more deftly than this! …plus buzzin the tower as simultaneous f u AND a defense maneuver so tie fighters can’t risk friendly fire
Chef’s kiss 👨🏻🍳😘👌
stellan skarsgård is an absolute boss in this scene. Going from a cool customer to a badass in the span of a few minutes. His physical acting is unreal, I especially like the part where he is unfazed by the tie fighter detonating over his ship - he's just in the zone.
This is my all time favorite Andor battle seen. I have watched a 1/2 dozen times...lol
'May the Force be with you"
*NICE!!!! That's what's up.*
This scene took my breath away. So badass!
The cockpit alone looks so cool and detailled like it was designed with all the other ships from the original trilogy. The monitors etc. So nice
The ship is also taken from the original concepting for the ISD, which is neat
This is masterful writing. The tension in this scene and the release of it at the very end is brilliant. This is what Disney can do when it hires competent people that actually care about and love Star wars. Best Star Wars show ever.
I don't think Gilroy is a fan, but he knows how to tell a story rather than spoon feed a tired message we don't want to hear.
"That has to be the worst pirate I've ever seen! 🤣"
...
"That has to be the best pirate I've ever seen!😱"
This is (in my opinion) one of the absolute best battle and escape scenes in all of Star Wars! Luthen is a true badass!
I'm glad somebody else caught this because I was thinking the same exact thing like that little AI did a lot of the work
the haulcraft itself looks to be of correlian construction, i’m interested to learn more about it.
Technically speaking, most of the Separatists’ navy were droids as well. That is, “sentient” ships programmed for space combat. Hyena Bombers, vulture droids, tri-fighters and separatist gunships.
@@Luke_SkywaIker thats kinda fucked up the more i think abt it lol
Here's what I found out about the ships: The imperials sent out three regular TIEs and one TIE/sa bomber. The regular ties are cheaply manufactured and inferior in one-on-one dog fights due to their limited viewport. Meanwhile the TIE/sa bomber is capable of sending a homing missile at its target. Guess which one Luthan and Fondor took out first?
The sound of those projectiles releasing, and then making contact with the beam is what keeps me coming back
Everything about this scene is the personification of peak Star Wars.
Start to finish, this is the best space encounter in SW cinematic lore
This man is the James Bond of Star Wars.
or the Batman. Expensive gear, lots of advance plans, ruthless, and - unlike Bond - often shows up disguised as someone harmless. Also unlike Bond: not a heavy drinker and doesn't chase every skirt reflexively.
quite literally one of my favorite scenes in all of star wars. There's so much "show, don't tell" going on and we're left to pick it up at our leisure.
Andor far exceeds Mando all ways
I love The Mandalorian but Andor is better imo. Probably the best star wars project ever
*Mandor
This reminded me of some BSG battles
God, why can't all the Disney+ Star Wars shows be this good!?
That rotating laser thingy is cool AF! Luckily his timing was perfect 😉
Luthen set up the timing. He powered away from them so they had to to come around and then converge on his approaching position. This gave him the line up for the shot. Luck helped but that was all thinking multiple steps ahead of his enemy. And yes, cool AF.
@@solazoth6661 Yeah, it's one of the few plausible cases where lightsabers make sense as a vehicle weapon.
@@rileymclaughlin4831 It's not a lightsaber, it's a beam laser, like the LAAT gunships use or the SPHA walkers in EPII. You can also see Venators using their ventral beam lasers in the EPIII opening

3:28 "Tractor beam is failing us."
"ARE WE BLIND? DEPLOY THE AIRWING!"
Whats genius about this scene is that he full throttled knowing the tractor beams wouldnt allow him to pull off so he full throttled to get them to turn up the intensity of the beam so that his counter measures would hit 100%. He was baiting them to go full power on the tractor beam.....like........Benjamin really directed this episode well and Gilroy really nailed the writing in ANDOR.....hands down UNMATCHED
Never get tired of watching this sequence....
It’s a great scene. One of the best scenes in all of the new Star Wars. The dude smacks up the bigger enemy ship, performs squad whipe, buzz’s the observation deck and leaves doing a burnout.
This is one of the greatest star wars scenes ever. It may be my favourite. It’s a masterpiece.
Exactly.
When I'm having a bad day I come here and rewatch this
This scene on TH-cam made me watch Andor and it was an awesome experience! Whatta show!
the bridge shots on the imperial cruiser are sooooooooo george lucas its nuts. they captured the feel of those original trilogy imeprials perfectly
The bar for production of Star Wars shows is nuts. Some serious love from the graphics team put into this.
