I was fortunate enough to attend the 2017 F1 race weekend at COTA and they were running a round of the FIA Masters Historic Championship as a support race so I got to see/hear/feel some of the legendary cars from F1 going all out on the track. Obviously the new turbo hybrid cars are miles ahead of the old cars in terms of performance but the contrast between the historic cars and the new hybrid cars when it comes to sound and feel is simply amazing. As a spectator, the old cars are just so primal...they are fantastic to watch in person. Video doesn't even begin to convey the total sensory assault the old cars hit you with when your trackside.
The old cars aren't as bad as one may think. The main factor holding them back was the tyres, as they had grooves in them to slow speeds down. At the Red Bull Ring, Ralf Schumacher set a time in the Williams FW25 on slick tyres which would have been fast enough for 17th. Remember, this is from a driver who hasn't driver professionally in almost 10 years and was running a detuned engine. The main reason why the old cars were so fast was because of their low weight and the engine regulations which meant engine wear was a much smaller factor, as they only needed to last a couple of weekends. I think it would be interesting to see how fast you coud make a car with todays technology and not having to worry about things like weight regulations, engine wear or tyres. I reckon you would be at least 5 seconds a lap faster than a W11 or SF-71 H.
I grew up in the V8 era, but I remember a bit of the V10s mainly because of Schumacher. It's depressing to think that we'll never listen to those sounds again, and I wouldn't be surprised if things get even worse and F1 goes electric in the next decade

You just downplayed all modern drivers skills just because the older cars seem harder to drive, while the new cars are going a shit ton faster, which means more room for error rises, and the new cars aren't easier to control than the old ones in any way, they have less downforce, heavier and no driver assists at all, which used to be allowed on the older cars, although manuals are a different story, but the tire were no where advanced as today, you swap the old cars with newer compounds, they are almost the same in terms of difficulty in driving.

Flies are awesome
So funny hihihihihi crazy funny
You never did this, but you tried to be funny and hate the new Sounds..
Read to 1k mate! Good job!!!
Thanks bro
Dude, the v6 hybrids since 2018 don't even sound bad at all
The Honda is amazing
Having a brain in this comment section is not allowed, sorry
Thank you for saving us the displeasure of 2014-2017
Am I the only one that actually like the new V6 sound? I mean, I get that it’s not as loud anymore, but it’s still bloody loud. Also, the onboards don’t really show how loud these things are. They soud a bit louder than you average road car, while in reality they are still very loud
You are right bro👌
I actually do, Alpine is my fav, there's something about it that just makes it so satisfying with every upshift, so smooth
Though loud doesn't mean it's beautiful my friend, would you rather have a 458 with oem exhaust or a new ford gt with a straight pipe?
Yes you're the only one who likes it
i did a comment on this video.. this one: a lot of opinions I'm reading here.. how many of this opinion come from who heared the sound in real life not only throught the tv ?
cause every f1 car i see at the track (in real) always, ALWAYS sounds like (you fuckin feel the power)... and another think I hate about that topic is... the "real" sound of f1 it's V10 or V12.. ok.. how many years the cars sounded like this ??? like 15 ? how old the f1 is ? for me it's just stupid discussion made by who don't know what's racing(not playing at simulator, real reacing i mean)
i'm with you. I don't do exactly what is my favourites sounds... but when you see the car in real sound always good... just pure power.. you can feel power horse .. and i really don't understand people.. but i think it's a human problem... when I was little everybody say Schumacher win just for the car... it's all annoing... (the boomer in 2000) now, the boomer of 2020 say hamilton win just for the car not like Schumacher... human... what a strange race we are....
same for the sounds... same for the track (about track i'm not a Tilke fun, but I have arguments to discuss I don't close my mind at all....) same for everythings...
PEACE BROOO
Maybe it's a dumb qestion, but why would you go from a V10 to a V6? Isn't the V10 more powerful and faster?
1995 v12
2002 v10
2008 v8
2018 v6 turbo
2021 engine 1.4L
2030 engine 1.0L 3 cylinders
Clarification...
1995: v12 6.5l. Yet 750hp, 200l for 60miles and 500 miles of life.
2030: 1.0l 3 cylinders. Yet 1500hp, 2l for 60miles and 15 000 miles of life.
1984 1.5 litre 4 cylinder
1:10 Yooo he upshifted with left hand!
I'm guessing each side has upshift and downshift paddle just like nowadays
its so cool to see how the cars went from 1950 to now
V10 it’s epic , not only the sound but just remembering the race dynamics , they were real lions the pilots , aggressive. Left seeing F1 many years ago while it was my top pick along BTCC and DTM .
2002 V10 is the best engine sound. Because of very laud!
When watching racing, the only time I like in car Camaras ,is racing time. tks for the natural sound too!
0:32 this the ultimate F1 engine sound
You should all start to at least act like real men and to try not to cry that much. 2014 sound wasn't so good, it's my opinion too, but they really improved it. The Racing Point - Mercedes engine or the Red Bull - Honda engines are making my favorite sounds in the history of F1.
So please. I mean if it sound like formula E I would cry with you but this isn't dramatic.
are you joking? how tf do you think a v6 sounds better than a v10 or a v8?
@@seth.b where is the part when I wrote that? Everybody has to make their own opinion. I just want to say that V6 doesn't sound so bad like every loser say. If you really wanna hear a terrible engine you should watch FE. But the V6 engines of F1 are absolutly legitimate
EarlCursed they don’t have engines, they have batteries. And you saying that they are making your favorite sound in f1 history, implies that you think they sound better than v10s and v8s.
@@seth.b yeah, that's why it's a shitty sound im FE. And yeah, just like I said, everyone have to make own opinions
EarlCursed finally someone who thinks-
and FINALLY not a donkey who thinks that only V10 and V8s were better than the actual engines
Whoever that was around the 0:50 mark was FLYING !!!
La f1 jamás va ha ser lo mismo que en los buenos tiempos 80-90
1:09
Yes! My era of F1 when I started watching it and my favorite era
3:18 you can stop watching
The blown diffuser is the cherry on the cake
Absolutely nothing beats pre 2014 sounding cars. V10 sounds the best. RIP F1.
Cant wait till they go full EV in the F1. I bet it's gonna sound spectacular.
V12s are still my favorites but ... the 2021 concept !? absurd, even the V10 is not bad
the v12 does not sound as good as the v10 or v8. It sounds like a higher-revving v6. Its not a pleasant sound
Seth Biniamini There's something called an opinion mate you don't decide what sounds better, just sayin
I got used to the v6,i don't really care about sound.
I grew up mainly on the V10's, I still instinctively know the gear changes from watching that much F1.
From the outside 1994/95 Ferrari's sound even better, should have added a clip from a spectator's POV.
BAR-Honda v10 2004 footage also haha.
Can we not just appreciate every F1 car and era sounds amazing.
Yes 👍👍
The 2021 V6 Biturbo sounds really good
Matías León the decelerations with the rumble from the exhaust were pretty damn good
Low quality bait
