      Hope it will help Emily. I'm not hatching again until the late winter/early spring. I'm looking forward to more turklets and ducklings :-)

      Hi Charles, thank you for your kind words, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video and thanks for subscribing. I've just checked out your channel, what a great giveaway, I've never even heard of those fig varieties before! Also I need to say that I'm more than a little envious of your weather as we have a four inch layer of snow covering our little homestead today.

    Thank you for teaching me the proper way to store eggs. I don't wash mine until im ready to use them. Our stores keep eggs in a cooler. We do have wipes here that allows us to wash them and then use the wipe and it seals them but we don't waste the money on the wipes. I put mine in an old egg carton from when I bought store eggs and wrote eat this end first and as we use the first row and just move the next row forward. I used to keep them in a basket but the kids kept putting the new eggs on top of the old eggs and it was a big issue.

      Hi Robin, you can buy some fabulous spiral egg holders, you put the eggs in at the top and take them from the bottom so you can be sure that the ones you are using are the older eggs... I'm naughty because I like to use today's eggs first!

    Love your information. Xtra Toilet rolls would be handy for seedling starters.

    Thank You so much for doing this video and yes they were for eating. Maybe dumb questions but do your have to have a male duck or rooster to incubate eggs and how old are the eggs when you incubate them? ( just collected)

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello dragonflyneb (I'm sure that's not really your name!), to incubate eggs, yes, your girls need to have been with a male for a period of time (I'd say at least a month, although longer in the winter as they are less 'active' in winter), otherwise all you get is eggs slowly going off in your incubator with the high risk of them exploding! I try to ensure all incubated eggs are as fresh as possible, I know you can use them up to two weeks old, but the more recently laid ones are likely to be better.

    Have you thought about keeping Quail?
    Are they viable in the UK?

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tony, yes they are viable here and I know a few people who keep them. We haven't got them because we like quite large birds and I think even large quail are still pretty small 😊

      @@LizZorab I watch a chanel called self sufficient me, and he normally does one each - he says one is enough for him.
      I was just thinking they are very quick from egg to plate.

    How long can you store eggs before incubating?

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fresher they are the better. I usually put a 14 day limit on our eggs, but there is no reason not to try with slightly older eggs - the success rate might be a little lower as they get older.

    Lets say it take a week to collect the eggs. How do you keep them?
    On the counter ? I was told in a cold spot and that they are god for 2 weeks. Before incubation

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Natalie, I store them on the work surface in an egg box, each egg at a slight angle (so not completely upright), then morning and night I tip them at the opposite angle - not upside down but leaning to the left or to the right. This should stop the egg sticking to the inside of the shell while you are waiting to have enough eggs. If you can, place a few sheets of paper over the eggs to prevent bright sunlight getting to them. I use eggs up to around 2 weeks old in the incubator but the fresher the better! I hope this makes sense and that it helps.