I'm old enough to remember the original trilogy from its initial release, and this scene had me like "HOLY FUCK! DID YOU SEE THAT?"
I felt like I was 7 years old again.
One of the best scenes ever made within the Star Wars universe. I was on the edge of my seat. The tension was palpable
There are a ton of awesome things about this scene, but I think the most underrated one is how the ship's computer moves. It's probably one of the most convincing instances of a pointless "if a computer had a physical presence in the cockpit" thing that I've ever seen.
The whole encounter is just so clean and cool, tense yet smooth. I love this show
This encapsulates Luthens entire plan. Make the empire tighten their grip more and more until it punishes them.
This gets better every time I watch it. So awesome!!
The look of the Imperial captain at the end, shaking his head, like 'How am I going to explain this?' is priceless.
Very simple actually standard patrol which turned into finding a heavily armed ship unknown the crew but the admiral will have something to say about this
3:17 the astonished confusion of the Imperial Officer in this scene heightens the danger in the scene. Incredibly well written.
My favourite scene of Andor. My reaction was hysterical 😅 the face of the Imperial Patrol Captain after Luthen’s escape is priceless.
Everything is good in this scene the timing, the astonishing sound design, the music that make the suspens building up crescendo
The more I watch this the more details in it I find to love. The first ship Luthen takes out is the TIE Bomber to eliminate the biggest threat in the air wing.
The bomber would be no threat to him....its just the one that is easiest to hit first ..its not that deep
It's actually a TIE Boarding Craft, the same one that Captain Nieda used in ESB, it's a TIE Bomber used for troops and carries no ordnance.
Andor is the best thing which happened to Star Wars since the clones war series or rebels. Even Mandalorian pales compared to Andor.
I love the humming/whoosh sound of the tractor beam, very subtle but such a class Star Wars sound effect.
One of the best scenes in the Star Wars Saga
Luthen knows to get the most out of his countermeasures, the tractor force needs to be at 5. He then tricks them into full power up to 5. Great scene and a great series. I feel the Andor series the Rogue One are some of the best story telling we have had in years.
this is a fantastic scene from every angle. love it
Luthen is a triple OG
*Yes he is indeed.*
This is one of the best star wars moments ever
Excellent scene, innovative and suprising, love the sound of countermesures hitting the tractor beam array :) "Andor" is one of the best SW series, more adult, more sophisticated. Good job, I'm waiting for season 2 :)
This scene never gets old. Never.
Man, more thought went into this scene than the entire sequel trilogy. I'm going to have to get this series on Blu-ray.
This scene is like crack! Cant get enough! The acting, Stellan kills it as Luthen, the CG, the audio ( my god the f**king audio) headphones are an absolute must! Chefs kiss to it all, why isnt all new Star Wars like this instead of the w**k we have been subjected to
I love the 'what the hell just happened' thousand-yard-stare at the end. Brilliant wilting, acting, and directing.
i love that the Imperial ship lurches forward when he puts the boosters on, i like seeing accurate physics
The best part of the entire series, I think. Wonderful.
"Countermeasures armed" - sends chills down my spine
One of the best action scenes in Star Wars
That is a glorious scene. Star Wars at It's authentic best.
This show gets it right where a lot of others haven’t, unfortunately
That fuck-you flyby was straight out of Top Gun.
The British actor playing the Imperial captain went to Sandhurst in real life. So, he has The Empire Stuff down cold... :)
Absolutely loving this show and this character specifically
I love this scene!! 💪🏼🦾 The rocket darts were sick, and then the laser barrel roll !!!
Only Stellan Skaarsgard could have played Luthen. Such a compelling performance all the way through.
this is so well directed, the tension and pay-off of this scene is just perfect
He made them jack up the tractor beam in order to capture the counter measure.
damn that makes sense. The shrapnel was even more effective
I think this video just convinced me I need to buy the series in Blu-ray to see that radar dish disintegration in full bit glory
Captain: enough practice for today
Everything about this scene is gold.
It’s now my favourite Star Wars space battle scene by a long way
Andor is the best thing In Star Wars Since Empire Strikes Back. The dialogue and in depth characters are genius.
Лучший эпизод на мой взгляд не только в серии, но и в сериале.
This scene is great for one reason. Because. Sometimes. "We're all fine here. How are you?' Won't cut it it, and you got it where it counts!
